No hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill for us as we dined at The Grape Leaf on the Fourth of July. We had our fill of hamburgers and hotdogs and needed a gyro with rice and a Greek salad. With a scant crowd and pleasant service we had a peaceful and filling meal without the throngs of people. Generally the restaurant is busier on most Saturdays but the July Fourth celebrants didn't think beyond the usual suspects for a delicious dinner. Shame on them. read more

Probably the first and last time I'll visit. We came for lunch and tried the falafel and lamb gyro, but unfortunately, neither had much flavor. The falafel tasted burnt, and the accompanying sauce was bland. There are definitely better Mediterranean options in Louisville. It's been 11 years since I was last at The Grape Leaf?!? What what! Happy this has been corrected, and happy to not only update my review but to also up the number of stars given. The Grape Leaf should not be overlooked if you like Mediterranean food. I decided to switch things up a bit, and instead of getting shawarma, my normal go-to, I got the salmon kabobs on rice. And this was lovely. I ate every bit of it. The large pieces of salmon were cooked well. And the salmon plus rice plus sauce was a great combo. I will definitely be getting this again. The Grape Leaf is the perfect spot for a vegan lunch of Mediterranean goodness! There's a lot for us plant-based types and you will not leave hungry. I'm a lentil soup fanatic, could probably eat it daily and it's so good here, a hearty portion (cup or bowl). Just the right soup to soothe you to the core on a winter day. I followed with hummus, which is also excellent. I'm not a big fan of plain cold pita so I ordered it with veggies instead. The menu is so amazing, though, with an entire vegetarian section as well as oil-free options (never saw that before at a Mediterranean spot). I mean, I'm pretty happy at most places like this because give me a good hummus and lentil soup or fatoush salad and I'm happy. But they have stuff like cauliflower shawarma and moussaka and biryani (note that these may have tzatziki which is yogurt-based so if you're vegan, that will need to be left off). We had great service (quick because we were on a time crunch). The restaurant is cozy but lots of windows to sit by and people-watch. I'd gladly come back anytime! read more

On a perfect day to sit outside we visited The Grape Leaf. Dinner starts at 4p and we arrived close enough to order from the menu. I ordered a chicken kabob with choice of two sides, and I selected basmati rice and a greek salad. It was delicious! The chicken was a bit more seasoned than I'm used to but with the rice it evened it out. My husband enjoyed his lentil soup and gyro sandwich. The Grape Leaf is a longstanding restaurant in Louisville. It is showing its age, including the patio and its tables, which needed a wipe down; however, the food is as good as I remember. Prices are reasonable and as good (if not better) as some casual takeout spots. Service was friendly and paced well. I appreciated not being forgotten on the patio. He also had AirPods in, which shouldn't be allowed if you're interacting with the public (in my opinion). Grape Leaf is a place I return to when I'm in town from California but shocked me every time when my to-go order comes out in styrofoam (which is illegal in California). Styrofoam is a major source of pollution, doesn't biodegrade, and poses human health risks due to its chemical components, breaks down into microplastics, contaminates water sources, and can be ingested by marine animals. Its production and incineration release harmful chemicals like styrene and benzene into the air. It's also difficult to recycle properly. I hope to see my old favorites evolve into new favorites. read more

I LOVE the grape leaf. Their Fatoush salad dressing is out of this world. I get the salad with chicken almost every time I'm in town. They make their chicken perfectly. Not greasy, not dry, and amazing flavor. Their Egyptian lentil is pretty good too, but it used to be bicker which I prefer. Flavor is still phenomenal. Finally, the falafel is some of the best I've had. A lil kick which changes the whole thing. Not a fan of their tzatziki. I find Greek as opposed to Mediterranean/Lebanese make it better. Kafta is also really really good. I also recommend the mushroom appetizer and the chicken Galaba. I don't get it often cause it's a lil greasy (like a Mediterranean stir fry), but it's really really good!!! Toledo has a LOT of Lebanese food, but I ALWAYS find grape leaf is a step above the rest. Ordered carry-out from The Grape Leaf last night. We ordered right at dinner time and the wait was only 20 minutes! We ordered the meza sampler with hummus, baba ganoush and spanakopita. They provided a lot of pita bread and the dips were delicious. There were two spanakopita and they were crispy. For our entrees we ordered the beef and lamb gyro. The Gyro was stuffed full with meat, tomatoes, lettuce and tzatziki sauce. It came with two sides and we had the Greek salad and lentil rice. The salad had a bite to it and it was delicious. My experience here was awful. I had made a reservation weeks before for 8 people and then called later to check in and they said that they never wrote down the reservation. When we got there, the server sighed when told that his party of 8 had arrived. The service was awful the entire time. We waited genuinely an hour just to get our drinks which was just soda and water. When the food got there after an hour and a half, all of the sides were missing and many of the orders were not made right. We had to ask multiple times to get our sides and I had to ask multiple times just to get a water. This was a terrible experience. read more

