I feel like Caffe Luce gave us a big warm hug as soon as we walked in. This place has a very neat atmosphere with lots of seating, even a little loft area. We ordered some breakfast sandwiches: my wife got the ham and egg and I got the "Dave". Talk about flavor! There was some kind of spread on the Dave that kept making me "mmmm". Oh Sparkroot, my favorite coffee shop in Tucson. Modern industrial chic meets chill hipster vibe. Serving up coffee and espresso products with beans roasted by my favorite coffee roaster: nationally-renowned Blue Bottle. Ari Shapiro, the brainchild of equally notable establishments Xoom Juice, Falora, and Sidecar, has hit a home run with this place. Coming here is like stepping into an upscale coffee house you'd find in the likes of San Francisco or NYC. Incredible coffee and espresso drinks, a decent selection of tea, beer, and wine, as well as an array of healthy light snacks and meals (vegetarian only). The ambiance is also fabulous with it's modern industrial architecture. The space offers plenty of room to study, meet with friends, and view the action on Congress through their massive windows. I was bummed I couldn't go to Sparkroot the day they opened. But, hey, I had something to look forward to on humpday. There's nothing like the promise of caffeine to get me giddy. The coffee was great. I liked the fact that the my mocha was not sweetened (as some mocha syrups are). They take pride in not using syrups, per their facebook page. Good idea. It was creamy, delicious, everything a mocha should be. And if you need some sweetness, go for the vegan truffles. Chocolatey goodness. I foresee getting these each time I'm here. The sandwich was great as well. There's no use for meat when the cheese and bread are as delicious as the ones served at Sparkroot. The sandwiches are nice and simple, but the ingredients are great and stand out on their own. I had the welch cheddar with chives on ciabatta. Absolutely no complaints. The place itself is awesome. I couldn't stop admiring the weathered red wood. It was gorgeous and the fact that it was reclaimed makes it so much cooler. On Zocalo magazine, the owner of Sparkroot mentioned how hard it is to get reclaimed wood. Such a shame, My only complaint so far is that the tables at Sparkroot are very small and narrow. This is not exactly conductive to comfortably getting work done while drinking espresso but definitely will not prevent me from visiting again. read more

There are so many Caffe Luce's in Tucson it's getting hard to keep track (okay so there's only 3 I think... but still). I decided on a whim to check out the downtown location located on Congress, next to Hub Creamery. I had been hesitant in the past due to the nature of downtown parking, but arriving at around 3PM in the afternoon, I was able to find street parking just outside of it and was more than happy to pay the $2 parking meter for 2 hours (until 5PM, when parking is free). While I loved the old coffee shop before Luce (Sparkroot, for those of you who remember), but I was not at all disappointed with the replacement. The interior is gorgeous. I'm not an architectural or interior design pro, but (excuse my slang), the VIBES were impeccable. I was getting a mid-century modern feel almost, but with an industrial twist given the metal nature of the building. When you walk in, you're greeted with the smell of freshly baked pastries and other baked goods, which they consistently are making throughout the entire business day. There's plenty of seating on the ground level, but what I was drawn to instantly was the upper deck of Luce, featuring a small selection of 1-2 person seating. Overhead are light fixtures that look like wooden cubes suspended by black wire. The chairs have an Eames-feel to them, and the wooden table have a (bootleg) Ponti aesthetic to them (did I mention mid-century modern?). I ordered an Americano, and as with their other location on River/Campbell, I was happy with the coffee. I unfortunately did not try any of the baked goods or food, but it was seriously tempting. I cannot stress how great of an atmosphere I had at Luce. At the end of the day, it's added to my long and growing (pause) list of fantastic Tucson coffee shops. read more

Only three setbacks that I can see: 1. The wine selection is quite skimpy. 2. The seating isn't the greatest. 3. The place closes relatively early for downtown. With that out of the way, let's get to business. This place has such personality. It's the perfect vibe downtown needs. Seriously? Seriously. The feel is open air here -- the tall ceiling is immaculate. It's the perfect spot for reading, writing and contemplating (yes, I'm looking at you intellectual types). The lovely decor and artistic staples help set the mood, as does the dim lighting after nightfall. It's could be a cute place for a casual date. It is not at all romantic. Not even with the dim lighting. That's a good thing. It's true and has the feel of authenticity. I mean, come on. When two of the folks on staff rush outside JUST to check out the amazing rainbow overhead you have to smile and feel like you are in a good space. This may be the place you go on a third date -- nice and casual enough without being too, too stiff. And