This simple diner offers a serviceable breakfast of predictable basics: eggs, omelets, etc. The omelet specials are typically worthwhile. Unfortunately, our lunch and dinner experiences were abysmal: a chicken caesar wrap that was virtually inedible (and barely wrapped), with oily/flavorless dressing and soggy french fries. The hamburger was similarly bad, leaving us to wonder why they bother with anything other than breakfast. Service is friendly and efficient. The dining area is simple but pleasant. Cafe on the Common is a traditional 'go to place' for Breakfast or Brunch. The lines on Saturday and Sunday "forget about it" crazy. The place is packed and people will wait in long lines to get in. Having gone to Cafe on the Common for years - the most impressive thing is the specials - always throwing a twist on the traditional Eggs Benedict - which is why I go there - love to see what the cooks will come up with next. The Menu is comprehensive and can be overwhelming to someone who has never eaten there - but for the people who go there often, like me, you know the items that this place truly does the best. I am also impressed that Café on the Common has stayed strong - many other breakfast places have come and gone in Mansfield - but this is a destination place and has remained strong. I love the Eggs Benedict dishes - from traditional to the specials - you name it, they will do it. I love the Prime Rib Eggs Benedict, Crab Cake version, to just Tomatoes, Cheese and Eggs topped on the English muffin. Food is consistent and plentiful. Watch out for Pancakes - the cover the plate and often I have seen people order one in addition to another breakfast item and are shocked at the size of it. Service can be a little rushed and impersonal - but considering an open table is at a premium - I will give them a pass on this one. Coffee is always flowing and the atmosphere is buzzing. Be prepared to be in a line if you go on Saturday or Sunday - but it is worth it. Parking can be the other challenge - the street fills up quick - so you may have to park at City Hall or the street next to it and walk a bit. The place could use a remodel (or at least find something to hang on the walls - like photo's of destination or historical places in Mansfield would be nice) - it's a little plain and has been the same for years. But you go for the food and quickly get wrapped up into the busy atmosphere and before you know it - you are done. read more

I've only ever walked out on 1 movie and 1 restaurant in disgust. These two holders of distinguishment in my life are The Thin Red Line and Cafe on the Common. My sister and I chose this place as a meet up in the middle between our places for some early get together. Let me save you, the reader, a lot of time by sparing you a LOT of derogatory opinions and just give you the cliff notes and the nitty. My sister arrived 3 minutes before I did. She reports that it was busy and that the hostess passed over her twice in adding her name to the waiting list and instead attended to TWO sets of customers as they walked through the door. I walked through the doors, saw my sister and joined her in looking around at the other people and the hostess doing her thing. I was wearing a bright green jacket. Much, MUCH brighter than the dark coats of everyone else waiting to be seated. This seemingly random fact will fit in the near future. I continued standing around and watching this hostess who hadn't taken a name for me or my sister as of yet. I also watched as she asked for the name for a set of customers RIGHT as they walked through the door. After a minute, a couple came through the doors and the hostess who had been looking the other way swiveled around upon hearing the door open, walked over and asked for THEIR party name. I couldn't believe what I was seeing/enduring. I..... was..... pissed........... I yelled, "Hey, we were here first!". The hostess woman stared at me icily, turned to my sister and then through gritted teeth asked her her name. In hindsight, I should have actually said, "Hey, what's your problem!?" because we were there 1st, four other times. How could this attentive woman have missed my sister and then my entrance? How could she not have noticed the pretty asian girl and the dude in the bright green snowboard jacket as new additions to the waiting area? Anyway, I decided right then to leave before I could make some bad decisions, and for the record I left the restaurant steaming and swearing. read more

Will admit I'm thankful we went back for a second try at this restaurant. Our first encounter we had a very rude waitress when we first moved to the area 3 months ago. She acted as if we didn't exist so we had to keep asking random waitresses for service. Then we decided to go in yesterday morning for breakfast. Just giving it another swirl. Our waitress Rachel I believe was her name gave exceptional service. She was very attentive to our needs and her smile made me forget about those Southern grits I miss so much from back home. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a locally owned place that beats out the chains of Cracker Barrel and Waffle House. Food was cooked fresh and the taste was on point. She's not smiling at me now so I can say if they whip me up some grits I would come back and give them 10 stars. Keep up the great work. Definitely a mixed experience. We used to go here frequently. When the food is good, it's very good; and a great menu. Unfortunately, it's a bit uneven and the food is not always good. What's much more uneven is the service. they are far more interested in what's convenient for them than in providing good customer service. HORRIBLE customer service!!! The only reason this review is even getting a star is because the food was pretty good. The corned beef hash however, was a generic canned variety. Sub par at best. We went here mother's day morning with a larger part of 10. We called ahead the day before and made sure they could accommodate us. We arrived and were told our table will be ready in 20 minutes. 40 minutes later, we were told that eight seats were available, but there was a table of two who were done eating but have not departed yet. We had four young kids with us who were getting very restless and decided that we will have 8 people sit down while we wait for the rest of the seats to open up. As we try to sit with the younger kids the other two customers tell us, very nicely that they are about to leave and were just waiting for their change. I went over to the hostess to ask her for more chairs (since there were only 8 provided for our table of 10) and found her loudly speaking to another employee about us. She said we were very rude people who were muscling out their customers. I called her on her comments, explained we did nothing of the sort, that the other people were very nice and were already getting up to leave. I said it was rude of her to speak of us that way, were we not also their customers. She continued to be rude, rolled her eyes, and stormed off. If this rude, obnoxious person is the hostess, the first impression of the establishment why would anyone ever come back. We surely will not! read more

