I've eaten my way through quite a few things here over the years, and while there are plenty of good choices, I keep coming back to the Smokey and the Bandit smash burger. At this point, I probably know what I'm ordering before I even sit down. There's just something about that combination that keeps winning. The food here is consistently good. Everything I've had has been fresh, hot, and full of flavor, and the kitchen seems to have that part figured out without making a big production of it. The menu has enough variety that you can come in with different appetites and still find something you want, but it doesn't feel like one of those places with a menu the size of a small novel where you need twenty minutes just to decide what you're looking at. The beer selection is another reason I enjoy Chomp. There's enough variety to make choosing a beer part of the experience rather than simply grabbing whatever happens to be on tap. Prices are also pretty reasonable for the quality and portion sizes, which is increasingly something I notice because restaurant prices have a funny way of creeping upward when you're not paying attention. The location is another part of the appeal. Chomp sits in a great little part of Providence where you can easily make an evening out of being in the neighborhood. There are plenty of other restaurants, shops, and places to wander around nearby, so it doesn't feel like you're making a special trip just to eat and then immediately getting back in the car. Tonight, though, I have to give a special shout-out to Bella, who was our server. She was outstanding. Friendly, personable, attentive without hovering, and genuinely helpful. She suggested adding bacon to my Smokey and the Bandit, which I probably wouldn't have thought to do on my own. I'm very glad she mentioned it because it was an excellent call. Sometimes the best recommendations are the simple ones, and she nailed it. One piece of advice if you're planning on coming here: make a reservation if you can. Chomp can fill up quickly, and given how good the food is, that really shouldn't come as much of a surprise. It's the kind of restaurant where people come back because they already know they're going to have a good meal, and I'm certainly part of that group. Five stars from me. Great food, good beer, reasonable prices, a fantastic Providence location, and genuinely good service. I've tried enough of the menu over the years to know that Chomp has plenty of options, but apparently I'm still incapable of walking through the door without ordering that Smokey and the Bandit. Add Bella's bacon recommendation to the list of reasons I'm going to keep coming back.

We both ordered the Classic Smash Burger, one with cheese and one without. Unfortunately, both burgers were utterly tasteless, with virtually no seasoning detected at all. The Chomp Sauce that was supposed to elevate the burger was so sparse it barely made an appearance, leaving the burgers bland. Honestly, the bun was the best part. The brussel sprouts I ordered also lacked flavor and seasoning aside from the char, and his Cajun fries were so salty they were nearly inedible. After driving from Massachusetts to Rhode Island as a special Mother's Day treat, it ended up being a very disappointing experience, especially given the overwhelmingly positive reviews. We may have caught them on an unusually busy night, but unfortunately our meals fell far short of our expectations.

We arrived around 5:00 p.m. and there was only one other table occupied, but by the time we finished dinner the restaurant had filled up. After eating there, it's easy to understand why. My wife and I are admittedly pizza snobs. At our home in Phoenix we even have an outdoor wood-fired pizza oven, so we're probably a little more critical than the average customer. Naturally, when we saw pizza on the menu we had to order one. We went with the Carmine Pizza, and it completely exceeded our expectations. The crust had great texture, the toppings were balanced, and everything worked together without trying too hard. I'd go as far as saying it's one of the best pizzas I've had in North Providence. I also ordered the Italian Wedding Soup, something I hadn't had in years, and it instantly reminded me why I used to love it. It was flavorful, comforting, and exactly what I was hoping for. For my entrée I ordered the veal parmigiana. I always think it's a good benchmark for an Italian-American restaurant because it sounds simple, but you'd be surprised how many places manage to overcook the veal or drown everything in mediocre sauce. Carmine's got it exactly right. The veal was tender, the breading stayed crisp under the sauce, and the gravy had that rich, homemade flavor that reminded me of family dinners growing up. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, just the way it should be. Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert. The portions here are generous, and considering the quality of the food, I thought the prices were extremely reasonable. One of the nicest surprises of the evening was finding out our server was also the owner. He spent some time telling us about the restaurant, why he moved into this location, and checked on us throughout the meal without ever hovering. You could tell he genuinely cared that everyone was enjoying themselves, and that kind of hospitality is becoming harder to find. If you're visiting for the first time, just know there's no dedicated parking lot, so you'll need to park on the street. It wasn't an issue at all, and certainly not something that would keep us from coming back. In fact, there's no question we'll be back. It's not a matter of if, but when. They're close enough to our home in Lincoln that I can already see takeout becoming a regular thing after a long week when neither of us feels like cooking. This was one of those meals that exceeded every expectation. Great food, generous portions, fair prices, and an owner who clearly takes pride in what he's serving. Next came a much heavier choice - the gravy fries with duck confit. We left off the cheese, but it wasn't missed at all. These were decadent, delicious & super filling! Next time we'd get a half portion - that would have been plenty! Our final dish was the Shrimp & Grits, but we'd already filled up on the other dishes & ended up asking for this to go. Iceberg lettuce is equal or cheaper than a signature bun like theirs....asking for $4 for plain lettuce was not a good first impression. The food was actually not bad.
