It's a place with a lot of potential however I think something is missing. I had a good time listening to a guy playing guitar and tried empanadas. Vegetarian for my surprise tasted very good but the meat ones were kind of plain just meat with chopped onions. Wine was good and dessert (alfajor) was tasty, just like home! I believe a little more light and more spices to the meat empanada would have gone better. But I'll be back and next time I'll try the paninis, been told they were awesome. read more

I just love when a place lives up to my hopes for it! For too long, Caffe Classico had occupied a spot on my list of restaurants that I wanted to try out in Louisville. I perused their menu on line and saw that they offered weekend brunch, so I made a mental note to go on a weekend. When I woke up this morning, something told me that today was the day. Maybe it was the warmer weather, the birds singing their blissfully bucolic song as I woke up, or the sun after a gloomy Saturday (and even gloomier previous week that had seen it -- eek! -- snow). In any case, today was the day. I've been fortunate enough to do quite a bit of traveling, and from the outside, Caffe Classico reminded me of an Old World eatery. The understated sign, the corner doorway with a lever handle, and the large picture windows for people-watching all made me feel like I was a little bit closer to somewhere like France or Argentina. Inside, it had the fastidious simplicity of a coffeehouse in Austria: clean, bright, organized, but never stark. Tables were decorated by an organized container of sweeteners (including sugar advertising a coffee from nowhere other than Austria) and a single fresh rose in an elegant vase. It came as no surprise, then, to read that the owner's wife is from Argentina. I can definitely see the Latin undertones in the place, but there is a decidedly European twist in everything from the menu to the decor. I seated myself and was quickly greeted by a courteous server. After ordering a drink, I asked a question about the menu to help me decide on my brunch. While I waited for my food, she kept my water glass filled and offered me a complimentary lemon scone. The scone was authentic in that it was small (about 2" diameter), and you could taste that it was made fresh in house. It was the perfect thing to whet my appetite for the Spinach Florentine omelet, which was filled with salty feta and fresh spinach, all topped off with a side of homemade salsa and some crusty bread. I was in heaven! I spent my time alternating between reading a book and people-watching. You can tell that this place is a local hangout, as many of the patrons greeted waitstaff by their names, and also went by to say hello to friends and other patrons on their way into and out of the restaurant. It added to the overall inviting vibe of the place, and made me want to come back and introduce friends to my awesome new restaurant find. The service had nothing to do with our experience, it was pleasant. The food- I ordered a Nicoise salad of which was to consist of ahi tuna..it was a scoop of tuna salad, no roasted potatoes and the green beans were just cut green beans with no seasoning, just snap and go. My disappointment arrived with no dressing on any of the salad as well. My nieces fish and chips were burned..they weren't even busy. My youngest son threw up a couple hours later after eating a sausage panini. No one ever answers the phone when I call, I left a message in regards to the situation and it was not returned. I was seriously disappointed as this was our early mothers day treat and my sons school celebration. The romance! The Jamon Iberico! I really really like Caffe Classico! So much so I am not sure where to start... The ambiance: dim lighting, fresh roses on every table, live classical guitar player in the background. The sound level is at a perfect decibel that allows for entertainment and conversation at the same time. The food: This is the first time I have tried the famed Jamon Iberico. I cannot get enough! Everything that Bourdain and Zimmern has said about this legendary ham is true! "Nutty" is the first word that comes to mind when I tried the Sample Jamon. It is not salty like most of the prosciutto I have had. I just need to get the bigger portion when I return. I also ordered a bowl of seafood chowder. It was creamy, rich and spicy. The food here has that light handed touch: unpretentious, uncomplicated but still refined. The portion sizes are adequate but will not leave you dreading your decision to finish the whole thing. I love Cafe Classico and frequented this place many time before I became a Yelper. It should have been one of the first places that I reviewed. This night, I wanted a light and tasty dish that is made with the freshest of ingredients. We visited about 9p on a Friday night. Amy and Tommy (a Classico staple) took care of us wonderfully. For an appetizer, we ordered the Belgian Pomme Frites, which came with three different sauces (regular ketchup, a Wasabi mayo and a Chipotle mayo). The Pomme Frites were lightly salted and mixed with a herb that I could not determine. I liked both mayo dips. My Beau ordered the pork tenderloin with sweet potato puree and asparagus, while I had the Sausages Alamania. It came with mashed potatoes and sauteed red onion. The portion sizes were just right for one meal and were not very large. For dessert, we shared a Strawberry sorbet that tasted as if it contained lots of fresh strawberries (Tommy confirmed this lovely suspicion, lol). It had a creamy texture without the calorie-laden cream. