This has such an awesome ambiance: quiet, trendy, and modern. It is a coffee and wine bar where one can study or read a book. What's great is people don't come here to chat. I like finding coffee shops that are both quiet and ones where it's more normal to talk. But what is often most challenging is finding a quiet one. I just ordered the gun powder green tea and was given a tea kennel and cup. There's free refills too on the hot tea, which is nice. I saw they also have a menu which is nice to have in case you're there all day. They also have almond and coconut milk!!! The only negative complaint I have is the staff isn't overly attentive when a customer is waiting in line. When I came in to order they looked at me and then continued to finish their conversation first. Same thing happened when I needed a refill. I felt like I was putting them at an inconvenience. Every time I visit Tucson from Phoenix I make a point to stop at my favorite coffee shop! Nikki in the bakery is the warmest and most amazing person. She makes every experience better. Unfortunately, today (3/2) she was not here, however, Sam and Max running the show were equally as amazing. They had just dealt with an absurd and extremely hostile older white man who not only treated the employees awful but cut me off mid-order for no reason. Then, the guy went on to say he was texting the owner, which if his friends treat his amazing staff the way he was, then I'd suggest new friends. The team handled it very well and recovered the cafe experience for all of us. I'll definitely return but felt the team here today was overly deserving of a 5 star review. read more

I came here after seeing the great reviews on here and pictures of the inside (I'm a sucker for lofts). Wifi is solid, there is ample workspace and downstairs has plenty of outlets, and in the daytime, at least, the environment is very work and study friendly. They have floor to ceiling windows, and they're right on a busy street corner, which makes for good people watching! Music is calm and very coffeehouse-y, and the staff is outstanding! The Dirty Chai (Iced) was a home run!!! I got it with Almond Milk and it was just fantastic. The strawberry lemonade was very good, and I really liked the Beet & Goat Cheese panini that came with carrots and tomatoes. Would definitely spend workdays here if I lived in the area!! read more

Choices range from biscuits and gravy to burgers, and almost anything on their menu can be prepared vegan. They also serve a good selection of beer and wine. I tried their homemade coconut cashew bar with my coffee, which was simple but incredibly delicious and satisfying. Brandon was a great barista and a really friendly guy! He makes a fantastic espresso and was happy to make suggestions for my visit to Tucson. All credit cards accepted. This place is ok. As far as coffee places downtown go it is not the best. I've only been a couple of times. The first time was to grab a coffee to go and some breakfast. I ordered the house coffee, now I love me a strong cup of coffee but there is a fine line between strong and bitter. This was the latter for me. As for my breakfast, I grabbed one of the granola and yogurt parfaits. It was what I thought just a berry one but there were bananas in it as well. No where did it indicate that there were bananas in it. I cannot eat bananas. So there was $4 down the drain and no breakfast for me. Everyone has been nice when I have gone in there, its just not for me. read more

They make really good coffee that is made fresh to order. Meaning they don't have a big batch of coffee sitting there all day. They grind the beans after you order, and you can taste the difference. Another plus is the price point for the whole menu, which I feel is a fair price for what you're getting. The atmosphere is nice and you can have small group meetings here no problem. I only gave them 4 stars because they don't have any protein on the menu, not even fish, or faux meat even. They do have an egg sandwich, but the eggs are from Sterns, which isn't that enticing. Other factors that make it 4 stars are: the seats are not very comfortable, parking is not convenient if your in a car, and it can take a long time to get your order. read more

Stopped in and got an Azteca Mocha (definitely recommend). Great atmosphere, workers were nice and had a great view of downtown.

