This caffe Nero is conveniently located near the central T station and next door to HMart. It's a good study space or place to relax with large windows in the front and cozy corners with nice sofas. Given the location and the lack of spacious cafes in Cambridge, it's understandable this spot is always packed any given day. But that doesn't mean the service should compromise. While I enjoy being here in general, today I was ignored by the barista, and for some strange reason, she decided to skip me and started taking orders from people behind me in line, when I was clearly the first in line. Perhaps she thought I was waiting for my drink, but one could at least ask if I've been helped when I'd been standing there for a while. Worse, when I tried to let her know as soon as she started taking other orders, it took a few tries to simply get her attention; I had to raise my voice to get her to hear that I was talking, and the other customers in line also turned towards me, which made it seem like a big deal while it wasn't. I honestly feel like it was completely unnecessary and the situation could've easily been different had the barista been more attentive, mindful, and responsive. read more

But both of them informed me that they don't have the information. Then I told them that one very junior employee of cafe Nero of Central Squire, Cambridge, MA informed me the calorie amount of the cakes of cafe Nero upon looking at the chart that is available inside their store couple of days before. When I told this to one of the staff (Fan) today, then she handed me the chart, and to take a look of the products' calories amount. This behavior is totally unacceptable. Worst cafe Nero ever. Bad customer service attitude, also they always get the drink orders wrong. Not sure why they don't just use a pen to simply write down what customers order on the cups like what Starbucks does. Whoever the hiring manager is at this location needs to be let go asap! I can't even blame the staff for their own incompetencies... What I've experienced several times at this location is just flat out poor training. Staff members standing around having a personal conversations while customers build up, instantly forgetting orders, bad attitudes, etc. I only kept coming back to this location because It's convenient, but the my experience last visit was the final straw. I walked up to the counter that none of the staff were attending and waited for a good 5 mins before someone walked out from the backroom. I smiled and began to motion that I was ready to order when the dude turned his back to me and finished making a latte. I thought "oh, maybe he's just finishing someone else's order..." Nope! He took a sip and walked back to the back room without the common courtesy of saying "hey someone will be right with you" nothing. I do a quick scan of the cafe and notice another employee standing behind me in the corner just staring at me emotionless. I said F@#$ it and walked out and the lady behind me did the same. The bread was stale, at least 2 days old, the "brie" consisted of a hard yellowish blob, and the "figs" consisted of some non-flavorful paste smeared on the rock of so-called bread. Our barista was super friendly, which made up for the fact that they didn't have cold brew at the time. The mocha frappe was super chocolatey and creamy - right up my alley. Loved the atmosphere here more than anything. There were charging outlets every few feet, people were reading and studying while sipping coffee, and the window was open to let the nice weather in. Caffe Nero is my go-to cafe. I've had good experiences at all of the ones I've gone to in the Boston area (South End, Downtown Crossing, etc.) but the Central location has my heart. I've had nothing but pleasant interactions with the baristas. The main guy (manager maybe?) who is there every Fri-Sun is awesome and friendly and I've seen him give out a free sandwich/baked good now and then if something goes wrong or if they're out of something. I get an almond milk cappuccino, and I've tried this at probably 12-15 different coffee shops in Boston, and it is hands down the best at Caffe Nero. Double bonus points for their actual coffee mugs when you're ordering for here! They also always have vegan muffins, which is a plus for me. Oh, and they don't upcharge for milk other than dairy (i.e. almond and soy), so for me, the latte is actually cheaper than other places who do. The punch card is great - buy 10 drinks, get one free. I get why people say the place has limited or not ideal seating, but they're also probably the people who roll up at 11am on a Sunday and expect to find a seat. I go on the earlier side (9ish on weekends) or later on weekday evenings (6ish) and never have a problem getting a seat. WORD OF ADVICE: make sure you have a seat before ordering food "for here" when it's busy. People aren't going to stop working so you can have their seat to eat your sandwich. It can be a little noisy, but I'd echo someone else's sentiment that the noise is more like a buzz that you can drone out. I study, work, take calls, read, etc. and have only once had in issue, but the issue was a rude patron, not anything Caffe Nero could help. read more

Don't go here if you're in a hurry. The counter staff is very inefficient. They will drop a bag, stop to talk about it. Filling a cup with hot water takes half a minute. Ask them to refill the milk pitcher and instead of handing you an already prepared full pitcher, they will slowwwwly refill it halfway; stop. Throw away the empty milk carton. Slowly get out another carton. Slowly open it. Just hand over the half filled pitcher so I and the other five people waiting for milk can get to work on time. It all adds up. What should take a minute takes five minutes. Bottom line: not a good choice in the morning unless Nero trains staff to meet the challenges of rush hour in the city. read more

One of my favorite places to have a cup of tea and get work done at Central Square. Prices are very affordable for the area, service is friendly, ambience is chill and there is free WiFi. One thing to be mindful of is that there aren't tons of tables and most are usually taken, but there are a few large communal tables so you can find a solo spot easily if you don't mind sitting with others. I love Cafe Nero, have since my first encounter in London, but this location never fails to frustrate me. The coffee is great, the decor is inspiring for me as a writer, on those I give 5 stars, but the wait and organization behind the counter make me want to pull out my hair. The service is the slowest I've seen, due to their "Subway" style service. (Each employee takes the order of one person and does it all: food, beverage, and POS.) For a person who orders, mainly, black coffee for here, I can easily wait in a short line over ten minutes. I am not a Starbucks fan, but Cafe Nero could learn a thing or seven from them. Having a designated food employee, beverage employee, and POS employee would streamline their confusion behind the counter and make the customer's experience a more pleasant one. read more

2 things you can always get in liberal, progressive neighborhoods: good bread and good coffee. You get the java part delivered here (in ultra-heavy mugs that require a two-fisted effort). This place also has a great industrial look to it and preserves the brick and beam decors from the bygone era. The coffee drinks are not unlike other coffeehouses (not great, basically average to above average), as is the soft jazz or blues covers you hear coming from Pandora, Sirius, or whatever satellite service they use (or some hipster's iPhone, whatever). Nero is a bit more "chill" than Starbucks (to use a millennial word), though not really a good place to work. Still, some decent pastry offerings, a darker, moodier inner core and very sunny store-front space where you can dodge work for a bit and unwind with a book, newspaper, or buzzfeed break. read more

Friendly and quick service. It's a busy place with limited seating so it took a while until one opened up. The pumpkin muffin was strangely hard except for the middle (perhaps it was stale?) but the flavor was good. The iced coffee was decent and I appreciated that they had soy milk on the self-service counter alongside the regular milk and half and half. There also seemed to be construction going on adjacent to the shop so I have to assume the music was turned up to drown it out. The noise/unusually loud music wasn't enough to really impact my visit, but good to keep mind if you're looking for a more serene spot. read more
