I really love Cal Java. First, they have nice, bold espresso. I've gotten a latte and a blended drink before, both with almond milk. They were delicious and the blended drink was sweet but not overly so. I've also had their brewed coffee several times. The house blend is good. I love their French roast. They also have pastries (including Gluten free) and some small food items like burritos. It's a pretty relaxing environment overall. Almost always get good service and it's decently priced. The wifi is sporadic at times. That's really my only complaint. read more

Really have made this my go-to coffee shop to grab a quick cup of coffee in the mornings or sit down and get some work done. The workers and owners are extremely friendly and make the experience so wonderful. Enjoyed being able to make my own bagel sandwich as well. if you're a true coffee lover, this place is a hidden gem in Chico! While it might not have the polished decor or fancy presentation of other coffee shops in town, the coffee here is absolutely fantastic--hands down the best in the area. I brought my dad here, and he was very satisfied; after being disappointed by three other local spots, he immediately agreed with my assessment. I highly recommend their coffee to anyone who values quality over frills. That said, a little improvement in the pastry selection and interior presentation would take it to the next level. Cal Java on East Ave is a really nice place for coffee (or tea) and snack at any time of day. Such friendly staff. Wonderful coffee choices and delicious bakery items. I love the little gift items for sale and the atmosphere both inside and out make for a relaxing place to be. The staff know their customers. You're not just a number on a screen. I stop for a quick cup of coffee in the morning and a relaxing cup to unwind in the afternoon. I love this place. The coffee operation is a five-star all the way. Can't imagine any better coffee operation for mom and pop. Roaster in the middle of the seating area means y'all mean business. However, your $9 egg bagel sandwich was lacking and kind of pricey too. Eating the two of them together was like contrasting connoisseur coffee with McDonald's breakfast sandwich. Are you guys using a microwave to cook the eggs? (That was a rhetorical question, I know that you are.) All on a cold/stale bagel with limp bacon and a price of unmelted cheese. I really like this place. I really do! I have always tried to keep my cool because I dislike confrontation and always try to be nice and respectful but today I feel I need to speak up!!! Everyone is really nice to me don't get me wrong but some people need to be more organized specially when is crunch time. Coffee is great. Service and food is not worth the visit. The barista brought our burritos to the table outside. Then made our drinks and put them on the bar. We were wondering what was taking so long, assuming she would also deliver our drinks as well. We then realized she was making her own drink and sipping away while our blended drinks melted on the bar. There were no other customers. Bought a cup of coffee and a bagel-egg sandwich. The coffee wasn't bad, but the the egg/ham bagel wasn't good at all. First of all, the "eggs" looked and tasted like some kind of artificial egg product- rubbery, no flavor. The bagel was kind of soggy. There was a thin slice of melted cheese that had no flavor. I can't believe how down hill this business has gone, my parents knew the original owners and once these people took over they stopped coming. I've given them plenty of chances and every time I'm disappointed. The pastries are always bland and mushy almost as if they were frozen. The coffees with syrups always leave a chemical taste. Also I was always met with this awful girl, I don't know her name but she has long dark hair. I've complained to a couple of the girls about her yet she's still there. Hopefully these people make better changes than the floors and clean up. I recommend tin roof or upper crust, high standards and much better service. read more

The girls were so friendly at such an early hour, unlike other coffee shops I've been to in town. I ordered a dirty chai and it was so good, I didn't want it to end! To be fair, my cousin works here so of course I have received fantastic service, but I am also impressed by their large selection of fair trade, organic, and rare (and pricey!) coffees. Best of all, they roast their coffee right there in the lobby where you can see it. I love that. Knowing that my cousin has worked there for years and had several coworkers at her wedding, the employees here seem to be happy with their jobs, and that's noticeable when you watch them interacting with their customers and each other. I don't visit Chico often, but when I do, a trip to Cal Java is a necessity. read more

Service was fine the decaf late ordered with two shots of espresso had no flavor of coffee no foam on top it was just warm milk. I was giving Cal Java a 2nd chance as I went there a few months ago to order a plain coffee they have coffee pre made in pump thermoses. I was so excited to come here for a cup of coffee this morning. I had been here before and had a pretty good experience. I stood at the counter for almost 5 minutes and the employees did not say hello or "I'll be right with you" or even acknowledge I was at the counter. The staff looked extremely exhausted and stressed. It was very depressing and I decided to leave. I am not sure what is happening in there to the employees, but I hope things get better for them. Their coffee is better than Starbucks. The service is friendly. Service is fast. They have free wireless internet. They are a local business which is nice to support. They do a frequent customer stamp card, and Tuesday is double-stamp day. The only downside is their pastries. I have now sampled about 8 different things, from scones to biscotti to breads, etc. Nothing was good, and some things were aweful. I started eating something in the shop a while back and asked if I could exchange it for something else which they graciously let me do. Also, like many local businesses in Chico, they charge to pay with plastic. Ultimately, you pay for it either way even if it's not a separate fee. But you'd think that might make their coffee cheaper than the competition. Not really the case. Overall, it's a coffee shop with good, reliable service and good coffee. Only reason I won't give 5 stars is because of the pastries. It's a coffee shop though... not a pastry shop. read more

This coffee shop used to be my favorite coffee shop in Chico until the last six months or so. There's some new girls in there and they are extremely rude and the customer service is very poor because of that. I've gone back a couple times giving him another chance thinking it will improve but today again was very awful and should never feel embarrassed when leaving there but do. Hate going here! Coffee and food are fine, but it seems like they only hire young girls and they all have total attitude! I'm sure that for many of them this is their first job, but how about teaching them some customer service skills? 90% of them are rude and can't get the order right, and , again, give attitude. Being a local I love local business. I've enjoyed good service here and he coffee is always great! However, I have to take away points by watching the owners treat their employees poorly. Somewhat disgusting to watch an employee be belittled for making an accident in front of customers. Being in management myself in a large company.... I'm so disappointed right now. I ordered an iced spiced chai with almond milk and a doppio con panna. The two baristas had no idea what that was so I explained it to them. When I got my drink she ended up using soy (which really is no big deal but still) and putting my two shots in my chai. Then when I tried explaining the two drinks I ordered yet again both baristas continued to laugh at me stating they have never heard of such a drink... Best cup of coffee in Chico, by far. No other place can beat Cal Java's quality. It sucks that they are so far away from downtown Chico (because I think they can make a killing in sales), but it is worth the drive sometimes to get a cup of what they have. The second we walked in things went south. Not only were both girls behind the counter SUPER unfriendly but the one decided to give us attitude when we couldn't hear her over a loud coffee grinder. We asked for something that was not strong and similar to the caramel frap from Starbucks. I'm well aware everyplace is different but instead she gave us something super chocolatey. Wish she knew the menu better to describe more options for us especially since we were trying to ask her questions about the drinks so we didn't leave unhappy. Ended up spending $25 on stuff that got thrown away. Super disappointed and won't be back. read more

Cards on the table, I'm a bit of a coffee snob. I like trying out different coffee shops and roasters, but I do typically make my own coffee . Had twenty minutes to kill so I decided to stop in for a cup. Can't say much about the flavored drinks here, but the pour over French roast is awful. Extremely bitter and tastes like stale old coffee beans. About the same level quality as Starbucks, and definitely a lower quality than McDonald's black coffee. Still waiting for the day when Butte county gets a decent coffee shop. In the mean time, do yourself a favor and just go to Bidwell Perk. But if you are here for a blended drink, I'm sure those would be fine; hard to mess those up. read more
