    Screaming BLT
    Michael P.

It's been a while since I've dropped in around here, first time here since Buttonwoods took over and screaming unicorn was manning the food. RI food fights brought me in and you don't get access to the whole sandwich menu here, unfortunately you have to pick between their "Mushroom Bahn MI" and their "Screaming BLT". I went with the BLT since I wasn't feeling the vegan option. The description was "chili-hoisin glazed bacon | sliced tomato baby greens tomato jam | dill pickle pickled red onion chipotle aioli toasty thick-sliced white bread". Honestly, it was underwhelming. It had some tasty components but it was pretty average. The bacon was terribly weak. It was probably frozen precooked bacon that is heated and brushed with a hoisen glaze. I was hoping for some thick cut glazed almost candied bacon. Their avg. sandwich was around $16-17. If paying for that, I'd be left pretty disappointed. On top of that, it probably took around 35-40 minutes to get the sandwich. Again, pretty okay sandwich, the pickled onion, tomato jam and Chipotle aioli elevated things, but it's in vain with the bacon they use. Their other sandwiches sound good, so it's possible I'll visit to try them out at some point but can't see myself running back here after my impression with this BLT.

Consistently delicious food every time I order. Twice I've had one of the best sandwiches ever (both of which were specials). The fries are delish and the popcorn chicken is the perfect snack with a cold beer from Buttonwoods. The next time you're there do not skip out on their food!

    RI mushroom bahn mi

I had high expectations when visiting the Screaming Unicorn. Their menu sounded really good with thoughtful offerings and interesting ingredients. Now, I'm not going to say it was bad, because it wasn't, it was fine. But that's all. It was just fine. I visited this spot as part of the RI Food Fights sandwich showdown, and unfortunately the options to choose from were limited. It was between the BLT (which was a special) and RI mushroom bahn mi. I went with the bahn mi and, after waiting what seemed a bit long, the meal arrived and it was time to dig in. The sandwich looked impressive, it was fairly sizable and plenty saucy. I really enjoyed the first few bites, but the more I ate, the less I wanted it. It was a sandwich that made me bored halfway through. The flavors didn't have as much depth as I anticipated, and the biggest let down for me were the mushrooms. The item description says RI mushrooms, which I love, but these were just regular button mushrooms, kept whole. I think this sandwich could have been elevated if they used a wild mushroom blend, a lion's main, or even a big Portabella cap. So, sadly, I thought the food was just okay. As for the services and decor, also just okay. I didn't feel that the workers were very personable, and I didn't love the vibe of the place. I get what they were going for - mismatched furniture, wearhouse, casual hangout - but it felt too scavenged for me. I appreciate the thought and effort, but I most likely wouldn't go back.

A good burger is such a wonderful thing. I truly love what Buttonwoods has done with the space. The mismatched chairs and funky decor make for great gathering and eating. The burger was so juicy. I usually don't like a wet burger but the toppings come together so well that I didn't care how messy I was getting! The tomato jam and shaved onion are game changers. Service was nice and quick. A little pricey but worth it.

Sitting here eating the crispy peanut cauliflower while I enjoy an IPA from Buttonwoods. We had two of the sandwiches last time. We will be back often to progress thru the whole menu. Really delicious and an incredibly charming group of people running the restaurant.

The first time I came, it was a rainy weekday and this time it was a sunny weekend, so I was expecting an even larger crowd; and my prediction was correct. The line was just out the door but because of their awesome staff, the line was moving very quickly. While we waited in line, we could watch them making pastries through the glass, a couple feet in front of us. I admired that level of transparency. When we were third in line, the kindest lady asked us whether we'd be eating in or taking out and she took down our name to help us find a table when it came time. She did the same for the rest of the people in line. She also gave us some recommendations, including the cinnamon bun - apparently they're so good kids cry when they sell out. I didn't intend to order anything with my drink, but I couldn't get the cinnamon bun out of my head so I ordered it along with my iced spiced chai latte. The hen (I think it's their logo) on the aprons of the employees are super cute. We did secure a table. The tables are close together to maximize the number of people who can sit down but I didn't mind. I love their art all around, mostly of birds which I am obsessed with. I love that they have a lot of natural lighting coming through their tall windows. I also like the navy blue and white theme they have going on. The chai latte was perfect. It was the right color (a dark tan), meaning the ratio of tea and milk was good and I could taste a lot of the spices. The cinnamon bun blew my expectations away. The second my teeth made. contact with the icing, it was a magical feeling. I couldn't quite put my finger on what it tasted like, but the closest I got was dulce de leche. It is truly unlike any other cinnamon bun I have ever had. The dough is soft and there is a good amount of cinnamon. It's also $4 which is not bad. I had a bite of their canelé, which apparently requires a lot of work to make. It was very moist, with a great caramelized finish. I am super excited to try their new weekend dinner menu, but also more of their all day menu items.

