I'm not sure if my hibachi expectations have become too high, or if hibachi is now a lost art. This was a very mediocre hibachi experience. A lot of the NoVA hibachi spots aren't open for lunch on the weekends. We chose Sakura Grill because it was one of the few that were. We came for a Sunday lunch and it was nearly empty. Service was pleasant, but the hibachi chef did the bare minimum. We started with a couple appetizers - the crab rangoons, takoyaki, and an eel roll. All were satisfactory and brought out quickly, but noticeably absent from the takoyaki were the bonito flakes. I will commend the restaurant for being mindful of dietary restrictions. We had someone in our party who requested no onions in their hibachi, and the chef was able to accommodate without any issues. We also had someone who ordered the vegetable hibachi, and the staff asked whether that diner was a vegetarian and advised that the hibachi meals came with shrimp. Another plus was that they had a sink in the dining area to wash your hands. As for the hibachi presentation, the chef lit the grill on fire, spun the spatulas around at the intro, tossed the egg up and down a few times, did the onion volcano (though poorly executed), and attempted to throw a piece of zucchini into our mouths. There was an option for a sake shot from a squeeze bottle, but we all declined. The chef relied on a few gimmicks - a silly squirt bottle and a clucking rubber chicken. He didn't have a lot of showmanship or pizazz or any wow factor. The chef wasn't very engaging - he might as well have cooked the food in the back kitchen. This was my brother-in-law's first time at a hibachi restaurant, but the lack of razzle-dazzle in the cooking did not impress and left something to be desired. I ordered the filet mignon hibachi. Each hibachi meal comes with a small house salad and hibachi soup (mushroom based broth with fried onions). You can also swap out for the miso soup, if you like. The filet mignon was nice and tender. I could've done with more flavor, but I guess that's what the dipping sauces are for. One of my favorite things about going to a hibachi place is the fried rice. This fried rice was average, and the veggies were also average... everything was average. We were celebrating a birthday and the staff were kind enough to sing happy birthday twice - once from the hibachi chef with the onion volcano and once from the waitstaff with a festive drum and tambourine. I will credit the waitstaff for providing effective service, but the food and hibachi experience were pretty mid overall. read more

This was a fun place! They have two sections to eat in, so you can choose to sit at a regular table or have the hibachi experience. It was the first time my young kids had been to a hibachi, and they loved it. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful. They had it decorated beautifully. We were seated quickly and had our orders taken shortly after. The servers were friendly and entertaining. The food was delicious, reasonably priced with good sized portions. We got edamame and spring rolls for appetizers, which were yummy, and the chicken with vegetables, fried rice and noodles. Everything was great! I have a feeling we will be back again! read more

This place was meh. We've been here a couple of times and I think the ownership has changed. The service was subpar. The waitress came to check on us twice in the beginning and after our food arrived we never saw her again. It was not until 20 or 25minutes later that another waitress came by to check on us. Not sure what the hang up was as the restaurant was mostly empty. The side of noodles was weird. I was expecting asian flavors, but we got spaghetti dunked in soy sauce and covered with black pepper. This was also on the kids menu as well, my son could barely eat it due to how spicy it was. My other kid got a Ramen bowl and that was essentially the same noodles as above in a pool of chicken broth that tasted like it was dumped out of a box. It was very bad. Usually when we go to Noku in the Village, my kid devours the Ramen bowl, but this one was left untouched. The maki rolls were OK, but pricy and not worth their value. The rainbow roll, I believe, only had 4 pieces. Also, the pieces of fish on top of the rainbow were very small and underwhelming. The fact that it cost more than our usual sushi places added insult to injury. The Philli roll was more cream cheese than salmon. Finally, some minor issues that demonstrate that the staff doesnt really care: the waitress poured the beer so fast that it was 90%head, and she just moved on; and, when our sushi tray came out the wasabi and ginger were missing. In my 15+ years of eating sushi in all types of places, all over America i have never had a situation where the ginger and wasabi were left out. I had wanted to try Sakura for quite some time. After seeing the good reviews, we finally got here. Upon entering, there was no one at the host stand. Finally, we saw there was a bell on the stand. My husband rang it and a man who turned out to be our server, approached and seated us in a booth by a window. Before going, we had looked at the menu online which helped us to decide what to order. It did concern us that their prices looked to be high. When we saw the menu given to us at the restaurant, the prices were about $10 lower than what was listed on their website. I ordered the Deluxe Sakura Box which (supposedly) consists of: "3 pieces tuna sashimi, 3 pieces salmon sashimi, salmon avocado hand roll, house roll, seaweed salad, sushi rice, oshinko, pickled vegetables". My husband ordered Sushi and Sashimi Box which (supposedly) consists of: "3 pieces tuna sashimi, 3 pieces salmon sashimi, 4 pieces assorted sushi, shrimp tempura roll, sushi rice, oshinko, pickled vegetables". Each dinner comes with miso soup and a salad. The miso soup came to the table piping hot. It had good flavor. The salad had an unusual dressing that seemed to be mayonnaise based and was sweet. It wasn't bad, just different. To drink I had a glass of "Kinsen Original Plum Wine" which proved to have great taste---not even a hint of bitterness. Probably one of the best plum wines I've ever had. My husband had wanted a Kirin light beer but they only had the regular one which he was okay with. As for the main courses---we both thought the quality of the fish was excellent. I never had had a hand roll before and I did enjoy the salmon, sashimi and avocado together. And now the reason for 3 stars --- Later on when we went home, we looked at the menu again and noticed that my dish lacked both oshinko and pickled vegetables. My husband's lacked pickled vegetables. At least, I got to taste some of his oshinko. We both wished that the pickled vegetables were there as was promised by the menu. Despite the obvious missteps, we both say we would give them another chance now that we know what to look for. We've even discussed trying their hibachi meals Yes, Yelp, I know...I will talk about the ambience. I came here on a Friday night and wow the service was absolutely above and beyond, they constantly came and checked on you and asked if you needed anything so frequently! they were super nice and were patient! I got the mango tempura roll and the redskins roll and both were absolutely amazing! their seaweed salad and the mushroom soup were good too!! :) the ambiance in the place was good, it was very clean and i can tell whoever managers/operates it, does a very good job of its upkeep! i highly recommend this place and will def recommend people come here! read more