I def like to think of myself and my husband as coffee shop connoisseurs....we visit as many coffee shops humanely possible wherever we go. Luckily, Cafe Luce is local to us!! Their coffee is delicious and roasted "in house" (not this house but a different location). The staff was helpful and friendly. I even got my iced caramel latte on the "healthier" side by ask for it with half sugar free vanilla, and it was still really tasty. Their espresso tastes really smooth and creamy, unlike other places that can taste burnt or bitter. Parking isn't much fun around there. Especially on Saturdays, when there are a lot of parking spaces that are blocked off. It's definitely worth it though and there is a parking garage nearby. read more

Really great lattes and kind staff. They didn't have a London fog latte on the menu, but they made one for me when I asked and it was fantastic. Good lemon bars and Brownies too. I haven't tried their booze selection yet, but they have a decent little drink menu going on. The space is nice and has gender neutral, clean restrooms. The main floor is accessible but the bathrooms are in a narrow hallway that might be hard to navigate in a wheelchair. I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for a café and sandwich at reasonable prices downtown. read more

While in Tucson for a meeting, I came across this really cool coffee shop in downtown. You walk in and right away you are greeted from across the room. There is a really nice aroma of coffee and scones as you walk in. This seem to be the perfect place to come enjoy coffee while you study/prep. If I come back to Tucson, I ll be here again. Just plain awesome. Little ladies slinging coffee/tea beverages with a passion for vintage ware and remembering your name. The Blue Bottle Coffee speaks for itself, but they razzle dazzle it up by serving it in cute mason jars (when dining in). They also have a rotating selection of iced brewed teas that you can try if you prefer. In addition to being an adorable coffee shop with free wifi and tons of outlets, they also have light fare (cheese replaces meat as the star of the sandwiches) and beer and wine, so you can eat, drink, and be merry all at the same time. A little pricey for what I'm used to, but I suppose it is in downtown Tucson. I've sipped a few of my friends' drinks, they love the super gingery chai and chai lattes, but I've only ever had the lemonade myself (served in a jar, hipster paradise!). The decor in sparkroot is very cute and simplistic. Unfortunately, the interior is not suited for large groups of people like most cafes :/, and many of the smaller tables and seatings are stylishly cute but functionally awkward. A second time I went in, we were starving and went in during happy hour. Their happy hour features half-price sandwiches and beer. I had their #8, and the artichoke hummus was different but delicious! While staring at the sandwich menu, I said to my friend "I'm going to be hungry in like 1-2 hours..." but NO, their vegetarian sandwiches are surprisingly very filling. Great coffee shop in the recently-revamped downtown Tucson. Open space with high ceilings, seating areas upstairs and downstairs, loads of natural light pouring in through gigantic windows. Gorgeous. The coffee is fantastic, too. I always stop in with my one year old to grab an iced almond milk latte before heading over to the Tucson Children's Museum. Sparkroot is surprisingly child-friendly, which is lovely. The staff is not the least bit pretentious towards anyone...including the little ones. There is also a child-sized table for parents to enjoy the vegetarian/vegan-friendly treats at with their babes. Love this place! read more

" I can't justify paying $5 for some coffee in my sugar!" I found this place using my handy dandy yelp app and was very disappointed. The place was crowded but very quiet - like a library. I asked for an iced coffee and got a Nola. It was so sugary my teeth hurt! I let the ice water it down but it was still too sweet. The staff wasn't perky - don't even think I got a half smile. I just left this fabulous place and it is pretty awesome! It is a coffee shop that also sells beer and wine, with a loft, in Downtown Tucson. It does not get any better. The food is great also! I had a #6 pressed cheese sandwich (fresh mozzerella, tomato, fresh basil) and a ginger seltzer. The sandwich was crispy on the outside, hot and fresh on the inside. The melted cheese was so good! The seltzer was tasty and refreshing. I could definitely do that combo again. I would recommend this place to anyone, as the service is also very good. I only wish the table were a little bigger. read more

