Great coffee, made lovingly. This is the family that started/owned Torrefazioni, then sold it to Starbucks. In this location (and I think one in Seattle), they still make small-batch coffee the old fashioned way, with quality controls. Honestly, I was all prepared to dislike Caffe Umbria when I walked into it's clean bright atmosphere. Brights lights, shiny metal, clean floors, a sharp dressed staff? What the!? I just know I'm not going to be able to relax here and this staff is going to have attitude! Can we go now!? But wait, a friendly welcome by a staff member, a nice fresh selection of many types of Italian sandwiches (the piadine w/mozzarella and olives hit the spot), an awesome decaf soy mocha, and a deceivingly relaxing atmosphere (bright lights usually aren't my thing unless it's summer time)? I do not know why people think so highly of this place, it is an OK place but nothing special. it really has some kind of pretentious vibes. mostly very young crowd using their laptop, I do not think they even think about what kind of food they are having, they go there just to use the laptops. it is supposed to be an authentic Italian food café, however, there is not any real Italian food item served here, even if the owner is supposedly be originally Italian. I had heard about their fresh Mozzarella cheese & prosciutto sandwiches, that they were delicious. However, I could not find them, and the sandwich I had was made with some stale cheese and tomatoes, which was tasteless. Even the coffee was not that good and the people behind the counter are not that friendly either. I might try coming back again, see if I might have a better experience next time!! read more

Ham and cheese croissant and americano were fine. No complaints there, other than being pricey. I come out of the restroom and barista dude tells me the drink was on the counter and someone took it, like it was my fault. First time here, I gave it a chance, too bougie for me. Peace. read more

I had a great afternoon of tea and reading the Turgenev book I found at Powell's. There's a great selection of teas. The atmosphere is super pleasant, the music was great, and the baristas were top notch. One of the baristas, originally from the good old Midwest I believe, even gave me advice on where to get the best men's haircut in the neighborhood. The worst experience ever. I ordered one cafe marocchino today. I was sitting by the table all the time and talking to friend. I finished about half cup of this. Suddenly, I felt there was something in my mouth, i spited it out! I saw a fly! It was literally came out from my cup! I felt so disgusting! I couldn't even look at it! My friend checked my cup, there is another fly in my cup also! By that time i almost finished my drink. I tried to calm down. I brought my cup, and I went to to counter. The coffee maker looked at my cup, and he saw the fly in my cup. He took away my cup, and said to me. It was just cocoa, not a fly!!! I asked my friend came over with the fly I just took out from my cup. This time, he had to say, okay, I guess this fly may just come from outside! There was no reason, two flies came to my cup and I didn't see any of it. Finally he said , I can give your money back which is ¥3.75. I am not asking for a 3 bucks refund! Two flies in my cup is not acceptable, and what they have been telling me is this is not their fault. I can't believe they can open a coffee shop like that! Most disappointed trip ever ever! Please be aware if you ever want to try their coffee. I wish i should take a pic before I gave them back my cup! read more

Not long ago, I was contacted by the owner of Caffe Umbria. He invited me back to discuss my experience (described in previous review) with him. We had a very nice meeting, and he is a very charming and intelligent businessman. I learned a lot about his career in the coffee business and developed a great deal of respect for his passion and hard-work. I decided to give the Caffe another try. I've been back several times since. I'm happy to say the coffee is still among the best in the city and a couple of the baristas are among the most charming. And the chef is superb. read more

I love this place. The interior is classy and modern but comfortable at the same time. The baristas are friendly and not pretentious, which is amazing because it's in the Pearl and also because a lot of places in Portland with good coffee have really rude baristas. Their iced coffee is strong and smooth and they make a mean Americano. Caffe Umbria is the perfect place to catch up with a friend over a good cup of joe! read more

Hands down coffee & desserts a 5, but the breakfast sandwich & the BLT left both my friend a lil' bit off in flavor. Something about the bread or ham in my breakfast sandwich seemed not to combine well, & my friend pulled out large globs of overly wilted lettuce with pink spots on her panini. Not sure if it was the excess of mayonnaise & mayo, but it was s sopping mess & she couldn't eat it. I know this is a horrible description of a sandwich, but I freaking love their coffee & desserts! So, with that said, this beautiful place can't warrant a 5, but a solid 4 on the pretext that I will eat food beforehand, but get my coffee & dessert & have a wonderful relaxed time with my friend here;) read more

Though this place is moderately intimidating, the latte I got was near perfect. I went when it was completely empty to escape a rainstorm so the barista totally worked with me to make it exactly how I like it! Incredibly friendly and had no problem with me just lazing in one of the big velvety chairs until the storm passed. Though its not a casual, comfy coffee shop that I would frequent, the drinks are definitely high-quality and the interior is gorgeous. read more

Was excited to try this place. Love the coffee (loved Torrefazione even more) and was happy to learn that this company was strated by the same folks as TI. The place was slick, well designed. Unfortunately, the service and food was poor. The servers were pretentious and unfriendly. i don't think their style of dress had anything to do with it. The bread for the panini I had was mealy and the cheese hadn't even melted. The coffee was good, but no way am I returning. This is Portland afterall - there's good coffee everywhere. The drip coffee here is made just right, not bitter, like a number of other Portland coffee houses. Their biscotti is really good too, delicious dipped into that coffee. I have also tried a few sandwiches and all were good. One of my favorite drinks is the double 8 oz latte, perfect. read more
