    SHRIMP CURRY PLATE
    Kristi C.

A hidden gem!! The curry was absolutely amazing - packed with flavor and veg but didn't leave me feeling food coma-ed out. I'd say the curry was my favorite by far and it def was a sizeable portion for more people. Service was kind and you can tell they care about their customers. It was quieter inside too so you can def have more convos easier !! Def would suggest hitting this spot up

Large quiet space with counter service. Had great meal with the fish cutlet (croquettes), coconut sambol with parotta and the spinach curry. Serviings were generous.

First time having spicy chicken mustard curry and it was great! Highly recommend! A lot of flavor and the parotta was a nice compliment to the dish!

My friend Nali and I were so happy to eat authentic Sri Lankan food here. It was all very delicious. We ordered several dishes to make sure we had enough to take home for later. The fish cutlets were nicely spicy with a wonderfully crispy crust. I liked the kiosk ordering and the service was very friendly. We dined in and enjoyed the look and feel of the restaurant. I forgot to take pictures of the food which was beautifully presented because we couldn't wait to eat it! I will definitely be back the next time I am in Chicago!

This place was great! The food was delicious. Nice level of spice and good serving sizes. Service was a bit slow but not an issue. Spacious bare-bones dining room. Daal good, pakora nice, chapatis good, Kothu Roti was fantastic. It is handy to have their menu up on your phone while ordering since the self service ordering menu doesn't have pictures...

I'm originally from Sri Lanka. Was in Chicago for work and saw that there was a Sri Lankan restaurant. Went there with few Sri Lankan friends. Not a fancy place. Walk upto the counter, order on a screen, and they deliver food to your table. But, the food was fantastic and so authentic. It was so good that I took a group of coworkers later in the week. Everything was fabulous. We had cutlets, Chinese rolls, jackfruit, dal, lamb, eggplant stir fry and chicken. We tried a few dishes that were super spicy. The restaurant also made a few very mild for the people in the group that couldn't handle spicy food. Can't wait to come back to Chicago and go to cafe Nova again.

thank GOD for cafe nova or i wouldn't have a taste of home anywhere in this city!!! i used to live closer to this part of town a couple years ago before moving closer to the city, and they've remodeled this restaurant beautifully since then. id definitely call ahead if you're planning on coming around opening time (11AM), because they weren't really ready to open the restaurant when we came at 11:15, but they apologized profusely as i think they were running late (it happens). to eat, we got the: fish cutlets - crispy outside and perfect mix inside of spices, fish, and potatoes. chicken kothu roti - SO yummy & exactly what you want if you know kothu. i love the textural variation of kothu roti and they've nailed it. eggplant curry - pretty much exactly how my mom makes it except they also add bell peppers which adds a rlly nice element of sweetness & added nutritional value which, if you're anything like me, is a huge plus. the only thing i'd say about the food is that it is a little bit on the oilier side. we got everything at a medium spice level, which is perfect if you want a kick & to break a sweat without needing to drink a gallon of water after every bite , aka perfect for Chicago winter weather. having grown up eating sri lankan food, I'd say this is the real deal! i really want to come back to try their string hoppers & all of their other curries, honestly. i'd recommend this to everyone - sri lankans looking for a taste of home or anyone who wants to try sri lankan food for the first time

Great food & very nice people here at cafe nova. So happy there's a place nearby that serves exciting south Asian food for a change. So many varieties & choices for both vegetarian & non-veg.

Nice variety of food…read morethat is made fresh and is reasonably priced. ===== I first heard of this place from Reddit and it was described as a good grocery with a food court. The food court part definitely rang true, but I was surprised at how small the grocery store was. I think Metro Spice Mart by Presidential Towers is 20 times bigger than the store here, though it was nice to see that they had fresh injera. You can probably find the basics here, but the grocery part definitely takes a backseat to the food court part, which I'm not exactly complaining about. The food court has a really nice menu with pictures all across one of the walls. Everything looked and smelled really great, and I definitely want to try more of the menu next time! We got some paratha, samosas, kheer, halwa, chai, and a beef roll recently. The paratha took a while since it was made fresh, but the buttery flavor was superb and I'd definitely order it again. Would definitely get the kheer again, too. The samosas came with a yogurt and a tamarind sauce, which I appreciated. The beef roll was a little dry, though a decent size. I don't generally like halwa and this one had a perfumey flavor my family didn't like. The chai was fine. I like how it's near a bunch of other large Asian grocery stores. Next time I'm in the area and have a hankering for Indian/Pakistani food, will definitely be back!

I arrive within twenty-one minutes buying only a quarter's worth of time at the parking meter thinking surely that would be enough time to grab my carryout order? Guys, why was I waiting an additional twenty minutes for food when nobody was in this restaurant? I hate when a restaurant draaaaaaags without giving any reasons. Thali shops have literal fast food. Not in the American sense but the foods are as simple as crepes (dosa) served with chutney. The other items would need more time. Curries, biriyani, etc Ordered an onion dosa and a masala dosa. Texture was different from what I'm accustomed to eating. But I'm wanting something similar to South Indian style. The onion dosa contained what looked like a full, medium sized onion. In Southie style it should be pan fried till brown, sometimes incorporated into the dosa or stuffed inside, this was barely translucent. Didn't slap. The masala dosa was mid. Didn't touch much. Hate throwing away food but.. Not wasting the stomach on barely good. Something about the texture of the dosa wasn't... It just wasn't good. One and done. If a restaurant offers dosa, it's gotta be great. Maybe their other foods are better?

Unfortunately they were out of the tingmo, so I got the garlic naan instead. My partner got the chow mein with chicken (fair warning, the chow mein noodles are spicy!) However, they are not without their kinks that need to be worked out - growing pains, if you will. I ordered the Butter Chicken with rice. Getting the food took somewhere between 10-15 minutes. I am going to assume it was made fresh, but considering it was just rice, chicken in sauce, and a couple veggie slices, I couldn't tell you for sure. With the veggie slices, I am left wondering "why?" It was a couple slices of carrot and cucumber. They lacked any kind of preparation or seasoning (not even salt), and took up half the tray. Again, why? The rice, meanwhile, was cooked perfectly. It wasn't at all sticky, and each grain could be seperated. The issue here is with portion size. Rice not only serves as a carb/starch element, but also works to absorb sauce. While I don't like it, I understand why a business would skimp on proteins... but skimping on rice seems, for lack of a better term, inappropriate. Then we come to the protein. There was an ample amount of chicken. The meat itself was tender, and the sauce had good flavor. While not mind-blowing, it had a mild heat, and light tomato, cream, and spice notes. While I would have liked the flavors to be bolder, I cannot in good conscious call the dish bland. Finally, there is the matter of price. After tax, the Butter Chicken came to just over $14. Even though I appreciate that nothing is cheap anymore, this felt a little excessive considering the quality and quantity of food I received. Final verdict: While Kathmandu Cafe had great potential, andn I am especially looking forward to trying their momo, as well as their Tibetan menu, where it comes to the Indian side of their menu, I do not feel a draw to return and order more.
