One of the best locations in Arcata. Friendly and professional staff, beautiful interiors, and a litany of events hosted inside the parlor area. The hot-tubs are fenced in for privacy, but are not roofed; this allows for an incredible atmosphere during the frequent Humboldt drizzles. Saunas are similarly private, and with the option to use eucalyptus oil on the heated rocks instead of water, and you can open the doors to shunt the steam out in the event you have misjudged your tolerances. Cafe Mokka is the weirdest, most interesting coffee shop I have ever been to. That say's a lot because I have been to MANY coffee shops throughout this country. Why is Cafe Mokka so weird you ask? Among other things, tt doubles as a Finnish hot tub and spa retreat. Let me start from the beginning: The coffee shop looks like a cottage out of a fairytale, maybe Snow White. The front door is a huge wooden door with a large wooden handle. As you open it, you're kind of filled with suspense and not sure what expect. And then, you step inside, and you're in this adorable cottage with wooden fixtures. To top it off, there's a cat that just roams around among the guests. My friend and I ordered our coffee and since it was a bit cramped and crowded inside, we decided to check out what was outside the back door. In the back, there is this beautiful zen-like garden with a pond and everything. And that's when we saw the hot tubs! There were five or six little houses with hot tubs. We came back in and heard one of the baristas on the phone talking to someone who was trying to reserve a tub. We waited a little longer for our drinks and were on our way. I had ordered a mokka, and my friend ordered an americano. Both of them were decent. I'd come back here for the wierdness, not the coffee. read more

Very cool n funky super local place. Been around since the 80s and it kind of shows, in the best way. You can book a hot tub about one day in advance through their phone line, and we were able to get a mid-afternoon rez for a sunday when we called on a nice Sat night. I think it is pretty busy in the evening, but a 30 min session was just what the Dr ordered after a couple days of camping. Water is HOT, slightly chlorinated (due to the wooden tubs) and very cool to be outside. Nice outdoor rinsing shower, and ample changing rooms for 2 folks or a small family. Staff was brisk and friendly - cool experience! Will try the sauna next time, esp if the weather is chilly! read more

Cafe Mokka is near HSU. It's a nice little place to see a show and get some coffee/tea/beer. The people were always friendly & it's so cozy & happy in there. A while ago they were one of only two businesses able to accept cash money for their services at Burning Man (where everything else, I understand, is barter). Magical. On the outside you would never expect to find what is on the inside, do not be fooled, but I think it kind of adds to the charm. You walk into a cafe where their prices are low and the coffee is good, then you can walk outside to a beautiful pond/ garden sanctuary. But, I think the best part of this place is their hot tubs. We made a reservation for four for one hour and it was so amazing. Each hot tub has its own outdoor room with trees shadowing above you with a changing room attached. There is a light system that tracks your time for you so you don't have to bring a watch or risk getting your phone wet. Advice: Bring your own towel and make a reservation. Private redwood hot tubs and saunas booked by the half/hour!? Amazing!! Nice place to relax. Roughly ten bucks a head per 30 minutes. Call a day ahead, appointments book up. The towels aren't great, you may want to think ahead and bring your own. The apple juice is great. No glass allowed. Cash. The cafe portion of the business can fill up during the cold months (there aren't a lot of places to go out, so people sit a long time). Sometimes it gets a bit sweaty with all those bodies packed in, you may not want to stand around wating for your appointment if you're too early. read more

Of all the unique little businesses in Humboldt County, this is, by far, my favorite. Coffee and Hot Tubs - who could ask for more? How about a gorgeous courtyard garden with a huge pond, arched bridges, willow trees and an 8 foot fence all the way around to ensure complete immersion in this tiny wonderland. How about that the building that looks like the cabins of olden days in Switzerland all the way down to the wooden latch door handles, or that there's always a fire roaring in the main room at night and during the winter months? This gorgeous semi-themed atmosphere is worth the visit on it's own. It's just so beautiful, peaceful, and cozy. Hot tubs and saunas are charged by person / .5 hours. Expect to pay about $15 if you're getting tub and drinks. The hot tubs are cleaned between each use, and completely drained and scrubbed every day - I flat out asked the manager, because I'd heard rumors that the tubs were dirty. Considering that the water was clear enough for me to see the bottom when the bubbles aren't on, I'm inclined to believe the staff. Clean Tubs: CHECK. Swimming clothes are optional. By this, I mean nudity is allowed. Each hot tub has it's own enclosure and dressing room, to ensure complete privacy. They're open to the sky though, so you can star gaze at night. Each hot tub can accommodate six people, max. Romantic Location Potential: A+ (Just don't try going nude on a first-date ... no, seriously, don't.) Cons: * No Wifi - but Arcata is such a small community, I'm sure if enough people asked politely, they might change that. They might also be abstaining to promote a specific ambiance, kind of like how most rooms at the historic Benbow Inn don't come with televisions. * Cat allowed on tables. He's adorbs, but those cute, bean-padded feet have been in a litter box, in the dirt outside, and licked with the same tongue that licks his butt. I'm sure I'm not the only one allergic, either. * Drinks cannot be brought into hot tub enclosures. Bummer... I know it would be a major hassle if someone spilled or broke a glass, especially if a shard made it to the bottom of the tub and someone cut their foot, but I still really, really wanna sip something wonderful while soaking and watching stars. read more

