I always have a great time here! The food is amazing, and I love the bar with the open patio and live music , it's a great vibe. Service wasn't the most attentive this time, but it was a busy Saturday night, so it was understandable. We started with a shared salad with house lemon vinaigrette and ranch AMAZING. For entrées, we had the Cajun Surf & Turf and the Seafood Platter, both well-seasoned and delicious, plus a bowl of gumbo (not pictured). The worst restaurant experience possible! I was served spoiled fish that was supposed to be snapper. It was rancid. The smell and taste was clearly a bad peice of spoiled fish. When I complained the manager said we don't exchange or replace food even if it's bad!. When I refused to pay for the dish I didn't eat, they called the police and threaten to arrest me for not paying for that portion of the bill. Why would anyone eat at a place like that! This is a new favorite!! The dive bar feel was a nice touch and made it feel ok I had kids with me. The food was top notch. I wanted to try and few things so I had alligator bites (so good and the sauce with it is a must), tuna dip (not fishy, refreshing and the little toast is cute) as well as my favorite- lobster bisque. It had a ton of lobster and was creamy and rich. My 5 year old enjoyed his grilled cheese and fries. Our server was so nice and helpful with the menu. I can't wait to go back. read more

We stopped by Cajun Roux on a Sunday afternoon hoping to grab a seat at the bar, but it was completely full. The bar only has around 10-13 seats, and during the hour or so we were there, I don't think a single person got up! We ended up getting a table instead, which worked out just fine. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted, seated, and given menus right away. Since we had just eaten a big brunch, we were really just looking for a couple of drinks and a light snack. I ordered a cup of gumbo soup and was a little disappointed that they didn't have a traditional seafood gumbo. The options were chicken and sausage gumbo or their everything gumbo soup, which literally had a little bit of everything in it, so I went with that soup. It had a good flavor and was loaded with different meats, but it was a little watery than I expected. I also ordered the Geauxtreaux Salad because it sounded pretty good on the menu. It read that it came with shrimp, lump crab, tomatoes, boiled eggs, and Parmesan cheese. Unfortunately, it was just okay. The lump crab reminded me more of canned tuna fish rather than fresh lump crab. Also, there was way too much shaved Parmesan, which overpowered the other flavors, and the shrimp were very small. Overall, the salad just didn't live up to my expectations. On the positive side, the restaurant was clean, and the service was friendly and attentive. I'd definitely come back, but next time I'll stick with what I know instead of trying something new. read more

He really wanted the Rockefeller oysters, but they had pork in it, and was told the pork couldn't be removed because it is already in the spinach, and he's allergic to pork. He was so frustrated. My feelings were hurt because I had my mouth ready to try something new. The young, black girl, manager, was so dismissive and I couldn't believe it! She said she couldn't take the oysters back. The Cajun Roux is a locally owned restaurant serving Louisiana-style food and drinks. I had the shrimp po-boy for lunch, and it was phenomenal. As a native of New Orleans, I can confidently say this is the most authentic New Orleans-style po-boy in the Birmingham area. A top-tier po-boy starts with the bread, and New Orleans French bread is legendary--typically sourced from local bakeries like Leidenheimer, Langlinais, Gambino's, or Cartozzo's. I'm not sure where Cajun Roux gets their bread (I suspect Leidenheimer), but it absolutely meets New Orleans standards. The bread is light, with a crisp crust and a soft, airy interior. The sandwich was generously loaded with fried shrimp--perfectly sized and fried to perfection in a light, flavorful batter. It was overflowing with shrimp, just as a proper po-boy should be. Of course, it was served "dressed," meaning mayonnaise, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles--and everything was exactly as it should be, making this a perfect po-boy. The po-boy is served with thin, one-inch-wide French fries, which were excellent as well. Cajun Roux also offers po-boys with oysters, catfish, grouper, or gator. This Cajun seafood spot definitely brings the flavor. The drinks were really good and well made, and the appetizers were a standout. Perfect way to start the meal and packed with Cajun flair. My man and I went and we really had a great experience. The bathrooms were also cleaned which is a plus considering how busy it is. That said, it does get very busy, and the space is pretty condensed, so things can feel a bit crowded during peak times. It adds to the energy, but it's not the most relaxed atmosphere if you're looking for elbow room. Food was fried and typical. Waitresses wear skintight short shorts even though it's not hooters. Our waitress never once checked back on us after the food was delivered. Y'all! This place is the truth! We went here for my best friend's birthday dinner and it was amazing! The staff here are so friendly! I ordered the fried grouper and shrimp platter and it was so tasty! My friends got the Mardi Gras pasta, tallulah pasta, smoked seafood dip and catfish plaquemine. The pasta is just okay to me. I prefer the Mardi Gras pasta. The catfish plaquemine was AMAZING!! The main dishes were great but the sides were the star of the show to me. Their smoked Gouda grits and macaroni and cheese are seasoned so well. The fried okra was okay, not as crunchy as I would have liked for it to be. The gumbo is sooooooooo good!! I prefer it over the crawfish etouffee. I've had Cajun roux To Go so many times now and I'm just obsessed with it at this point. I can't let my previous review stand as they have added rude signage that says you can't be there for more than an hour and a half and you must give a minimum of 20 percent tip. People are going to tip what they want anyway so putting a sign up is just rude. Also just read a review that said they don't allow you to return food, so if your dish is inedible you still have to pay for it. The owners clearly think a little too highly of themselves. I have stopped coming here and advise others to do the same. read more

