I was really excited to try Cafe La Vie. The ambiance is cute and the pics online looked lovely. While all of the servers were kind, they seemed a bit disorganized. It took a decent amount of time to get water and even longer with multiple reminders to then receive my coffee. I wasn't sure who exactly was supposed to take care of our table so it made it difficult to ask. Hoping this isn't a common experience for guests and it was probably just an off day for everyone. Food was good. I think the prices for quality and quality didn't meet my expectations. I hope to come back for a different meal time and try it again! read more

Ambiance - hey, it's part of the Le Meridien Hotel, and guess what?we were staying there! We seated ourselves at the bar and I quickly ordered a Kolsch local brew while hubby ordered a Stella 0.0 beer - we weren't TOO hungry but still - we ordered up a menu and dived in! I ordered a smoked turkey soup while hubby ordered up his signature French Onion soup - we also ordered up a 1/2 charcuterie board - good news? The soups were just great, really. We ate 'em up quickly! The charcuterie board? Ok - where to start? The salami and prosciutto were great. The cheddar cheese was way too basic and (dare I say) a couple pieces were hardening up- yikes! Fresh it was not. The other cheese was unable to be ID'd and was kind of "bread like" - not good. But the bread (crostini)? Oh my goodness- hard as a rock. Not good at all. So we ate up the meat, some of the cheddar - and left most of that funky cheese and that hard bread. The hummus and fig spread was great, though - so no issues there. Hmm. So this was a mixed bag. But the surprise came - partly my fault, I know - I asked for a shot of their most expensive Scotch on the rocks. I should have asked the price - just over $100 for a shot! We didn't know this and only wish the bartender would have asked me to confirm the order by saying "the one I have is over $100/shot - are you sure you want it!" - but that didn't happen, darn it. So we paid up - and I swore never to order nothing but basic Scotch going forward! So - the soups and beers were great - but we suggest staying away from the charcuterie board until the bread and cheese selections are tweaked a bit more! read more

I am utterly confused about this place because the dinner reviews seem to be stellar, but coming here for lunch, it was absolutely DEAD. Although the waitstaff are incredibly warm and kind, I thought it was a bit odd that when our plates were being brought out, our server saw a stain on the plate and proceed to SCRATCH IT OFF and still give us that plate. The dining area itself was cute, but it was run down. The empty table next to us had sugar or salt all over it... strange. When our food came out, I was so unimpressed. CLV Burrata: the baguette seemed to have been drenched in oil first and then fried, the pistachio tasted stale, and the burrata had no flavor. CLV Steak Frites: This came with a small side salad and the leaves will wilted and old. The actual steak was not top of the line and it was overly salty. When the server came by to check on us, she asked how everything was and when I said my salad was wilted she had already turned around and said, "great!" I sent my plate back and didn't want anything else. The Bonhomme: A burger that looked nothing special! I didn't try, but my husband said it was average. I would be incredibly weary of anything outside of dinner. And I hope management speaks to their waitstaff about touching people's plates and scratching off old food. I was in a hurry and looking for a place to have breakfast in Clayton. It also needed to be a place that took reservations. I clearly didn't read as much as I should have because we wouldn't have gone here had I realized it was inside a hotel. We arrived right on time and walked through the lobby right into the restaurant. We were seated at what they referred to as a couch table. I sat on the couch, we had a small round table, and my husband sat in a very uncomfortable chair. There were better tables, but they were for larger groups. They also remained empty the entire time we were there. I had to sit way forward to reach the table. The setup was just uncomfortable. The carpet was really dirty. I've been in restaurants when they cleaned up with a little silent sweeper/vacuum thing while diners were there. That was not done here. Our server came over fairly quickly. We ordered lattes that we didn't get for maybe 15 minutes. They were sitting on a counter and we could see them. Our server was standing around looking bored so my husband got her attention and pointed to our lattes and she brought them over. Of course they weren't hot, but still warm enough. It took 45 minutes to get our food. And then it wasn't great. I ordered French toast and it was overcooked on one side. I also ordered the berries and cream that was an add on. It came in a bowl and not on the French toast and there wasn't a spoon. My food fared no better than okay. My husband ordered a short rib hash. There wasnvery little short rib in it and what meat there was, tastes like stew beef. Our server paid very little attention to us. We had to flag her down to get water. She didn't check to see if everything was okay after someone else delivered our food, etc. There wasn't anything positive about the meal or the service. We won't be going back. read more