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed our late dinner. I have never had a bad, or even luke-warm experience here. The food is fresh and very good. The service is always excellent and the atmosphere is inviting and relaxing. All of my visits have been exceptionally positive and I will return. read more

Disclaimer: I have only gotten takeout at Cafe Classico! I always wanted to eat in, but I think the lack of parking on Frankfort Avenue always kept me away. I took advantage of the freely available street parking during the CO-VID 19 quarantine and ordered curbside for lunch one day. I paid over the phone and my order was ready in 10 minutes. It was hot and fresh when I picked it up. The frites are some of the best fries I've had in Louisville and the dipping sauces are great, too. I also enjoyed my ensalada fresca. My husband and I stopped in for a quick bite to eat. He had their empanadas through postmates. However, this doesn't look like a place that sells empanadas and they did say it was fairly new to them. They were good but the food here is pretty pricey. I also got their black eyed pea soup and it was pretty good. I wasn't a huge fan of their empanadas, but husband liked the different variety they had. However, they have a way you can buy three but some are not included in those that you can get on postmates. That was a little disappointing because their were a few of those I wanted to try. I may just continue to order from postmates if I decide to try the others. Tried this place for dinner on a Friday night after reading many promising reviews that touted the cafe as a "hidden gem" however i wouldn't return. I thought the ambiance for dinner was odd - small cafe with tightly packed tables and extremely bright lighting. However my review was mainly based on the food quality. To start, the menu seemed confused; it was lunch oriented with a large variety of sandwiches and then an addition of haphazard dinner entrees, none of which seemed very "european cafe" (which seemed to be the intended theme based on the appearance). I ended up trying the fries, empanadas (which were frequently mentioned in previous reviews as a must try), the choripan, and the panini italiano. All of the food was underwhelming. The empanadas were disappointing, soggy, seasoned confusingly and the filling was over cooked. (we tried veggie, chicken, and beef). The sandwiches were disheartening. The panini italiano was pressed with a few slices of deli meat and deli cheese. The choripan was a piece of sausage just cut in half and served in between two slices of bread. Had the opportunity to visit Caffe Classico this week for lunch with a friend. I have driven past this place many times but had never tired it before. My friend suggested it since we were in the area and i was very pleasantly surprised. The food was good and the service was friendly. I was surprised that by the time we were finished our lunch the dining room was pretty full. I had the PANINI CAPRESE. The sandwich was very good, I wasn't impressed by the kettle chips, which were all broken and looked like the chips at the end of the bag. I've had caffe classico a few times throughout the pandemic in both carry out and dine-in forms. While there are some uninspired dishes, on the whole it's very good. I'll start out by highlighting the soups as a star performer. Both the gazpacho and chicken & rice soups were phenomenal. I would say most of the dishes we've had there have been very very good. One or two have been pretty boring. If you can stand a few duds to figure out the gems of the menu, it's worth your time. Aside from the fish & chips, we've mostly stayed to the cheaper sandwich side of the menu, but their entrees look very good. The fish and chips, bocadillo & argentinian sausage sandwich stand out as some of the best items (as well as the frites, of course). One that was a miss for us was the Huevos Fritos al Caballo. The drink menu is both good and good value. The atmosphere is fine, not great. And the service is friendly and knowledgeable, even on fairly busy nights. Classico will certainly fit into our standard rotation and definitely gets my recommendation. read more