not so romantic that you feel uncomfortable about the surrounding ambiance. It's just right for casual get-to-know-you conversation. And -- what do you know! Within walking distance of some downtown restaurants and bars. It's also a fantastic place for studying, especially during the daytime hours. And kale chips -- what?! They are awesome folks. Awesome! The right amount of salt, the right amount of crunch. I don't care what you are doing. Whether you are there for a quick visit, an intermission before going out dancing, a study session or a bottle of beer, order the kale chips. Finally a place to spend my federation credits. I had heard about companies using iPads as cash registers but this is the 1st time I interacted with one. On the iPad it gives you tip options I think that's nice just in case you forget. I love the decor too. Behind the food prep area is a sign that reads Congress & 5th posted on "subway" tile. I know if you've been in some of the subways around the country, the thought of your food being prepared there might not sound palatable but you can't miss with this vegetarian menu. I heard people ordering coffee and they sounded happy with the results. It was after 1pm so I had wine. I was thinking wine spritzer and they accommodated by serving a glass of wine with a jelly glass jar of made on the spot sparkling water. And a smile to boot. There's a nifty system for getting a food order from the cash register to the prep area. It's written on an old fashion order form then attached to an alligator clip hung from a trolley type line on the ceiling. Then it's Zip-lined on the magnetic orderslip delivery system. What an ultra-modern, hip place for writers and coffee fiends alike. This java joint us the only place to get the famed Blue Bottle Coffee in all of Arizona. The Pacific Rim iced tea is my all-time favorite after downing my non-fat latte. My "office" away from home offers free wi-fi, separate desks with plug outlets and group tables for meetings. The food is also incredible, I suggest the yogurt, granola & fruit or the sourdough toast with goat cheese & chives. So stoked on this place that I decided to write my review while I'm sitting here. I love it so much I don't want to leave. The feel is so comfortable and trendy with large windows open to the corner for great people watching. I enjoy the couch upstairs with the sun shining through the window to keep me warm on this overcast, rainy, Seattle-like day. The details in this place are amazing...right down the the decor in the bathrooms. I would like to have a house like this someday! I ordered their chai tea and I do believe it's my new favorite in town. The best tea I've tasted anywhere. Pure froth perfection. I literally cannot stop thinking about the soy milk lattes from here, and I'm about 700 miles from Tucson. If this was local I'd have a hard time not stopping by every day. The service was great. My son loved the vegan banana bread. But man--that latte! They actually made it extra hot as requested (coffee shops never listen to me and I'm so sick of being served lukewarm lattes!). It was really the perfect temperature. And the foam was thicccc. Basically every latte I've had since I've been comparing to the one I had here. I have been here a few times before, and have always been pleased. Most recently, I stopped in late night on a Sunday to do some studying. I was ravenous, but when I walked in the door was told that their kitchen was unfortunately closed due to flooding. I decided to stay anyway and got a cup of coffee and wandered upstairs. The coffee is always great and the service is always fantastic. I was studying upstairs at a large table and was told by a worker that it was reserved at 4:00. I easily moved to the next table over and the employee hurried back up and gave me a card for a free drink and apologized again. Great service and I'm excited to go back and read it. The sandwich was great, it was a bit of a wait but the cashier did warn us about that before placing our order, which I appreciated. The kale chips were also crispy and delicious so if you like veggies go ahead and get them. Also the wine list, although brief, was great because all glasses were $5, simplifies and lets you pick whatever sounds the best to you. I had the Velvet Devil and it was quite tasty. People seem to want one of two things in a coffee shop. Some want a place to enjoy a great cup of coffee and good eats above all else. Others will put up with mediocre coffee if the environment is great for studying or socializing. Sparkroot excels at providing a consistently good local bean to it's customers but... ...the environment however isn't the coziest and isn't the best for trying to get things done. While there's plenty of natural light and plugs to keep you connected and productive, the furniture is more trendy than functional and there aren't many areas where groups can be truly comfortable for long periods of time. All of that said, if you want a good cup of drip or espresso, Sparkroot won't disappoint. The food selection good and everything on the menu is worth the wait - there's always a wait as food service is slow given the single line cook on duty. The gluten free bread is spot on and the salads are fresh and filling. Their non-coffee fair including chai, teas, and fresh juice are also up to par. It's also one of the few places I've found where you can get flavored drinks that aren't full of processed sugar - the mocha is made in house with dark chocolate and the vanilla and chais are house made as well. Sparkroot has a great product and good artsy vibe. As someone who enjoys coffee solo or with a buddy, Sparkroot gets 5 stars from me. However, coffee shops are expected to be social environments and Sparkroot can use some improvement. 4 stars. read more

