Planned a gender reveal party at the last minute for my friend showed them my ideas and since they had very little time to execute some of the ideas I had the owner was pleasant enough to give me others suggestions. At the end the outcome came out stellar. Cake and candies were beautiful and delicious. Their puertorrican rum and brandy recipe is to die for. Staff and ownership are attentive, customer service oriented and passionate about their business. Coffee bar is also excellent. Two stars since Nina was a sweetheart and the cake itself tasted good (or so my husband says). The cake itself made me almost cry in horror. I was so disappointed in how the cake turned out, I didn't eat it. I had ordered a 3D grooms cake from Cakes Plus awhile back as a surprise grooms cake for our wedding day. When the wedding coordinator wheeled it out, my husband was like, "what's that?" I just wanted to cry when I saw how it looked. It was suppose to be a 3D car cake of my husband's very first car, a 2001 BMW M Roadster. It looked like a Volkswagen Beetle-and not a cute one. While email correspondence and in person contact was great with Nina in regards to a 3D grooms cake for my wedding, I'm not paying the hefty price tag for a pen pal and an ugly 3D car cake. You won't find a picture of our grooms cake on their website, because it's hideous. The wedding photos do make it look better than it really is (photos attached). The grooms cake theme was the car with minions in it to represent him and his buddies (the groomsmen). One of the minions was suppose to have a crown to represent him (no crown was made for one). In addition, the minions were smooshed as if they had been improperly stored and got crushed. They also had extremely long arms (see photos). The blue color on the car was streaked as if they didn't mix the color well when adding it to the icing, yet they still hastily iced the car anyways with the poorly mixed icing. Somehow with the internet being available to Cakes Plus and with me emailing them photos of a 2001 BMW M Roadster, they put round head lights and various off detailing on the car. Sadly, everything looked sloppy or smooshed.Thankfully they got the BMW emblem and stock tires correct (even if the tires are flat looking). I paid the full price for this cake a year in advance since Nina kept telling me she couldn't guarantee the price if I waited. While I'm not a sucker for pressure sales tactics (and it really irks me when people do that), I went ahead with it. I had already contacted numerous other places, and there isn't much options for 3D car cakes in the Tampa/St Pete area. Also at the time when I went in to meet with Nina and pay for the cake, they kept trying to sell me pre-made sugar gum flowers. No Thanks. Had I known I was overpaying for a hideous mess, I would have bought a sheet cake with an icing photo of my husband's actual car itself. Had I seen the 3D car cake before they brought it out, or had the time after the wedding, I would have refused it and taken it back to Cakes Plus for a full refund. It was such a HUGE disappointment. The wedding guests probably saw how disappointed I was, as did my husband, since everyone kept saying,"that's so thoughtful of you." No one complimented the 3D car cake, or even ate a piece of it. It sat in our refrigerator for several weeks untouched, when my husband finally decided to eat a slice. He loves sweets, and commented that it was very sweet-probably why it's lasted so long (sugar helps to keep cakes moist and stretch their shelf life). Not really sure what he did with the rest of the cake. I'm just glad he helped to get rid of it since I didn't want to look at it anymore. So disappointed in Cakes Plus. Shame on them for not even bothering to reach out and let me know they smooshed a few things (or several things), the color on the car came out very streaked, and would I still like the cake anyways with a partial refund, a do-over, or a full refund. I'm sure they have to make these kind of cakes a few days in advance. Oh well, lesson learned- never using Cakes Plus again or recommending them. read more

Unfortunately, I can't review their cakes because I didn't order one. I don't live in Tampa and I was referred to Cakes Plus on So. Dale Mabry for a cake topper by a Tampa retail store. There was a young woman and an older woman working when I walked into the store. The younger woman helped me right away but the older woman was immediately critical and dismissive when I said I'd ordered the cake minus a decorative topper somewhere else. She was really lacking good customer service skills! I need to special order a cake for a Valentine's Day event next week but it won't be from Cakes Plus! read more

