Funky restaurant with tasty food. We had to sit outside in the back patio bc we had our dog. There were so many flies out there that it was kinda gross. Would definitely opt for indoor seating next time. We even had our waitress turn on the overhead fan to see if that would dispel the flies, but they were not deterred. The trash bins are nearby and it. The parking lot is fairly tiny, so be forewarned. We have tried their Lexington location, but def prefer this one if we are nearby. read more

This is a great neighborhood cafe/bar. Always have a good experience. Thier bloody mary's are pretty much on point. Food is always delicious. I'm conflicted because I love the atmosphere, the friendly waitstaff, the homey concept of going to pour my own cup of coffee and hoping my "Happy Birthday" mug isn't in use by someone else. It's like having breakfast in my kitchen, but paying for it. Then again, like having breakfast in my own kitchen, there are some mishaps - and have been every single time we've been there. To be honest, it's only because there aren't a whole bunch of other breakfast options here in Columbia and so we are semi-forced to return just to break up routine. The first time we went, I ordered the "avocado omelet" special and my boyfriend ordered the special peach french toast. The "special" omelet contained normal omelet fillings, with two thick slices of avocado.. BOR-ING. And for $11?!?! The peaches were sold out after he ordered them, then they were there, and they were good - worth every cent of his $8(*!?!?) bill. Whaaaaaa? The second time I went there, they ran out of strudel - AFTER we had already ordered it to go at the beginning of our meal (as in, they said they would box some up for us to take home, then sold it all anyway - FAIL!). Not learning my lesson, the third time we went there (a charm, right?! Wrong.) I ordered the special, with avocado, again - but this time it wasn't an omelet so I thought, no way could they mess this up. The "avocoado" advertised on the A-frame out front was mysteriously absent. When I inquired as to the whereabouts of said avocado I was greeted first with the visage of a clueless server then with the explanation that it was never intended to be avocado at all, but rather a paste or spread made of avocados and other ingredients. Uhh... what?! So not only did they not provide what was on their special menu, but it wasn't even what was ON the menu.. In short - we gave you enough chances and that's a 1, 2, 3 strike out. I have lived in South Carolina for 3 weeks. This is the only place I have been to more than once. I had the special the first time and it was amazing. Today I had braised pork and it was the best thing I have ever tasted. I love going there for food or for drinks. The mimosas are delicious, and the pomegranate mimosa was a nice variation on one of my favorites. The bacon bloody Mary was amazing too! I have heard so many great things about Cafe strudel and have been disappointed every time I've eaten there. No matter what time of day it is it's always packed, which I don't understand because the food isn't good. We've tried the duck-fat fries and the hangover hash that everyone raves about and both were honestly unappealing and gross. I have not had any food that was above mediocre from here. Redeeming qualities are the coffee bar and the back patio which is dog friendly. My recommendation is skip this place all together and walk a block to 116 down the street. AFRAID OF A LITTLE SALT AND PEPPER? I spent a great deal of time looking for a decent breakfast option just outside of Columbia, where we were staying. I decided that we would probably have better luck if we just headed downtown and I was right. Yelp pointed us in the direction of Cafe Strudel and it was very busy this morning. We did not mind the wait because it gave us time to chat with other visitors. When our table was ready, we received a page and were promptly seated. I ordered the cheese omelet with fresh spinach and turkey sausage, with wheat toast and hash browns. My husband decided on the Congaree green salad with two scoops of curried chicken salad area. My food largely came unseasoned which while understandable is not exactly what I expected. I like my ingredients incorporated into my omelet but the omelet was prepared separately and the ingredients folded into the center. This made the omelet difficult to eat because the ingredients would tend to fall out if not careful. Also, I prefer a softer cook on my eggs. The potatoes would have been the star of the show had they been seasoned because they were on point in every other way, natural skin on potatoes cooked until super crisp and not greasy). My husband enjoyed his salad but just wished for more of the spring greens to accommodate the generous serving of chicken salad. I would definitely return to try something different as the vibe here was very dynamic and we loved this old building that remains largely untouched right down to the metal ceiling tiles and exposed brick. I always enjoy eating here. It gets a little crowded at lunch but I understand why, it's good! I enjoyed the portobello mushroom sandwich and house made tomato basil soup. Both delicious. What can I say about Cafe Strudel that hasn't been said before? Basically, it's one of Columbia's best restaurants. I would definitely take out-of-town guests there. Its old location was even more so, but the new location a little down State St. is also hipster-to-the-max - and I love that. I've been here for brunch, lunch, and dinner. For brunch I obviously get the breakfast quesadilla and a bloody mary. As you will see by the line out of the door, all of Columbia comes here for brunch. For lunch/dinner, I normally get the steak salad with the toasted sesame dressing. Yall, it's a sizable portion and extremely tasty. The wait staff is always super down-to-earth, which I appreciate. So on a Saturday Morning the boy and I decided to venture out for a nice breakfast. We journeyed over to West Columbia and ended up at Cafe Strudel. We were excepted into a vividly colorful, at home diner. This place is eclectic. The design is easy going and the wait staff are all sweethearts. Now to the food. I ordered the Coffee Bar and of course was drawn to the stickey bun coffee. The coffee was good. It was a self service bar so you could enjoy as many cups of coffee you wanted. The coffee cups were just souvenir cups that you pick up from random places, which I thought was a cute idea. The boy ordered orange juice as he is not a coffee drinker. It came in a small cup and it wasn't pulp free so he didn't like it. I ordered the Hangover Hashbrowns (small) with one single pancake. The hashbrowns consisted of one scrambled egg, cheddar cheese, onions, tomatoes, and banana peppers. My order was excellent all of the ingridients blended prefectly together. The boy ordered the Cinnamon Pancakes with sausage and scrambled eggs with cheese. He stated it was good, he liked his eggs and his pancakes were fluffy and not too sweet. We will be going again because the food wasn't expensive and I liked the atmosphere of this place. I also want to try lunch and dinner from this place. So until than I'm a fan. read more

