THE HOT MESS
Thien-Tyler N.

Food: 3.5/5 Service: 4.5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Pretty busy Sunday morning, but managed to get a seat at the open bar. Service from the bartender was great, and food came out in a timely manner. Food itself was quite nice, hot chocolate hit all the right notes, and the Olliebollen (first time) was a unique sweet treat to have, basically more doughy donut holes. The Hot Mess was the only thing I was slightly disappointed by, as some of the sausage I got in it was noticeably colder than the rest of the dish (but definitely not refrigerator cold). [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall nice place, very large and open dining area with two levels, I'd come back to try again![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

*CHEESE CURDS

I stopped for dinner, and it was great! I ordered the luxemburger and some cheese curds. The cheese curds had amazing cheese pulls. I thought my burger was good, but it was a little saltier than I prefer. My server was great! However, I did wish she checked up on me more. I ran out of water and was not able to get a refill since our server was so busy hosting other people. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior of the restaurant was really cozy, though![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Good first experience.

Our server Kelly was wonderful! She was super charismatic and helpful. I tried the farmers omelette with potatoes and toast and it did not disappoint. The basil aioli was delicious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant itself is eclectic with bikes hanging from the ceiling and floor to ceiling windows.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

On a recent visit to Madison, Café Hollander was recommended and while we were hesitant due to its location in an outlet mall, we made our way there and are glad we did! Café Hollander is a grandiose spot with clear nods to European cafes and pubs. Lots a heavy woods, industrial style fixtures, big spaces, high ceilings and ornate details throughout. Definitely takes you out of the mall and sends you overseas. We grabbed a high top in the bar area and were greeted by our server within minutes. It' was brunch time, so we scoped out the Bloody Mary menu and both landed on the Bloody Fresca, which is a Bloody Mary with a few spicy additions including cholula and a jalapeño stuffed olive! It was delish and apparently having a small beer chaser is a thing...maybe a midwestern thing? Either way, it worked and I appreciated it. For food we started with the crispy Brussels and they were phenomenal. Pepitas, crema and parm on Brussels? Don't think I can have them any other way now! I went with the meatloaf sided with asparagus. The meatloaf was juicy and packed with seasoning and veggies. Absolutely loved the crisp they put on the edges of the meatloaf. A nice touch! The asparagus was standard, a tad al dente for my liking, but it was okay. My pal went Mediterranean with the falafel bowl. He ate every bit of it, so success. Overall, we really enjoyed our time, cocktails and food at Café Hollander. Outlet mall or not, worth a stop by!

One page of the beer list. They also have nice write ups in their book.

Great brewpub with a nice menu and excellent beer list (particularly Belgian beers). They also serve brunch all day, which is a nice feature. The building itself is very modern and has a classic brewpub feel to it. We got super friendly service from our server, and the beers were served properly in the appropriate glassware. The breakfast Sammy was nice. I love a good pretzel bun and this one was overflowing with cheese and ham. And the fries were really good as well. Definitely a great choice if you're in Madison.

Had the BEST experience with our waiter Andre!! His was so charismatic and friendly, and took great care of my boyfriend and I! He gave amazing recommendations and the food was delivered so quickly! GIVE THIS MAN A RAISE! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The energy and vibes were a great way to end the night[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

It's one of our favorites for food! My husband raves about their beer menu as well. We have been to several café Hollander locations and the Hilldale location is our favorite. Really nice atmosphere with tons of seating. In the summer months, they open up the garage doors to bring the outside in. And in the winter month, they have igloos that you can eat outside with heaters. This requires an advanced reservation and can be quite pricey unless you have a larger group. The service can be hit or miss. Free parking makes up for it as well as the ability to shop around Hilldale mall. Tip: get the beer, cheese sauce, and garlic aïoli to dip your french fries in!

Would give more stars if I could. Incredible experience with friendly staff. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Sat outside in early February and couldn't reccomend it more with their heated outside seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

The last couple of times I have been here I've walked away pretty happy with everything. It doesn't stand out on my list of top choices in Madison but is a great option for when you're in the area or you're looking for a reasonably priced brunch for a larger group. Love being able to sit outside in the summer as it's a bit loud inside, and service has been a lot more consistent the last times I've been. Today we had a large group come in for brunch and the wait was barely 20 min despite it being quite busy. I'm obsessed with the blackened garlic aioli and that avocado smorrebrod was great (I added chorizo).

they have a creative menu, fast service overall and such a cute restaurant!! ordered: parfait

Hot chicken sandwich

I took out dinner from here on a Saturday evening. There were people waiting for seats. The place had good ambiance. Tomato bisque was a nice flavorful soup. Hot chicken sandwich could have had some more heat and flavor. Grilled beef tosti with sweet potato fries was my other entree. Grilled beef sandwich tosti could have been a bit more flavorful.