The wicked chicken is amazing. The drinks used to be they used to have the drink called "the hand grenade". It used to be the same as bourbon Street. We didn't go for a while and they changed the mix of the drinks, but they used to have it on Point so bad we still go back probably two or three times a month in hopes that they fixed it they never do and I could understand why it was such a good drink that like it tasted hot even full of ice cubes. I can't say enough about the hand grenade. They used to have it was so good, but I bet you people couldn't drink it responsibly and that's why they had to water it down but we had some great times there back in the day.... The food is still amazing! But those drinks used to give this place a five star rating! read more

I have been a regular customer at Cajun Roux in Hoover, AL and have visited several times in the past with my legitimate service dog with no issues whatsoever. The staff has always been accommodating, which made what happened on my visit today especially shocking and disappointing. We asked to sit outside on the empty patio. Even though my service dog is allowed inside, I always try to be polite and take her outside when possible. The waitress/manager Kiki Taylor was immediately rude and confrontational about my service dog. She questioned and challenged us in a hostile manner. Her tone and behavior created an uncomfortable scene and made it clear we were not welcome. This was not only poor customer service -- it felt like outright discrimination. Under the ADA, service animals must be permitted in restaurants, and staff are limited to asking only two specific questions (which I provided). Demeaning or harassing a customer with a service dog is illegal. Because of her attitude, we left without eating. I'm deeply saddened that a place I've supported multiple times would treat a disabled customer this way. When I told Kiki we would be leaving because of how rude she was, she smiled very sarcastically and said "we wouldn't have served you anyway." I will not be returning and I recommend others with service animals avoid this location until they properly train their staff on ADA compliance and basic respect. I couldn't wait to start off with the tuna dip, which was part of happy hour. It was very delicious and it came with these little pieces of toast that look like bread. I started off with a house, bloody Mary, which was pretty good. It was a little spicy. I've been decided on getting the crabcake sandwich along with the lobster bisque. I got remoulade on the side for my sandwich. I had wished that the lobster bisque had been a little creamier. It was good, but definitely not my favorite. I did decide to bring home a slice of the Biscoff cheesecake. I am so glad I did because that was one of the best cheesecakes I have ever eaten before. I did order a peach Bellini and when she brought it, it looked like wine and it tasted like maybe a peach wine. It wasn't the typical peach Bellini that I'm used to. I'm usually pretty hot natured, but I wore a sweatshirt since the weather's been a little cooler however it was very chilly in the restaurant so I suggest bringing a sweater or a jacket to wear while you're in there. Red beans and rice had a delicious smoky flavor. The oysters were just salty enough without being briny. Let's get this straight right away: The crabcake sandwich was awesome! I have never had a crabcake sandwich outside of Maryland that gives you this much lump crab meat or that was this good. I came close in New Orleans, but ... they give you so much I barely tasted the lettuce at the bottom they give you so much that it's falling out of the bun, which is always a good thing when it's crab. The scallops were good and the potatoes under the scallops were special. This scallop dish was not a cliche, and it's the scallop dish I was looking for, but didn't know I was looking for. The fries were very disappointing. they didn't look anything like the fries in the picture. I could see the seasoning, but I couldn't really taste it. They were way too thin and some of them were country, some of them were soft-just inconsistent. I ordered in so I can't comment on the service, but I will say that my food was thoughtfully packed. I order from here today I got the "Steamed Roux Basket". This food was the most unseasoned overcooked seafood i have ever had in my life. There were 2 of the most smallest crab legs I've ever had in my entire life and they were cut in half. The oysters were ok. The sausage was supposed to be conecuh, but most definitely tasted like a regular sausage from Publix. Y'all have to do better. I called in an order today while parked outside the restaurant. I picked up the food and came home. The food was horrible. You can tell it had been refried. We had this same meal the previous day and it was great. So we know what it looks and tastes like to have freshly prepared fish and shrimp. The fish and shrimp was completely dried out and was not good. I called the restaurant to complain and simply wanted them to recook the meals. I was told I should've checked the food before I left and that it had been over an hour since the food was prepared and my call. That was an absolute lie. I called in the order at 5:19. I picked up the order at 5:32. I called the restaurant at 6:19. So I was within the supposed hour for them to assist with my complaint. I was refused assistance. I did not want a refund...I simply wanted the food recooked. This is really sad to have spent $115 which included a 10% gratuity for horrible food and even worse customer service. read more

Every time I review, my most focused thing is on the service at any place before the other details. The service here today for me was serious personally wonderful. The host was super kind instantly and silly with me as she walked me to my booth. Then the server I had was so friendly and kind and she servers our food and extra needs and refills completely perfectly. The food ordered by my family was all delicious and we all liked what we got to eat for a group lunch. The vibe inside here today was nice and clean and had a good feel. So I debated leaving a review because....well, I have mixed feelings. When you first walk in, they have two big signs at the front...one about tipping and another about time limit. Neither designed to make people feel particularly welcome or likely to give you the warm fuzzies IMO. It's great they want to take care of their employees (and I hope their pay actually backs up that philosophy.....), but presentation on that really could be so much better....maybe "Tipping of 20% minimum is recommended for our awesome and hardworking servers. We know you will love them like we do!" would be one example. Then hopefully back that up with great service...... As for the time limit, I get it....but the place really wasn't that busy at all during what would typically be busy lunch hours while we were there. I guess they chased a bunch of their potential customers away with their signs....Anyway, so honestly I have a negative impression just walking in already. Service was okay. Food arrived at our table within a reasonable time frame and the food was hot. I had to go to the bar to get our check and then later again to pay because no one checked on us after the food arrived, but at least they were friendly with no attitude. We had the fish tacos and the Mardi Gras pasta. There's no lunch menu and the prices are above average, but the food was fresh and pretty tasty. While the food was decent, I don't know that I would be running back there anytime soon or think to recommend it to anyone in particular.
