One of the only "City-Like" places in Midland. I have been here twice and love the upscale ambiance. Having moved into Midland after living in a few major cities, Café Zinc is a breath of fresh air from all of the chain restaurants and really is not ridiculously priced. I absolutely LOVE the falafel sandwich. I substitute the sauce with avocado and it is a great meal! For any other "city folk" in Midland, I highly suggest Café Zinc. read more

A delightful and compact cafe tucked in adjacent to the H hotel in downtown Midland. Beautiful ambiance and design with an exhibit of gorgeous pastries as you enter. We came for a late lunch and everyone was pleased with their meal and drinks. The waitstaff was courteous and attentive and helped make for a great family outing. Overall I was very impressed by the food and decor. It was so cute in there, and I just love the atmosphere. The got the chef salad and French fries, and both were delicious! The only thing I would suggest is to work on the service. Although the staff are all polite, they seemed almost overly formal and snooty. It made me feel like I had to act super formal instead of having a relaxing meal. I also felt like the staff was somewhat unapproachable. Lovely space, attentive and pleasant staff, and well presented tasty food. We were passing through and were really late for lunch but much to early for dinner. So we had lunch with coffee and dessert. I would definitely go back to try their dinner menu if I was in Midland again. read more

The food is great but sitting at the large high top table is a real pain...on one side of the high top is the bar so the servers can't get through this space and neither can customers trying to get to the smaller tables on the other side of the high top table...unfortunately getting rid of the high top and adding a couple smaller tables is the only option we can see...unfortunately this will not provide accommodations for larger parties. read more

The interior of this establishment is beautiful. But for us, the food did not match. Cafe zinc really needs to up their game if they are going to charge such outrageous prices for the food. We started with crabcakes, which hardly had seafood in them and were very doughy. Next came caprese buffalla, i've had better. We ordered a 27 dollar chicken dish, very dry, the vegtables were brown and overcooked. My partner ordered the salmon, again, dry and wayyyy too much butter. The hilight of our evening?, the brown sunflower seed bread that came with dinner. We had just got back from a trip to chicago and dined at some really great trendy restaurants that were fantastic and less expensive. I find alot of these restaurants in small towns with no surrounding competition become very complacent and lackluster. Cafe zinc is one of them. read more

The key lime pie, which is not on the menu, but is always available for desert, is amazing. Good wine list and good cocktails are available. What a lovely place for dinner! Pretty room, great staff, wonderful salads, knowledgeable bartender. The scallops with pea shoots, other green stuff plus smoky bits on the sides were amazing! The salads were unique: grilled peaches with burrata and a tangy balsamic vinegar dressing. Nice bread basket, especially the dark dense stuff. Desserts in the display case looked wonderful, but we didn't have room. Nice selection of wines by the glass. I'll be back, today, for breakfast! read more

Far too bright inside for evening and night time dining ambiance. Tables are cheaply made and too low for the chairs and the chairs are so uncomfortable! The decor inside feels more like a cafeteria than any French bistro I've been to with the combination of blinding white chairs/tables and bright lights. Thought this would be a sexy date night kind of place but alas, it's anything but romantic. The food is so so, good for Midlanders' taste buds. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly but extremely salty. In fact, all the food seems to be salty...almost to inedible levels. The risotto was over cooked, super salty, and tasted like it came from a box mix. I was with a group and no one had much to say about their meal. I don't think I'll be back, sadly. read more

Pretentious but without a good reason. Food was good, not phenomenal. It might have tasted better outside but the last outdoor table was apparently reserved for the host's friends? Also might have tasted better had we felt even a little bit welcome. We waited a long time for everything. We do a fair amount of traveling and fine dining, and this was a serious disappointment. If you go, wear your best Sunday clothes, maybe you will have better luck than we did. read more

Cafe Zinc is one of the best new spots in Midland for a slightly upscale dining experience. It is a great place for a nice business dinner or a night out with a loved one. The menu rotates and seems to based on seasonal offerings. The food is much more down to earth compared to the Table restaurant up the block. You can dress up or down and fit in. The food is fresh. I've eaten at Cafe Zinc twice in the last month and only gotten sick once. My caper/salmon omelette was reasonably good and fairly priced. Dinner, on the other hand, was not very good and definitely not worth the price. I ordered a risotto with sunfish. The fish was lightly seasoned and cooked well, but the risotto was not fully cooked. I had the special for dessert (some sort of apple bake) that was completely forgettable. On top of that, I was sick the next day. Not worth the price. read more

I've always liked Zinc for their ambiance and nice setting as - let's face it - there are no restaurants in Midland of this or similar level of food and atmosphere. I always recommended Zinc to friends and visitors as the best dining establishment in town. However, last night's dinner made me change my opinion. Their special for the night was Thai-Basil Skirt Steak, both me and my husband ordered it. It came with a vegetable chimichurri and was served on a bed of rice noodles. In fact, this was the worst tasting meal we both had in many months. The skirt steak had a lot of fat in it, and tasted weird to put it mildly. The veggies were ok. The noodles were bland and completely flavorless (no sauce or seasoning) and i couldn't force myself to eat them despite being very hungry. We would be better off eating dinner at Logan's or Applebee's and not having to pay $28 for each of the "specials". I'm only giving it 2 stars for the ambiance. read more

Wow wow wow. What a bright bright bright end to an otherwise dreary, winter Sunday. I am from California and wanted to stay at Hotel H (home to Cafe Zinc) but it was booked for three of the ten days of my Midland stay so couldn't. I had reviewed the French-inspired Cafe Zinc menu and knew it was an option whether staying at the hotel or not. Wide-plank wood floors, white marble, exposed brick and fire-engine red accents welcomed me upon arrival, creating a chic, warm, industrial vibe. It was as much NYC or Milan as it was Paris. I had salmon to start and salmon as my main course. They were both divine and I was ecstatic that the courses included some of my favorite super foods (salmon, kale, sweet potato, ginger, seaweed, grapefruit, apple, etc). Who would have thought I'd be dining like this in Midland, Michigan? The wine list was terrific and moderately priced. I had a dry, French Chardonnay to start and it was fortunately anti-oak and anti-butter - two things I absolutely despise!!! I had a Malbec with my main course and a heavy-handed splash of dessert wine that the chef recommended with tiramisu for dessert. Yum yum yum to both. In a community filled with what seemed like a sea of horrific chain restaurants, Cafe Zinc impressed and surprised. Looking forward to tomorrow night's dinner! read more
