I was so disappointed in the food and most of all the service in this place. We came in and ordered 2 sandwiches and some coffee. They took 25 minutes but I had my coffee so I was happy to wait. The sandwiches came up. I ordered the twisted chicken, but the sandwich had 3 of the ingredients missing off of it. I asked them if they were out of cheese, tomatoes and peppers. They took it, without an apology and took another 20 minutes to remake it. When it came back out it was like they were trying to prove a point. I got a cold panini with only cheese and chicken on it.... I will never be coming back, I spent 10 dollars on a sandwich I didn't eat.... read more

I'm still big on the first impressions, with a priority on food. Also, this is more of a 3.5 star review, but I'm rounding up as usual. It's a quiet cafe with plenty of guys on computers. Of course, I was part of a noisy female bunch messing all of that up. An artistic vibe was evident from the decor to the staff. One peeve though -- the one unisex bathroom did not have a hook (or reasonable alternative). Please add this basic hardware to help anyone with outerwear or a purse out. I wasn't even saved by a door closure. I've been to enough Chicago cafes to know that my experience could go one of two ways: 1) I will pay high prices for sub par and unsatisfying food, attitude/ambivalent staff issues and a general lack of comfort OR 2) I will pay a reasonable price for delicious and filling food, courteous staff and a decent level of comfort. I'm happy to report that I experienced the latter on my initial trip to Cafe Urbano. Let me break down lunch: TUNA EGG MELT ($7, with $.50 for avocado, side salad came with): Alright, the avocado wasn't put to the side as requested. That initial thought fled my brain pretty quickly, as my first bite brought out the straight-up rude. My moaning over this sandwich was distracting to the table's conversation. I apologized, then tried to keep my worshiping down unsuccessfully. No doubt -- the sandwich was spicy with black peppered tuna (maybe with jalapenos) and chipotle gouda. Then, there was the huge beefsteak tomato slice and the rebel avocado. Also, I liked that the side salad had a savory vinaigrette and fresh fruit pieces. HOT CHOCOLATE (w/ almond milk - $2.5): I liked that the drink wasn't missing salt that enhances the chocolate, but I was not impressed. It seemed pretty weak on the chocolate flavor. For about $11, I was full for the rest of the day -- on the healthy side of satiated. I was energized for an evening meeting and motivated to write this review. Kudos for tasty value. read more

A sweet little neighborhood gem that's out of place on Elston Avenue which is generally lined with car repair shops and HVAC businesses and the like. I got coffee and a breakfast burrito here. Both were quite good, with the quality and presentation one would expect from a solid quality neighborhood café. Charming ambiance too with stacks of books to browse. Four stars for quality and service, an additional star for having a copy of Hayek's The Road to Serfdom in their book selection. read more

The local artist's and authors works are displayed throughout. The wedge-shaped storefront adds to the appeal. Four family members (+2 preschoolers) stopped in for lunch & coffee this week. Good sandwiches & coffee! I forgot my purse on the back of my chair and since helping our son & his wife w/packing & moving out of state, didn't notice it missing til Cafe had closed. Tried the chicken sandwich (I think it was called twisted chicken?) -it was fantastic and very tasty! In addition, I tried the cafe con leche. Both were worth the price. While today was my first day visiting, I don't think it'll be my last. Parking was a breeze as well (on a Sunday). Highly suggest a visit if you are looking for a coffee shop. read more

Coffee by metropolis is good! Breakfast burrito and cubano were delicious. Things that could be greatly improved: woman with the couldn't-care-about-anything attitude (I asked for no tomatoes and seemed to receive extra in my burrito) and the pastries from Costco (really???? I travel to Mexico frequently and it is IMPOSSIBLE to find a mocha with Mexican chocolate anywhere: Cancun, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tequila, et al... Gerardo and Karla make a great Mocha Abuelita to accompany superb muffins and scones. Interesting local art. Wish I lived closer. read more

For starters, the service was terrible. I was not greeted upon entry, while the cashier (or whatever his role is) stood at the counter on his cellphone. Secondly, it was empty and took them nearly 20+minutes to make a turkey panini. Third, I came to this place expecting to get a sandwich and mini salad. I was later informed (after purchase) the sandwiches do not come with mini salads anymore. Even with that information, you are not accommodated for that reason. So I practically paid $11 for ONLY a sandwich that was drenched in sauce, little meat, and barely any avocado (which I paid an additional .50 for). Overpriced, overrated, and limited options. Love it! I was there for about 3 hours to do some online computer work, quick service. I ordered a red eye to wake me up and it was delicious. The staff is very nice, bathrooms are clean and I love the decor. Great place and great music. Small space though in case you have a big group it's more of a trendy cozy spot. read more

