This little coffee shop is right off of Patterson and Gaskins out in the West End of Richmond, VA. It is a very homey, cozy environment with tons of books, adequate seating and a bunch of choices for paninis, salads and sandwiches. I have yet to have a panini from there as of yet but i have had coffee, latte and a few scones and they were all great. My main thing is that it's a very inviting experience, very european. When you order your drink/food they just tell you to have a seat and they'll bring it to you and you can pay before you leave. It's a very trusting way of doing business but it shows that they care about the customer which goes a long way. If you're heading to the Starbucks in the Gayton Crossing shopping center, go an extra block and try this place, you wont regret it! read more

There staff are friendly and are always willing to cater to our requests. My go to is there Chia latte as they will fill a large mug to the rim with a great drink. Had my first and last experience at this café today -- the absolute WORST customer service. The man working behind the counter was cold and unwelcoming from the second me and my friends stepped in. I ordered a regular coffee and sat with my 2 friends who hadn't decided if they wanted to place an order yet. The man approached our table and irritably asked my 2 friends if they wanted anything. They politely declined, and the visibly frustrated man stormed away. (It was a very slow day so it was not as if we were taking up space for other customers.) This place is amazing! Go.. NOW! I woke up one morning and decided i really wanted breakfast but was way too lazy to cook. I didn't want a full on brunch. Luckily i remembered reading about this place on yelp, so I had to try it out. Its a super cute coffee house, a little difficult to find if you don't know where to look. Anyways, had to start with some coffee. the hubs got the cafe aut lait and I got the dante's inferno, which is a latte with chocolate, raspberries and hot pepper. Sounds amazing... and it is! For breakfast he got a breakfast sandwich and i decided to splurge on the breakfast special with the Gorgonzola pesto sauce. OMG amazing. Let me just start off by saying the coffee has been bad every day that I've tried it and the customer service (THE OLD BALD MAN) is incredibly rude and kicks us out of the seating area everyday even though we order items every day. At my last visit, I was awkwardly asked to leave in the middle of the day by a woman who identified herself as the owner. She had gathered a group of her personal acquaintances to sit in the cafe, and they were remaining in the cafe while she turned away all other paying customers so they could have the cafe to themselves. Really neat place. Their paninis are to die for. It takes about 30 mins for them to make one, but after you try it, it does not even matter. I believe this certain Panini is called the "Genovese" it has pesto and turkey and cheese and the bread they use just really makes it. This panini is so special, it is Definetly made with love. My sister and I have been to Caffespresso two times, once in the morning and once in the evening. On our first visit (in the morning) there were two people working, a gentleman (the owner) and a young woman. The woman worked at the register and made drinks while the owner solely made drinks. The woman at the register was very friendly and she even helped us decide what dessert to order. After we paid, we were told to sit down and that our drinks would be brought to us when they were finished. We didn't speak to the man due to the fact that the woman took our order and brought us our drinks, however he seemed very friendly to his customers (presumably frequent guests). We did homework while we enjoyed our drinks and we loved the atmosphere. This was a great experience and we were excited to come back again. The sign on the door says to leave a review on yelp, this I shall do. Now for today's experience (be prepared for a long story). Today my sister and I ventured to Caffespresso a bit later, around 5:15. Now keep in mind, the website says that they close at 7:00 and Google says that they close at 6:00. This is already an issue. We knew that we wouldn't have a ton of time but we decided to go anyway because we really enjoyed our past visit. At this time of day, the shop was empty aside from one customer doing some work on her computer. When we walked in, there was no one at the register so we picked up the drink menu to decide what we wanted. Shortly after, an older man comes out from the back and says, "are you getting food?" in a very blunt manner. We informed him that we were just getting drinks and that we would like to enjoy them in the cafe. He then looks at the clock and says something along the lines of, "you do know that we close in about a half hour, right?" At 5:15, we actually had 45 minutes but we just replied with a yes and so he proceeded to take our order. Now, contrary to our first visit, after we ordered he just turned around and started making our drinks. At