Extremely pretentious and snotty for 0 reason. The food is subpar at best, it's not as cool as they like to think they are. They sat me and my girlfriends in what they called a table but was really a coat closet they threw a table in. When we asked to eat outside they were rude and did not want us to bc they were "fully booked" but it was entirely empty. They finally let us squeeze into sitting at one table where we had terrible over priced food. We've been here for drinks before pre-pandemic and thought it was a fun place. Came for dinner tonight with a reservation, booked many days in advance when the website indicated plenty of availability, but were sat outside. Fine, they were busy, but we didn't appreciate the host condescendingly exaggerating that the inside tables were booked "months in advance" as an explanation. We had cocktails and an appetizer and then ordered fondue for the meal. We waited a very long time for the fondue, and when it came, it was extremely disappointing. The cheese was very watery and thin and extremely salty. They served it with a basket of nearly stale bread and assorted vegetables and fruit, which including boiled potatoes that were almost completely cold. It was a disappointing meal, but after our check was delivered and our server acknowledged that we were ready to pay, we waited another half hour before they came back to settle our bill. At some point during this period, we went inside to check about paying and were rudely turned away by the host. Eventually she came out and charged our card. As we were getting up to leave and gathering our things, at one point the host tapped me on the shoulder, held the curtain open and gestured for me to exit, as if we weren't leaving fast enough. Food was really good. That alone would have made this a 4-5 star review. We had a great brunch that really hit the spot on a cold, rainy miserable day. However, the staff seemed to be a lot more concerned with hanging out, flirting with each other and watching cell phone videos than actually being attentive to their customers. Had walked by it many times when heading to La Esquina/Southside and never realized about its existence till I came by during the day. We wanted to have an afternoon bite (which ended being dinner) and the place seemed friendly. We had a bottle of their rose (only one in the menu) and was surprisingly good. As for food we had: - Mussels & Fries: really great, the portion is on the smaller end, but perfect for one person as a main or share as app - Lobster Club Sandwich: get this! Comes with avocado, bacon and a small green salad or fires. Overall nice little spot. Lots of Swiss and European influence in its dishes. Look around and you will see signs in German/Swiss around too. Pretty cool to sit by the bar/next to the window and do some people watching (hey, people around Soho are very stylish and I could definitely steal some of those outfit ideas). Big pro: They serve food all day. Changes menus from breakfast, lunch, afternoon, dinner to late night. The back room is so much fun and the front of house is always popping off (even on a Thursday night) Mia was a delightful and beautiful hostess that offered bright energy. I work in the industry and I know how hard it can be to maintain a genuine smile, but the staff manage to bring good vibes and better drinks. Bad service to start with. The online menu doesn't open, so you're instructed to hit unsafe webpages. The limited menu doesn't have an option like, let's say, grilled salmon. When inquired if there were any specials, the not friendly waiter seemed puzzled about the question. "What kind of special are you looking for?" So, this place is a no and i have to get out of there. My husband and I stopped here as we were on our way back to our hotel. We got here around midnight on a Saturday. The place was busy, but has a few seats open at the bar. The crowd is mostly hipster 20 somethings, but did have a few 40 somethings as well. The menu has about 10 specialty cocktails in addition to its full service bar and food menu. The we're still serving food when we were there. I ordered the rum punch and my husband ordered a whiskey. The bar tender was very nice and easy going. My rum punch was ok, not great. I expect higher quality ingredients when I order an expensive cocktail. But other than that, I liked the place a lot. The bar tender was so great. He was attentive, but not overbearing. He never rushed us for payment. Overall, I would go back here again. I'd probably get a vodka coke though instead next time. read more

My first time ever walking around in the Soho, Tribeca area. I had already finished walking around and looking at all the shops, and I had built up quite an appetite. I had about an hour and a half before I had to head back to my hotel and go to work. All of a sudden there were tons of restaurant options and I didn't know what to pick. I usually go with whatever environment looks the most fun. I really enjoyed the way Café Select was set up. There was a really cute outdoor seating area, and it was just warm enough to be able to get away with sitting outside that day. Also, the inside looked really cool. About half of the place was still drinking coffee and the other half had already moved on to cocktails. I was a fan of either. When I approached the host stand, I wasn't greeted as warmly as I would've liked. It was a very robotic sort of "Hi, how are you? Let me take you to your seat." With really no eye contact or personal interaction at all. That kind of killed my buzz on the place right away. I started thinking and becoming self conscious. Is it because I'm alone and he doesn't think that I'll have a high bill? I will prove him wrong! Right away, I ordered an appetizer meal, and a coffee! I also added avocado so I was pretty much within my $50 a day budget in one sitting. My server was kind, but also wasn't much into conversation. It's too bad because if the service was better, all-around, I would've really enjoyed this place and wanted to go back. They charged me $100 and said they couldn't cancel my reservation because ELEVEN people have called to say they had covid and didn't want to eat indoors and they were going to have "an empty dining room." I ordered Anthos' Fizz, a gin concoction consisting of raw egg white, rosemary and citrus. It was as tasty as it was aureate. I opted for the burger on this occasion sans the fries (the place offers only chips anyway), but I wish I had the polenta with poached eggs as I did previously. My companion ordered the Quinoa Salad: sweet peppers, grape tomatos, avocado with lemon-thyme dressing