This place has a great vibe going for itself. It's too small to actually study but a great place to catch up with a friend or just enjoy a nice quiet cup of coffee. The service was great and the two baristas were very friendly. The espresso is great and they have some yummy lattes. Definitely recommend trying! read more

Service was very poor. The manager walked right past our table to take another tables order who came in 10 minutes after we were seated. The waiter that decided to try help really was not of much help; he brought two waters to a table of five. Then decided to say "I'm off work". What kind of establishment are you Managing? The ambiance was never set, therefore how can I even review the food when we couldn't even get decent service. read more

Amazing specialty drink!! I happened to be in the area on a rainy day and decided to try a new place. The barista was super friendly and recommended the supposed staff favorite: Al Pepe Cappuccino. It's made with honey, cinnamon and black pepper. Sounds weird, I know, but I'm obsessed! I normally don't order sweet drinks but I was in the mood for a bit of a treat and this was it. Not too sweet, and the black pepper balanced it out, giving it a nice unique kick (kind of like a spicy chai), without overpowering the other flavors. I enjoyed every last sip and if I could afford the lavish lifestyle, I would get this on the regular. read more

Nice service. They use Oatly oat milk and the iced latte is good! But sawada coffee we liked more! If you crave a food coffee and are close by. This is it otherwise If you are on a coffee crawl id prefer sawada coffee for iced latte :) read more

I had the Honey Oat Latte and it was delicious! The perfect amount of honey so it wasn't too sweet, the oat milk was thick and creamy, and the espresso was delicious. I love that they have a loyalty card for both drinks and beans. Cute and small. read more

Caffe Umbria is a solid, little coffee shop in Chicago. In case anyone is wondering, all of their selections are blends, i.e. no single origins. They don't have much seating within the shop, 4 seats at a high top. They do have limited outdoor seating and additional indoor seating that you can take advantage of in the hallway next outside the door, complete with about six tables and two chairs per table. That being said, this coffee shop is probably more of a grab and go type of shop, as opposed to on where you can crank out some work, catch up with friends, or read a book. I ordered a pourover of their Leone blend, which has beans from South America and I think Ethiopia (might need a fact check on that). It's a pretty solid cup of coffee, and the service was fast and friendly. read more

Not enough seats. Visiting Chicago and like to try local coffee shops but this time I wish I'd gone to Starbucks. Very few seats and people were hogging them including a couple that had their stuff sitting on seats long before they got their drinks. Coffee was fine, but that's the easy part. read more

I cheated a little this time thru Chicago as I was in a hurry so went the shop nearest me - and it happens to be a small chain based in my hometown. Read; I already know it's good. As a connoisseur of barista beverages, I was a bit thrown off when reading the menu to find a cortado sold as a "medium"-sized beverage. I had to ask to make sure it wasn't a Starbucks-take on a cortado. Alas, it was not - a traditional 4oz espresso with 2 oz of milk but poured into a medium cup. Whew. With that said, it's the same price as their small drinks so no harm, just a wee bit of confusion. Like it's Seattle counterpart, Italian charm (not cheese) oozes from this spot with knowledgeable staff, talented baristas and classy surroundings. Don't be discouraged if you don't find seating in the main cafe section, they have another side through a door filled with tables designed to linger in the classic Italian way. It's a great spot in river north, easy to find and bonus: they have my favorite Oatly Barista Oatmilk!! read more

I am a huge matcha latte fanatic and this coffee shop didn't quite meet the mark. Typically, you get your drink in a to-go cup but I asked for a mug, which the barista didn't mind at all. As for the matcha latte, it's a 3/5 as it was quite bland and frothy which was a bit disappointing for me. It's an averagely priced matcha latte in Chicago but taste isn't quite there. However, I really like that there is a piece of chocolate to go with the drink. There isn't much seating in the shop but if you walk into the hallways, there's more seating. read more

