I love being able to support a local business for my coffee fixes! As I prefer cold coffee, I usually order one of their frappes or a cold brew. I live the selection they have of sugar free syrups. Great food, great people, great service! We came to New Castle from Chicago to see the eclipse. We didn't have a solid plan for where to view the eclipse but we read the reviews for Cafe Royal and thought we'd stop here and pick up sandwiches, then we'd find a spot to look skyward. Under new ownership and that has really improved the customer service at Cafe Royal! I've been there a handful of times since, for meetings and lunch and have been greeted. They even sell their local beans too now! Making some improvements here and there - a work station area, new hours, open longer, and events. Lunches are great, I love the paninis and sides. I tried the new breakfast special this morning: bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit, potatoes, and coffee. It was fantastic, and it was fresh. And it was cheaper than going to those other places that serve the same. Café Royal is such a friendly place to visit, and the staff always treats you with kindness and courtesy. I like to come here to read and work on projects and the atmosphere is great for that. The new owner, Carl, has already changed the "vibe" of the place. As I was walking through the door, someone welcomed me! Wow! The staff were very cordial and conversational. It was very nice. The coffee is most likely from the same roasters as the coffee was about the same as it was before. I had a latte ~ my go to test for coffee shops (good black coffee is difficult to mess up for coffee shops.) Overall, the coffee experience is a 5. Good stuff. I've been visiting my Aunt that lives in New Castle quite often over the last 5-6 years. I'm not sure why but I never thought cafe royal had much to offer so I didn't try it. I'm not a coffee house kind guy and I thought the sandwiches and breakfast in particular might be lacking. I couldn't have been more wrong. Three of us finally went there recently and between us tried the grilled cheese, turkey sandwich and a breakfast bagel sandwich. The standout was the turkey sandwich and now we can't wait for our next visit. Definitely coming back for lunch sandwiches. The bacon and egg breakfast bagel was good but the egg is a little odd. Like maybe a premade egg patty the just gets heated up?? Reminded me of a subway breakfast sandwich. All of the bread and bagel seemed fresh like they bake it or have it baked for them. They have Cookies, muffins, croissants and probably more that I'm forgetting. We got some cookies to go and have on the plane ride home. They were delicious, just like homemade. We enjoyed our sandwiches. I ate my zantorian sandwich before realizing I should take a picture. It was different with red onion rather than the usual white onion on a beef and horseradish sandwich. My dad enjoyed the mac and cheese, and it was good but simple and nothing unique. I liked the potato salad but nothing extra special. The cream soda was delicious once mixed up and I would try other flavors for sure. We didn't have ice cream but I saw they sell Sundae's ice cream and it's amazing stuff we eat often in Indianapolis. Went to Cafe Royale for the first (and last) time today. The only thing that I thought would appeal to me was a tuna sandwich. When I got it it was the worst tuna sandwich I have ever had. There was something in it that I didn't recognize and I took it to the counter to tell them I couldn't eat it and I asked what was in it. The lady told me it was craisins. I have NEVER heard of putting craisins in tuna. She asked if I wanted anything else and I told her honestly that nothing else looked appetizing. She acted like she didn't want to refund my money and was very rude and said if I came back it wasn't guareenteed they would do that the next time. My husband said not to worry, because we wouldn't be back again. She then said that she couldn't believe how I was acting. All I had said was that I couldn't eat the sandwich. I was hiking around New Castle and looked to Yelp to find something tasty and local, so Cafe Royal was my first choice. The are located in a large building with signs for Cafe Royal and "The Market". They share a common entrance and parking lot with Cafe Royal being the restaurant and dining area, while the Market is still under development as a place to pick up local and artisan items from a series of shelves beyond the dining area. I placed my order at a counter on the left side of the entrance after perusing the numerous options on black and white board. There is a lot to choose from and daily specials. If you check in on Yelp before ordering, you get a discount on orders over $10! Although mostly known for their coffees, breakfast items, and even some desserts, I went with a Chicken Asiago Panini with a choice of side (potato salad for me) and a pickle for free! After paying, the staff gave me a numbered piece to set on my choice of table in the dining area so that they could bring my order out when ready. The dining area has a number of tables with four chairs each as well as a few "comfy" areas with overstuffed chairs, but not tables. A semi-private area to the right of the dining area can be reserved for larger groups. Since I arrived later in the lunch hour, my order went in after a number of carryout call-ins and several tables of orders for those in the dining room. So, there was a bit of a wait, but not too bad. This isn't fast food, so understand they don't have a bunch of sandwiches sitting around under food lamps....it takes time to make them. And the food was worth the wait! The panini was served sliced diagonally and had about a 1/3 cup serving of potato salad. The panini was delicious, with the focaccia bread adding a little crunch to each bite. The spice was well balanced with the chicken and cheese, reminding me almost of the flavor I've had from some Italian pasta dishes. The potato salad was chilled and had bright flavors including sweet pickle. Very tasty! The staff was efficient, but not overly outgoing and upbeat. When I ordered water for my meal, I was handed a smaller glass of ice water, but didn't see any place to refill it and the server who brought out my meal didn't ask if I wanted a refill. A small oversight, but it would have been appreciated. When done, guests are supposed to bus their own tables and stack the dishes on a shelf above an enclosed trash bin. On the weekday I went, business was steady, but not crowded. There seemed to be plenty of space to be seated. They do have a limited amount of outdoor seating, but the space overlooks the parking lot and if you choose it, you should let the staff know that you set up out there to avoid delays in being served. I do enjoy coffee in many different forms. Sometimes I like hot coffee, but most the time I enjoy iced coffee. This place is always busy in the morning and around lunchtime. I have