on the side and had devoured it post-haste. All hearsay, but it was rumored to be quite tasty. While perfectly edible, you do not come to Café Select for the food. You go there to hang out, to become the expatriate you had always wanted, to lose touch with the soil. Broadway is buzzing with the first real summer sweat and peepers hidden behind knock-offs of this and that. Just off the main drag and entirely inviting is Cafe Select. The waitstaff is slender and pulled from a billboard around the corner, but the Swiss charm extends itself well beyond any pretense. Cafe Select has gingham napkins, an ample bakery case and a charming display of free samples on Lafayette, each with a tiny Swiss flag. The neutrality of it all carries over to the clientele. Hipsters, obviously, but men in suits, women with plump, but all young and all savoring some unique flavors. So, schnitzel. What's not to love. And this chicken schnitzel sandwich two of us ordered was served on an airy, pocketed French bread with a tangy, creamy yellow mustard and arugula greens. Warm and melty chicken and cool lettuce are always a wonderful combination, especially when paired with a refreshing dose of fiber, lightly dressed with sweet, squirty cherry tomatoes. A prosciutto and provolone sandwich and a croque monsieur (made madame with the addition of a fried egg), were also disposed of happily, in ample portions too, as none of us were wanton for more. . . except dessert followed as you might expect. Our sandwiches paved the way for two charming desserts. House made cherry pie, which lent itself more to a turnover than our American version, and. . . yes. . . Toblerone Mousse. Perfect triangles, standing upright, sat in a pool of crunchy caramel sauce, an elegant monument to the famous candy bar. Yum, and yum and more yum. Places that double as cafes, bars, and restaurants always intrigue me so it was no wonder that I was drawn here everyday on my lunch breaks from Soho retail hell back in the day. But other than getting a coffee to go, I never really stopped in until last week. I have mixed feelings about my experience... Lets start with the good. It is beautiful inside. In the evening, the shimmering lights, over happy and sensual foreign chatter, make you feel good. The waitress was attentive but not at all overbearing, and the drinks were good. So that much was a success. What bothered me was how my time here began. I arrived at 6:30pm and wasn't quite sure yet if I wanted dinner, coffee, or just drinks. Since it was pretty early, I told the host I would like the coffee menu. Before I could even go on, he passive aggressively went on a rant about how at 7:30, they don't seat for coffee anymore because of all the dinner reservations and how he'll make "an exception" this time. That left a sour taste in my mouth for a few reasons. First, it was still an hour until dinner...I had plenty of time. Second, there were still PLENTY of seats available. And third, I was more than willing to order dinner or drinks too, which ultimately is what I ended up doing. Note to establishments. You might want to hire welcoming and friendly hosts. I keep reading that the food here leaves something to be desired so I'm glad I didn't even try it. It would have left me with an even more sour feeling about it and I really want to like this place. Saturday brunch plans were quickly halted when we arrived to Jack's Wife Freda (that did not take reservations) and had a 30 minute wait. I had read great things about this place online, but I could not allow my life to become a Portlandia skit, and seeing that the restaurant was extremely small and cramped with patrons sitting shoulder to shoulder, we opted to look elsewhere and found Café Select on the same block in this Nolita neighborhood. Much quieter, roomier and relaxed with a European vibe. Described as a casual Swiss spot with European rail-station-restaurant vibe whatever that is suppose to mean. I almost expected the servers to be dressed in all black with turtlenecks and as I ordered they quickly retort "Your story has grown tiresome" in true Dieter fashion. That did not happen, but my iced coffee was terrible and remained untouched other than the few sips we all shared to confirm my initial horror. At least the other coffees ordered did not share the same misgivings. The food more than made up for the coffee misstep. I had a generous portion of delicious avocado toast and a quinona chia seed bowl with fresh coconut, mango with some other mixed nuts and berries. It was so good I paid close attention to it so I could try to recreate it at home. I would recommend this place to anyone that doesn't believe in standing on the sidewalk waiting for a table to eat eggs. read more

Wanted to come here for breakfast and I checked their hours before going and it said they open at 9am at weekends and I got there at 10:30 and the hostess couldn't "remember" what time they opened so she asked the busboy what time they opened and he said 11am. Came here on New Year's Day and it was super packed. My friend and I got seated by the front, but we didn't mind. The tables were pretty close together so it felt tight at times but we all fit. I ordered the lobster bacon club sandwich with chips while my friend got a quinoa salad and pineapple juice. She really enjoyed her dish and the pineapple juice was fresh. We went there for my friend's birthday dinner - she wanted to have fondue. We sat there and loud music was blasting, everyone was shouting to each other - it was a very discouraging start. Then I don't know what we did to deserve this but all servers completely ignored us. A waitress came over to set up the empty table next to us and I politely asked to place an order. She said she will be right back, but never did. I asked another serving staff to take our orders and he said he will send someone. Another 10 minutes went by and finally we decided to leave. When we got up a guy came over and asked if everything is okay and I said it is not. Cheese Tartlet appetizer was delicious (although it is listed as Tartlets but you only get one... so really Tartlet), beef consomme was mild and just what I wanted. For entrees, the Zurich Veal was underwhelming and forgettable. The Lamb Loin was cooked perfectly but we did not enjoy the cranberry beans on the side. The Haricots Verts Amandine are amazing. For desert we tried to have the carrot cake which was, honestly, disgusting. Our waitress kindly replaced it with the bread pudding which was delicious and along with the Haricots Verts... the highlights. Drank the half litre Pinot Gamay which was uninspiring.