I love the book themed decor or the restaurant, and the atmosphere is calm and peaceful, with just enough noise to be comfortable. You can definitely hold a conversation here and be able to hear the others at your table. I ordered the "Between the Acts" cocktail with gin, rhubarb, lavender, cocchi rosa, and citrus. It was beautifully served and tasted even better than it looked. Would definitely order this again. We split the Halloumi fries as an appetizer. The fries were very similar to mozzarella sticks, except with Halloumi, and they were incredible, especially with the hot honey. For entrees, we got the Bucatini and the Chicken & Waffles, and they were both delicious. In fact, I think the chicken and waffles may have been the best I've ever had. I especially loved the thin and crispy chicken cutlet, and the chipotle honey butter was so good! Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert, but the dessert options looked amazing as well. Service was great throughout our entire visit. Our water glasses were refilled promptly and were checked on just the right number of times. Portion sizes were very good, and pricing is spot on. As per usual we ordered a number of dishes to share fully expecting to take some of it home, which we did. We had the charcuterie and cheese tasting board and the Halloumi fries (small slabs wrapped around crumbs) - both tasty. Then the cheeseburger dumplings (interesting but I will probably not order again) and the shishitos in a Parmesan sprinkling, which could stand to be further blackened. Drinks included a large Pellegrino, an Other People's Pinot (the most expensive item at $17 for a glass); ending up with a hot tea and a good double espresso. The 18% service was automatically added bringing the total just under $100. A restaurant worth patronizing.

Nachos - Super awesome and crunchy and fresh. not soggy at all and a huge portion for 15 bucks! Margherita pizza - Super fresh piping hot pizza with fresh tomatoes and Basil! Sriracha Buffalo Cauliflower - This is where things started to turn inconsistent. let's see we had three orders of these and pretty much all three orders looked different, tasted different and some of the bigger pieces were not cooked through. Note to self to try next time! Sweet Potato Wedges - Hot and fresh but again with the inconsistency, some were over cooked almost burnt and some were a little under cooked but for the most part they were nice and crunchy on the outside and nice and pillowy soft on the inside. Luckily we did make reservation for early dinner so we were able to find parking right away. We got there early so the restaurant wasn't open yet. We took a walk around the Westminster for a bit until the place was open. We were sat down right away. Inside is cozy with dim lights and open kitchen and some tables. They have few outside seating available as well. We started with some appetizer raw fish and combo as well as kohlrabi Caesar. We got black bass and a seasonal fish with combo that included lightly roasted oysters, shrimp and squid. All seafood was directly sourced from local port and fresh. Seafood appetizer was delicious. The caesar was interesting. I've never had kohlrabi but it reminded me of radish and it was tasty. Personally i would have preferred little less salt and olive oil so that flavor of the raw ingredient stand out more but was not too bad. My entree was the seafood risotto. Flavorful risotto with some seafood on top. Was a bit messy to eat because of the shells but was flavorful. The crab and shellfish itself was small and a bit underwhelming but the rice was rich and full of fish flavor. My mother had the cacio e Pepe which was good but she said that nothing comparable to one she had in Rome. I was not a huge fan of the thicker pasta but that's just is personal preference. Service was excellent but the table was a bit small and tight as we were very close to the next table and can hear what others are talking about so not a very privately setting. Overall i did like the place. Food and service were good. But it was not anything exceeding expectation and there were few things that detracted from our experience such as heavy seasonings, small dining space and etc... The price is quite expensive for the amount of food they serve as well. I think it's a good place for special occasions.