Sparkroot is yet another excellent establishment that has added to Tucson's downtown! I really wasn't sure what to expect, hadn't had a chance to survey the menu and simply went in not having a clue. Generally, not how I operate. Tracy S invited me to dinner and since I was running late and starving, she went ahead and ordered for us. We had the bruschetta, artichoke hummus and a pressed cheese sammie. I will start with my favorites... the artichoke hummus was so flavorful and perfect to pair with a nice glass of wine. It is on my must order again list! Next item I thought was perfection- our pressed cheese sandwich with brie, apple slices and walnuts. I want more!! I want to thank Ari Shapiro for having the concept of pressed cheese sandwiches! I'm a fan! So many excellent combinations to choose from! Ari nailed the concept of smoothies with Xoom Juice and now has delighted me with these sammies!! My non-favorite of the night was the bruschetta, which was adequate. It was fresh but I didn't love the bread. I suppose I'm old school with bruschetta and like the french bread version. What I loved... Sparkroot's ambiance is hip and has this groovy vibe. The music that I couldn't seem to stop Shazam- ing. They were playing such super cool music, i.e. Horse Feathers, White Hinterland, Youth Lagoon, etc. So in a nutshell, I loved the food, the ambiance, the view of downtown from where we sat, the music, my glass of wine, and Tracy S for the suggestion and ordering us such a yummy meal! 5 for the unique, local flavor of the decor: I loved the barrel stools, blue bottle vases, and cozy nooks great for reading a book. I love the drink concept and menu choices from the beet popsicles to the variety of veggie paninis. 4 for the helpful and friendly barista who was an expert in latte art, which means the frothed milk was just right. 4 also for the ginger-based chai which was spicy and flavorful. Only 1 for the NOLA cold brewed coffee. It was extremely bitter. I could not doctor it up with sugar, more cream or flavor. Sparkroot is a mega cutie cafe in downtown Tucson - an area I tend to not spend a ton of time in when visiting. I had previously looked into this place, the set up and menu seemed fun, and as we were exploring the area, it became the place where we decided to lunch. We walked in around noon on a Monday, and it was fairly quiet inside. We immediately went to the front to take a look at the very....disheveled menu. A ton of items were covered over by tape. To the point where new menus should really just be provided. It seemed like a set up you'd find in a very divey spot, but the overall atmosphere at Sparkroot was welcoming and interesting. After ordering, I ran up the stairs to the second story of this coffee cafe, and we had the level to ourselves. The three of us went with the pressed sandwich options. It's 100% impossible for me to resist caramelized onions and arugula, so I had to go with the first option on the sandwich menu: Gruyere, caramelized onions, arugula and spicy mustard. My other two eating companions went with the #2: cheddar, chives, avocado, and cucumber & #5: mozzarella, tomato, basil and balsamic. I thought the price slightly steep for a sandwich priced at $7.75 (no side included) but the overall design and taste of the sandwiches made it worth it. I tried all three, and though I loved mine the most, the #2 sandwich was my second favorite. While here, I also decided I needed to try an alcoholic coffee drink while in a regular coffee shop. This is something I could never experience in my hometown (without being in a proper bar) so it was a necessity. I went with the Haze 46 - coffee, bourbon and hazelnut flavoring all served in a mason jar (of course). It was enjoyable, though I know if I were to frequent this establishment, it would be a beverage I'd rarely get, though the option is well appreciated. Overall, I enjoyed Sparkroot. The feeling inside was good, the barista was freaking adorable, and the sandwiches were tasty... though I'm still turned off by the state in which we found the (only apparent) menu. However, it'd definitely be a fun option to study in if I ever need such a spot in my future visits! read more

I went on a private coffee tour of Tucson, meaning a tour with just me and led by me. My cousin liked this place so i decided to check it out. It's an interesting two story place with friendly staff. I ordered a cappuccino and found a comfortable seat and place to plug my phone in. The drink was pretty good, not my favorite on the trip, but good and it had a more unique atmosphere. They also gave a me a great breakfast suggestion to try the Congress Hotel next door. Oh and some people call this place Sparkroot. My credit card bill showed Sparkroot. read more