This would be 5/5 if they purchased more comfortable seats. I hate sitting in here, which sucks.... because I REALLY REALLY like this place. Super good coffee. I've been told that their baristas need 5+ years of experience, which means that anyone working here wants to serve coffee for a career. Lovely and eclectic beer and wine selection. (And maybe booze??? I've never looked....) The adventurous brother always orders a funky beer and I get a taste, and I've never left the safety of the red wine menu because I've never been the slightest bit disappointed. YUMMY and fresh food made by someone with several face piercings. Or maybe face tattoos. Whatever the flavor of body mutilation that evening, all the chefs here are fans of food preparation. I also like that the over-education of literally the entire staff doesn't lead to snobbiness. When you see Sparkroot downtown now, it just calls out "come on in." Once inside, you see why. The atmosphere of the place definitely gives a feel of a place that is misplaced in Tucson, but as we have seen downtown lately, these are the best places. There are two levels and while it doesn't seem to look much like a great study space, there always seem to be students here. On my last stop, I only dropped in for a vanilla latte, but turns out they don't use any of the traditional coffee house syrups and only offer an organic agave syrup for any flavoring on coffee. While I'm happy that we're all moving into a healthier diet these days, the way that it was presented was very pretentious and they made me feel like I was a bad person for asking for a flavor. The latte itself was very well prepared and tasted great. Although I think they try too hard to be hip here, the space itself feels great and I look forward to see how they help advance the new growth downtown. read more

I haven't been able to put my finger on it, but something about this place makes me feel comfortable, relaxed, and productive. In one word, I would say it is multifaceted. For example, you can come here to study over a high-quality caffeinated beverage OR you can meet up to converse with a friend over a panini and glass of wine. Everything I have tried thus far (paninis and quinoa salad) has been really yummy and relatively guilt free. The menu is also much more diverse than your standard cafe. Another great aspect of Sparkroot is their selection of beer and wine. The micro-brew lover will assuredly fine a top notch beer at a decent price (however, I wouldn't use the word "cheap") and the wine-lover will be relieved to see that every selection of wine is $5 flat. While some have been critical of the "trendy" decor of this place, I really love it. There is some serious local art to gawk at as well as plenty of window seats that are ideal for people watching on Congress. What a great addition to downtown Tucson! read more

By far one of the very best independently owned and operated coffee shops in Tucson and they've been a staple for well over a decade with three different locations; one downtown on Congress and 5th, one at Park and University, and finally one on North Campbell and Limberlost. Each of the shops has their own strengths and weaknesses. If you want a full-service light breakfast, lunch, and dinner or pastries, the downtown one is best and it has the largest floor space and seating by far of any of them. It also stays open the latest, until 9 pm. It's good for studying, holding meetings, doing work on your laptop, or just plain hanging out. Staff and service are usually top-notch and friendly. The primary weakness is that the place has a high vaulting ceiling that makes it difficult for the staff to clean the dust off the big fan. The downtown location also occasionally attracts transients to the place. Most of the tables are fixed in location, you can't move them and if you're on a laptop and trying to eat and drink, the small size of the typical table in the downstairs area is far too small and forces you to have to do a lot of juggling to make it all work, and it makes large group sessions harder. Especially since the only large table is in the upstairs level and it often is occupied. Finally, there are few gluten-free options in the menu. The University location is smaller but cozy, doesn't offer much beyond good coffee, tea, and pastries with few gluten-free options. Seating is reasonable here, most tables can be moved if you need to do a meeting for work or study. Staff is friendly and capable and the place is keep clean. The Campbell location is much like the University one, few food options, mostly baked pastries, no gluten free options, and it is the smallest of the three. But it is still a very nice location, with lots of seating for its size, the tables can be moved, and there are plenty of outlets to plug a laptop or other device into for study and work. As always, the staff is usually pretty good. read more

Sparkroot brings a big city feel to Congress street. From the moment you walk into this beautiful place you will know that everything is going to be of quality. This seems to be the new "it" place downtown. It's a place to work with a cup coffee and attentive staff or a place to hang out for hours with a glass of wine and a good friend. I love everything about this place, there is so much attention to detail, even the bathroom is an experience! Sparkroot is where all the cool kids hang out! So, I am a full-fledged coffee snob, and whenever I travel I seek out a city's best. When I asked my hotel's clerk (Hotel Congress) where to get a great cup of coffee, I was so excited to learn that this place was just around the corner. It's by far one of my favorite coffee shops I've ever been to, and the fine people of Tucson are fortunate to have it. I hope they appreciate it. First things first, the coffee is legit! They brew up Blue Bottle, which isn't my FAVORITE coffee of all time, but it's definitely more than serviceable. What I especially liked was their presentation. Pour-overs in one giant mug is just so much more efficient than all of these places that give you a teeny little cup and then a little pot to keep refilling with. The coffee stayed hot longer and I didn't have to junk up my table with extra dishes. The atmosphere, however, is what sells me on Sparkroot. This two level shop is at once minimalist and cozy. Whoever designed the interior did a stellar job. They have ample seating for both individuals and groups. Indoor bike racks to keep track of your ride, and a wonderful amount of natural light, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. On my two visits, the music was retro girl groups (50s and 60s) and just gave the entire space an undeniably cool feeling. As I said, I am a huge fan of this shop. If it was in Kansas City, it would be my new go-to shop. I wish them a ton of success! read more