After backpacking in the Redwoods, we were in search of some coffee and wifi to reconnect into the world. Then we found this place and I completely forgot about wifi and coffee and immediately inquired about a hot tub. They have private hot tubs available for rent!!! Done and done, $9/half hour. We walked across the quaint pond with little frogs jumping around and entered a rustic oasis. Clean tubs, everything is made out of wood and ours had a tree growing in the middle, plants galore. Turns out this is a Finnish bathhouse, well they know what is up! If I live anywhere near here, I will be back in the future! read more

This place has awesome finnish spas! You get a personal dressing room and private outdoor hot tub where you can smoke and enjoy your drinks under the sun/stars. Even though I can smell a hint of chlorine, they must not use very much because I have never had a problem and I have extremely sensitive skin that is easily irritated by the substance. The only drawback is the dressing room floors are wet from people coming out of the tubs, so I highly recommend you bring some sort of rubber slippers to stand in while changing so that your feet never touch the floor. The prices are very affordable and the drinks are good. Highly recommend! read more

This is such a cute cafe, with excellent coffee. There are hot tubs in the back for a decent price, though I didn't actually use them, so I cannot vouch for their cleanliness. The cafe itself was OK -- it could use another round of staff coming by to wipe the tables. The magazine and newspaper selection is excellent! I wish I could split this review in two parts. The first part would give them 5 stars and rave reviews for being the best coffee shop in town. The ambiance is amazing, laid-back and down-right cozy. Their tubs and saunas are hot and I love the Scandinavian style. Plus, their outdoor seating provides a secret garden like feel. The second review would be 3-stars for the saunas/hot tubs because of their pricing structure being kind of ridiculous. If you want to rent a sauna by yourself, for instance, you will pay $9 per half-hour. However, if you wish to add one person, but also use only 1 sauna for 1/2 hour, then you pay twice the price! How does this make sense? Shouldn't I be paying an incremental per person cost after the initial rental of the space? I'd appreciate if going in on a 1/2 hour suana with 3 people somehow cut down on the cost. Shouldn't it? Also, they only take $1 off the cost for renting a full hour. After each visit, regardless of time, they need to transition and clean saunas, which means they probably loose around 10-15 minutes per two half-hour sessions. It seems to me they would benefit greatly from trying to promote full hour sessions... Lastly, you'll often find that no reservations are available when you call. However, from speaking with employees, you'll also learn that a rather large percentage doesn't show up. I'd personally appreciate having the option of getting on a reserve list. Or, lets say that there's 5 reservations made for 8pm, they could suggest stopping by at that time, or imply the large possibility that there'll be an opening. Ultimately, what I'd like to say is that I love this place and give it 4-stars. read more

I heard about this place and have wanted to check it out for over a year now. Recently I got the chance while hanging out with a friend. We went inside and ordered two Chai lattes. We sat down to wait for our drinks to be ready, and though it was a bit cramped, it was comfortable. The kitty sitting on our table was a super affectionate little beggar (my friend was chowing down on some orange chicken she'd brought with her, and the cat seemed offended at not being offered her fair share). I was very impressed when I walked up to the counter to fetch our drinks. They were in these cool mugs with matching saucers, rather than the paper cups I expected. I still want to try the hot tubs, if I can ever convince my fiance, but so far I definitely give the place five stars. FYI - it's much cheaper than Starbucks! read more

Very, very cool place! We tried to make a same day reservation, alas it was full. Since we were visiting Humboldt, and this was our last night in Arcata, we decided it would be worth it to try the in-house waiting list, in hopes someone with a reservation wouldn't show up. If not, no big deal. While we waited I had a soy chai tea latte. Could be spicier, but delicious none the less, I enjoyed it. The atmosphere is cozy, tavernesque, and the resident cat was fun to have around. By some stroke of luck our (short) wait was fruitful and we got a hot tub. The experience reminded me of depictions of old Japanese bathhouses, with the large wooden tubs. The tub was wooden inside and out, with a small staircase next to it leading to a level area where one could also sit outside of the tub. My only complaint, if you will, was that the towels you are provided with (50 cents extra) are tiny, they were basically dish towels. Bring your own towel! Definitely one of the coolest experiences from our trip, would recommend it to everyone. :) read more

Lovely place. Every employee i have come across at Cafe Mokka has been top notch. Their espresso beverages are consistently good, and served in a timely matter. I've not waited long for my drink, even with a big crowd there. The only thing, in my opinion, which would knock it over the top is to have better baked items. If you are going to have them, they should be the best. The hot tubs are very clean. This has impressed me to go back and indulge myself as much as I can. The service and atmosphere, the beauty inside and outside.. outstanding. The restrooms are charming and extremely clean (they couldnt be cleaner). To top it off... is the price! So reasonable! If its your first time going, and you feel kind of clutsy about it.. don't worry. They are very good at showing a person around, every detail, answering every question. My personal favorite.. I've been here once and loved the hot tub. I'm not much of a hot tub person, but this was very enjoyable. It's fairly expensive for what it is, and I don't enjoy their coffee. I do not suggest you take your children to this venue because couples go here. I love that the hot tubs are outside but secluded. It's definitely worth a go. read more