this point my sister and I are awkwardly standing at the register with the money while he sighs and makes the drinks. We receive our drinks, pay, and go sit down. Upon taking my seat, I pull up the restaurant hours on my phone and proceed to show it to the employee. I begin to tell him about the discrepancy in times on the website and on Google but before I can finish my sentence he sharply says, "the website is wrong. He hasn't changed it yet." Ignoring this rude remark, I asked if we had until 6:00 to finish up and he told me that we needed to be out a few minutes before 6:00 even though a customer should have until closing time to leave. In order to avoid an argument I just said okay and went back to my seat. We decided that we would begin packing our things around 5:50 and as I enjoyed my drink I began planning my review for this terrible experience. Right around 5:50, the man approaches us and with a raised voice says, "CLOSING TIME PLEASE." At least he said please I guess. He then tells us to leave our dishes on the table and with a "thank you, have a good night." we get up and leave the restaurant. Despite all of this, the coffee tasted great both times ;) read more

They have a good selection of lattes and coffee drinks; however, one thing that will keep me from returning to this establishing, is the appalling service. I stopped by Caddespresso earlier this evening to grab a quick hot brew coffee. The gentlemen that served me (older gentleman with grey hair on the sides, not the owner keep in mind) - was horrendously rude. But wait - I get it, we all have bad days right? Well this particular gentleman has been consistently rude to me, based on multiple of my visits. Furthermore, this may seem like an isolated incident to a select group of people, as I noticed (as I was sitting the the cafe, sipping on my coffee) that his vibe magically improves in front of the presence of business men and attractive women. There are times when I say 'THANK YOU' to him and my response? Nothing. Although when different groups of people modestly say 'thank you' - they will get a kind response back. So the bottomline is, the coffee is good, sure - but not good enough to keep me from returning if I am to be receiving service like this. When you walk into an establishment of this caliber and price-point, a certain level of quality and service is expected. Furthermore, it seems like a lot of the negative reviews for this place are aimed at specific people as well. Update to my previous review: I will leave the rating the same. Tried to go today to get coffee and something to eat (it opens at 7am) - got there at 7:13 and it was dark, went back by again at 7:20 - still locked up. I swear, Claudo, I am trying to give you business! But either the service is too slow, it's dirty inside, or you just didn't bother to opening on time! My title pretty much covers it. I really really want to like Caffespresso. I want to "shop local" and I certainly DONT want to support Starbucks and their nasty tasting coffee. This should be the place. However, more and more, I find I am disappointed by the excruciatingly slow service - why would the owner only have one person working during the morning shift? I stop in for coffee on the way to work and I have to wait while the poor girl makes breakfast, tends to coffee, runs the cash register, etc. The other thing that I find simply inexcusable is how dirty the place is. Is it really that hard to get a bottle of 409 and clean the filthy door, or wipe down the counters, or give the floors a real cleaning? Caffespresso is too good to have such slow service and be do unclean. I hope they will do better so I can give them the 5 star review that I would like to! read more

What a cozy little coffee shop in the West End! I've heard the name Caffespresso thrown around quite a few times lately, so when Lauri T and I decided to meet here today to talk Yelp, I was beyond thrilled. It was pretty frigid out when I entered, so perhaps the contrast of outdoor cold with the indoor warmth of the shop added to it's coziness. But either way, the couch in the back was the perfect place to increase the comfortable and welcoming feel of the café. Although the case of goodies was quite tempting, I stuck with my usual coffee with sugarfree syrup (vanilla today) and almond milk. DElish. And I loved the huge mug my cup o' joe was served in. The space itself is pretty small, with a few scattered tables and a comfy lounge area toward the back, where we sat. I could totally see myself posting up here for a few hours getting some work done when I'm in the area. If this was closer to my house, I would definitely be a regular. read more