Everything we ordered off the menu got a response of "I need to see if we have that left." We were there mid day and they had no bread left for sandwiches, our choices were blueberry bagels or wraps. I have been here about 5-8 times within the last 6 months. Let's start off with the positive and why it deserves some stars. This place has a great chill vibe. What I assume are local artists, their work hangs on all walls so while you wait for your drink you have something to admire and look at instead of your phone (I am so guilty of this). Let's talk about the ice coffee, these guys serve your ice coffee with frozen coffee cubes, ummm, brilliant! I for one hate the water down effect or not enough ice to cool my coffee problems, but never here! The food here, breakfast and lunch, is so unique and absolutely delish! Sorry for the lack of pictures on that, but believe me your taste buds won't be disappointed. That is if you can over look at the areas that need improvement (sounds better than saying the negative stuff). Except for when the owner is at the counter, service here is absolutely terrible. All from bad attitude to not attempting to connect with your friendly customers. Next, food takes FOREVER to cook. I mean really, 20 minutes for an egg burrito?! Lastly, the place is clean, but the seats at this coffee shop are torture. They are made out of hard wood and is not comfortable after 5 minutes! I mean, a few cushions would make a world of a difference. Overall, I want to love this coffee place, but to me customer service is a deal breaker, and that really is why it keeps me from being a regular and why this place earned only 3 stars from me. read more

Visited this place thinking it was going to be similar to every coffee shop. Boy was I wrong. I wish I could give Cafe Urbano 10 stars. The coffee was delicious and the food was out of this world for only being a small coffee shop. If you're taking the CTA is very convenient to get to! 5-10 minute walk off the Irving Park blue line in a safe neighborhood. I come all the way from Humboldt Park to get coffee and food here regularly. Would recommend to anyone and everyone! read more

So today my fiancé and I decided to give this place a try. (Mistake) So we ordered and our food took 40 minutes to come and my order was wrong. I returned it and kindly asked for my order and within 20 more minutes it finally came. But. (There is a "but" here) The avocado was black. I picked out the black pieces and continued to eat. (Another mistake) Needless to say, I'm not feeling well. If I'm gonna pay 9 dollars for a sandwich, it better have quality ingredients and NOT MAKE ME SICK. Please and thank you. read more

The brother and sister that work here are so wonderful. They are thoughtful in the way that they create a beautiful and mellow atmosphere in the cafe. The coffee is great, and it made me realize and appreciate the quality of coffee beans that are roasted locally in Chicago. The atmosphere in the cafe even made literature more beautiful to me, and I enjoyed listening to Sade and reading Lorca and Shakespeare at the window table, watching the snow fall. Saw the reviews and thought we would give it a try. We drove a bit, and it took a while to find parking. Ordered the albondigas soup along with a panini and salad. After paying for the order and waiting about 10 minutes I was informed they ran out soup. not just that soup but all soups, how can you not know you don't have soup especially an hour and a half into service.There were three people in the restaurant and one child so it's not like it was crowded. They made no attempt to rectify the situation so we left, never to come again. read more

Super bummed today after receiving my food. This was my "go to" spot when I have out of town guests. I have eaten at the cafe 5-10 times which is adorned with great art. The coffee drinks are delish, I've not had better. I love to order carry-out when friends and family visit. Usually we get a couple breakfast wraps a few paninis, beautiful variety of pastries, raspberry mocha lattes and horchata lattes. Typically the sandwiches and wraps are served with an amazing side salad. Not anymore. Prices are the same but no salad anymore. The salad is listed on every menu found online yet you do not get one anymore. Not only was the salad a perfectly refreshing accompaniment but it rounded out the meal with a veggie and looked great! My friends and family always commented that they'd go back JUST FOR THE SALAD!! $8.00 for a a' la carte wrap with no mention you will be receiving only half of what is posted on the menus is a bummer. I would have rather been charged $10-$12 and received what I was expecting. Too bad. I have eggs, cheese, tortillas& ham in my frig. I could've made my own wrap in 5 minutes. It's funny how much a little side salad can make all the difference, but it does. Probably a little bothered that the change wasn't mentioned while ordering and given the option to add. I've been going to spot a little over a year now, roughly when it first opened. We've been needing a coffee shop like this in the Irving Park neighborhood for awhile. Cafe Urbano fills a coffee shop void in the area if you are trying to have something other than Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts. I've had their breakfast burrito and it never disappoints. And the coffee hits the spot. Love that it has a neighborhood feel in terms of supporting local artists and efforts. read more
