Worst first time and last time ever going!! Didn't even get our food due to the kitchen being backed up! Yet they still had the nerve to charge us for the drink! I wouldn't even leave a star but that's the only way we can leave a review.. we seen ppl who had been obviously waiting longer than us.. who were after the fact offered chips and salsa for the wait when the were as well about to walk out.. they had more time and patience then us.. we paid for the one drink and left.. place had ample seating but why have so many seats if you cannot uphold to the crowd you will have.. I think they should work on the service before trying to fill a restaurant you obviously can't serve!! read more

Today 06/14/2021, first time there. Server forgot our appetizer, the food is just ok, our server did not seem to put her best customer service forward. I did not feel welcomed or appreciated as a customer. I believe her name is Jane , needless to say no tip was left. Very sad first impression. read more

We waited 15 minutes before being served and another 50 minutes for our breakfast to come out. Our waiter did not care at all and I'm pretty sure she was a manager. Ive been coming to COTS for several years now. The summary of this place is "How little can you possibly try and still maintain a restaurant on the square." I use to spend a lot of time here drinking coffee and nipping away at food while studying. The prices have continued to rise while the totally unimpressive food keeps increasing in price. Im pretty sure the coffee has actually gotten worse. The only redeeming quality is that the waitresses have almost always been super friendly and happy to provide goid service. read more

I read some pretty negative reviews of this place. Well, the family and I decided to go anyway. Heck, it was Easter brunch time and we were passing through town. I called and they said they were open, so yay! We headed right over. The food was great! We got the fluffiest pancakes! Sure, it's not the cleanest or newest joint, but who gives a toss!?! All I saw was a bunch of young folks running this place, kudos to them for being so hard working. Big plus on the heavy weight dinnerware! Made me sentimental for the diners of yore. read more

In town for the weekend and looking for a hearty early Sunday morning breakfast that was not TexMex, this was the only place we could find that was open before 1130. The staff was accomodating and friendly, and the menu pretty standard. I ordered the bacon swiss omelette and the BF ordered the chicken fried steak breakfast plate. The omelette arrived with three cheese slices draped over the top and melted - not entirely what I was expecting but the bacon was good. I had requested the hashbrowns 'extra crispy' and they were. BF's chicken fried steak was no bigger than a tea saucer, but he said the flavor kind of made up for it; he reported the pancakes were alright. Nothing spectacular, but nothing wrong with it either. Came in for brunch. Only the second time I've eaten here but the first time for a brunch so it was packed. They were apparently changing ticketing systems so things were a bit hectic for the staff. Took a good ten minutes or so before someone stopped by our table, luckily the SO and I have worked in the food industry so we are understanding when it's busy. But we almost left due to the wait, the 'seat yourself' method is hard to deal with when it's busy as a waiter as someone sitting down can go unnoticed. Ultimately the staff wasn't handling the brunch rush well due to the ticketing change so food and everything took a while to come out. Once it came out though, the huevos rancheros was great! This place couldn't be any less organized or prepared. I was so shocked to see how unprepared and chaotic they were for a Sunday breakfast. It took us 10 minutes to get sat down and then another 20 to place our drink order and it tooK 45 min for the food. You would think it was their first day open. Cafe on the Square doesn't have the best food in town. But the atmosphere is great, and they do a decent job with basic breakfast food. The price is right, too. They also have the hottest waitresses in town, bar none. This is a big factor for me :) read more

Do not waste your time with this place. The first time I ate there was for breakfast and it was decent and cheap. However, I had a horrible experience the second time I went there for lunch. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with a chicken tortilla soup. The soup was flavorless. It was basically warm water with pieces of chicken and tortilla chips in it. I tried to save it with some salt and pepper but my efforts failed miserably. The sandwich itself had the grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato, and something that appeared to be cheese. Needless to say, I took the "cheese" out. I ended up not eating the sandwich as a safety precaution. After that experience, I do not expect to go back to this place any time soon, if ever. read more

