Our go to restaurant is under renovation so we decided to try this place. Absolutely gross. The rangoons had so much sugar in it! I ordered orange "chicken" , it tasted like cardboard, over cooked and super soggy with no orange flavor. So so from what we got. Fried tofu did not travel well. Don't order as take out. It doesn't hold. We couldnt eat ours as it was just mush. Sweet and sour chicken was crisp but mostly raw vegetables and a few pieces of chicken. Worst thing was the kung pao chicken. I would say that the best dish out of the tree was General Tso's but it's not the best I've had. It did have big chunks of white meat though. Lunch prices on a Saturday are a plus! I'm always on the hunt for a good American Chinese food place and very few places are up to par, but Cafe Opera is definitely top 5 for me. For our first experience, we ordered take out on a Friday night online. I opted for my safe choice: Chicken General Tao's and was surprised that there were customization options, so I added tofu. The BF opted for chicken drunken noodles and I added my favorite veggie spring rolls to the order. We arrived 15 minutes later and our food was ready! The staff was super friendly. The food was piping hot when we got home. I was very impressed that the General Tao's was all white meat, still crispy, a good amount of Tofu was added, and the sauce was thick and flavorful. The BF said his noodles were well cooked and the sauce was spicy as expected. The veggie spring rolls were filled with veggies, seasoned well, crispy, and not too thick. We decided to stop in for dinner after being unimpressed by another establishment across the street. The atmosphere was comfortable, but still casual and again we were greeted by very friendly staff. I was surprised they also had a nice cocktail/beverage menu. I was in the mood for something more authentic and was very happy to see they had MaPo Tofu on the menu. The BF opted for his go-to chinese dine in dish: Crispy Beef. Both dishes were excellent and had such generous protions we had enough to take home for another meal! The MaPo tofu was silky and spicy. I asked for chili oil and found out that they make that in house along with their other sauces. The crispy beef was perfectly crispy without drying out the meat. What I found even more impressive was that the beef was still crispy the day after when we ate it as leftovers! I think the food at Cafe Opera is pretty good, not really outstanding but just good. I have had mostly the Chinese dishes- Lo Mein, fried rice, chicken and broccoli and kung pao etc. Those are all average to good dishes. The dishes I have not liked are the chicken and cashew nuts- very, very bland...like hospital food and I had the Pad Thai Chicken one time and it was not good at all to me. However, this is our current Chinese food source in Ashburn, and we drive past quite a few others to go there so we have not found anything better in Ashburn. We have always found the owner of Cafe Opera to be very friendly and welcoming, she is very, very nice. We enjoy giving her our business. I don't really understand the Opera theme, but rarely eat in the restaurant. For comparison's sake, the Thai food I like best is Thai Tada in Herndon or Thai Luang, also in Herndon. Based on the other rave reviews for this place, I wanted to give it a try. I have an allergy to MSG, so my biggest concern about trying any new oriental restaurant is whether I'm going to have a run-in with my kryptonite nemesis. They do have MSG in some of their food, but the staff here at Cafe Opera was very friendly, understanding, and concerned about allergies, so they carefully investigated which foods would be "safe" for me. The food was pretty good, and I liked that they have a weight-watchers section to the menu. You could tell the ingredients were fresh. Unfortunately, it comes at a premium price. I had a little bit of sticker shock when I paid the bill. For an order of shrimp and veggies, an order of orange chicken, and an appetizer of crab rangoon, I paid a little over $30. Unforuntately, my kids are too used to the Panda Express variety of orange chicken, and having FRESH ingredients made them think it tasted "weird." They wouldn't eat it. I thought it was pretty good. I would rather eat this than the mass produced frozen and reheated stuff you get at Panda Express. The crab rangoon was pretty good, too. Cafe Opera is highly underrated, in my opinion. This little place has been here for years. It's got a nice modern appeal to it inside. They also stick to their name and have a projector that plays opera concerts on the wall. Umm...that I could definitely do without. They have the best Crab Rangoon - it's a bit sweet but not too sweet, which is the way I like it! I also love their Shrimp Fried Rice, very fresh shrimp that is never soggy like some other chinese take out I've had. Friends of mine have enjoyed the General Tso's chicken, and Beef with Broccoli, among other things. I would give them five stars, BUT, they are real sticklers about their minimum delivery. The quality and service has diminished slightly since it opened years ago, but overall it is still top notch over the competitors in the area. My friends and I used to have a game where we would see if we could finish our drinks before the servers refilled it, because they used to come by every two minutes to make sure that wasn't the case. Creamy, flavorful filling. Use some duck sauce to make it sing. Panang Chicken - Nice heat and great flavor; the kind of sauce you want to sop up with white rice. General Tso's Chicken - No skimping with the dark meat here; big chunks of white meat with a sauce that has a little bit of heat. Shrimp Pineapple Fried Rice - Incredible depth of flavor for a simple dish, and something you find yourself dipping your fork into long after the entrée is done. We live in the Broadlands and are lucky to have Cafe Opera so close. This is our go-to Chinese place. They also have some other Asian style food. We get delivery or take-out a lot, but the restaurant itself is comfortable with a nice decor and ambience. The name comes from them playing DVDs of operas (and often concerts) on a wall at background music level. My regular dishes here are the Thai Chicken Noodle Soup (similar to Pho Ga), the Taiwanese Vermicelli, Moo Shi, Chicken With Mixed Vegetables, and Roasted Duck with Duck Sauce. I've ordered the Chicken Teriyaki a few times and it's good, but doesn't taste as good as Japanese places do it. My husband loves the Golden Cup appetizer and General Tso's Chicken, which is all white meat. We were worried when another Chinese restaurant opened in the same strip mall two doors down, but Cafe Opera has so much fresher ingredients, better food and menu, and is a true sit-down restaurant you'd like to eat in, that it seems to be doing fine. read more

I've been eating food from Cafe Opera for years. I keep forgetting to review it, however! We have eaten a number of times in the restaurant. It's a small space, with only about 15 tables, but it's still got some decent ambience. A projector plays various operas on the half wall above the kitchen entrance, giving you something to watch or listen to while you wait. When the restaurant is crowded, the service can be a little slow, but nothing to really complain about. The proprietors are very friendly and will suggest menu items to you if you're not sure what you want. They will also alter orders to suit allergy or even just taste. So if a dish is marked as spicy, you can still ask for it mild. I do this all the time, because my palate is quite wimpy. Their food is Asian, not just Chinese. My son's favorite dish is their Sambel Prawns, which is from Indonesia. They also represent Vietnam, and Thailand, among others. If you're not in the mood to come visit them, they will always come visit you with their delivery service. You can order over the phone, or online. If you order online, you can still alter your choices by making special requests. Do you want your fried rice to have no vegetables, but extra shrimp, and maybe make it a little spicy? No problem! Ugh. Ordered the Crispy beef and egg rolls. The crispy beef had a strong metallic taste that is still lingering in my mouth. Kind of scary and definitely didn't finish it. Also, I ordered extra spicy and there wasn't a single hot pepper in my serving. The eggrolls were overly greasy and had next to no filing in them. Very, very disappointing. I would have only given a 1 star but have had decent meals there where the service was excellent and they are very family oriented.
