Stopped by on my way from work and tried these peanut butter cookie sandwiches that resembled nutter butters, and they were AWESOME! I've worked with Kimberly and "Cake" twice for major events, my daughter's wedding and my husband's 60th birthday. Both times the cakes they produced were absolutely fabulous - delicious to the palate as well as the eye. The wedding cake was colorful, creative and fun. The 3D guitar cake for my husband was a work of art. But the flavor of their cakes is just...mmmmmmmmm!!! Last week my daughter and her husband were in San Diego for the first time since their wedding 2 1/2 years ago. We still had the top layer of their wedding cake in our freezer, so we carefully defrosted it and gave it a taste. It was still fantastic!!! How many bakeries could pull that off? I couldn't be any happier with the cake we ordered. If I ever need a cake again, hands down I am coming here. Everyone at my sister's birthday loved the cake - not only was it aesthetically pleasing but it tasted amazing. I might even think it is the best cake I've ever tried. Kimberly and crew created an awesome, custom red velvet cake for my b-day party last month, as well as assorted cupcakes for my guests. The staff was accommodating and the end product is delicious, affordable and excellent quality. They don't use fondant,which I find tasteless, and the buttercream frosting is orgasmic. I couldn't have been more pleased. My friend visiting from the East Coast spent over twice as much and got an inferior result. Our cake tasting was great, Kimberly was very attentive and jotted down all of my ideas and I let her know she had already made a cake very similar to what I wanted and we showed her pictures. We put down our deposit immediately, despite the high cost. Five months later, two weeks before the wedding, we stopped by to pay the balance and she had lost all of the notes on our wedding and had no proof of our deposit. We had to start from scratch again and show her proof of our deposit, not something a bride wants to go through a week before the big day. Stress is an understatement. We gave her our notes over the phone and despite the very high cost, I was still asked to provide her the ribbon for the cake and drop it off a few days before the wedding...one more thing to do. The cake ended up being delicious of course, I wish the design had gone all the way around the cake but, overall it was cute. Had we not had the mishap I would have given 4 stars. This place is pricey, but if great tasting cake is what you're looking for, then look no further. read more

Hands down the most amazing cake you will ever taste!!!! We ordered a cake for our wedding, and it turned out amazing. The design was exactly the way we envisioned, and every single guest at the wedding was raving about how good it tasted. Some said that the "banana truffle cake" was the best cake they ever had in their life! We loved that the look on our cake was created with White Chocolate wraps instead of the not so great tasting fondant. Jenn, the baker/owner at CAKE was in the kitchen mixing things up when we came in for our cake tasting, and was really helpful (especially with the sampling and knowledge) in helping us make the decisions for our big day. Jenn and her team definitely have a great talent, have won many awards (in good right), but have remained humble and kind... and did not inflate their egos or their prices... they were reasonably priced, especially for all the love and detail that goes into each of their cakes! Absolutely amazing!! The cake was sooooo moist and delicious! I have been craving it since my last. I had the classic chocolate and the coconut flavors for my two tiers cake. The decoration was nice too and I am so glad she doesn't use fondant but white chocolate instead for the decoration. I think I had the gingerbread cupcake and the pumpkin spice cupcake (or some kind of similar flavors). They were moist, flavorful, and soooo good! I couldn't get enough of the frosting--that's saying something, because I usually don't like frosting and will dump half the frosting off a cupcake. FANTASTIC cake! Just served one for a family birthday party and our CAKE cake was a hit! Moist, delicious and beautifully decorated. When I went to pick up the cake there was a young engaged couple sitting with one of the owners, nervously asking questions about how the cake would taste, asking for samples, etc. I wanted to look over and say, "Honey, go worry about your dress or the flowers, but not your cake because these ladies know what they're doing."...but I didn't :) This bakery is VERY busy. It's good to order well in advance of your event and don't expect a lot of small talk from the owners. read more

I ordered my wedding cake here. The cakes were delicious and guests raved about it. Since then I contacted 3 times to make cakes for different occasions. First time was for my moms birthday. They denied my order bc they said that was their busiest week of the year so they couldn't fit another order in, I was like ok. Second time I wanted to order a cake for my husbands birthday, but itdidn't work out again bc my husband's birthday was on a wednesday and they said they don't get their ingredients until thursday, which was another let down. The third time, i contacted them about making a baby shower cake for my sister. I was let down again, because they said they had to deliver a ice cream cake to east county. I gave up...don't even know why i kept trying. They make very delicious cake, no doubt, but they should be a little more flexible in fitting in customers' orders. read more

They had very limited tasting days/times and we had to take a box of samples home, they do not take credit cards, their hours at the shop were very limited and they delivered the wrong size cake to my wedding. read more

