I discovered this place from buying a gift card for a friend last year. I was amazed! I had no idea what kind of a place this is. I thought they only sold pies and maybe some cookies, not a full on diner! I went back the next week and got myself a to-go piece of pie! So, I went back today on my lunch hour (I HAD to have a piece of that lemon blueberry pie!). Well, I also seen a piece of chocolate-peanut butter cheesecake and that quiche looked great so I ordered that too. Went back to work and my quiche wasn't in the bag! I called and got a sweet girl, Emily. No big deal! I worked in food service when I was young and I didn't check my order when I was there and I was blabbering on and on. So, I went back after work to either get the piece of quiche or something else. Well, I wound up getting a pot roast pot pie and yes, another piece of lemon-blue berry pie. Incredible! I am impressed with the cleanliness of this restaurant and the upbeat kindness of the staff. I really think the prices are very reasonable! They have very interesting pies and baked goods, and single slices of pies and cheesecakes. The menu looks very original and I will have to go back for a salad and another pot pie! After walking for about 3 1/2 miles, I was ready for some lunch and I searched the area and this place looked good. It was only a couple of miles from where I was. Walking in, it reminded me of Panera Bread. They had a lot of baked goods on display that all looked quite amazing, as well as pies for sale to take home. I ordered a Chicken Lighthouse Sandwich which came on toasted wheat bread, tomatoes, cheddar cheese and was supposed to have a pesto mayonnaise I believe, but I got it without. I also got a cup of chicken noodle and a slice of their Lemon Blueberry Silk Pie. The whole lunch was great. The pie was especially good. They have a few locations, so if I pass another while I'm in Michigan, I may have to stop in for another slice. It was also very clean and comfortable. The staff was very friendly. Overall, TCPC used to be significantly better than it is now. I don't know what is happening but there is very little filling and a ton of crust. In fact, there was so much that we legitimately had to use a steak knife in order to cut it and had a hard time discerning which pie we were eating between the two we bought! Then to top it off you are charging $17 for a pie?! Really?!?! I live in Chicago and this is expensive! We don't charge this much for pie in Chicago. I just... Have been pretty disappointed overall. My recommendation is for you to take a pass. I mean this is total BS. Do yourself a favor- get a Marie Callendar's pie at the grocery store for $5. At least you'll taste the filling, can cut the crust and can save a few bucks along the way. Seriously- the worst. They can do that too! GTPC is a quick service (order at the counter and wait for it to be prepared) style restaurant, with a few dozen scattered throughout Michigan. The place is a bit on the pricier end, but you are paying for the quality which is excellent. My wife enjoys their chicken fiesta salad. I'd been wanting to try Grand Traverse Pie Company for a while after reading about the main location on a food blog online. After working in Michigan on a project I realized there was a location in town and I decided to stop in. I was looking to grab lunch and decided to try one of their combos - the half Manitou sandwich and a cup of baked potato soup. The soup was creamy and hearty and really tasty on a cold afternoon. The sandwich was excellent and I wish I had a full one - but it was probably a good decision since this left room for pie..... I decided to try a slice of the strawberry rhubarb crumb. Had lunch here. Ordered soup, sandwich and salad and coffee. The coffee was cold, had to get someone to brew fresh, the sandwich was laced with dressing so much so that I couldn't finish. The lemon meringue pie was not fully baked. Meringue was raw and inedible. The soup was good but overall would not recommend this place. As much fun as it is to gawk at rows upon rows of pies and sweets in I cannot bring myself to eat here due to the unhealthy ingredients. I stopped in the store to try intending to get a slice of takeaway dessert, and was awed by the dozens, literally dozens, of pie/baked goods choices on display. The single-serve items were packaged with ingredient lists and nutritional labels, and I curiously examined them to gauge just how guilty I would feel after eating my dessert. It turns out that nearly every single item on the menu (the full ingredient lists are available on their website) contains high fructose corn syrup (HFCs) and/or hydrogenated oils (trans fats). Given the vast amount of research showing health detriments from those ingredients, I choose to avoid eating them as much as possible. Thus, the delicious-looking baked goods are off limits, as are the savory pies, the flavors in their coffee drinks/hot cocoa, the breads in their sandwiches, the dressings/toppings in their salads, and their soups (which do not have HFCs or hydrogenated oils, but do have MSG and mono & diglycerides). It's amazing how many harmful additives can sneak into so much of what we eat, but I am SINCERELY GRATEFUL for Grand Traverse Pie Co. for publishing the honest information. Informed consumers are happy consumers, so THANK YOU, really. I actually did purchase a dessert, one of the two "clean" options being the lemon bar. The bar was good, but too sugary and noticeably loaded with corn starch (another not-so-healthy ingredient). The curd layer was gooey with a slightly crunchy top and dusted with powdered sugar. The crust was also decent, a light shortbread cookie with a little extra salt that made the lemon flavor sing. The crust to curd ratio was higher than what I would make at home, but it probably holds up better for customers who get the bars to-go. The storefront itself is rather large and has an atmosphere similar to a Panera Bread. The combo deals look like a great value; choose 2 of savory pie, sandwich, salad, soup, and a dessert might be included, too. I would hope the coffee options taste good to pair well with the rich desserts, but I did not try the coffee and probably never will. As I disagree with the ingredients used at this restaurant, I am voting with my dollars by choosing to dine elsewhere. read more
