I'm only in Midland occasionally, but I liked Café Zinc enough to go back a second time this spring. I love the bright, clean-looking café look. The food, like the decor, just seems fresh, healthy, and a nice change from the same ole, same ole. It's been a while, but I think I had a quiche one time, fish tacos the other, and both were very good. The cappuccino and pastries my lunch companion and I ordered were great! read more

Nice for a nice lunch or breakfast. Outdoor seating is great when the weather allows. Servers are nice. Hosts are more variable. Some are awesome and one was a little rude when we didn't have a reservation. The food is typically the outstanding part, and they have a good kids menu too. read more

My husband and I had lunch here (it was recommended to us by a local) after spending some time at the DOW Gardens... what a lovely ending to the afternoon! I would love to come back here for breakfast. Decor is *super* cute inside; it has a fancy vibe to it but isn't as crazy expensive as I would have thought for lunch, though it certainly wasn't cheap (dinner is a bit pricey, though I'm sure worth it). Their breads are as beautiful as they are delicious... we took a seeded loaf home with us. I also have an infatuation with the salt and pepper table grinders... if the owner/manager is reading this, where can I buy my own?!? Our server (as well as those refilling our water and bread) was magnificent; friendly, attentive, and gave us tips on how to best cut the bread ourselves. I have zero complaints. Lastly, the food! As I mentioned, we only went here for lunch, but we still tried a few different dishes. These included: Samosas Patties, Horiatiki Wrap, Cafe Quiche, and a blackberry cocktail. The brunch here was one of the best we had. The modern decor with French influence very open and welcoming. I loved the fresh display of breakfast cafe items and baked goods on wine barrels and sophisticated platters. They have a beautiful outdoor patio and we opted to sit inside. We had a great table with crescent sofa booth seating and were able to talk and dine in a quiet atmosphere. The food and drink items are all served with the highest standards and presentation. I loved my Lavazza latte. I enjoyed the Croque Madame and had a bite of the French toast (OMG). Note: This review is solely based on the dinner menu. The appetizers ended up being my favorite part of the meal. The baked feta and goat cheese skillet and truffle fries were the best imo. The french soup is okay too. The salads were very disappointing. The ingredients tasted fresh, but I did not like their take on fattoush. The chef's salad also needed to be cut up, entire pieces of bibb lettuce on a plate was annoying to eat. The entrees were just okay. I tried the filet and it was decent. The sauce that comes with it is a little strong and the sides are just meh. Desserts were alright. I tried multiple with a group and we thought macarons were the best desert option by far. I would even consider coming here just to buy a pack. The other few deserts in the cooler that we tried were good but not great. Service was good but slowed down significantly when we ordered entrees and we were the only ones dining in that night. It seems the vibe and look of the restaurant is what you are paying for here. I think the biggest thing holding me back from rating it higher is the value. For the amount of money spent, I would expect a great meal but it was disappointing. read more

So this morning had a little time to kill. Yelped breakfast and Cafe Zinc came up.Reviews where excellent. So went there everything was as reviewed. Ambience was warm and inviting. My server was Mary she was attentive and warm and friendly. As was my first time there,told her as much. She suggested the Marsala skillet which was every thing she said it would be. Decent restaurant with a high-end feel. Great lattes. Portion sizes were strange though, my boyfriend's steak and eggs was a massive spread, while my pulled pork skillet was a very tiny bowl. Steak was room temp and subpar, but hash browns were incredible, I would come back just for those. Skillet was rather good, but too small... not looking for diner fare here but it was a very small serving. Service was okay, we were given the WORST steak knife ever... barely made it through the meat. Atmosphere was great though, it was absolutely lovely sitting outside. I would return just for the vibes. I'm gluten free and they did have a couple options for me, which was nice to see! I saw an old man in a wheelchair struggling in here though, the inside restaurant is not very wheelchair accessible, which is surprising considering we're not in New York or other crowded city. read more

An absolute gem of a restaurant. Oh, the food, the service, the stunning modern space inside & the lovely wrap-around patio outside. Yes this restaurant is extra fancy, but the staff is extremely kind & the level of hospitality is top notch. If you're visiting Midland, you must have at least one meal here. Since it was our anniversary and we were staying in the adjoining hotel, we opted to have both dinner & breakfast at Cafe Zinc. We ordered the Michigan beet salad and the Morroccan plate with no cheese - to make it a Vegan meal. Our eyes grew wider w/ each bite - oh how delicious it was! The vegetarian and vegan selection on the Menu was limited, but they are extremely accommodating and made the menu work for us. We loved the wine we tried, called Kabinett. It's a type of German sweet wine I'd never heard of before. Pro tip: if you drive an electric vehicle, there's a free plug-in charger in the parking garage below the building. The lot is no-fee, but I assume that's reserved for either hotel guests or patrons of Cafe Zinc. So, charge up while you dine! read more