After trying Bowtruss at 2 locations, Gaslight, intelligentsia, caffe Rom, and numerous Starbucks ... Caffe Umbria was the last stop on my caffeine tour and I wish it was my first. It was the perfect pull and the best I've had in Chicago. Also the chai latte was equally great. This tiny cafe is unassuming and had a clean aesthetic. It had a small windowed showcase of baked goods. Their small by curated selection of coffee drinks was interesting and unique compared to the usual Starbucks sugary offerings. I had the chai latte one cold afternoon and I loved the strong tea flavour that was well balanced with the strong spices and smooth milk additions. It was not sugary at all... It reminds me of some of the chai I've had in India. The cappuccino was incredibly well crafted and allowed me to have a nice conversation with the barista as he made it. Hands down the best cappuccino in Chicago. The foam is so creamy it's like heaven. The espresso pulls thru the foam to give that perfect mix of true coffee, thin and hot, with the richness of the creamy foam. This is not coffee-colored milk. This is as it should be. Get a macaroon too. Trust me. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the seating. They have six bistro tables in the foyer of the office building they are adjacent to. It's cute, but not that coffeehouse feel. If it had more seats...I'd probably never leave. read more

Solid coffee spot! Great dark, Italian roasts and friendly staff. Complimentary chocolates by the area you pick your drink up, and convenient location near river north and close to the river. I've gotten their decaf americanos both time bc every time I go it's in the afternoon and my system can't handle caffeine. I've liked them both times. They also have pretty good pastries. We tried their macarons and those were very nicely done. Just wish there were more places to sit!! Only a couple of tables and chairs inside and along the lobby next door. read more

I have been here a few times recently and enjoyed their latte (and the chocolate they provide with it) each time. Everyone is super friendly and real quick! It's creative how they've added seating in the building lobby to allow for a coffee conversation. It's not super quiet or comfortable, because of the foot traffic and temporary seating, but one of the best coffee options in an area that doesn't provide much competition. I'm a fan and back quite often! read more

This is my new favorite local coffee house. I come here a few times a week for a cafe au lait and it's perfectly done with consistently the right amount of foam. I often see people sitting near the window reading or on the computer- it's a nice place to hang out for a bit and the coffee smells are delightful. I'm so happy to now have an option other than Starbucks around the corner and I hope this cafe stays around! I asked the barista what Caffe Umbria is known for, and he said "espresso drinks." I tried a cappuccino, and now I totally understand why. Only once in my life* have I had a cappuccino this flavorful and smooth, and I'd almost convinced myself that it was a dream. The caffe is tiny, but there's additional seating in the atrium just outside the shop. I'd 100% recommend this place if you're looking for a morning (or afternoon... or early evening...) cup. *Lot 38 in Washington, DC.** **Disclaimer: I've never had a cappuccino in Italy. read more

Favorite espresso in Chicago. I knew of them From Seattle and had great doppio per andare there. Very smooth espresso unlike the IPA style espresso one can find in most shops here locally. Great menu with most Italian desired drinks. Took a group of 5 work colleagues with they all said they really enjoyed all their drinks (friends cappuccino posted). OMG this place is sooo good. Ordered a cappuccino and was very pleased. The foam had very dense bubbles and the espresso was pulled short with a sweet finish. The only bad part is that they are short on seating and it's very loud inside. The free chocolate is a nice touch. read more

**AVOID "AL" the barista. He will make you feel like answering ANY question is a hassle. He will HATE if you want to buy a bag of coffee here and ask questions about the roasts. EXTREMELY negative experience here. Very disappointed, given the high reviews touting a positive customer experience. --- After my horrible experiences at Cafe Integral, I went to Caffe Umbria. As always, I try a latte with the roast I may buy. When I asked to try 1 of 3 roasts readily available, Al said "we only make lattes with 1 specific roast, and that's what you can try." Wow. Ok. I agreed to try the designated roast. Then, I asked him to describe the other roasts. He looked at me quizzically, raised his eyebrow, and said "you want me to describe ALL our roasts?" I again said yes, to which he responded, "there's a lot." I looked at the shelf and counted, then said, "there's 6." He rolled his eyes and flippantly said, "there's actually more than that but whatever. Come over here." He can barely distinguish between the roasts. I wondered if he didn't want to explain them, because he wasn't trained to know and sell Caffe Umbria products (if that's the case, subpar training is on management, BUT being rude to customers is completely on him). He goes on to show 2 more roasts that are not on the shelf. He points out that one is his favorite. So I select that. I was stunned and felt negative about this extremely negative and rude experience. I took the roast home and tried it; it was nice and smooth. BUT I have mixed feelings on whether I should return, given the awful customer service. This is a similar rude barista issue to what I experienced at Cafe Integral. read more

