Lovely dining experience. The food was excellent. Our group enjoyed the portabella mushroom soup, lobster bisque, beet salad, hogfish, and yellowtail. Everyone was pleased with their choices. We were seated in the covered courtyard area which was very comfortable. The service was ok. What was unfortunate is that the prices on this site and on the restaurant's website are outdated. The service was generally great, except the one Asian usher lady gave me a weird look even with my reservation, and tried to put me in the corner of the inside dining space when there were plenty of good spots on the nicer patio space. I don't like her. My server Jason was great though, made good recommendation and very attentive. If you are looking for good cuisine, and not just a fancy looking place on Duval Street, this is the place to be. An elderly couple sitting two tables away who owns home at Key West visits this restaurant very often and ranked Cafe Sole number one among all. This is by far my most favorite for a romantic dinner in the keys! It's a hidden gem that not too many people may know about but is it ever a great spot. My boyfriend and I went here for dinner. Such a cute upscale spot. We started out with a bottle of the JJ Christopher Pinot noir and the cheese plate that was perfect....we places they don't let the cheese sit out long enough before serving but not here, it was perfect. We had the hogfish and the lobster that was butterflied open stuffed with crabmeat. Everything was delicious and we will surely be a stop in the future. read more

Sometimes I wonder why a restaurateur puts an item on his menu he doesn't want you to order. If you make the hogfish super amazingly and you know it but you have no idea how to grill a lobster tail, then don't charge $50 for it to keep people away--just don't serve it. This is the story of two restaurants. The server (and menu) steered us toward certain items like the whole, fried artichoke, the excellent lobster bisque, and the specialty of the house (the hogfish entree) and those were well-executed. The lobster tail was a bizarrely mispriced and terribly executed broomstick through the front spokes of the bike in an otherwise well executed meal. The wine list is great and reasonably priced. Service was attentive and friendly. I have no one to blame but myself for not sending the lobster back--it was tough, embarrassingly overcooked, and flavorless. The Lima beans and rice were bland and uninspired so it was a disaster of a meal for me but quite nice for my girlfriend. The hogfish, artichoke, and lobster bisque were good. If I had it all to do over again, I'd let the server point me at what he or she knows is done well by the restaurant and avoid all the other options. read more

A very average 'institution' in Key West and trading on it's past glory. We've heard a lot about it and booked. We were seriously underwhelmed. Many regulars who come year after year, as the folks next to us told us. We hadn't asked but conversation was easy as the tables are close so they decided to chat....in fact the tables are a little too close, so being nosy I had a great time listening to a conversation about medical issues on one side (amazing where a scalpel can go!) and one about plans for tomorrow after a night of copulation....different....however it did have a certain weird charm! The outside but inside under a plastic roof also added to the atmosphere, with plants growing over and around you. The special hogfish was good, but the vegetables served with it (rice and potato....why????) were luke warm, overcooked and so 1980's. The dish had obviously been plated up prior to the fish being ready...whilst it wasn't cold it was not piping hot, and for an established restaurant it shows lack of care. The waiter was simply doing his job, and it showed...wanted us to order, forgot to bring things and generally seemed bored...and yes they do include a tip on the bill in a very European way. I do not object to that as I hail from the UK and feel US waiters are paid appallingly by a system that should be banned....charge a realistic price for the food and PAY the staff a living wage..... BUT for god's sake don't leave the credit card slip open cos' you really didn't deserve 18% let alone some more on top! In summary, a tired restaurant trading on the past and charging top dollar...and it appears continuing to do well, which seems a shame as we discovered some real gems in Key West and this was not one of them. Once a year we vacation in Key West and each year I look forward to the Hogfish at Cafe Sole. It is by far one of the most delicious meals I've ever had. The fish is a light white fish lightly pan seared in butter and seasoned to perfection. It sits in a pool of roasted red pepper zabaglione that is to die for. Other wonderful dishes include the Portobello soup and the fresh hearts of palm salad. Cafe Sole is off the beaten path, but is well worth seeking out. We held a group dinner here for our wedding party. The service was outstanding and everyone licked their plates. A must visit for any Key West trip! read more

