3.5 Stars Was visiting the orthodontist in the area and decided to try this place out with my girlfriend for lunch. This place is pretty cool looking inside with its classic decors. The menu features a wide variety of pan-asian cuisines ranging from Chinese, Thai, to Vietnamese. But its emphasis is primarily focused on Chinese and some Thai. I am not a big fan of asian-fusion type of restaurant trying to do it all. From previous experiences going to these asian-fusion types of restaurants, the foods were pretty bad and mediocre. If I am craving Thai, I would rather go to an authentic Thai restaurant and let the real Thai people cook me up some real pad-thai. Therefore, I did not order any of the non-Chinese cuisine and my rating here is based solely on the Chinese dishes we ordered. I got the General Tso's chicken lunch combo and my girlfriend got the Hunan chicken lunch combo. The combo meals come with a vegetable spring roll and a soda. The food here was pretty good and probably one of the better Chinese joint we can find in Ashburn. The General Tso's chicken was nice and crispy, but a tad too sweet and heavy on the sauces for my taste. My girlfriend liked her dish as well, it was cooked very well. The vegetable spring rolls was just ok, it came with the meals anyway. My only complaint about this place was its steep price. I am cheap, because I am Asian and I like good cheap Asian foods. And we thought Yen was pricey, this place actually was even pricier. For two lunch combos, our bills came out to about $20! Overall, we liked our first meals here. But will we return? Probably not, unless we are in the area again and craving Chinese food. But the steep sticker price will probably keep us away. Strangely, another Chinese joint (Happy Chopsticks) is located like literary right next to them. I have no idea why two Chinese joints are located so close to one another. I moved to Loudoun County in 2001 and have been frequenting Cafe Opera since then. The owners are so welcoming and make me feel a part of their family rather than a customer. Amazingly, their kitchen has remained consistently excellent from my first visit to now. Special favorites are Fried Rice, BBQ Spareribs, Ma Po Tofu, General Tso's Chicken, Crispy Beef and Vegetable Lo Mein. This is where me and my friends go at least once a week. The owner is incredibly kind, and server always make sure everything is on point. Once I asked for for someone and they were sold out so later he gave me a free appetizer with me meal. Everyone on is super nice, food and great (egg drop soup and orange chicken). Ordered Veggie fired rice with tofu and had a meat piece and in it. When I called them the response was very bad.

We walked I and found that it was a smaller restaurant. We were directed to a booth and out drink order was taken immediately. Our server Tin was beyond amazing. Her attitude was so positive and she gets really personal to everyone she serves. I came with my Service Dog and Tin was concerned about her by having room under the table and offered to have her move out next to the table if needed. We started with the spring rolls which were cooked perfect and had great Flavor especially when paired with the duck sauce. For the entree I order the chicken and broccoli while my dad ordered the general tso's chicken. The flavor was wonderful for the chicken and broccoli and my dad stated the the general tso's was the best he's ever had. Overall this restaurant was great. A soft atmosphere, very friendly energetic staff, great food, and very speedy service. We will be going back to enjoy Cafe Opera again. read more

I made my first visit to Cafe Opera today. I was quite impressed with a number of things, but have just a few small complaints as well. First, the good: The decor is lovely. Dark wood furniture, a yellow and brown color scheme, lighting that is neither too bright nor too dim. The atmosphere is nice as well. The projector playing operas that gives the place its name was not running when I visited, but there was some nice soft jazz playing. The service was excellent. (Probably helped by the fact that I was their only dine-in customer at the moment. It was an off-peak visit.) My drink was refilled before it even got empty, the staff checked up on me regularly, and answered my questions about the food. The food is where I have to deduct a star, however. I ordered sweet and sour chicken. What I got was good quality chicken, excellent white rice, (so many Chinese places manage to mess up simple white rice) nice presentation, and a tasty orange sauce that was nothing like sweet and sour at all. Perhaps that's because it's an Asian Fusion restaurant and not a true Chinese one? I can't say for sure, but while it was good, it was not what I wanted or expected. Based on the overall quality and experience, I will probably try Cafe Opera again, but I will have to go somewhere else for my sweet and sour fix. read more

The food here is wonderful, especially the vegetables in the Chinese dishes, which are fresh and flavorful. Sauces are tasty (though spicy dishes are toned down for Western tastes) without overwhelming the main ingredients. Surprisingly, the Thai dishes are also very good. And, the owners are very warm and friendly, to boot. Even in an area with lots of good Asian restaurants, Cafe Opera stands out. read more

