I may have discovered the most dangerous pairing in Redwood City: Costco and Outdoor Supply Hardware right next to each other. One supposedly practical errand can turn into a full Costco run followed by an accidental garden expansion. This was my second trip to OSH. On the first, I came home with four pepper plants and soil. On the second, I somehow acquired a humongous three-cubic-foot bag of soil at 50% off, lavender, thyme, basil, and one slightly unloved Trovita orange tree that was also 50% off. Charles was wonderful. He was friendly, helpful, and the two of us wrestled that gorilla-sized bag of soil into my car together, which probably qualifies as both excellent customer service and a surprise strength-training session. The Redwood City store has a great selection, plenty of tempting plants, and apparently no safeguards for new gardeners with weak boundaries. Well it appears all the bad reviews are about customer service in the hardware dept. I wasn't looking for hardware but to buy ground cover for my patch of yard that grows weeds. They have a small section that sells gardening supplies and flowers and plants. Everything was well organized. I was able to find my ground cover (something that Home Depot does not stock). Went to the cashier, no line. Paid my good and the cashier was nice enough to provide a box for my plants. I have no opinion about the prices of other goods and the customer service. This is just limited to the plant section and I was ok with that. read more

This place blows Home Depot. Out of the water at both locations we got to (East Palo Alto and San Carlos). We came in to get some paint for a project and were approached and asked about our project and the person gave us advice and recommendations and was near by to help mix the pain for us when we were ready. I came home to find out that none of the keys works, and realized with visual inspection alone that the base key they used was inappropriate. I came by this location to check out the indoor plant inventory. It is located next to Costco but has its own private parking lot. I entered and received no greeting. The store was not busy and staff could be seen walking around the entire store. I walked straight to the indoor plant area and found all the indoor plants bunched up on a table. The larger indoor plants were on the floor. I walked around and found several Rattlesnake plants on the floor and found one that looked healthy. I kept my eye on it and explored the outdoor plants. A staff was watering the plants and the aisles were drenched with water (watch your step)! There is a good inventory of outdoor plants. They had several pots and planters in stock in a variety of sizes. I went back inside and picked up the Rattlesnake plant and placed it on my cart. I asked a staff if he could point me towards the Root Hormone but he didn't know where it was and pointed me back to the indoor plant section. I did not find anything there. I walked around the store and found that it carries a variety of items for any home improvement project. I didn't find anything else of interest so I walked up to the register paid for my plant baby and left. This shopping experience at this location was poor due to the customer service (lack of greeting, help, and attention). I was never approached by a staff to offer help or recommendations on alternative products. Customer service needs to improve at this location. Being more attentive to the customers needs will ensure ongoing business. read more

I started going to the store as an alternative to big box stores like Home Depot. The big attraction was there well-maintained and organized selection of actual hardware. But as time has gone on, it has become obvious that this store is poorly managed. The last two times I've been in I have been Disappointed with unhelpful, lazy, and rude employees. They don't know much about hardware, and it shows. "Can I help you? " No, I don't think you can. I asked for the manager to give them a little feedback so that they might improve their store, but never received a phone call back when I left my name and phone number. I guess they just don't give a damn. Today, I went in to get some longer cabinet knob hardware, and the employee tried to tell me there was nothing special about cabinet knob machine screws. I told him that he was incorrect, and as a former builder, I can say with certainty there is absolutely something different about it. I even showed him the difference. He rudely gestured it to general areas of hardware and said "try over there." Maybe he should go work at Burger King. read more