This place had a small selection, but everything looked great. I got the hangover hash browns and he got a bagel sandwich. Both were beyond expectations! I came to Columbia to visit my mom in the hospital and on the way decided to stop and get some breakfast with my family. This place was amazing. The waitress was always coming back to ask and make sure everything was okay at the table which is amazing. I'm glad I took the time to try something new out. The food was great I got the sunrise burrito with bacon and I loved it. I went here with 4 people (2 adults, 2 children) both adults getting burritos and children getting French toast and it was under $25, you just can't beat that especially with the quality of food. First of all, I really enjoyed the character of the restaurant. It reminded me of a more northern or European vibe. The view from the second floor window showed a nice take of the Columbia skyline, minus one pesky billboard. The burger I had was wonderful, so much better than anything you would get at a fast food burger joint. The hash browns weren't as great as the burger, but weren't particularly bad either. Recently moved to their new location down the street, at 300 State St. I don't know what their old location was like, so I can't compare, but the new place is a large space -- comfortable, and open. I can only imagine they'll be doing more work with it, since it looks sparse at this point. The coffee bar, as people wrote about, is more of a novelty than a reason to come here, but hey, for some, the novelty is all that's necessary. I ordered the "World Famous" Hangover hash browns. I mean, if you're going to propagate a dish as "World Famous," you've got to be prepared to deliver. If that dish was world famous, then it must have been tallied within a pretty small world -- perhaps within a circle of hungover college students. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. There was a random slice of orange and pineapple on my dish, so maybe a C for effort in the aesthetics and the nutritionally minded. The service, however, was fantastic. As I was waking in the back of the restaurant where parking is the owner of the restaurant gets the door for me and strikes up a friendly conversation with me. I didn't know he was the manager, I just thought he was a friendly patron of the restaurant. You really don't find that kind of service anymore. I sat at the bar and was served by cute and equally friendly bartender. She was attentive to my demolishing tea after tea and never left me asking for a refill. I ordered the hangover hashbrown meal and it was super filling and delicious. I pass through Columbia a few times every couple months and now I have found a new restaurant when I'm in town. Was just there before a show at New Brooklyn Tavern for dinner. Don't waste your time. Salad was pathetic. Overpriced for the overcooked buffalo chicken salad that I got. The frozen "duck fat" fries were a flop at the table as well. I've talked to about 5 people lately that have agreed with tmy opinion. The good may have been the cocktails....Everyone was pleased with those and a good beer list. Just wish the food could keep up its end of the bargain. Breakfast on the other hand is excellent. Their grits and omelette that I had a few months ago may have been my favorite in the city. Hashbrowns needed some help as they are soggy but the grits are out of this world good. Came here for a pre-wedding Saturday brunch and was so disappointed! Our food took an hour to get. Everyone in our party got their food different times. Because we had to be somewhere for our hair and make up, some of our parties left before we even got our food or their food. This was my first time in Cafe Strudel, and it was the bomb! It is very busy and people are waiting to get in. The trick is to call at 9:30 am to give them your name, they don't open until 10:00 am. When you arrive, check in and when 10:00 rolls around the wait staff is ready with menus in hand and calling your party's name and escorting you to your table, very efficient. Our server was Lena, she is GREAT. She has a warm smile, strikes up a friendly conversation with the table and every so efficient in getting the delicious food to your table. A great little cafe with great food, a laid-back atmosphere, and friendly staff. I enjoy stopping in to chat with friends over coffee or just hang out and read taking a break every now and then to check out the cool local art on the walls. Summertime at the cafe is wonderful with the live music on the weekends out on the patio. The patio is also a great place to be in the spring and summer for brunch on the weekend. Yes yes yes! So affordable and delicious! I came on a Saturday for brunch and got the hangover hash browns. They were very good but it's definitely hangover food and i wasn't hungover, wished I had gotten a salad because they looked amazing. The hash browns were good just a little too heavy for me. I also had a Bloody Mary. Now they have several types but I got the ultimate bacon infused and garnished Bloody Mary (don't remember the exact name) and it was only $6!! I was shocked it was that cheap for that type of drink. I highly recommend it! My boyfriend utilized the lovely coffee bar (they had cinnamon bun coffee, yum!) and to eat he had the breakfast burger and he destroyed it and said it was amazing. A nice brunch location on the weekend. My only gripe with this place is that it's outgrown it's space and on the weekends it is crowded to the point that it's a 45-60 minute wait for a table.