For a hotel restaurant this place was such a delight. I went for Clayton Restaurant week and did a pre fixe from that menu and a meal on the regular menu. The food portions were moderate but if you get an app and entree you will be full. A stand out appetizer was the dried fig burrata that was topped with pistachios and mauldon flaky salt. Our server Corinthian was so knowledgeable of the menu food and drinks so she was able to recommend great pairings and must tries if we were not going to come back frequently. One suggestion was doing a whiskey/bourbon flight. It was an excellent experience because we got to write down our taste notes in real time. The restaurant is located in the Le Méridien so you would need to park on the street or in the hotel parking garage to access the main floor dining room. It is fairly accessible but the lighting for dinner was a bit darker than expected. read more

We look forward to Restaurant Week (RW) every year as an opportunity to enjoy a special dinner at a local spot we've never visited. 5 of us came from St Charles County and were delighted with our experience at Cafe La Vie (located within the La Meridien Hotel, parking underground). The cocktail menu and RW menu were fabulous, and yet bringing it all to life with effusive knowledge and enthusiasm about the various dishes was our outstanding server, Corinthian. She shared interesting and incredible insight on each offering, making us feel valued and appreciated patrons, advising based on our interests and likes to help us make decisions. Each of us was pleased with our various selections. While the soups were tempting on a cold night, I was delighted with the French-inspired Lyonnaise salad complete with a perfectly prepared soft boiled egg. My panko-encrusted swordfish with burre Blanc sauce was light and tasty. The gooey butter beignets were light on the gooey butter custard-like filling, as promised by our server (and more special than the typical St. Louis dessert), sprinkled with powdered sugar and drizzled with chocolate. The ample dessert (3) provided take home leftovers for delicious breakfast treats. The cocktails I enjoyed included a Japanese Old Fashioned & an Espresso Martini, both very good. Initially upon arrival, an adjacent table of younger women was unusually loud (in a space that doesn't absorb noise well) that I feared would spoil our evening; rather than approach them (tempted) or engage management, I glared a few times at them and it seemed to have resolved. I want to give this review more stars, I really do. But for the price you pay for the food and service, you expect more. The employees were nice. Their version of the French dip? Oh that was a yes. French onion soup was ok too, but honestly it could've been thicker. But when you pay 19 bucks for a burger and they hand you those little packaged mustard packets like a fast food place? Oh come on now. At least put ketchup and mustard bottles on the table. Our waitress was sweet, but she had too many other obligations going on and we got cheated out of refills. We were there during lunch and noticed when customers left, nobody even came by to bus the tables. I'm not sure, but the place kinda feels like it's on its last leg. It could be better. We were very excited to try Café la Vie for Clayton Restaurant Week. Unfortunately, in my several years of participating in this Clayton tradition, this was the first time I left disappointed and felt that the experience was not worth the money. I ordered the tomato bisque and the ribeye (with a $10 upcharge). The tomato bisque had an off-putting texture. Instead of being creamy and rich, it was chunky and tart, more like marinara sauce. My ribeye was lackluster as well. I ordered it medium, but it came out well done and appeared gray in some spots, which made me wonder if it had been previously frozen. The garlic spinach served with it was cold to the touch. Others in our group said their spinach and ribeyes were cold too. One person even sent their steak back because it was so cold, and it took 30 minutes to receive a replacement. I didn't mind my dessert. It was nothing to get too excited about, but after the first two courses, I was just happy to have something decent. Then I noticed it was served on a cracked plate. Our server was kind and apologetic about the issues, but overall, the food was overpriced for the quality. Unfortunately, we will not be returning. read more

Couple months ago, I was able to check out Cafe La Vie in the Le Meridien Hotel and I loved it! As soon as you walk in you will see a wide bright concierge area, but if you continue to walk straight and up little steps, a nice hostess waits to greet you. We ordered: The Baked Brie, Mini Wellington, Short Ribs, Steak Frites, Creme Brulee, and Gelato. 2 cocktails and coffee for drinks! I got a pineapple drink and my friend got the espresso martini. I love Pineapple, but this drink wasn't for me, but it may be for you, so don't take me up on it. The Baked Brie and Steak Frites were heavenly and the best part for me, personally, was ending the meal with coffee. (Illy brand). Of course, if you're sensitive to caffeine, I recommend to stick with just the Creme Brulee. :) Don't fear parking! The concierge will validate your ticket before you head out. read more