I recently went here on a coffee/drinks date after hearing so many wonderful things about this "espresso boutique and cafe". I specifically chose Caffe Classico because it is one of the few and the proud places that serve both coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages that is open a little bit later on a weeknight. That also is not a Vint or a Heine Bros. I love those places too, but sometimes a little variety is nice. Side note: I really wanted hot herbal tea and didn't see it listed on the website, but they do in fact have a variety of 6 or so teas. Even with the romantic atmosphere, overt with single red roses atop the tables, I could see this place being great for lunch with coworkers, dinner with friends/family, etc. You've got two options: the cafe or a more formal dining area. Our group arrived around 6 and the place wasn't full at all, but it did fill within the hour, so if you show up and are a person who normally takes emptiness to mean "not such a good restaurant", do not be deterred. I went for brunch. It was okay. I heard dinner is better here. Coffee: yuuuuuuum. It would be lovely to meet a friend just for coffee and little sweet something. Comes with one of those speculoos gingersnap-type cookies that you get on airplanes sometimes. I also saw gelato and some baked goods. Ambience: pleasant, airy, light wood throughout. Some bar height tables with stools, some regular tables. There's also a back room with seating, I presume for dinner. Food: average. Modest portions, and I am not a big eater. Huevos = two sunny side up eggs over a pile of French fries and a few cubes of balsamic vinegar-splashed petite diced tomatoes. I was taken aback by the concept of eggs and fries at first, but then reasoned it's like eggs and hash browns except fully embracing the fried potato concept. Simple, good, alarmingly easy to hoover up. I got the cup of soup and half salad. Soup was Moroccan lentil, tomato-y with a few chickpeas and warm spices. Good, but I found it a bit salty and the portion small (about 6 oz. (a small coffee at Starbucks is 12 oz.)). For the salad I chose the Nicoise. I was surprised when it arrived with a scoop of tuna salad (i.e. smashed up tuna with mayo and shredded carrot) rather than chunks of tuna, but it was tasty enough. The greens were mixed baby greens. There were also some green beans (maybe 6), halved cherry tomatoes, nicoise olives, slices of boiled red-skin potato (less than half a potato in total), and one-quarter of a hard boiled egg. The yolk had that yucky grey-green ring around it. The salad components were not neatly arranged, but tossed. All in all, it was just okay. read more

I went to Caffe Classico, for lunch. It was National French Fries Day (the waitress did not know that), so we got the French Fries. They are really good French fries. I like fat French fries, and these are not huge steak fries, but a nice size. They are cooked really well, not greasy, and not mushy, but crisp, but not too crispy. They are served, with 3 sauces. One is ketchup, for the purists. I also got the Empanadas. The menu said they were Argentinian style. They were beautiful and large and tasty. I am used to Cuban Empanadas, so I felt like they needed a sauce, to dip them in, and they were not very spicy. I liked that there were yellow roses on every table. The restaurant was very full, for lunch time. They seem to accommodate everyone; groups large and small. Moving tables is not problem. There was a very large group, in the middle, of the room. Service was friendly and not very fast, but not too slow, considering the crowd. They have a nice menu selection and I really want to go back and try a salad and panini. Then have wine and beer. What a nice cafe! Grateful to the Louisville Yelp Elite Squad for this recommendation. Decor was clean and modern and it was busy but we were still able to get a table. They do also have a counter to sit at. Service was a little slow but there were basically two people running the restaurant and they were pretty full. I was ok taking my time. Met an old friend for lunch and really enjoyed it. We ended up doing more talking and less eating so other than the espresso and the Plato Espanol, I really don't have much to report. First the coffee, while better than you would get in most restaurants, it was a little weaker than my personal barista can coax out of our Breville. It was also a little on the bitter side. But definitely a quality cup that delivered the expected caffeine rush for several hours later. Mission accomplished. Next the food - a medium sized plate of Jamon Iberico and another plate with some crusty chewy bread, slices of aged Manchego cheese and a dozen Spanish olives - all drizzled with some nice olive oil. The Jamon was spot on, delicate and just enough fat to melt in your mouth. Just as I remember from our trip to Spain last fall. The cheese was nice and sharp, but didn't overpower the rest. The olives were your standard pitted green olives. A little disappointed that they didn't find a good source for the olives. Olives in Spain are SO much better, less brined with herbs and oil. The bread was fantastic. Nice and chewy. Total for one coffee and the food was $25. Very reasonable. The garlic, shrimp linguine was unexpectedly very tart and not very garlicky. The aïoli sauce with wasabi was mayonnaise with one tiny speck of horseradish that I