My father and I ate here on a weekday afternoon for lunch. We were immediately met by the bartender in the front room, who asked if we wanted bar or restaurant seating. We opted for a the bar with TV's for lunch. The bar area is nicely decorated in a fun, bar like vibe. Our bartender/server was Nick. Nick was very knowledgeable of the drink menu, food menu, and the specials going on that day. I opted for the smoked par wings, dressed in buffalo. The wings had the delicious Smokey taste you'd expect from smoked wings, but Cafe Telegraph took it to the next step by then frying them to give the wings an extra crunch! My wings were delicious! My dad got the special of the day, a half chicken, smoked, and then fried to crispen the skin and a side of fries. The chicken was juicy and delicious, and the fries had a great crisp to them as well. The place was not very busy on a weekday for lunch, but service was top notch and the food was great! When on the road, we prefer one-of-a-kind local places to chains, and this quirky but fun spot a stone's throw from Jefferson Barracks was a serendipitous find. The restaurant happily accommodated us on short notice, escorting our large group to a dining room that doubles as a private party room. Impressively, most of the building's construction materials and rustic décor were recycled from buildings destroyed in tornadoes, floods, etc. A large smoker parked just outside the kitchen door hinted at the barbecue specialties featured on the multi-page menu. They're far from typical; some have a Tex-Mex or Italian twist while others are just ... different. Apart from goofy names like "Fred Flintstone Pork Steak" and "The Rocky Italian Stallion," most dishes are named for local places and people. Spirited servers were eager to answer our many questions. What, for example, are "Gringo Cheese" and "Tishie Tail-Twister Sauce?" The former is a fondue-like blend of melted cheese (Chihuahua?) and mild seasonings, and the latter is a hot red chili sauce. The place was very busy and it took quite a while to get our food. Familiar or not, everything arrived in giant portions on oval silver platters and looked and tasted phenomenal. Flavors are closer to bold than subtle. My Missus had the "Oakville (a St. Louis suburb) Smoked Par Fried Fish" sandwich. Bedded on a toasted hoagie roll, the thick slab of smoked-then-fried whitefish offered a unique combination of flavor and texture. My "SLUH (St. Louis University High) Smoked Turkey Melt," topped with Gringo Cheese and sprinkled with bacon bits, was smoky cheesy indulgence. We enjoyed a shared dessert, freshly-made beignets, but if we ever return here I'll certainly pull the pin on their "Sweet Hand Grenades" (donuts). read more

Went here with another couple after a long day of moving . Nice big space loved the vibe inside. We ordered a lot of things off the menu since we wanted to try it all.... Breaded Mushrooms * great breading but so so on the shroom part. Little to no seasoning. Sauce is fantastic. Chicken and Dumplings * bland Sweet potato Fries * These were decent and crispy Meatloaf Special * I didn't try this but my friend said it was pretty good. Chicken Wings * also not too much flavor but sauce was good Chicken Alfredo Pasta * Looked so good but no flavor Tenderloin Bites * So dry so you HAD to dip in the sauce which luckily was great. Ice tea was unsweetened and really good. Service was fantastic (they did get our order wrong but no big deal and quick to fix it) everyone was super nice. My friend and I ate there Friday night. The service was ok to start but went downhill from there My friend's Salad was supposed to be grill chicken with crisp bacon. It came out with greasy fried chicken and whimpy bacon. She asked the waitress to please have it remade. It finally came back with the grilled cold chicken, NO BACON, and NO CHEESE. When we tried to get the waitress' attention, she just blew us off. We had to wait over 20 mins to try to pay the bill, finally paid enough cash to cover the bill. I call the restaurant to speak to the manager, and was told the restaurant was too busy to speak to the manager. It is such a shame for this place to treat people this way. read more

This was our first time to Cafe Telegraph. We have heard nothing but good things from people who have eaten here. The restaurant's decor is really nice and cozy. Lots of lights and eclectic stuff. There are plenty of TV so you won't miss a game!!we also love that everything is named after a place in South City. A street or school, etc We started out with a cocktail of Tito's and Sprite. The price point wasn't bad for a "tall" ($5). We ordered the Lemay Pan Fried Wings in Sweet Asian Chili. These were our favorite. I got the The Point "Foxhole" which is a slightly smoked Roast Beef Sandwich with Bacon, fried onion straws and a Gringo Cheese Sauce. I will pass on this one. It had to much stuff on it you couldn't close the bun and the cheese sauce made the bread so soggy you couldn't pick it up. It had to be eaten with a knife and fork. It was also very fatty. My hubby had the St. Andrews Pulled pork. The sweet BBQ sauce was pretty tasty. The Sandwich was good. The meat was almost "minced". We also had the Wohlwend House Salad. I highly recommend the House Dressing. Eventhough I was disappointed with what I got this time around... I am excited to go back and try some other items. read more

If your looking for beers and sports and live music this place is awesome. Also is a good place to have last second family gathering on a Sunday night. The only downfall is the food is not that great definitely just bar food nothing too extraordinary about it. And the place kind of has an odor of burnt moldy cheese not very appetizing. So I give it 3 stars. You'll still see me there drinking a bucket of beer for day drinks but I probably won't order any food unless I'm a bit drunk and hungry lol. read more