I went to many bakery stores with a specific design for my wedding cake; none of the stores were able to make it until a co-worker referred me to CAKE. I had a tasting and loved the banana truffle! Soooo disappointed in CAKE. We planned to use them for our wedding, based on current reviews. We went for a tasting, decided on three flavors that we wanted to have for our wedding with over 150 people. The issue arose when we called 2 weeks in advance to make an appointment and they said no worries just come in on that date. So just in case we called the day before to let them know we were coming in at 2 pm. We arrived on time to catch Kimberly on her way out the door with no clue of who we were or why we were there. .... dont believe the hype. they are always sold out. a lot of their cakes are way dry, but they do look super duper. I found the phone girl, Kimberly to be really arrogant and extremely pushy. I dont know the first thing about ordering a cake and I didn't appreciate being laughed at. I would NEVER recommend this bakery unless you don't care if they forget your order, and don't mind scrounging around at the last minute looking for another place to get your child's birthday cake. That's what happened to me. The owner assured me she could make the cake which I ordered a week before my granddaughter's 5th birthday. She asked for a picture, and I sent one, but they have two websites, one of which does NOT accept pictures (really? Then why have it?). I didn't know that, so was sure the order went in. I called the next day to verify that they got it, but I got no answer. Called the next day, a Saturday; again, no answer. I emailed them, left another message on Sunday. I called again on Monday. They are aren't open on Mondays, but the message said they would return all messages and emails on Tuesday. By then, the birthday was three days away. On Tuesday, I received a GENERIC email response to my emails and messages which just was an advertisement for their business--not even a personal response that they had gotten the picture and were making the cake, as I was promised during the first phone call. I then DROVE over to the bakery. Apparently they had decided to close early that day. I ONLY got a call from the owner that Tuesday night because in my last message, I told her that I was going to use YELP to let others know how unreliable she was. She was blandly apologetic, said they forgot because they had three weddings on Saturday and were just "too busy." Surely, she knew how busy they were going to be ahead of time, and could have refused to make my cake. In all, I sent over five emails, and as many phone calls that were ignored. My conclusion is that they really don't want your business unless you are spending a lot for a big affair cake and don't mind their cavalier attitude. Their prices are high, as well: the quoted price was not by the size of the cake (half-sheet, whole sheet, etc), but by the slice (as is done with wedding cakes, seldom for birthday cakes!) Hence, for a kids' birthday party of 10 children, the price was $70.00 without any special decorating on the top, I was told. I have never posted a review, but thought others should know not to depend on CAKE to follow-through on orders. I have since read through other comments on Yelp. This isn't the first time this has happened at this place. (Read Diana L.'s recent review on 4/6/16, for example.) With so many other bakeries in San Diego (such as The French Gourmet and The European Cake Gallery both of which told me they would happily make a cake for me in two days when I told them I was desperate), why choose this one? Other reviews have also mentioned their "snotty" attitude. So, no matter how good a cake is--if you eventually get it-- why give unreliable, rude people like this your business? read more

I am soo appalled by the rude and snotty service at CAKE. We ordered cupcakes a week ago and it was agreed that we would pick them up on at a set date/time. Once I sent my assistant to pick them up, she arrived at the door and was not greeted pleasantly. The worker at CAKE told her "Can you read the sign, we are CLOSED." Not a "hello" or "Can we help you." My assistant had to bite her tongue and told the worker at CAKE that she was here to pickup an order of cupcakes. At that point, the worker at CAKE responded "We need more notice/time for a cupcake order." My assistant had to reiterate that she was there to pickup an order that was placed a week ago. The worker at CAKE said that she would check their refrigerator to see if the cupcakes were made and they were indeed done and ready for pickup. Finally, the worker at CAKE had given my assistant the cupcakes and changed her sour attitude to a bit sweeter one.... As far as the cupcakes, they were not all that great and nothing special. If the owner of this establishment (CAKE) is reading this review, I would like to provide you with my concerns about the people working for you and how your business is being represented. Your workers need extensive training in customer service and etiquette. The CAKE workers lack customer service and the cupcakes lack taste, not a great combination for the CAKE business. I highly do not recommend CAKE. By the way, this place is soo bad that I had to create a Yelp account to inform consumers about CAKE. read more

I recently got a cake for my girlfriends birthday, she absolutely loved it!. It was phenomenal and everyone loved it. The girls there are super cool. I emailed after calling at 9am and not getting an answering machine. I then Called May 11 for a shower cake on June 10, I spoke to Kimberley who said She would be calling me the next day (She only makes calls on Thursday and Friday between 11-2) No phone call back. I called her again today May 27 and now she says unless I can pick up late on the 10th she won't be able to do because of a large order on Thursday. Very disappointing because now I am scrambling to find another Bakery. Won't be coming back again Opportunity lost for them as we are a Large office that routinely orders special occasion cakes. read more