During my stay in Midland, I had two breakfast meetings at Cafe Zinc, and thoroughly enjoyed my meals. The service is excellent, the coffee is good and strong, and the decor is clean and modern. The food is very tasty for a hotel restaurant. The first day, I enjoyed the daily special, which was an egg white frittata with mushrooms, peppers, and onions. Served alongside crispy hash browns and rye toast, it was definitely a splurge. But it was oh so delicious. The second day I decided to go a different route, and had the steel cut oatmeal, served with brown sugar, fresh berries, walnuts, and milk. All are served on the side in cute little stainless steel cups so you can customize the oatmeal to your liking. (If they had offered Vermont maple syrup instead of the brown sugar, they might have earned a fifth star.) If my travels bring me back to Midland, I look forward to checking out Cafe Zinc's lunch and dinner menu. read more

Fancy ass place. You'll forget you're in Midland. Came here for brunch and got a jalapeno corn bread skillet that was on special... why on special? Just put that on the menu for good. The coffee is also delicious, but it's from Illy, so that shouldn't be a surprise. I felt a little under-dressed walking in here, because Cafe Zinc looks like it might have snooty/stuffy service, but it isn't like that at all. If you'd told me when I was a kid that I'd grow up to be a journalist and food critic and that one of my most memorable meals would be at a French spot in a pretty happening downtown Midland, I would've laughed in your face. Frankly, if you'd told me that a month ago I still might've. A native Midlandian who's spent my whole adult life on the other side of the state, I've had very few visits to my home town in the last 25 years. Boy has downtown Midland evolved into a really exciting area -- bookended as it is by the H Hotel and the Dow Diamond. My meal at Cafe Zinc was not only the highlight of my brief time in Midland for a conference, but also one of the culinary highlights of my year. YUUM! All the little details are divine here. They bake their own incredible bread and unforgettable pastries, both of which pair wonderfully with a nice bubbly glass of prosecco. My entree was divine -- an acorn squash and farro entree salad with a maple butter sauce and micro greens that was one of my favorite things I've ever eaten AND healthy. I will absolutely be ordering it again on a future visit. I could also see spending an entire future visit just sampling goodies from their pastry case. It really was like being back in Paris gazing upon these delights that are as eye-catchingly artful as they are delicious. Oh la la! read more

I wish I could give this place a better rating but it was just massively lacking on our visit. My brother swears by this place and has been a number of times previously. He was more upset than me when we left. Such a bummer. In fairness, it was Memorial Day and the parade was passing by. That said, unless this was the first ever Memorial Day Parade passing this place...they should have been prepared. The poor waitress had met her match. She came and filled one of our three coffee cups, ran out and said she would be back with more...we didnt see her again for 20 minutes. After we ordered we didnt see her again until she brought our food. We flagged another nice waitress for coffee. The food, which took forever to land on our table, was lacking in flavor all the way around. We enjoyed 1 of 5 meals... Not sure I will be back considering there are so many other options. We had reservations here for a Friday night for dinner. This place is kinda small and an intimate atmosphere, so i'm glad we made reservations. We also came here for breakfast on Sunday morning, it was really busy and we ended up having to sit at the counter. This place was located in The H Hotel, downtown Midland, which is why we ate here twice. And all i have to say is OMG!!!!!! We both loved everything about this place. DINNER on Friday -The young gentleman who seated us on Friday, Noah was super friendly and was accommodating. Then our server, Mary Ann was fabulous! We were celebrating my boyfriend's birthday and didn't really want to be bothered too much by anyone, and Mary Ann check in on us just enough times and made sure our evening was pleasurable. I got the scallops...they were so good and fresh and the seasonal vegetables that were paired with it were cooked perfectly and paired so well with the scallops! I ate every last bite of my food! My boyfriend had the braised short ribs and said they were the best short ribs he's had. We got a complementary dessert for my boyfriend's birthday. We asked Mary Ann what they had, and she rambled about 20 desserts off (super impressive she remembered all of them) and then told us that there was a dessert counter we could look at to see them. The cocktails were delicious as well! I had the Blueberry Rosemary Gin and Tonic. It was a perfect combination. My boyfriend had the Pineapple Margarita and that was just as good! BREAKFAST on Sunday - Like i said, it was packed! Even people just coming in to order pastries and breads. Their pastry selection is impressive. I ordered an Omelet and my boyfriend had the Quiche - both were SO good!!! The omelet came with hash browns and these were the best hash browns ever! They were definitely homemade, not the frozen crap! It was a great meal to end our short stay in Midland. Also, Melody was our server and she was great! The gentleman filling our water and clearing plates was super friendly and efficient too. I mean honestly, everything about this restaurant is above fantastic!