They also have different experiences throughout the year such as the champagne and chocolate tasting. We came for lunch! We love the atmosphere and the convenient location of this restaurant. Services were good, but could be better with more staffs. We made a reservation for dinner and waited to be seated for a while since there was no staff at the welcome desk. They had our table ready despite we arrived 20 minutes early which was impressive. Our waitress did the best she could but it was impossible to do a good job with her taking care of 6 different tables and a room with a group party. We got the box and check served right as we finished with the entree, so we decided to skip ordering desserts. We felt bad for her so did not ask to have our water refilled. Regarding their foods, french fries were the best part of the night. It was hot and crispy. Maybe we should have ordered "catch of the day" (it was cod on the day of our visit). Steak was well seasoned and cooked medium as ordered but the meat was not as tender. Pork chop had no taste whatsoever and its meat fell apart just by using forks. When it comes to hotel restaurants, this one is always at the top of the list. The ambiance and vibes in this place are always calm, cool, and sexy. They have different seating arrangements from lounging in couches, to the bar and high top tables, booths and tables. I've stayed at the Le Meriden hotel whenever in Clayton and I love that I do not have to leave the hotel to have a delicious meal. I've had the burger before which is great and during my most recent visit, I saw multiple burger orders being delivered to customers. This time I opted for the Pork Chop and let me tell you, it was one of the best pork chop dishes I have ever had. Hats off to whoever put this plate together because the flavors complemented each other so well. It was quite amazing actually and the server who said it was fantastic, was not wrong at all. He did warn me that it would take a little bit of time to prepare and he was not wrong. It took about 30 minutes for this dish to come together but it was worth the wait. When the dish came, it was so beautifully put together. The presentation and flavors were top notch. I HIGHLY recommend the pork chop dish. A bone in thick pork chop cooked to perfection, served on a cranberry pecan risotto, with a fennel, heirloom tomato, arugula salad. The flavors individually and together were so tasty. I had such a great time at Cafe la vie! I started with their blackberry smash, and the espresso martini absolutely delicious. I normally don't drink martinis, but the espresso one was really good. The mussels were nicely done, dipping it in the buttery sauce, which brought out the flavor. It is certainly a little bit of work eating mussels. I had never eaten duck before, so I decided to give their duck confit tartine a try. It tasted like although a little dry. The smoke salmon canpes was on point, one of my favorite chic bites. The baked brie bite was on the sweeter side with the jam. I love how you get a postcard with your check! I sent a postcard to one of my friends. A big shootout to the bartender Jordan! We celebrated a birthday by ringing in the New Year at Cafe la Vie inside Le Meridian Hotel in downtown Clayton. We started with the Baetje Farms Goat Cheese Cornet with pepper jelly and chives. The cutest little cone held upright by a glass of rice. Next appetizer from their Sparkling Hour Menu was the Fennel Sausage Croquettes. Served crispy in a ragu sauce with provel fondue poured over the top. I wanted to lick the plate clean. Then we tried what is possibly the best French Onion Soup in the city. I think of myself as an onion soup connoisseur as I have to order it whenever it's on the menu. Topped with melted gruyere is the only way to do it. Our server recommended the Shaved Kale Salad with candied walnuts and dried cherries. We added a perfectly cooked salmon on the side. You can add any protein to a salad to make it a meal. We couldn't finish this one, so we got it to go. No need to heat up the next day bc the salmon is perfect chilled. The Ruby Shrimp Maccheroni with pancetta and mascarpone cream had so many tasty ingredients listed on the description, it was a no brainer to order. We couldn't finish, so we got it to go. Warmed up great the next day. Our final entrée was the Steak Au Poivre with broccolini and smashed potatoes. I really enjoyed the charred broccolini to add an extra depth of flavor. Just the right amount of gravy to go with the potatoes. The meat was just a little over medium rare, so I'm happy I didn't order medium. For dessert we finished our meal with Crème Brûlée. They included lemon curd on top which was a nice sour element to cut through the creaminess. We also had the Chocolate Lava Cake served with vanilla ice cream. The chocolate cake did not pour out any lava and the vanilla ice cream wasn't very vanilla. Still good, just not extraordinary. For a fancy dinner out, make sure to add Café la Vie to your list. This is a breakfast/brunch review only. I came on a Saturday morning about 10 AM. I'll start by saying the food was fine. About the quality you would expect of a restaurant attached to a hotel. That in and of itself was a little disappointing being that as a local I've heard good things about the French food and atmosphere. The real disappointing piece for me was the service. Besides being just simply bad it didn't seem to match the reputation or the price point of the restaurant. The execution of that service failed at almost every single touch point. From the 15 minutes before somebody came over to greet us when the restaurant wasn't that busy to the appetizer being put in with our entrées, the silverware not being on the table when we needed it to it taking forever to close at our check, even though we asked for our check and said we were in a rush to leave. The servers were friendly, but were serving with a level of excellence that you'd expect to find at a diner. And not like Kingside diner, but like courtesy diner. Again in addition to just being bad and failing to meet our needs at every point, it just did not match the restaurant quality, the atmosphere, or the price point. I had a salmon club sandwich and it was great. It came with hot fries and catsup. I bet that the fries were made here. The rest of the menu looked good. The entrees were unusual and were pretty pricy. Some of the seats were on sofas and since I was alone I seated at the sofa and it was comfy. Tables were low. Service was good. Ambiance was that of the hotel lobby where the cafe was situated. There is also a coffee bar with regular and specialty food. The chocolate oatmeal was a surprise to me but was very good. I recommend this cafe for a quiet lunch. Check out how the more expensive items are for your budget. A friend and I planned to meet up for brunch this weekend and we had made a reservation over 2 weeks ago. We purposely chose this restaurant because we were able to make a reservation for brunch. When we showed up on time (ahead of time) for our reservation, the restaurant was so understaffed that we never actually even got seated. We went over to the empty unbussed table and just sat down 15-20 minutes past our reservation. Kind of ridiculous. It was unfortunately a very poor first impression of our meal. The rest of the meal was fine and so was our server. The food was decent - our group had both Benedict variations. My country Benedict was tasty but the meat had a beef jerky consistency of toughness. Otherwise the eggs and the hollandaise were delicious. It was a small scoop for $4.00, which wasn't too bad. I don't know what brand of ice cream it was, but he said it was very good. I decided to splurge and ordered the French Napoleon. The menu description made it sound delicious, puff pastry, lemon crème, chocolate ganache and fresh berries. Yum! What could go wrong? There was no lemon crème, no chocolate ganache and the berries were unripe. It was just a commercial puff pastry with canned whipped topping, unripe berries and a drizzled chocolate flavored sauce, that wasn't even real chocolate and tasted bitter. The price for this was $14.00. I didn't eat it all. It just wasn't very good. so disappointing. Also if you order it, you have to order the French Napoleon, don't just say, "the Napoleon" because it confuses the staff. when I went to the restaurant to pick it up, I told the woman behind the bar that I had ordered the "Napoleon" and was there to pick it up. She was confused and asked I'd I meant the "French Napoleon". There is nothing else on their menu that uses the word "Napoleon" in it, so I don't know why she was confused as it's common in restaurants to order "the fish" or "the steak" or "the cassoulet" if they only have one type of that particular dish. She also couldn't understand how to handle a pick up order. she asked how I had ordered it. I explained that I had called the restaurant and ordered it to go. It seemed like a foreign concept to her. I have very mixed feelings about this restaurant. Super limited menu with absurd prices, but excellent service and food is pretty good. Not "blow you away" good, but I really liked the French toast and the breakfast potatoes (a mixture of regular and sweet potatoes, which was unique and yummy). As a titanium guest staying at the hotel, I had breakfast vouchers for each day of my stay, which include tax and tip (but I also learned the servers only receive $2 for each voucher, so you may still want to tip with cash as well). We also ate dinner here one night out of necessity and it was average quality food with great service, but overpriced. My favorite part was easily the mini individual condiments served with each meal, which included baby jars of jelly and the cutest hot sauce I've ever seen. In summary, this place is pretty good when it's free, but I personally wouldn't pay to eat here. read more