could not even taste. The service was very poor. The waitress finally came back to refill water after 95% of the meal was done. A good waitress would check on the patrons within the first five minutes of eating. I happen to know since I was a waitress before. I had to get up and get salt since the waitress was nowhere to be found. When I politely mentioned the poor service at the end of my meal as I was paying manager he made no response whatsoever to my comment. He simply stared at me and did not say a word. I also mentioned the prices online did not match the menu and again he did not say a word. I've never known anyone in my life never to respond. It was very weird. One of my long time favorites in Louisville. I love coming here mostly because the food is delicious, but also because the prices are so reasonable. Even their wine list is priced better than most... and an especially better than average selection too. Most of the food menu is available in a half portion (the ones that are not are denoted on the menu). Things you have to try: pomme frites, soup (any and all of them), any of the salads, the feta panini, the saffron asiago risotto cakes, and really most of the other dishes on the menu. I am a huge fan! A live classical guitar player adds to your visit in the back room on certain nights too. Stop in for lunch or a snack too. And get some dessert, regardless of how full you are after lunch/dinner. Cafe Classico has a casual European vibe, different from almost any other spot in town. read more

We all shared an order of fries and they were awesome, I got the curry chicken sandwich and liked it as well, however I felt it would've been better with some greens and tomato. My wife and I dined here tonight after moving to Louisville this week. My wife chose this restaurant based on the solid Yelp reviews she saw and I must say I am very glad she did. First off, the location in Clifton is perfect. The interior of the restaurant is very nice with two rooms: one in the front with more of a coffee shop feel and one in the back that was more dimly lit and had the feel of a proper restaurant. We chose the back room based on the guitar player, who was excellent the entire time we dined. I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted before I even got to the restaurant. We split the Belgian Pomme Frittes after hearing they were previously voted best fries in Louisville. Being a newbie to the city, it is too early for me to say "Best in Town" but they will certainly be an early favorite. The appetizer came with three dipping sauces: a traditional ketchup (standard), a chipotle mayo (flavor balance seemed a little off) and a spicy ranch (my favorite of the three). After polishing off over half of this appetizer, I was sure I would have leftovers from my entree. This was not to be, however, once I tasted my entree selection. I ordered the Pork Tenderloin con Grappa Miel and I highly urge you to do the same. The tenderloin was gorgeously charred with a black peppercorn and thyme rub. It came with excellent sweet potato medallions and asparagus which were complimented in a unique way by the grappa and honey reduction. Of the reduction, I did not pick up much grappa notes, but the honey flavor was strong and nicely complimented the components of the plate. I can not speak highly enough of the preparation of the pork, however. The meat was incredibly tender and nice and hot through every bite. I intended on having leftovers, but just simply could not put my fork down. My wife ordered the Saffron Asiago Risotto Cakes, of which I had a couple bites. The cakes had a very unique flavor, of which I would like to taste in the future. After our excellent main courses, we simply could not pass up dessert. We both had caffe romas, which were very tasty, as well as a chocolate creme brulee and alfajores. The chocolate creme brulee was very good, but did not have the usual consistent of this dessert as it was more of a paste. The alfajores was a star in my book and is a traditional Argentinian cookie sandwich with notes of lemon and coconut. These desserts were a perfect capping to an overall amazing meal. I must say I am incredibly impressed with Caffe Classico. I would highly recommend the spot to anyone and look forward to repeat visits. Being new to the area, it is probably too early to call this one of my top choices in the city, however I look forward to attempting to find a spot that can compete with Caffe Classico's high caliber combination of food, service, and ambiance. read more