Fried Chicken & French Toast

I've come here a couple of times for dinner and was not ever impressed but did recently come here for brunch and preferred the brunch over the dinner menu. My husband and I came here around 11 am on a Sunday and were able to get seated at one of the high top tables without a wait. We were quoted a 20 minute wait to get a table with service. The only downside to sitting at the high top tables is that you need to order at the bar and that can be a little challenging depending on how many people there are. I got the fried chicken and French toast and my husband got the pancakes. Both items were okay. I also got one of the bloody Mary's that had cilantro infused in it and wasn't too big of a fan. I would come back for happy hour since they have an extensive cocktail menu and some of the flavors seem interesting. They also have trivia on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm.

We tried about two months ago on a Sunday and there was quite a line so we tried somewhere else new to us. It was worth the trip back here! Marigold is a really cute place inside. We were between the breakfast and lunch rushes so we easily found a table after ordering. We noticed there was a steady flow of customers and the tables turned over at a decent pace so maybe we should have stood in line last time around. Hard to know sometimes. We ordered the breakfast burrito, avocado toast and buttermilk pancakes. Service was quick and friendly. The pancakes were fluffy and they looked good. The service was absolutely great, and the restaurant has a lively, charming vibe. It does tend to get busy, so I'd recommend arriving at a reasonable time. I ordered the French toast, which was clearly their own elevated take on the classic. The flavors were good, but the texture was a little different than I expected and threw me off slightly. It felt more like a chic, creative version of French toast rather than the traditional style, which is the only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five. Everything else was fantastic, though, and I'd definitely come back to explore more of the menu. Worth checking out if you're in the area.

It was Thursday evening and they had a ribs/pulled pork special. We waited about 10 minutes at the bar for a table. The bar and atmosphere is great. Pretty bar lights and an old wood bar. We were seated by the window with a great view of the capital. My daughter and I shared the rib dinner and had plenty of food for us. Our waitress was new and learning but was doing a good job. I don't eat a whole lot of deep fried foods and that just seemed like a lot. I sat at the bar, and the bartender got to me pretty quickly and asked me if I wanted a drink. I ordered a glass of wine and a water, but had to ask him for a food menu. I opted for the grilled chicken sandwich with the side salad instead of fries. And then I waited. So long that the woman next to me made comments. People who showed up after I had ordered were eating fish before my sandwich showed up. The chicken was perfectly cooked, but completely lost on the sandwich. There was so much swiss on it, I could only taste cheese and bacon on greasy lightly toasted bread. The salad was barely dressed and just lettuce. I couldn't tell you what flavor the dressing was, but I piled the lettuce on top of the sandwich to try and cut some of the richness. I like cheese as much as the next gal, but it was a chicken sandwich. Even the mustard was lost. The prices are good, the actual restaurant was cute and just across from the capital. The portion was large, it just was lackluster.

Regrettably, something went wrong at my dinner at Graze. After the meal, I received an email asking for direct feedback with the management, which I shared. And I received a very well written apology with a sincere effort to make things right. That effort brought what would have been a 2* experience up to a 4* review. The most important tidbit I have to share for someone contemplating a dinner at Graze is to go hard on the vegetable focused starters. Wow! These were the stars of the show. Hands down. Full stop. Those were five star dishes all the way. Asparagus in season with bread crumbs. Stunning! Young tender beets paired with strawberries? Inspired! While the burger was tempting, I had a burger for lunch and I couldn't bring myself to do a two burger day. I went for the Korean Fried Chicken app as my main, paired with those veggies. It was plenty of food, and I had high hopes for the chicken given the chef's background. But some of the meat was stringy and overcooked. The sauce was zesty with good heat. Still, it fell short of the standard. Warm cookies and milk are never bad. Classics are classics for a reason. But given some of the culinary creativity that exists in the kitchen, it's a bit uninspired. That said, one scoop of seasonal pear sorbet was fantastic! Great flavor and texture. While the server did not know what type of pear was used, I'd put my money on Boscs. The place is popular. Make reservations early. Madison turns out not to be such a late night town, so plan accordingly. While I may not have been tempted to return originally, after the care and attention I received from management, I would indeed come back. I'm sure there is a 5* experience to be had at Graze, but sometimes it takes a second visit to get there.