The hibachi chef, Bubba, was phenomenal and entertaining, sadly the sever was very inattentive. However the food and Bubba, are definitely worthy the price point and experience given. As a slight more I do wish they would let you know if you will be seated with other people. read more

My girlfriend and I have been here a bunch of times. I honestly can't say enough about it. It's a good hibachi spot. I typically get the filet and chicken hibachi since it's better quality steak and only $4 more than the regular. They gave us some free shrimp on this trip which was nice. My gf also got the filet and chicken hibachi. Everything was delicious as usual. The miso soup did seem to be microwaved this time because it was steaming but was lukewarm. Other than that though, it was all good. The service is part of the reason to come here. We've never had to do a reservation to sit at a hibachi table. We usually get seated at a grill pretty quickly. The chefs are always fun and interactive. On this visit I got to try some sake from the bottle and he tossed us vegetables off the spatula to catch in our mouths. And it's usually very quick service as well. Even on takeout orders we get our stuff pretty quickly. The ambiance is casual here. Half of the restaurant is traditional dining tables and booths. The other half is hibachi grills. I believe they have 8 grills here so there's plenty of seats even when it's busy. They have a parking lot out front and it's convenient. My son saw a video of one if his friends eating hibachi and asked if we could go so he could have food thrown into his mouth! I've been meaning to try this place as it's really close to our home. I am glad we decided to pull the trigger rather than go to benihanas. This place is really clean. The ambiance was great. The tables are a bit higher than normal so you have to sit up straight. The service was great. They were very attentive and got us everything we needed. We all decided to do hibachi. My kids shared a kid hibachi and we still had left overs. I've never seen them crush food the way they did until they were exposed to this place. They also enjoyed the show. I had the filet and chicken combo with fried rice. They start you off with a few shrimp while the chef cooks the rest of the protein and veggies. Everything was cooked to perfection. This place is a bit on the expensive side but generally hibachi is. Been years since we visited Sakura Grill in Ashburn due to Covid. We picked a bitterly cold night to visit thinking less people but when we arrived early evening jammed packed with customers and every table was packed. My wife's Birthday. We ordered lobster and chicken; chicken and shrimp; and lobster and steak. Appetizers now pretty much fixed except type of rice and no chicken livers (my favorite). Has 2 Kirins. Chefs as usual put on a show and we all ate until we could not anymore. No longer offer bamboo shoots ate the end. Good service and sis a birthday sing-a-long for my wife. Finally got around to trying the hibachi at Sakura. It does not disappoint. You get the traditional Teppanyaki experience here, you sit around a big flat cooktop and the whole show happens in front of your eyes. We were a group of 7 and all had the full experience of hibachi. The meal includes salad, clear soup, veggies, fried rice, 2 shrimp, and your protein of choice. Noodles are $3.50 extra but worth the money. A great tip is to ask for extra egg for the fried rice and add extra garlic to everything being prepared. It really elevates the flavor. I ordered the filet mignon and shrimp entree, my wife ordered the rib eye steak. The filet was nice and tender but my wife's ribeye was superior in flavor. All the food was prepared correctly, the steak was juicy and flavorful and seafood was nice and tender. This gentleman knew his businesses. We had kids with us and the chef was kind enough to give us a heads up when the pyrotechnics happened. It's this kind of courtesy that adds to the whole dining experience. read more