Upon initially examining the place, I was reasonably impressed. They seemed to offer more than the average coffee house. They have Italian imported brands of foods such as capers and cookies. They seem to make many of their pastries in-house. They offer paninis made to order. Their selection of wine is strictly Italian and includes some of the more interesting varietals that Italy has to offer. I saw advertisements about events such as cooking classes that were held there. And the Dante's Paradiso latte I had would've been great if I'd been in the mood for something very sweet. (Maybe I should've stuck with a regular coffee - I thought it was interesting that their coffee beans are Northern Italian.) However, the vibe was sorely lacking. The barista was young, so his awkward standoffishness alone didn't give me the impression that I should feel unwelcome. I asked about their wine list. The barista turned around and directed my question to the gentleman standing next to him, who I presumed was the owner. He stood right in front of me, tersely muttered something back to the barista, and proceeded to continue ignoring me. When walking through the place to take a look at things, I got the impression that I was invading people's space. Maybe it was the layout of the place - it WAS pretty cluttered, ostentibly adding to its rustic charm. Anyway, I'm not really sure what that was about. I'd taken a shower. My hair was messy, I was wearing my old glasses, and I wasn't dressed flatteringly, but I hadn't really anticipated that I'd have to charm people into giving me decent service. Was it silly of me to expect the owner to stop and talk to me about the wine list? Even at a corporately owned coffee shop, the shift leaders will talk about relatively mundane things with me, like the wifi or the weather. Shouldn't a business owner care how he comes across to his clients? I'm not the most outgoing person, but it's my job is to be friendly and accessible to my clients when I'm at work, regardless of how I feel when I wake up that morning, and even if I don't own the place. I can appreciate good taste and offering unique things, but a pleasant environment means enough to me that it's worth taking my business to the Starbucks down the road. I stumbled upon Caffespresso on a random Wednesday morning when I didn't want to go to another Starbucks. I wanted something more local and cozy cafe lounge in Richmond. I ordered the vanilla latte with a breakfast croissant (eggs, cheese, and bacon-esque meat). The barista told me that she'd bring out the order and that I could pay after wards, which was different but I didn't mind. I didn't get to scope out the place much because it got pretty packed but there's suppose to be a bookshelf that's 'give/take' a book that I'll be checking out the next time I stop by. They also have a front patio that you can enjoy your beverage and snack of choice! [Vanilla Latte] It wasn't as strong but rather more milky than I would have liked. Next time, I'll probably ask for a double shot of espresso. I'm no coffee expert but I do like my coffee beverage to have more of a coffee taste to it. Anyway, they topped the latte with the typical chocolate coffee design, which was cute but I could do without. [Breakfast Croissant] I think this was the reason why the order took a little longer because they probably made it on site! Well, I'll be damned! Not another prepackaged breakfast sandie? Yay! It was quite delicious...warm, pressed, and gooey. When I got the croissant, they basically gave me two sandwiches. One for now and the second one for if I was really hungry or to go. He's a very interesting and welcoming character that often stands behind the counter, listens to you talk for a bit, and chimes in when he's ready... but I like it. The Panini's are amazing, fixed on fresh Focacia bread that he makes himself. Try the Roasted Vegetable or the Spicy Capriocola The coffee is equally good and he sells roasted beans as well as some other items like homemade granola. I also love the whole bring a book take a book policy. The place is very comfy and invites you to stick around for a while. Hell, it even has a guitar in the corner screaming "Play me!" This was such a cute hidden gem! As soon as I walked in, I felt like I was in a movie. Caffespresso has stolen my heart. The owner was amazing despite having to roll around on a scooter because his leg was broken (bless his heart!). He introduced me to the Italian version of hot chocolate which was perfect on this unseasonably cold evening. Their "take a book, leave a book" policy is awesome and the desserts looked delicious. I really don't have anything bad to say about this shop. Yes the prices were higher than normal, but I honestly think they are fair for the quality of service and product that you get. I came in with a couple of friends to relax and catch up, one of whom bought a coffee. It wasn't very crowded at all so we sat down on the couches and all commented how nice the atmosphere was. Until the old man that works there came over and asked if he could get us anything, to which we polietly declined. That was clearly the wrong answer as he shot me a scowling look and walked away. If you're looking for a nice welcoming place to go visit with friends, just know that your presence is only welcome if you purchase food and coffee. Otherwise, you mean nothing to the owners. There are plenty of great coffee shops around, so I would recommend going somewhere else if you'd like to enjoy your time in a friendly environment. read more