I'm a contractor and Home Depot guy but I prefer to come here because it's closer and easier to get in. BUT It seems like every time I go in, I can't find what I'm looking for...!!! Since the store is large enough with the additional drive thru hut, I think it would a good business/marketing strategy to compete head to head with HD. Carry more lumber for gods, carry more of things that HD sells and carry name brand fasteners like Grabber or whatever. I won't buy the off-shore no name brand junk they sell there. If I wanted that kind of stuff, I'd go to Ace. Ace Hardware is good at what they do but when your store is big enough to compete with Home Depot, for god sake compete with Home Depot. One of the worst hardware stores I've ever been to. Would not recommend anyone to stop by the location as staff is rude. There is also a bad selection and way over priced. Most humiliating experience at a hardware store. Please skip this location and go elsewhere. I tried to buy a Stihl power pruner for Father's Day during their 20% off in-store-only anniversary sale. The power tools were mounted on the wall with a couple empty display boxes haphazardly strewn on the floor. When I asked the store manager for the product, he went to the back and returned with the items that come inside of the box. Naturally, I opened one of the empty display boxes to put the pieces inside. But he took the box from me and said I could not have the box. I told him it was a present and could possibly need to be returned. He told me no. He needed it for display (despite the tools themselves displayed on the wall - most of which had no display box). I told him I also needed it, and I was paying $150 for the product - including the box. Presumably that's how the manufacturer sells the item to the store, and how it's sold everywhere else. He told me no. Then, he refused to sell me the tool at all. Having invested over an hour, plus gas, to get the discount, my mom (who was with me) basically groveled to convince him to sell us the tool without the box. A condescending and completely unprofessional lecture followed. Is it not 2023? We (two women in a hardware store trying to buy a power tool) could not believe what had just happened. I felt completely humiliated and helpless in the store. I hope this review gives a voice to the problem here, but the other reviews about the unprofessional and rude staff show this store isn't listening. read more

I am so thrilled that OSH is back!! But this time they are known as Outdoor Supply Hardware rather than Orchard Supply Hardware. I missed OSH so much when they were closed down two years ago - they were far superior to Home Depot in their selection of irrigation parts, chicken wire and wire mesh selection, lighting and light bulbs, and tools. And it felt just the same as the old OSH when I went in today - I had no problems in finding what I was looking for, and was offered plenty of help by their staff. Oof, rude service. We came about 10 minutes before closing with a short shopping list: a set of 4 galvanized screws. We had been sent my boyfriend's family to buy them. We asked an associate if he could point us towards the screw section. Instead, he asked us what screw we needed, then immediately reprimanded us for not knowing exactly what we needed. He complained to us about a recent customer who also hadn't known what size screws he needed. The reprimanding and complaining went on and on as he walked us first to the plumbing aisles and then to the bins of screws. My boyfriend repeatedly tried to end the unpleasant discussion, from telling him to just point us to the screws, to asking him to please not lecture us, to telling him that we'd be fine looking ourselves. After what I thought were very polite attempts to get him to leave us alone, the associate finally left in a huff. All of the talking was unhelpful, besides eventually pointing us to the screws. They in fact did not have the right screw anyways, which we quickly figured out just by looking. We are decent DIYers who could use some help here and there. I can't imagine how uninviting this would be to someone who is newer to hardware stores or tackling a new project. Come here if you want to be treated as a nuisance. The store is well organized and clean. Maybe because they scare away their customers? We won't come back to figure that out. read more

Tried to return plants today 11/1 with a receipt . They were purchased on 10/1. The receipt indicated 90 day return policy. The printed policy in the store said the same. The web site now indicates a 30 day return policy. Today is the 30th day so there should have not been a problem. The assistant store manager announced that their policy was 7 days presuming the items were salable. So she refused a refund. There doesn't seem a way of knowing what return policy the store will actually honor when making a purchase... and not just of plants. Better to deal with stores that do what they said they'd do I think. I've had no trouble with, for example, Home Depot. Go there. read more

I was thrilled when in Redwood City recently to see that a new retailer had taken over the former Orchard Supply location next to Costco on Middlefield. And, l was even more thrilled to see that they had much of the same quality selection of planters & plants in the Nursery area, plus lots of tools and hardware items inside the store too! If you were once a fan of Orchard you simply must go check out this New Store! One drawback, l purchased a large rake, and when l was loading it, the handle became detached so they kindly exchanged it for me. But, when l got it home and started to use it, the same thing happened again. Upon further investigation, l saw that the screw test was meant to secure the handle in place was not aligned with the wood of the handle! Of course, l haven't been back to fix the problem, but l have a strong feeling that they are all like that. (Possibly made in China or some other place that lacks quality control?) This time, l will see what they can do for me, and possibly speak with a manager so they can remove them from inventory or glue the handles in place... or something to cure this silly problem so other customers don't end up having to make a return trip! . read more

This is the most marvelous revival of Orchard Supply Hardware one could imagine, right down to the aisle layout! Terrific selection of tools and hardware (I LOVE the open bins displaying bolts, etc), and the staff are terrific -- they clearly love working there. Best of all, between OSH's offerings and the local lumber stores, I will now be able to find everything I need without ever stepping foot in the ghastly and utterly awful Home Depot! read more