Food was great, Bathrooms where clean, But okay waiter. Now the drinks where just like name brand stuff like Minute made, coke, etc. The only thing made there was, the iced tea. The breakfast was good, came out like in 5-10 minuets. I got eggs, bacon, toast, pancakes, and Home-Fries the Home fries where really good, but my favorite was Home-fries and it was good! The best breakfast in the area! The waiter was okay, the only thing bad about the place, the waiter really did not care about anyone. She was on her phone the whole damn time! Cafe on the Common never dissapoints. I've been going there for years with friends and family, many of whom have food allergies or are gluten free and they are very accommodating. The service, however, occasionally be hit or miss, but for the most part is terrific. The coffee is refilled often and the servers ask if there is anything else that you require. The menu is vast. Great local breakfast place!! The omelets and frittata are terrific and they have the best homemade waffles around! I wish that they offered real maple syrup, that would be fabulous! read more

Warmed over to the point of over cooking breakfast meats, warmed over home fries tasting of scorched oil, crisp edged eggs rather than crisp toast or english muffins. One would think for the price you could get fresh food cooked from scratch with a reasonable amount of competency. We try here every now and again as it is the only breakfast shop close by these days and from takeout melting the foam containers to the aforementioned type of problems, they never fail to disappoint. I always used to go to the Foxboro Common, however, recently tried here instead. The service is fast and the food is higher quality to me. The menu is also better, offering items such as mimosas! Simple things like their home fries had far more flavor than Foxboro's Common. I would definitely recommend here! read more

My boyfriend and I went here last weekend and I have to say it was fabulous! Not surprisingly, we pig out every time we go out to breakfast and this time was not different. I got a Belgium waffle, egg whites, sausage, bacon and an english muffin. My boyfriend got french toast, home fires, a ton of bacon and an english muffin as well. The food was absolutely fantastic. First off, I was super excited and pleasantly surprised they had egg whites, which just happen to be my favorite, and they cooked them perfectly. Next I dove into the Belgium waffle which was perfect! I was craving a waffle and they did not disappoint! Super fluffy, yet crispy, with plenty of butter. My boyfriends french toast was also a unique twist that we have been noticing many breakfast places are using. Instead of the typical pieces of bread, most places are now using two long pieces of french bread which is so much better than regular bread! It was crispy and fluffy with lots of butter and just the right amount of cinnamon. We went on a Sunday which meant it was ridiculously packed and though we don't mind waiting for a table, it took us 15 minutes to find the person we were suppose to give our name too. The only other issue we really had was the service. Don't get me wrong our waitress was very kind and sweet; however, we waited about 20 minutes just to put our drinks in and almost half an hour to get our bill. Thats a little frustrating when you really just want to head out and continue your day. Nonetheless, the food was delicious so perhaps she was new or stressed so we forgive!Lastly, the mimosa that my boyfriend got was not something we would recommend - at least not at 10 am. There was barely any orange juice, it looked like dirty water instead. Typically he wouldn't care but he would prefer to not be on his butt the entire day because of one over the top strong drink. For the exception of going on New Years Day...the overall experience was fantastic. From the small town charm...to the fresh aroma of sweet tasty pancakes!! Service with a smile...and happy ending...jk My corned beef hash breakfast was amazing...best I've ever had. You can't get enough of the home fries they offer...with crisp bacon (which was only four strips...not 6 or 7 like advertised in the another review :( just fyi ) and fresh brewed coffee...this New Years day will go down in history (like George Washington) The other members of my party were extremely impressed with their OJ and Choco Milk...very yummy. The jelly packets were fresh too!!!!!!!!! Their omelets were ginormous, and two had to take half of it home, while the other found his second wind and ate it all... Actually it's been an hour and a half since I ate and Im still pleasantly stuffed. I'm actually considering taking a nap...who knows. Cafe on the Common is always a good spot to grab breakfast. Their menu is pretty extensive and they also have lunch offerings although I have always stuck with the breakfast foods. The lines can be a bit long as can the wait for your food, but it has always been well prepared in my experiences there. You pay at the register before you leave and depending on how busy they are, it can sometimes take a while to get a server's attention to come and ring you out. That said, unless you are in a rush it's worth the wait. read more

I happened to be in town for a wedding and needed to find some breakfast/lunch food so I stumbled into this place at about 1pm on a Saturday. Rumor has it this place is packed for the morning, but it was pretty much empty at 1pm. I opted for the scrambled eggs in potato skins with cheddar cheese sauce. The potatoes are crispy and the eggs were plentiful (WAY more than just two). The cheese sauce was fine, but nothing mind-blowing. She mentioned Swiss and mozzarella. Cheddar? She hesitated, not sure but not volunteering to check, and said 'they usually substitute mozzarella for cheddar.' Huh? Weird on a couple of levels: one, cheddar is a pretty standard option, not uncommon or fancy but the not having it wasn't the problem. I also can only vouch for the breakfast menu, which has lots of standard fare and some interesting items and specials. I'll usually sit at the bar, read the paper and enjoy a coffee and hearty breakfast every time I bring my car in for service at a nearby garage ..... which makes me a visitor every 3,000 miles or so. The fact that there's usually cute waitresses (Melissa looks like Jessica Alba) and consistantly good quality food makes this more than worthy. Unless the line is too long. read more
