Let me start with - this place is not awful. However, in my opinion it is 2 stars because it was not what I was looking forward to when I was in search of "breakfast & brunch". When we walked in, we were not greeted (not a huge deal) but I had to awkwardly catch someone's attention to find out if I could seat myself. Secondly the menu is not a classic American breakfast, again not bad but they should advertise that they sell Mexican/Southwestern style food with a French toast option. Also, they charge $1.70 for an al la carte egg (annoying). If you know to seat yourself, want a Mexican style breakfast, and don't mind the loud noise level then try it out. If that is not your cup of tea, I wouldn't suggest this place. read more

Fresh food at a decent price, my fiancee' and I went a couple days ago. I came by here today because I was visiting the area and hadn't been here in a few years....could of had better. It took 10 minutes for my friend and I to get service after we were seated. I went there for one reason and one reason only, biscuits and gravy. The server told me she thought they were out, but turns out they weren't after I had her go and check. Took forever to get coffee refills. Took forever for food to be served. In the end the biscuits and gravy were not that great. I'm pretty sure McDonald's served better biscuits and gravy back in the day. My friend had the Spanish omelet which looked great until she got to the middle of it and it looked as though a handful of jalapenos were just stuffed in the very center. Bad service. Food was a disappointment. Won't be back. Now I remember why I hadn't ate there in so long. Lolitas or iHop would have been more satisfactory. read more

A friend and I went there for breakfast. We sat down and waited. We waited for about 10 minutes just to get menus and order a drink. We finally ordered waters and were waiting to order. We waited a good 15 minutes and realized the waitress wasn't coming to help because it seemed like for the whole restaurant was only one waitress. It was way too long of a wait. I really wanted to eat there but for a service that slow, I could only imagine how long it would have taken if we actually ordered food. This is the worst place I've eaten in San Marcos. We went in for lunch and had to wait an hour and a half for pretty awful food. Our waitress rarely came around to fill up water cups and she never even acknowledged or apologized for our food taking so long. I got the grilled chicken sandwich with fries. That's a pretty hard order to mess up. The sandwich was dry, chicken was overcooked, and the fries were terrible. Everyone else in our party said their food wasn't great either. Until about 6 months ago my husband and I had been going to lunch there about 3 times a month for 5 or 6 years. Because we both work at the university it is a convenience, Having said that, we will soon be finding another place to go. Our last few trips there have been less than stellar. The queso, which had been among the best I had ever tasted, has now been reduced to a lump of cheddar cheese floating in it's own oil. I don't know if they changed cheeses, recipes, cooks, or what but the queso now sucks *ss. Obviously, a cheaper cheese is being used because by the time the queso reaches the table it has separated and is completely unappealing. The chips rock and the guac is still good but the queso needs a change badly. Maybe the owner/manager, or whoever she is, needs to quit being so "friendly" with the male patrons and start paying attention to the goings-on in the kitchen. Try the queso, lady, and tell me whether you would eat that or not. Go back to the old recipe, fire the cook, get better cheese or something. You've lost two very long standing customers because of it. Another drawback is that they have a section (albeit in the very back) where smoking is allowed. Even though it is in the back, the smoke still permeates throughout the entire restaurant and when you get a stinky turd smoker (aka cigar smoker) in there, it is unbearable. I stand by my previous statement that the woman running the establishment needs to pay less attention to the male patrons and more attention to the ambiance and the food. read more

I am not sure how I feel about this little cafe. Me and my friend tried this place at last minute. I probably won't be returning to this place. I could tell that the food wasn't all that fresh as you can hear them using the microwave in the back. I requested for Sour Cream, and I was handed a little packet. The Chicken Fried Steak was overcooked. The server described it as being "tender" and "easy to cut through". The owners should consider updating their menu and adding more popular items that is often requested such as macaroni and cheese. The diner should be updated as well. Waited an hour for the worst omelette ever! The omelette had a piece of ham left inside of what looked like scrambled eggs but most definitely nothing resembling an omelette. This place is very clean and is everything you would expect from a cafe. The staff is kind and friendly, even under pressure. The food however took a very long time to come out, once it did arrive it was cold. Everything was well cooked, and tasted as expected, the only thing was that the food was cold. We just moved to San Marcos a few days ago and after a long day at work, the husband and I decided to check out the local cuisine. It was a little past 10pm so there wasn't much open, so we decided to give Café a shot. We asked if they were still serving, since we didn't want to keep them if they were closing up soon. The waitress told us there was plenty of time and sat us down. We were given our menus and were completely unrushed. My husband got the King Ranch Chicken and I got the Gyro Salad. The prices were cheap for the quality of the food, very tasty and the service staff were attentive and friendly. We ended up leaving at 10:45pm, a bit past closing time but everyone was friendly about it. I will definitely be making this my new haunts for a late meal after work or school. read more

Good food at a fair price. The fried pickles were amazing and a good sized portion. I had the Patty Melt with a side of onion rings and I had no complaints. The burger patty was juicy and well seasoned and the rye bread perfectly toasted. My husband had the Fried Catfish special and his only complaint was the fries tasted like it had been sitting out for a while, aside from that, it was a good and filling meal. This place is just not good. Every time I come here the food is awful. They have the worst French toast I've ever tasted, they just flattened a regular piece of white bread and burned one side on the pan and served the other side up, so dry and flat it's almost inedible. Waited an hour and 10 minutes for food to come out. I ordered French toast plate, with a side of bacon. My girlfriend ordered Philly cheesesteak. After waiting as long as We did, the food was finally delivered. The bacon was COMPLETELY TOAST. Clumped up in a rock hard ball and totally disgusting. The French toast was also burned, but I figured I'd waited this long I've just got to get some food in me.. I'll pour syrup over it and just get it down. Took a bite of French toast and diced onions and peppers oozed out the center. Seriously? I asked for the manager. A super unhelpful lady came over, and after my explanation, offered to take off the French toast from the bill. Stay away from the chicken caldo, it was the worst soup I have ever tasted. The soup was sour like it had been sitting in the fridge for a few days then re-heated and served. Well I hate giving bad reviews but every once in a while...... So we found the are on yelp and made it there without any problems... Let me start by saying I am a smoker but sitting in an eating establishment while people are smoking is a huge turn off and there was no distinct different area for the smokers, just at the back.... The place was crowded and the wait, after we sat down was about an hour. The waitress was good but very rushed. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and was more than less impressed, how do you mess up biscuits and gravy... The prices were good but I would think twice about going back. read more

The food was delicious!!! Great prices and more than enough food for your money. Wait was a little long for our food but well worth the wait. One of us had the breakfast taco with chorizo, egg and cheese which was the best breakfast taco I've ever had!! I can eat a lot and (3) tacos and hash browns was too much for breakfast.
