Me and my BF are big coffee nut cases. So every time we passed by this place we drooled with anticipation. Unfortunately, we were never up early enough or around when the place is open. I know I know excuses excuses... WELL. We finally were able to get in on a Monday morning when we both had days off. Parked the car, walked around to the front, and walked in. First off. The place stands out. It's yellow. There's a good amount of tables and places to sit and eat and just chill. It's right on a really busy street, but as soon as you get in this place, it's like the road doesn't even exist. We go up to the counter and look at all the choices. This is NOT one of those 'cafe's" that have Green mountain coffee in a canister in the back. OOOOH NO. The guy, I'm assuming is the owner comes up and just blasts our head with the wonderful assortment of coffee he brews. He's just talking about the beans and we're already swooning. Three bean dark roast coffee? oh yes. And the pastries. Holy mother of delicious goodness. I got a simple iced coffee and a pistachio Muffin. I haven't had one of those since the Java Stop shut down. (Another wonderful coffee place I miss dearly) The BF got a dark roast iced coffee-black. And the owner actually let us try a sample of the Sumatra blend. Let me tell ya. If you have those friends that are like "oooh no. Coffee is so Biter. Bleeh." Drag them here. I have never tasted a more smoother coffee. I stumbled upon this place on my way to another coffee shop and decided to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had loose leaf tea (or bagged tea - your choice), paninis and an assortment of deserts which all looked yummy. So I decided to set up shop for some fun grading and relaxing. They custom brew the tea behind the counter for you, while this is nice, as a semi-weak tea drinker, I had to be careful that it wasn't overbrewed (for me). It also meant that I couldn't refill the mug with hot water after I was done with the first round. As I continued to sit there, several people came in that were all friendly with the owner and workers. It seems like the neighborhood place to go and say hi. I decided to order a panini and while the options all looked yummy, I came to find out that they were out of many of the ingredients so go in with an open mind. I liked the owner, but one of the workers was loud and not that attentive. I had to wait for about 5 minutes to order my sandwich while she texted in the back. For about 30 minutes she was making phone calls for the caffe, but at a volume that was a little unnecessary. Then later talking to her friend in the back, again too loud to drown out. What did make up for her was seeing the older woman making the spinach pies in the back. Homemade like your grandmother used to make is what I was thinking as I watched her work. I probably would've given the place 4 stars, except the temperature was really cold. When another person asked about it, the girl working said that the owner doesn't like to turn on the heat. I have been here a few times because it is close to my work. The iced coffee is just ok, nothing like the competitors in Providence. The egg sandwiches are also just ok and take forever. I find the owner and his presence behind the counter and walking around to be really obnoxious. This place would likely move faster if he kept himself in the kitchen or just stayed out of the way all together. The girls working there looked miserable. It's cash only so be prepared. The best service I have ever received at a coffee shop, hands down. I arrived to Caffe Bon Ami on a rainy Saturday morning after dropping my car off at the dealership for some work in Warwick. I was warmly greeted by the owner and when I said I needed a moment, he told the other staff member that I was new to the establishment and to be good to me. After perusing the yummy sounding menu, I turned to the staff member and asked her if there were any egg dishes. She gladly told me that they have egg sandwiches that can be scrambled or fried, on any of their bagels. I also had my choice of cheese and meat. I ordered a fried egg sandwich on a spinach bagel with brie and bacon. All of their sandwiches are made with real meat, egg, and cheese. No powdered eggs here! After I ordered my jumbo iced coffee, I saw the signs telling me that they don't take credit cards. Boo. I frantically asked the girl at the counter where the nearest atm was. She must have seen the horrified look on my face because she smiled and told me to relax, eat and we would "figure it out" after I"m done. So I relaxed a little, took a seat, and sipped my iced coffee as she prepared my sandwich. Soon enough, I was snacking on my absolutely tasty sandwich. It was so damn good. The brie was rich and melted perfectly by the panini press that they used to toast my bagel. I gobbled it up and relaxed as I smiled at the uniquely Cranstonian crowd that was inhabiting the cafe. I felt a tad out of place because I appeared to be the only non-regular. That fear was eased by the friendliness of the owner. He was super understanding when I told him I had to run to the ATM so I could pay them. He kept making sure that I enjoyed everything and my experience was perfect. I had some time before work this morning, so I decided to sit down and enjoy my chai inside this time, along with some crepes with butter and powdered sugar. "Sit down and relax," said Malcolm, the owner, who did an incredible job running the place solo with a steady stream of