I liked everything about this place! My Wife and I headed here during our weekend in Louisville.... and it was well worth it! We grabbed a copy of Louisville magazine as soon as we hit town and noticed that CC was voted as having the best fries.... sold. What the article DIDN'T mention is that everything else seems pretty good too. +1 star for having Chimay on tap! We started by splitting the empanadas (one each: vegetable, chicken, beef). It started off the meal well, and had us arguing which one was best. We both got a panini. Prosciutto, mozzarella, tomato, and spinach for her.... ham, swiss, tomato, and spinach for me. Both fine choices. Of course we made sure to order the frites as well. We finished off with splitting a chocolate gelato and a couple cappuccinos. The decor was uncluttered and clean.... but comfortable. It certainly helped that everyone in the restaurant seemed to be with family or friends that they hadn't seen in awhile. Great conversations going on everywhere. The service was attentive but not overbearing. The meal went along at a leisurely place. Maybe not the best place to eat and run.... but that's just my impression. Price is more than you might feel like spending.... but it was well worth it. LOVE! Not sure how it took me forever and a day to finally check this place out, but so glad that I did. It looks like a kind of upscale coffee shop. And they do serve coffee. But it is so much more. Casual, contemporary cafe in the front and then down a little corridor and there you are in a gorgeous flamenco dancing themed classy restaurant. Nice high top tables, big cozy booths, and most nights, live guitar. The menu is wide ranging and quite reasonably priced, with anything from sashimi quality tuna for their tuna salad sandwiches, to frittes with multiple dipping sauces, to 15 dollar pork tenderloin with sweet potato and asparagus. All of the dishes that I sampled were lovely and we ended with wonderful lattes with these cute little tasty gingerbread meets coffee cookies that were extremely reminiscent of what we would get with our cafes in Europe. Perfect place for a date. Perfect. Without spending a fortune. The art is delightful and elegant. Apparently they also have flamenco dancing some nights which I can't wait to see! Will give a 2 star only because the food was good. Was so craving the fries but the service was horrific and they obviously don't really care about their guests' experience. They care more about their own attitudes it seems. They look at you like you're just there to bother them. Our food took 1hr and 45 minutes to come out. We were about ready to leave when it finally showed up and it was as if it was painful for the manager to say sorry. They finally said they were short in the kitchen. Well, that would have been nice to know beforehand. Communicate, communicate, communicate - standard rule. They have a really weird service etiquette. And we sat and watched two tables that arrived after us get served. We didn't order anything unusual that would take more time. Four words - Saffron Asiago Risotto Cakes. O.M.G. I went here for lunch with a friend last Friday after finally realizing this place does have food after having been misinformed previously. I am very happy to have discovered the truth. This place was fantastic. The portion of risotto cakes served up on a lima bean succotash was huge, and I still ended up eating every last bite. I do love lima beans, but these were some of the best I've ever had. And the cheesy risotto cakes were delicious. My lunch date had an Italian Panini and was very happy with her choice. I saw some other sandwiches on the tables around us and they looked great, too. Our server was a little on the odd side (I've had a run of those lately), but the guy behind the counter was super friendly and chatty. This spot has a great little coffee, wine and liquor selection. I've only eaten at this place once, but the salad I had was absolutely tops! The lyonnaise salad had nice, fresh lettuce, delicious bacon-y dressing, a perfectly-cooked egg and a "crouton" (ie a toasted slice of baguette). I ate the whole thing in one sitting and scraped the plate. I am taking off one star because the crouton was a little thick and hard to cut and the ambiance was a little quiet, but even so, I would come back for another "breakfast salad" (my words, not theirs'). read more

I've been coming to Caffe Classico for years. My first visit was strictly for the coffee. The owner take a lot of pride in crafting an excellent cup...and it IS excellent coffee. Originally offering only a lunch menu, Caffe Classico slowly expanded to a full dinner menu too. The front part of the restaurant is casual and usually pretty quiet. The back addition offers booths, tables, and seating at the intimate full bar. In the back there is usually live guitar music during the dinner hours, too. ALL of the selections on the menu are excellent. The freshly prepared dinner salads and soups are great. The Belgian Fries appetizer is to die for: piping hot fries with three dipping sauces. The thin crust pizzas are yummy too. The sandwiches are more than good. I believe the bread comes from the Blue Dog Bakery just down the street. I've never been disappointed! The owner specifically decided NOT to have WiFi available. Instead you're supposed to enjoy each others company. This actually works. You'll see people having intimate conversations over coffee or a meal; not tangle of cords to folks computers while they're updating their FB status. It's actually a very pleasant atmosphere. Bravo!