Every morning there's always a long wait for this place. I never wanted to wait in the line so I just went during the afternoon. For a super small space they have a lot of drink options. They don't have a lot of seats either so it's not really a place you could sit and relax. Their chai tea lattes are delicious! I wish they had more latte options but the ones they have are really solid. For River North this is one of the best coffee places! I wish on their menu they had a description underneath of what each item contains. I noticed myself asking the server what each item was and if I came during a busy they it could be super annoying. read more

I was so happy to find this coffee house! Most places are closed or do not open by the time I am heading to work. I tried an iced latte and it was a delicious blend of coffee beans and skim milk. I ordered a cinnamon scone which was filling and paired well with my latte. I was the first customer of the day and the barista greeted me with a great welcome. I'll be back for sure!! This place reminds me of Europe. I love the coffee cups here, and their coffee too :) Great baristas. One of them ran thru the entire menu in detail for my overwhelmed friend. So kind. The space is pretty small, but cozy. It's warm inside. Yummy croissants, but unfortunately they can't heat them up :( Outdoor seating is pretty nice too! Overall, great place. Nice baristas and cute place. I would have given it more stars if it was a little cheaper. A bit on the pricier side. Usually I don't mind paying a little extra if I can study or work at the café, but there is little to no seating here, and there are no outlets. Given that they are not paying as much as competitor coffee shops for space, I believe the prices are unreasonable. read more

It's the best coffee in River North/Streeterville/Gold Coast (I've tried them all). Only rival is Ipsento and La Colombe in terms of buttery/smoothness in Chicago. Not the greatest place to hang and do work, but hey, that's how the Italians roll. The baristas have some serious frothing skills and are always friendly. For the coffee purist, this is a must see. I love this place, and cannot wait for their new location in Logan Sq2aure to open. They have very consistent strong coffee. That's it. They do offer the usual croissant and cakes but I think most of the area coffee shops purchase whole sale from the same spot, because even Damn Fine's eateries are the same. Not complaining just noting. Conclusion: I love it, and cant for for them to open up ... on Milwaukee and Armitage. Come on! Open already! read more

Probably our favorite coffee shop to visit in Chicago. Not a lot of seating, but cool place and absolutely LOVE Chris. He was so so welcoming and friendly, asked us about our trip and gave us great recommendations on different things to do during our stay. We felt like we could stay forever and never felt rushed despite the regular flow of customers. The coffee was the best we had in Chicago. read more

Lovely service, beautiful shop. We got a Med. Cappuccino and a Med Chai with 2 croissants. The almond croissant was crusty on the outside and sweet on the inside. The ham/cheese croissant had everything bagel seasoning on the top which was a bit too garlicky. It cost $20 for 4 items. read more

EVENTUALLY! A coffee shop that escapes you to Rome. A warm and inviting surroundings with handcrafted mugs and plates and the VERY BEST croissants you'll see in Chicago (as said by a guy I 'd met there) but I tasted it and fully concurred. The culture of catching espressos with buddies is common in Italy and hopefully it'll be here also in this coffee shop. Only one high top table as well as a couple bar stool seatings facing the windows so that you might need to crowd yourself in or request your java to go but please stop in. Additionally they provide you with a little square piece of dark chocolate by means of your order as well as the cost is a little more pricey then Starbucks but what's Starbucks when you've got more of the 'third wave' coffee shop. Pulled into Caffe Umbria on a slow Sunday morning and dropped about $19.50 on a double cortado and their almond croissant, plus a smoked salmon panini. The cortado was silky and well‑balanced--definitely hit the spot--and the almond croissant was flaky and not too sweet, exactly what I needed. The smoked salmon panini was solid, though the bread was a bit more dense than I'd prefer, but still tasty. The baristas were chill and knew what they were doing, giving off that laid‑back yet polished Italian‑vibe you don't see everywhere in Chicago. Only thing keeping me from five stars was the panini bread, but for the coffee game alone it's worth the trip. They will make you feel like you are intruder. RUDE! Also, the white girl who works there just walked through me without saying hi....multiple of times...I won't be coming back there, gave it my best efforts to enjoy!