Was disappointed in this place had high hopes after another baker in town had told me to try there. Cupcake cake part was slightly above average but the icing plain sucked on my strawberry cupcake. It was not even as good as plain whip cream. Tried the fried pound cake which was pretty good and I would consider again if I ever stop by. My son got some kind of package of sprinkled cookies which were hard as a rock and burnt. The 2nd star is for the fried pound cake otherwise it would be a 1* review. For you bakers they had a lot of different sugar decorations for cakes etc so that may be good I do not know. read more

What a fantastic place! This warm family-owned business is a demonstration of what I love about Tampa. I went in looking for a special cake to celebrate a promotion, and they worked with me to order the perfect cake for my event. I wanted a Tampa-theme cake that tasted great and had a real "wow" factor. They definitely delivered. I got a cake with three layers--the top was guava, middle was Mexican chocolate, and the bottom was yellow. Buttercream frosting was the perfect compliment. My guests raved about how beautiful and delicious it was. We went back a couple weeks later to try the pound cake and other cupcakes. We came back AGAIN today to pick up some small cakes and cookies to bring to a family event. We always get a couple coffee drinks and they are reliably great. Definitely try this fantastic bakery. Do you love cake? I might as well as ask you if you like breathing. Cakes Plus makes amazing cake and cupcakes. I pick up a cake every other week for "my wife" and end up splitting it with her. Their Cafe con leche is not very good though, which was a bit disappointing. I can get good cafe con leche anywhere, but not amazing cakes like this! Ugh!! I'm always on the lookout for good gluten free pastries and cakes. My husband and I stopped into "Cakes Plus" on our way into an establishment next door. When I walked in I was told the only gluten free item they had was a gluten free pound cake (individual size, obviously baked in a muffin tin, placed upside down in the container, bottom side iced). The man told me it was made with this, that and the other type of liquor, which supposedly made it "moist". I paid $6.50 (a lot!) for this pound cake muffin. He told me it was best if I ate it at room temperature. I took it home and was excited to dig in. I took my first bite and I was sooooo disappointed. It had the consistency of sand (no exaggeration) and tasted horrible. I let my husband have a taste. He said "aww, I'm so sorry you ended up with a sand castle". He knew I was looking forward to it, since not many places sell gluten free cakes. This place should NOT sell gluten free cakes if they don't know how to make them, especially for what they charge. Not only was the cannoli and chocolate pound cake to die for, but the owner and employees are amazing, wonderful, honest people. It was the first time I had ever been there. My sister and I stopped in to check out the selection. I left my purse there with over $500 in case, bank card, ID, etc... When I didn't come back or call right away, they turned it in to the police and I got it back the same day with everything in it. My family and I can't say enough good things about my Grandy's Birthday cake. We chose a pound cake that was beautifully iced. I'd heard amazing things about this cake from my mom and aunt-- they were all true! I will never forget how yummy this cake was. I just want to say how EMBARRASED i am and how unprofesional this was. I ordered a cake with a week of anticipation. The girl who took my order was very nice.Tottal value of my order was $148.00 " i was reinbursed thanks God". I sent a picture of the actual cake i wanted, very specific with the details. When i pick up the cake a week later it was a dissaster. The girls brought out the cake and placed it on the counter and you could tell on their faces that they were surprized on how awful it looked. The first picture is the idea of the cake with out the candy. Second picture is the cake done by Cakes plus on S Dalemabry. I was very upset, The owner came out and spoke to me and tried to tell me that she saw nothing wrong with the cake. I mean is obvious on how terrible this cake looked. She then proceded to offer me a discount and tried to sell it to me for $100. I looked at her and said. I am sorry but this cake looks like my 5 yeard old daughter made it. Keep in mind that the party was ruined because the whole concept of the birthday party is the CAKE!!! Specially the decortions were supposed to be black and gold. I am very dissapointed. They did every detail I asked for and they worked with my budget. The cake was a huge hit at the party.