Tucked away behind the lobby of Le Meridian, you'll find a very stylishly decorated and very empty dining room of Cafe La Vie (at least at 5:30pm on a Sunday evening). My parents like to eat dinner early so here we were! We were greeted promptly and ordered some wine and apps. We ordered the French Onion soup, Potato and Leek soup and a smoked salmon app. The soups were both delicious, flavors were on point and the crusty bread served with it was spot on. The smoked salmon app was really just okay - not bad but not great. For dinner, we ordered the pork chop, shrimp pasta, roasted chicken, and burger. The shrimp pasta was delicious. I loved everything about it. It was very creamy! The pork chop was cooked well and the Brussels sprouts were tasty! My dad loved his burger and the fries were crispy and seasoned well. The service and ambiance of the restaurant were really great. It's a very cute spot at Le Meridian hotel. The food wasn't inedible but just not my preference. The chicken salad was not really a chicken salad. There was no Mayo bonding the chicken together. It was like a grilled chicken breast that was cut into small pieces with cranberries thrown in the mix. Since there was no sauce to bond it together, all the meat and cranberries fell off the croissant every time I picked it up. The espresso martini was ok, but there was too much sugary syrup in it which made it more sweet than robust. The cafe latte was your average latte. While there wasn't anything terrible about the experience and food, there wasn't anything warranting a return visit. read more

2nd time here - 4.5 means a 4 in yelp. first time had the salmon (delicious) and the risotto (special off menu). Such a gorgeous (non rooftop) bar at Le Meridian hotel in Clayton. Super friendly staff and modern cuisine great for a variety of occasions. 4 out of 5 simply cause the risotto cook was not absolutely perfect. Sometimes that's the difference. Highly recommend for St. Louis though. read more