Primary reason for low rating: SLOWWWWW service. Took about 30 minutes to get one club sandwich and one order of French toast. And they weren't even crowded. This place is quaint, relaxing, and always has quality food. I used to go here often when I was a Texas State student and still stop by if ever I am in town. I order the chorizo and egg. It is waaaay less greasy than when ordering it at a Mexican restaurant. The coffee here is amazing as well. read more

This place is your typical small town greasy spoon diner. If you're looking for creative or inspired food, don't bother with this place, but if you're looking for a cheap hangover soother, this place is great. We go here for breakfast/brunch sometimes and I've never been blown out of the water by the food but it's always satisfying. I like their migas for breakfast, inauthentic though they may be, and they also serve gigantic bowls of grits. I've heard their pancakes are decent though I've never tried them. Coffee refills are free, which is always a plus, especially since their coffee isn't awful and better than a lot of other diners in the area. Basically, if it's a choice between this and IHOP, come here. The food is better and the dining area isn't populated by hordes of stinky bikers. read more

perfect place to go after a long night, havent had anything from the breakfast menu that i didnt like. reminds me a lot of home cooking, the french toast isn't as good as my mom's but it'll do while im up at school as a replacement! i'd say its definitely a place for the locals, wouldn't recommend it to any one from out of town looking for a good place to eat. you probably won't be impressed with the service or the food. definitely better than ihop, but its not any fine dining. oh, and smoking inside is allowed, so if you enjoy the smell of cigarette smoke while eating then you'll love the cafe, if not i'd suggest not going, or sitting at one of the two tables outside. ++free wifi! read more

We did the $10 for $20 Yelp Deal and had a great experience eating outside on the sidewalk. Even when I went inside to pay and use the restroom, I didn't find the smoke overwhelming, but that's just me. The food is great diner-style grub - I had the veggie omelet with extra-crispy home fries and my boyfriend had the chicken fried steak and eggs plate. Both of them were really good and for the price (thanks to the Yelp deal!), I can't complain. So the food is not always consistent here, but I like it. My father in law loves the place so we go alot. The waitress we always get is always very friendly and fast. I get a breakfast burrito. Hands down, my favorite place to eat breakfast! I crave their delicious migas made with tons of cheese & fresh veggies. The potato wedges are always a little dry, but I like 'em dipped in refried beans & white cheese. Yum! It was the day after my wife and I dropped off our son to begin his freshman year at Texas State and were in a funk. We decided to get a bite to eat around 1:30 before getting on the road home. So stopped into this charming cafe. Morgan was our server and was extraordinary! My wife ordered a veggie omelet with lots of dietary restrictions and I had a sausage and egg omelet. Huge portions with great sides! I tried their fried pickles as an app and they were awesome. Couldn't finish my meal! The service and food was all just great and we decided that we had found our place for breakfast and brunch when we come to visit our son. Bottomless coffee was a plus! First and last time dining here. Thought I would give this place a try but I am so disgusted. While trying to eat, we had about 5 flies around us, and we sat inside. The dinner salad was probably the worst part of the lettuce because it was mostly white and yellow. My first order was burnt (meatloaf) and dry so I ordered something different, my second plate was worse. I felt bad so I ate so of it. after three amazing years of living in san marvelous, i FINALLY traipsed over to cafe on the square. not only is breakfast served all day (!) but cafe's menu is expansive. from american to mexican, there is a dish to satisfy any taste. my father and i ordered the chicken fajitas for two with black beans and corn tortillas. the polite waitress proceeded to refill out water glasses and went to place our order. about 7 minutes later, a sizzling tray of fajitas was placed on our table. the spread was huge. there was pico de gallo, fajitas, black beans, guacamole, shredded lettuce, corn tortillas and spanish rice. it was very delicious! i will definitely be going back soon. read more

Visited this place with my gf this morning. Seemed like this is not th place for minorities. From th looks of everyone as we walked in, we felt as if we were expected to have used th rear entrance. Food was good but we waited 15 - 20 minutes for breakfast tacos. When we stood to leave, again we were stared at as if we were doing something wrong.