customers. In short order, Malcolm walked out to my table with a plate of crepes and somehow (years of experience I guess) managed to not spill one drop of chai, even though the foamy goodness of that magical drink rose well above the rim of the cup. Even without any fruit topping, the crepes were delicious and melt-in-your-mouth; I can't wait to try them with fruit next time. I savored both the crepes and chai drink, as I listened to a bunch of regulars at a nearby table talk about restaurants, waitresses with tattoo sleeves and "moppeens," (a word I haven't heard in many years since my grandmother passed away - it's an Italian slang word for dish towel). The owner is a super douche and made shitty comments about how he doesn't close early enough and how he wishes a truck would run into his building after a few people got in line. We waited at the register for a good 15 minutes as the next people in line without a "hey sorry about the wait we will be with you in a second." We ordered and the lady behind us ordered. The owner knew her and made her coffee before ours. Our panini was done before our coffees were finished. I was uncomfortable the entire time I was in there. Best chai I've EVER had in my life. Make sure the Chai Master makes it for you. Because I was completely unprepared for eating here, allow me to help orient you. First off, nothing, with the exception of drinks, has a price, nothing. Our meal of two crepes, one cookie, a chai and a small coffee came to $25, our drinks were $6 so that leaves $19 covering the rest. Secondly, there are about 15 options for everything here. Do you want your chai with green tea, boysenberry, pomegranate, blueberry, avocado, pineapple, cinnamon, etc. What? I went with the green tea add in and it was delicious. Third, you order, they bring it out to you, and then you pay. Perhaps this has something to do with lack of posted prices? I'm in love. Caffe Bon Ami provides that slow, comfortable little euro cafe I've been looking for!!! And to top it off the food and coffee were perfect. My husband & I had panini (I had roasted vegetable & Brie), coffee (I tried - and adored- the Red Hot Latte which has a shot of cinnamon, yum!), and my hubby topped it off with a toffee cookie! Used to come here a lot for coffee and breakfast. Breakfast is really good. I usually got the egg and cheese on a everything bagel with smoked gouda and spinach. The eggs have chives and other herbs in there, so there's a lot of good flavors going on in there. They also have belgian waffles served with butter and actual maple syrup. Far better than the "table syrup" you get at other breakfast places nearby (looking at you T's). Coffee is good, but not the best in RI. Way better than all of the nearby options though. The guy is also really friendly and the place itself is cozy. Menu could be a little overwhelming for someone that's never been there since it's kind of all over the place. First, the food & beverages are outstanding. But I will NEVER step in there again! At one time my boyfriend & I were fairly regular (weekends) customers. Then I became a very long-term occasional one (I would say about 20yrs). Sometimes Mal could be quite sarcastic but I let it go. I absolutely loved his pumpkin muffins that he only has in the late fall. Every time I wanted 2, he made a face or some small comment because he didn't want to give me more than one. The last time, he made the 'case' that he needed to take care of his 'regulars' ( are they the only important customers?? And why not make extras only for them & put them aside for when the regulars come in?) He hemmed, hawed, made faces--he made me feel like a fat gluttonous pig for wanting 2 pumpkin muffins. He did this in front of other customers. I was so humiliated & hurt. I really miss his food & spiced chai, but I will never go there to be embarrassed again. Crepes were will filled, nothing undone. The batter had a slight sweetness that went very well in contrast with the savory ingredients. Lightly peppered (I tend to overkill with how much I like) as to never feel the need to add more than was served. Tea was, poignantly, one of the best cups I've had around. I tend to take my time drinking a mellow cup, but the tea was brewed fantastically, so much so that I took sips akin to a little kid drinking soda for the first time. The manager was always present and visible, and even checked in with my party, as well as most others. Don't worry/ be disheartened/weirded out/shocked by the banter that tends to occur between the regulars and the owner, that is also part of the charm. (I think??? ;) ) Coffee connoisseurs, this is the place for you. Hipsters, be serious about your coffee, but don't be afraid to ask questions and don't be hipster about it! Inquisitiveness about good coffee is a good thing. I am not yet brave enough to try the Kopi Luwak coffee, but everything else that's made is wicked good. Stopped in here this morning on a whim and really enjoyed this little spot. Initially I was overwhelmed with the options and I was unsure what I was feeling. Another Yelper recommended the 'black forrest' which I thought was some kind of ice coffee butttt it wasn't, I have no clue what it was. I'm a hardcore coffee drinker and had a snickerdoodle coffee that was amazing. The only criticism I have is that they don't accept debit cards and I'm solely a plastic carrier, but they were so accommodating of that and even offered to let me pay next time I came in (we ran to the ATM).