This is the worst place if you care about customer service. Went here because I was recommended by a regular customer. Soon as I walked into the building, the older gentleman working looked at me as if I didn't belong. I told him it was my first time and he continued to stare. He didn't explain the menu, he didn't ask what I wanted to try. I asked him for a menu he basically threw it at me. After looking at the menu he continued to watch me, still not asking if I needed help. Before I walked out I asked if I could use the bathroom and he said "nope only for customers". I placed the menu back where it came from and walked out, he still did not say anything, not even bye. About as fast as an Italian train from Rome to Brindisi, which means not at all...but great coffee in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Definitely come if you have some time to sit and enjoy your coffee instead of scarfing it down in a port-a-cup. As europeans know, coffee is more about the experience, the conversation and the quality of the beans. This little shop tucked away off street near Gaskins and Patterson (don't blink or you'll miss it) serves up great coffee and the food is no slouch either. Breakfast sandwiches, pastries, soup, paninis, you name it, and all done with care and quality. Try their specialty espresso drinks, like the Odessa (steamed milk, caramel, almond & amaretto) or Dante's Paradiso (steamed milk, white chocolate, vanilla, caramel)...or any combination you can think of...oh, and did I mention Italian wine and beer? I think to really appreciate the speed of Italy, an hour or so spent in here would give you the right idea...it's good for your blood pressure to slow down and enjoy food and drink at a pace that seems to keep europeans alive for longer periods of time, and the coffee is excellent, so give Caffespresso some time and they are sure to impress, and make you want to come back for more. I've been a couple of times to Caffespresso, once for a Sunday brunch and another to grab some quick breakfast before work. Brunch was my first visit and my husband and I love the intimate cafe vibe. It was full of people just coming out of church. I got a great sandwich with prosciutto and cheddar on a croissant and my husband got a lovely pasta dish on a bed of mixed greens. I ordered a chai latte, which was perfect too. We had a lovely brunch, service was a bit slow but it was crowded so to be expected. My next visit was on a Wednesday morning and they were understaffed with only one barista working at the time. I ordered another croissant sandwich and chai latte and waited for only 10 minutes. The food was just as good as before. I highly recommend the place if you're looking for something low key and local for coffee and sandwiches. read more

I was a regular for eight years and loved everything about the place but the service in the mornings has gone from rude to hostile. The woman who opens clearly hates her job. When she greeted me with "What do you need?" to take my order it was bad enough. But when she became angry and hateful when my friend simply asked her to turn down the dance music at 7:30 in the morning, it was unacceptable. A very cute coffee shop in the West End. The Italian vibe is definitely present, with friendly staff and a pay-as-you-leave policy and various wines and coffees available for takeaway purchase. The lattes are very good, as are the panini sandwiches. Expect some wait time for food service, as they usually have just a couple people on staff and it can get busy on weekends. If you are hanging out, that's not a big deal. Nice local crowd of retirees, families, and youngish suburbanites. Not a hipster vibe like Black Hand or Lamplighter. Seating is a combination of tables/chairs, two sofas, and a lounge chair creates a nice mix of work spaces, social spaces, and introvert spaces. Despite the slower food service, I'm making this my new local place, as there are not many independent shops in the far West End, just three or four or five Starbucks. Caffespresso is definitely my favorite coffee shop outside of the city of Richmond. That said, there's pretty much just this place and Starbucks. I come at least once a week- sometimes even more often. When I come on Sundays, the service is incredible (Leah is my absolute favorite) but whenever I come during the week it is awful. There is one older man who works later in the day on weekdays and he is always SO SO RUDE to me and my friends. We literally dread going in when he is there. Today we were sitting there doing homework, had already taken our dishes back, and he yelled at us that it was time to close at 5:40 (when they close at 6). When my friend came in at 5:05 she said hello and he replied "what do you want?" and she ordered and he said nothing. If you don't like working past 4pm please quit because I love this place and really wish I could actually enjoy it!!!!! read more