I've been a long time fan of Sparkroot, but recently my experience here has been worse and worse. What used to be my favorite coffee in Tucson has just turned into overly sweet, coffee-flavored milk. They used to house make their vanilla and hazelnut syrups, but they switched to a generic brand, which you can easily taste. The only redeeming factor for Sparkroot is the atmosphere. If you're looking for good coffee and a good atmosphere in the downtown area, go to Cartel just right around the corner. Same price for coffee, but ten times better. read more

I have never had a need for coffee beyond the caffeine burst it gives...until SPARKROOT. This is my "go-to" place in the Downtown area. I don't know what it is about the ultra-fabulous pour-over coffee that brings me back time and again. There are so many goodies on the menu, as well: quinoa & kale salad, yummy "adult cheese sandwiches" (try the #1 gruyere, arugula, & housemade mustard), "yummus," and more. I also love the whole grain toast with eggs and smoked paprika and the fritatta (served only on the weekends) for breakfast. Sparkroot's staff is friendly, and it's a great place to go Downtown "where everybody knows your name." I got hooked on the coffee, but they also offer wine & beer...a nice twist. After reading reviews and hearing some good buzz, I decided to hold a small meeting here for an organization I am in. I walked in and definitely liked the vibe. The order station and where the menu on the wall is can lead to some confusion, but the employees were very welcoming and helped through the ordering. And I know this is totally geeky, but I love the ordering computer. They flip towards you and allow you to select your tip and authorize the purchase, and choose whether you want a receipt. It was cool. The staff recommended a few drinks (FYI - they do a drink with chicory (sp?) and I remember someone on Yelp asking about that). Anyway, there are no blended drinks here which makes me happy. Its all about the coffee... and wine... and beer... and food. I had an iced latte because it is still hot as hell out there. It was wonderful. Smooth and rich. Everything it should be. My group and I sat upstairs and enjoyed watching the storm roll through downtown as we held our meeting. I really like this place and cannot wait to go back and try the food. And since they carry a Pinot Noir from Oregon, my favorite, I will back for the wine. This has a pretty good atmosphere, kind of a hip feeling going on. You can sit upstairs or at a wooden table looking out onto Congress. Wonderful for people watching. Cozy chairs, and free wi-fi. The cafe au lait my friend and I had were nothing special. It was good, but not great. It wasn't hot enough for my tastes although she likes it at that temperature for sipping. It was served in glass mugs which is great to see the texture and foam. It was good, but also a bit pricey at $3.50. Not outrageous, just wasn't that big a mug. It's trendy, and tries hard to be so; and I am not sure that's a good thing. The servers were cute and wore aprons. They do have beer in bottles and funky sandwiches at a decent price. This coffee is the famous "Blue Bottle." It had a strong kick and I felt the caffeine and some chicory in it. Would I go back? Possibly, if I'm around the area. Would I go out of my way to go there? Since moving downtown, Sparkroot has become my first stop before heading into work. I have been on an iced coffee kick and the NOLA fits the bill. Its slightly sweet, slightly creamy (hemp milk!) and has chicory and blue bottle coffee. The staff is super friendly and I love that they wear retro aprons. The alcohol and food selection is quite nice as well, I've tasted the organic pale ale and the New Zealand wines as well as the baked kale chips, which are delicious. I enjoy the atmosphere here way better than a corporate Starbucks. The coffee is really tasty and I would get the iced chai on the daily if I lived close by! They have almond or soy milk alternatives (love)!! They have bench-like seats and behind each one is a cushion you can remove from behind you and sit on it and not many people realize this.