First, I am torn for not giving this a 5-star rating, although I really want to. The reason for not giving it a 5-star rating after eating there only once and having only 4 different dishes out of so many dishes on their extensive menu is because I have not eaten their enough to give it a 5-star rating. I am definitely a fan of the excellent service, ambience and decor, Frankly, I don't think I've been to a better decorated Chinese restaurant. I am a fan of most of dishes we ordered to eat in and carry out today. What didn't meet our expectation was pad thai. Having said that about their pad thai, this place is a fusion of Asian foods. So, it does give them a poetic license to play with pad thai's recipe. Maybe they altered the recipe because I asked for no peanuts because of peanut allergy. We will definitely come back to taste other delicious-looking dishes on their menu and to experience their excellent hospitality! Just wish that they weren't 40 minutes drive from where we live and that the tolls cheaper on the Dulles Toll road and the Greenway toll road. read more

The cafe was close by and so decided to give it a try. This place has good food. We have tried Singapore rice vermicelli, Malaysian chow fun and drunken noodles. They adjust the level of heat spice you want.The kids had satay chicken and chicken fried rice from the kids menu. All of it tasted good, and we have taken take out from cafe opera 3 times now. This was about our 3rd time to order take-out and it got worse each time. Went back wanting it to be good. It's about 1 mile from our house so very convenient. List of items we ordered: FIRST - EXTREMELY SKIMPY ON THE VEGETABLES. 1. Hot and sour soup: I don't think anyone stirred the pot before serving. It was mainly broth with 1 or 2 pieces of tofu, maybe 1 smidgen of a piece of mushroom and 1 piece of bamboo shoot. And it tasted very vinegary, so the sour was definitely there. Chang's in Sterling still has the best Hot & Sour soup (full of mushrooms, tofu, bamboo, green onions, etc)! 2. Chicken with cashews: very bland, about 5 penny size pieces of carrot (no exaggeration!) and I asked for extra broccoli, well I can say broccoli was added the whole 3 very small florets. I was charged $1 more and on the order menu and there isn't anything stated that I will be charged more for adding broccoli. I can buy 1/2 pound of broccoli for what you charged me. I asked for light oil, not no flavor. 3. Snow Pea Beef: Absolutely NO FLAVOR AT ALL!!!! Again I asked for light oil and I think they left off the sauce completely. It tasted like cornstarch and water! The price online says it's $11.95 and I was charged $14.95. Again, I asked for mushrooms and asparagus to be added and the amount added is not worth any amount that you charged me extra for. It does not state on the menu that these items would be extra. I ordered on-line. Was simple and an easy way to get what you want and they say you get 10% credit toward next order. I had wanted to use a coupon that you have with your take-out menu but there aren't any codes on the coupons so the computer wouldn't take it without a code. I decided to go back up to the restaurant to talk to them about how disappointed we were with the meal. I explained everything to the man at the register (I think he one of the owners), then he called the manager (seemed to be his wife) over and had to explain all over again. They both told me they would talk to the technician person about the extra charge not stated online. When mentioned about the lack of vegetables, especially after being charged extra, she told me "your getting the experience of not having to cook and someone cooking for you so you can relax and enjoy your meal." The entire time I was speaking with the woman, the man sat there chuckling. I asked him what was so funny? No response. So I will give them 1 Star for reimbursing the over charge not stated on the online menu, but won't be returning! There attitude came across to me as very condescending and like they really don't care what my opinion is. WEGMANS HAS BETTER FROZEN CHINESE TAKEOUT FOR MUCH CHEAPER! read more

I was surprised that Cafe Opera is only 2 doors down from my favorite chinese takeout in Ashburn (Happy Chopsticks), but then I discovered that they are targeting different markets. Cafe Opera is more upscale and is a real dine-in restaurant. My Experience when I been to Cafe Opera in Broadlands last week, I made my order to go in the lunch time and this is about 1.30PM, the restaurant is empty with hardly 1 or 2 customers dinning in, my bill was about 2cents more than a rounding dollar, the owner has to break 20$ bill for 2Cents, and has to clear his cash box to give me 19.98$ change back :) Next think I was been told to wait for 15 mins, I waited for about 25 - 30 mins, and finally when I checked in to see my order for 2 people, the owner told me it should be any time in next 2 mins, I gave a wait for 5 mins and finally noticed the kitchen chef never got my order. I was so angry burning mine and my mates stomach with hungry, finally got the order about 45- 50 mins wait time, this is when no customers for Dinning in, so pissed off with wait. When we had our lunch noticed there is too much of salt and end up trashing the food. I will never go back nor recommend any customers, being so much pricy and such a worse customer service. First the service is outstanding. From a kind welcome to a polite farewell, you will always leave feeling comfortable and cared for. The owner (Tin) is very attentive and a pleasure to talk with. Over all a lovely individual. All The Cafe's dishes are extremely fresh and well made every time. Flavor is a priority here. You will definitely taste a quality difference from any other competitors in Loudoun county area. For example, the General Tso's chicken stands above all others for it's thin crispy breading and overall sauces smooth taste. Anything you order off the menu is delicious. Lastly the environment is very relaxing. The music choice is calming and the seating is very comfortable. This is an amazing restaurant and a perfectly fair price for all it has to offer it's guests.