Pros: - Super clean (including the bathrooms) - Fast, free, consistent WiFi - Free water dispenser - Really laid back environment. The staff are friendly and not pushy (I can come in and study without ordering right away) - Lots of other students studying, so I don't feel weird spending literally all day there (which I have. several times. thanks grad school) - Punch card for the 11th drink free!!!!! The cards sit at the counter but they don't seem to really advertise this so make sure to ask - Good, low volume music - You can take breaks to watch people and their dogs wander up and down Congress - Good pressed sandwiches, including the egg/potato & apple/brie Cons: - Lighting gets a little dim as the sun goes down - Generally, outlets are very accessible. However, if you come in a group of 3 or more, you may not be able to find seats together with outlets for everyone. - It can get a little busy but in general is never too noisy. Solid coffee! Some of the best lattes and chais I have ever inhaled have been from Sparkroot/Cafe Luce. The food is also pretty amazing, it's all vegetarian, with vegan options! I am obsessed with their sweet potato tacos right now. So pretty much everything you can eat/drink there is a good choice. The space is cool too, a fun downtown area right next to Congress. Inside you can occasionally find a table or seat, but it can get pretty full! They offer WiFi so it's an ideal study/work spot. If you choose your coffee shops based on aesthetic, this place should be on your list. Now for the coffee *surprise surprise* it's really good! Sparkroot is definitely one of my favorite coffee shops in Tucson, and I've been to a pretty solid amount of them by now. As a frequent visitor of San Francisco, I'm obsessed with Blue Bottle Coffee, and I was so excited to find out that I could get my hands on some here in Tucson! The environment is super modern, with impossibly-high ceilings, giant windows, and a splash of hipsterness (hipsterdom? hipsterity?) in terms of decor. There are always people working, studying, reading, etc. when I come here, and I can understand why. It's a cool place to just hang out, and I love that it's downtown. Unfortunately, I've never eaten here, so I can't say much about the food -other than it looks amazing, based on the dishes I've creeped on as they're being served to other customers. But the coffee. Oh the coffee. My personal favorite is the vanilla latte, which is served with a vanilla syrup that they make in-house. It's a little sweeter than I originally anticipated, but so delicious! Other favorites are the normal latte and the pacific rim tea if I'm not feelin' like coffee. Everything I've ever had here has been amazing. My only gripe about Sparkroot is that it's a smidgen pricey based on the size of drink that you're getting ($4 for a latte and $3 for a tea). But for the quality, I'm usually willing to pay it -I figure it's about the same price as your typical Starbucks, but it tastes infinitely better. But it's about to become a serious problem for my wallet; I'm about to start a job just around the corner, which I'm sure will lead to me becoming a regular here! read more

If you're wanting traditional biscuits and gravy, this isn't it! These are made with a mushroom gravy that would also be amazing as a mushroom stroganoff. Happened upon Sparkroot by accident while trolling around downtown Tucson. I was so excited to see that they had gluten free bread! Hoorah! I ordered the GF bread, toasted, topped with fresh goat cheese & chives. The portion was generous and the food couldn't not have been more delicious. I'm pretty critical of GF products and this bread was crispy, and had amazing flavor. The decor is steampunk and fun to be immersed in. I spend 90% of my time studying or working on school-related extracurricular activities. So when a place can make me enjoy the fact that I have to study this much, it's a wonderful place. I have been coming here once or twice a week during the day throughout the semester, and I love the environment, the food, the coffee - everything! It has to be the best study/hang out environment in Tucson. There are fresh flowers on the bar, your iced coffee is served in a mason jar, the music selection is great... Just always perfect. This little coffee shop and cafe serves very hip espresso and dishes. They thrive on perfection in presentation, I don't think I've ever been disappointed with a plate they deliver. Espresso comes with a cute little brown cup and saucer, and they have stirring spoons for you to use instead of straws or wood sticks. Not a single piece of fruit on my oatmeal has ever looked less than a perfect specimen of perfect strawberry flesh. The pressed sandwiches are always crafted with care and the panini grill stripes perfect in a natural way, not a smashed to a char, but delicately embedded in the bread. I'm only sad because they no longer have a shot of sparkling water with your espresso, it got pulled in lieu of Perrier by the bottle, but the complementary water is always cold and tastes clean. Try it, or walk down to Broadway and try your luck at Cartel Coffee. I think you will prefer the location of Sparkroot. read more