I'm pretty impressed with the way they've built out this place since our last visit years ago. The look and feel of the front room and bar are awesome, especially if you remember previous restaurants/bars at this address. They outclassed the neighborhood tenfold. We had a fried fish special with fries and cole slaw, also shared a house salad with "blackened" chicken. The blackened chicken was smoked thigh with a light BBQ sauce in my estimation, but it tasted great so okay. The fish and cole slaw were fantastic, fries kind of meh...wife didn't appreciate sugar in the seasoning. Service was excellent. Say hi to Chuck in the bar, who know how to make a killer margaritas. On my recent visit to STL, my daughter & her husband suggested this establishment. I'm down for BBQ anytime and we were not disappointed. The menu items are all named after local schools. I had the St. Andrews Pork Sandwich (sans bun) and my daughter had the same but with the bun. We really enjoyed the meal. My daughter got the fries, while I opted for the homemade applesauce, which was the most delicious applesauce I have ever had. The right amount of cinnamon and spices. My SIL had the Po Boy which he said was very tasty. I will def stop by for a visit in the future. read more

Best kept secret in town. Went their on a Friday and had the best fish and boneless wings with buffalo sauce I've had in a long time. Fry time was right on, both the chicken and fish were crunchy, nice golden brown, and the Fish tasted great. Friends got the pan seared smoked wings and the were amazing. The seasoning on the fish and fries was amazing. Service was good and the food wait time was spot on for as busy it was. I couldn't believe it was that good and had to try again for lunch on Sunday. I saw a lot of people getting the pulled pork nachos on Friday so we tried them along with smoked chicken breast with veggies and a sweet potato and my wife had a chicken wrap and sweet potato fries for our main course and food was amazing again. My niece took my mom and I to Cafe Telegraph for mom's 81st birthday on August 27th!! The server (I think her name was Lily??) made mom feel like a queen and took excellent care of us!! the food was delicious and served hot! with large enough portions that we had to get go boxes for what we were unable to eat! The atmosphere was incredible! The decor celebrated area high schools and menu items were named after some as well. Mom chose hot apple pie alamode for her complimentary dessert which was large enough for the three of us to share!! Our server, Nicole, was great -- very friendly and helpful. I ordered the Smoked Meatloaf Sandwich with a side of fries, and my husband ordered the pulled pork sandwich. Oh my word! - The meatloaf was delicious! The sandwich is topped with fried onions and jalapeños and their signature sauce. The flavors of the meatloaf are exceptional. - The pulled pork had a great flavor. - The fries were just crinkle cut fries, but they were hot -- and I enjoyed dipping them into the side of BBQ sauce they brought out to me with my food. The sauce was great, too! Servings are large. My leftover meatloaf sandwich was still amazing the next day! Like many restaurants, they make more profit on drinks but if you want to draw customers in you need to serve better food! Café Telegraph is very hard to put in a category. They have normal bar food, burgers, fries, onion rings, hot pretzels, BREADED BACON. They also have an Italian menu, pasta, pizza, toasted raviolis, meatball sandwich. Am I finished no. They have a smoke house featuring, pork steak, chicken, meatloaf, and ribs. I had the pork steak and it served with a dry rub with BBQ sauce on the side. I like my pork steaks old school no rub and sauced cooked into the meat. What is astounding is how big the pork steak is. Gargantuan. Godzilla, Big Foot huge. This can easily feed two people or if you are wimps 3 people. For $16.00 you get the pork steak, and two sides. Mrs K. had the pulled pork sandwich. She ate only 1/3 of the sandwich before calling it quits. She is not a fan of dry rub and was not happy with her sandwich. This is in no way a slam at the food. It was preference. All the food is named after St. Louis High Schools. I could not find my dear Chaminade but St. John Vianney was on the menu.. There was a tilt toward the Catholic schools. So I had to ask our server where did you go to school? St. Elizabeth's and Soldan. Wow now that is interesting. (for those reading this not from St. Louis this question is very normal to ask. It also tells you many things about the person, IE religion, affluence, status.) I would not hesitate to recommend this place. Service was very good and friendly. Sunday night dinner and it was my first time at Café Telegraph. We had a party of four and tried the following: Fried Green Tomatoes: Crispy and hot. I hate tomatoes and I enjoyed the bite I tried. Pulled pork wrap with fries: Fries were basic crinkle cut. The pulled pork wrap was great. I took half home. Fish Sandwich Roast Beef Sandwich: The comment was made that it was one of the best roast beef sandwiches he can remember eating. Salad with Chicken on it Apple Pie with some kind of crumb topping: The table shared this. I never eat apple pie and I thought it was delicious. Great experience and I will most definitely be back. We've been to Cafe Telegraph many times and enjoy the environment and the food has traditionally been very good. However, if this visit was our first, it would be our last. The bacon appetizer was terrible. No one should ever purchase it. I can't understand their thinking. My ribs were overcooked, dry and hard to eat. My friend had the brisket and said it was not at all good. Something has changed here. Maybe new help in the kitchen. I'm sure they will get it right but for now I cannot recommend. read more

We were searching for something new and happened upon this place after searching for brewpubs in the area. We will definitely be back. We were very impressed with the hospitality and the food. We sat at the bar and had a beer for about 15 min before being seated . Our waiter was very attentive noticing the ketchup was getting low and we didn't have to ask for anything. The brisket burger was juicy and humongous. My husband had the brisket sandwich and again huge and very juicy/ tasty. Great quality for the price . Steak fries were great- not greasy So happy to have found this place and look forward to returning soon. Love the smoky flavor to the meats . It's the real deal! read more