My FAVORITE hibachi grill and sushi place in the entire DMV. Close by the the IAD airport so it's a lovely place to bring your out of state guests after a long day of travel. I arrived at the restaurant at 9:20 PM. According to the information on Yelp and the signs posted on their door, they were supposed to close at 10:00 PM. I approached the host and requested to order some sushi and teriyaki chicken to go. He politely informed me that the grill had been shut down and that they actually close at 9:30 PM. He mentioned that the information on Yelp was outdated and inaccurate. I was disappointed to learn that even though they close at 9:30 PM, they were unwilling to serve me anything to go at 9:20 PM. I chose not to voice my frustration further because I don't feel comfortable eating food from a restaurant that seems eager to shut down service before their stated closing time, as it gives the impression that they want to leave early. read more

We have been to Sakura twice for special occasions and really enjoyed the experience and the food. The first time we went, we were going for just the novelty and fun but were pleasantly surprised that the food itself was outstanding. We did typical chicken, shrimp, steak, and scallop hibachi -- all outstanding. The fried rice is of course incredible as well. Service is fast and we have always been able to get a table - sometimes by ourself. Chefs are good and friendly. Ambiance is on point. Beautiful wood grain interior, clean dark floors, new fixtures. Went to Sakura Grill on New Year's Day. The food was pretty good, although I didn't think the seafood imperial sauce had much flavor, and the calamari in it had a pungent, funky taste. The teriyaki dishes were enjoyed, and the veggies were fresh. I liked my miso soup and the salad, but there was way too much dressing on it for my taste. The thing that got us all down was the lack of service. The waitress never came back to ask us how everything was, or to ask if we wanted a drink refill. We had to flag them down. One woman came by and asked my sister if she was done with her drink and reached out to take it, instead of asking her if she wanted a refill -- which she did. My husband asked for more water, and they brought him a can of beer, but that could have just been a language barrier. Gone are the days when the answer to every birthday celebration (or any celebration, for that matter) was dinner at Benihana. I mean, how do you argue with a live cooking demonstration, spontaneous fire, and generous portions of grilled meat and shrimp at one table with random strangers? Answer: you don't. While the hibachi grill (and Benihana) has lost its sheen in the last decade, it is still alive and kicking. And some - like Sakura Grill in Ashburn - have gotten it right. Sakura's menu is an impressive and slightly overwhelming list of Japanese staples. In the mood for sushi? They've got it. Hibachi? Done. Tempura? Uh huh. Ramen? Yep, they've got that too. I made reservations for dinner on a Saturday, oddly thinking hubby, me and little one would have an entire hibachi table to ourselves (I blame my warped sense of reality on my hermetic life). The restaurant is split at the center with the hibachi tables and all their excitement to the right of the front entrance; and a tranquil sushi bar and dark mahogany booths to the left. When we arrived earlier than expected and our seat at the hibachi table, I was a little relieved to be seated near the sushi bar, away from the family birthday gatherings on the hibachi side. We ordered crab wontons and teriyaki chicken satay to start, both yummy and well...what you would expect from crab wontons and teriyaki chicken satay. For the main event, hubby fixed his eyes on the Filet Mignon hibachi, a hefty plate of melt-in-your-mouth chunks of filet mignon, loads of grilled zucchinis and carrots, and 2 very large (and very random) shrimp. Again, nothing extraordinary but solidly good. My spicy tuna roll platter, on the other hand, was underwhelming. Beautifully wrapped but lacking in taste despite boasting of layers of spicy mayo, eel sauce, jalapeno, unagi and one perfect avocado in the center. The big surprise of the night was the chicken fried rice we ordered for our daughter. Fresh and packed with flavor, it was the ultimate comfort dish. All in all, not bad for a traditional hibachi grill. A decent meal served with a smile. And despite my unexciting sushi, I would absolutely return to give their sushi offerings another try. The restaurant is so nice inside. It has a warm and friendly appeal, much credited to the decorum. It gives off Japan vibes. We get take out from this place pretty often, so I figured it's time to write a review. While their phone etiquette needs a little help. In person, they're always pleasant and helpful. They answer their business phone with a stern "Hello," like your an agitating telemarketer!!! It's off-putting at first but pretty funny after the fact. It's so strange, and I always have to say "is this Sakura????" Anyways, the sushi is good and their crab rangoon is a fave!!! My family also enjoys the sushi, calamari, gyoza, and takoyaki as well!!! Hibachi here is ok. The sides that come with it are all pretty meh , not especially flavorful but ok: fried rice, vegetables, & soup. I personally have been enjoying the triple delight from the Asian fusion menu as a main course lately. My kids also really like the ramen and bentos occasionally. I got 6 sushi rolls and the octopus salad. The sushi was mediocre and I cannot pinpoint exactly why other than the rice. The rice was very soggy that it changed the texture of the sushi. The quality of the ingredients were not up to par either. It wasn't amazing, it was just ok. Also, they gave very little soy sauce for the amount of sushi. The octopus salad was not what I expected. Long time fan of this restaurant and, after a long day of work (and too tired to dine-in) I decided to order for delivery ... and then the delivery service backed out! I called Sakura to double-check and, sure enough, the third-party service who agreed to deliver my order cancelled (with no way to get my $9.95 delivery fee refunded). Anyway, Sakura staff to the rescue! They called back to say they were sending an employee over with my meal!