Floors had food everywhere. multiple tables left with dirty dishes on them the entire time we were there. Our server was on his phone half the time and very inattentive. Tried out this place on a weeknight as a friend recommended it, and it was almost completely empty when we entered in at 6PM. We tried chicken kabob and chicken sumac. I'd recommend the sumac but not the kabob as it's dry and not worth the price tag. Their sauce was really good though. Chicken sumac had tons of portion and was delicious with side of black beans + saffron rice. The food took awhile to come out, which wasn't great but it felt like a one and done place. Ended up walking past this place, and giving it a try. As a Mediterranean virgin I was skeptical. It's a pretty nice place. Definitely $$ at least. Most everything was $13 or more. Got the Shawarma Sandwich that was basically like a Mediterranean burrito. The tortilla was super good. No idea how they make it flavorful, and I got chicken as the meat. There were vegetables and tomatoes, and a special sauce, kind of like a thicker vinaigrette. It was pretty good. Worth a try for my first time eating Mediterranean. My friends got the roasted lamb which they said was great and flavorful. The sides were fresh and good too. The cous cous was something you don't normally see in typical menus, and it was delicious and super healthy tasting. The rice and lentils were good as well. Overall, I wasn't dissatisfied and it was super filling. You get what you pay for, and the atmosphere was very simple and chill. Warm tones with a view of the street. I've had some really wonderful Mediterranean food in my travels so it had to live up to a lot, and I just found it to be mainstream good. Pros? The hummus and babagenoush were good Serving sizes seemed generous I enjoyed the dressing for the greek salad Cons? The lamb/beef in the gyro was very under seasoned and also (soft?) for lack of better words... I prefer a little crisp to my meat so it adds texture to the soft pita I found the pita bread to be a bit stale although they certainly provided plenty of it Overall it was a pretty expensive tab for a to go order with food that didn't really wow me in any way... I've been slowly checking out Mediterranean restaurants in Louisville since I moved here, and though I haven't been to them all, The Grape Leaf is my favorite so far. I love love love their hummus! I usually get a hummus appetizer and the chicken kabobs and saffron rice. This sounds odd for a Mediterranean restaurant but they also have fantastic fries, like, maybe top 5 in the city. They are seasoned and crispy and they give you a ton. I always leave The Grape Leaf full and with leftovers. I most recently picked up lunch takeout. The second member of our party arrived and asked for the drink menu. The restaurant doesn't serve alcohol. I had looked at the menu online but didn't put two and two together that there wasn't a drink menu. I ordered the chicken shawarma wrap with a salad and fries. The lemonade was delicious and not overly sweet. The house salad was ok but seemed to be overwhelmed with cucumbers and not much lettuce. The wrap was....ok. The chicken was slightly rubbery and maybe over cooked. The fries were so good. They had a good crunch to them. The ranch dressing seemed to be house made. It had a good tang to it. Our server was ok. She kept tabs on our table and made sure drinks stayed full but that was about the extent. Overall, the meal was ok. The fries were the best part. Everything we sampled here was excellent: Turkish coffee, omelet, vegetable biryani (with a generous side of Greek salad) and falafel appetizer. The staff provided comfortable service and knew the menu. The biryani flavor danced on the palate and the omelet was piping hot. The portions were a good size. Their Stuffed Grape Leaves are amazingly good! If I lived in the area, I would probably order party trays full of their Stuffed Grape Leaves for social gatherings.