The atmosphere and staff were pleasant but the food menu on the internet was completely different than what was offered. Beef carpaccio, home made Foie gras, and surf and turf not on the menu, very disappointed but we tried it anyway... I had the steak Diane, the béarnaise cream sauce was bland, tarragon would have gone a long way. I asked for a lobster tail on the side, and they charged me $42 for the lobster tail as a dinner w no accompaniments. Key West is a regular port for my ship and this is a must visit for every time I'm there. Café Solé is hands down the best restaurant in Key West. The seating is comfortable and romantic, on a good warm night get a seat out on the covered porch at one of the small candle-lit tables. You cannot go wrong on the menu choices, I've had almost everything there on the menu and all of it has been excellent. First timers, especially if you want the real Key West experience, start with the Conch Carpaccio, its delicate and citrusy and will really surprise you The beet napoleon with goat cheese is an absolute must for me every visit, I've been in love with beets since then. Entree if you love fish/seafood, please please PLEASE try the Hogfish (Hog Snapper), its so buttery and delicate and I promise you it will be the best fish you have ever tasted. Do not skip dessert! For those that can't decide try the Quatro or Trio a small sampling of all their desserts on one plate! And the chocolate pecan pie is delicious! Despite what the menu says online, there aren't really vegetarian options (it's basically just sides and a plain veggie pasta). However, the hogfish was incredible, so delicate and flaky and perfectly cooked. The grouper was okay, seemed a lot drier, but in a town with so many restaurants serving grouper, this dish didn't stand out. Highly recommend the hogfish over anything else. Finding places that offer vegetarian meals is few and far between especially in Key West, but when I found out this place had an entire vegetarian menu (for my friend) we decided to come here. The interior is lovely, it seems like you're about to be served a quality 5-star dinner. The usher saw me and my group walk into the establishment and stayed quiet and when we told another man we had reservations, she followed in behind us. Had we not said we had reservations, she wouldn't have come in to speak to us. We weren't asked if we'd like inside or outside seating and we were placed outside. Luckily, it was a cool night. I got the rack of lamb. The lamb itself was alright, but who serves carrot strips and Lima beans? Every entree my friends got had those exact sides. Definitely overpriced for the food they give you. Tiny portions that aren't that filling and the sides don't pair well with the entrees. I was not impressed with this place and I don't think I'll be back. read more

Had a great time here last night and would love to give it five stars but I can't. The reason the Cafe Sole is only fours stars is because the drink list is only beer and wine and the beer list was not very extensive - bummer. The second disappointing thing was that the Caesar salad was $18 and boring as hell. I mean I don't expect the CS to be exciting but for $18 it just felt like a ripoff. The good... everything else! The waiter was attentive, friendly and had great recommendations on food (he didn't make the salad recommendation lol). My wife and I each got the Hog Fish and it was probably one of the best meals I've ever had - I wish I had taken a picture. The plate was so well balanced and everything was INCREDIBLE! The ambience in the place was quaint and felt very Key West, it was also off the beaten path which we really liked. I'd recommend going here for sure. read more

My wife and I have been to Cafe Sole on numerous occasions in the past We organized a dining visit this past Tuesday with 6 of our friends. The restaurant has changed. I would guess it had changed hands but do not know that factually. What we experience we know factually. Service was poor. We didn't eat for TWO HOURS AFTER ARRIVAL. Not acceptable. Food quality level was abysmal. For example the Fois Gras was served frozen. It was returned. It came back to us defrosted in a microwave I surmise. Even though served at no charge it was still inedible. Many more examples. In any case, Cafe Sole was on our short list of restaurants to visit when in Key West. They are no longer on that list. There are too many far superior restaurants in the wonderful Key West. read more