gone here on a couple different occasions, and so far I personally have not been impressed with the coffee. Maybe is because I am used to a stronger coffee from a larger chain coffee store. One thing I have been very impressed with was the breakfast. I personally did not know. They actually offered breakfast food until recently. I was told that I needed to try their biscuits and gravy because I've had people tell me that they were the best in town. I have grown up on biscuits and gravy and I consider myself a biscuit and gravy aficionado. I have had this cousin gravy from many many different restaurant, as well as homemade. So, being the person I am, I had to give them a try to see for myself. I must say they are actually some of the best biscuits and gravy from a restaurant that I have had. There was only one other location that was better than this location, but it was in North Carolina, and has since close it's doors. Even though they do not surpass my grandmother's buttermilk biscuits and gravy, they are very very good. The one thing I do like the best about these are the actual buttermilk flavor. There is nothing like getting a hot, fluffy and slightly tangy biscuit from the buttermilk that is used. It surpasses any other biscuit that is made. The gravy itself was pretty good, but could use more salt and pepper, or another seasoning to increase its flavor profile. I have not had a chance to try any other lunch options, but they do have an assortment of sandwiches to choose from. As far as recommendations, I feel like this location is a must try for someone who thoroughly enjoys biscuits and gravy as much as I do. If you are a coffee drinker, give it a try you may enjoy it. read more

I was giving a concert in New Castle, and we decided on a whim to stop in here for dinner. Definitely a "casual" type of place, you order at a counter and they fix the food for you, so it's fresh. I had a roast beef wrap and it was very tasty! It might not quite reach the stellar stage, but well above average. The potato salad WAS stellar, heck, I am tempted to drive back to New Castle just for that. If you're a potato salad fan, I hope you like it as much as I do. When I'm in New Castle I love to take a moment to treat myself and go down and to have some good Cafe Royale. They are my second favorite place to get my caramel frappes. And if I'm really feeling good there's cinnamon muffins warmed up are so delicious. My daughter loves their gelato that they have and she's equally loves the setting they have in their new place. The women that work there are always just a ray of sunshine and they have made my experiences especially nice throughout the years. Besides the drinks and sweets I also recommended the breakfast menu me and a friend stopped in for brunch one day and had the chicken salad sandwiches and paninis and we was not disappointed with either one. I got into town a bit early for a friend's wedding (and the rehearsal picnic) , and wasn't sure what I would do to kill some time. Fortunately, a search on the iPhone for "coffee" turned this place up (as well as Starbucks, which would have been my last resort). Cute little house on what appears to be the main drag in town, and easy to miss. Walked in, and was surprised with how new the place appeared, with a 20+ foot serving area with two small refrigerated displays, a daily specials menu, etc. The seating area to the left consisted of 9 small tables (2-4 tops), and there was a father/son playing Connect Four when I walked in. There's some couches and things in the back for more relaxed seating. Ordered a green tea (unfortunately, just Tazo teas, but still nice.) The two behind the register, an older man and woman, appeared to be the owners and were super friendly while serving the two women in front of me, answering all their questions, and were supe-helpful when I asked about wireless. I'm not sure why they've decided to password-protect their wireless, but after I went to the car and got my laptop, the gentleman asked me about two minutes later if I had any problem accessing the wireless. A genuine inquiry, and obviously trying to make sure all my need were met. Generally, I find the food to be too sweet. It would be awesome if cole slaw was a side option. The service is very slow and I think they are only working on one order at a time. They are slow to greet when you walk in the door and they seem to be adaquately staffed. I go there fairly often because they are the healthiest lunch option in New Castle, but I'd like to see a few changes, and then I would go much more often. At Cafe Royale I don't feel like a customer. It's a gathering place. The food is made fresh & simply. It's good. The coffee is good. But the atmosphere is what makes this cafe stand out. Unlike most restaurants, which are built to serve you and move customers out the door, Cafe Royale invites you to stay. My wife complains that most restaurants are cold & is ready to leave as soon as possible. Cafe Royale is comfortable. Games and books invite you to stay longer. There are outlets on the walls & free wifi, so I have worked from my computer in the afternoons. At Cafe Royale I don't feel like a customer. I found this place on accident, I saw their sign (though barely, it's kind of hard to spot) and turned in because it promised coffee. I was a bit hungry too and wound up getting a panini sandwich with my Latte. The Latte was pretty good. It took a little longer than a Starbucks but it was worth the wait. My Panini was fantastic, I can't recall the name right now but it had Chicken & Pesto and was very tasty. They've got vegetarian options as well, which is important to me as my wife is vegetarian (I'm still a dirty omnivore myself). The service was good, the couple who ran the store were very attentive (even though I had to ask what the Wi-Fi password was they gave it to me with no problem. A few years ago I was visiting for Christmas and held a small concert here. They let me play for 2 hours. Friends, family, and former teachers came out. There was no actual music setup, but it worked out OK. Just tried to play and sing loud enough. Everyone had a good time and seemed to enjoy the food and drinks. I had never been there before this last month and didn't see a menu so I asked what was in one or two of the panini so I knew what one I wanted, and it seemed like I was being too troublesome. Really bummed. My husband and I have tried this place more than once in hopes that it had been an off day for the cafe, but sadly both times the drinks were un-drinkable. The coffee drinks had a weird taste, maybe from bad water? Bad quality coffee? The expresso drink was no better & the iced green tea tasted as if it came from a crystal light packet. We really wanted this to be a regular spot for our family, since even the nearest Starbucks is half an hour away, and we would rather support locally owned small businesses anyway, but I just can't bring myself to pay for such poor quality.
