So I've lived in Caldwell for almost three years and I've always told myself to try it at least once. Let me say that this is a really nice dinner and the staff was really friendly. However, not as attentive as I would expect for such a small place. Our server didn't return. After we got our meal and we had to flag him down for the check, but the conversation when we arrived was nice and overall pleasant. We both ordered a BLT and a side of egg. I was honestly happy that I got a side of egg or I would have felt like I was only eating tomatoes, lettuce and bread. What a great lunch!!! A lot of diners are hit or miss. This is for sure a hit! We had a burger & turkey club. I'm knocking a star because I ordered the burger medium & it was more like well. The Caldwell Diner is one that contributes to NJ diners (the places) being loved. Their menu has been updated recently, and the redecoration is welcoming. I have been there at least once a week for many years. The family that owns it manage it well and are very friendly. The waitstaff are all polite and helpful. I've never had a bad meal there! Greeted immediately and liked instantly! Local eatery with an amazing savoire faire! Everyone here knows your name and I am a regular through the week. My favorite waitress is Peggy and she always has a smile and hug for me when I get in! I always order the same thing--eggs over medium and bacon soft with NO toast. Everything is always perfect and it is breakfast so that is what it is. I had the cheesecake too and they make bakery items in house. Great that it is fresh and always there but I am not much of a sweets person. The diner is right next door to me and just a 30 second walk to warmness, home hearth and coffee. We went here last night, I got the grilled chicken wrap with roasted peppers fresh mozzarella, it was very good but it was too wet and the entire wrap fell apart before I even added the Balsamic, I told the waiter Ramiro (who was very nice) he made me a new one but it was after I already ate one half with a knife and fork because it literally fell apart! The entire family ordered wraps~ all good but mine was just to wet and fell apart! We also ordered the Zucchini sticks and mozzarella sticks! Will go back again! read more

We got two entrees take away. Called in the order. Hostess made me repeat 3-4 times. When we got the food we asked for an extra ketchup. She started to give me a hard time about am I putting ketchup on the omelette and the potatoes? WHO CARES WHAT IM USING IT ON! I've been eating here since I was a kid so whenever I go to a new diner, Caldwell Diner is always the standard to which I compare a new diner, and in all my years, nothing has ever come close in terms of the quality of food and service. Jersey Diners...kind of the base of the pyramid for places to eat in our state, but that base is an important staple to all of us here in Jersey. Seems so simple-easy to make meals, decent portions, not too expensive, and have the basics - good breakfast food, good burgers and fries and soup, good sandwiches, and good dinner food. Voila' We stopped at the Caldwell Diner recently and it was a pretty solid effort. I'm a stickler for good service and from the second we walked through the door we were treated well. We went for breakfast and didn't get anything too fancy...my son got pancaked and crispy bacon; I got a ham, spinach and cheddar omelet; and my wife got an egg-white omelet with feta, spinach, and ham. Food was great, service was fast and friendly, and the price was eggcelent (ok, that was corny). Anyway, as I've said before, the best compliment I can give is a return visit...and we will be back. read more

Small but great Jersey Diner on Bloomfield Ave. There's street parking and parking around the back, but I usually just walk from work. Food is plentiful and fresh, and a bargain at lunch. I especially like their fish and chips. I wasn't feeling well the last time I was in, and the owner, after ascertaining that the food was all right, brought me a box to take it home. The staff are all friendly and it's like everyone knows each other. You'll see people stopping at different tables, talking about their activities. I find it charming. Service is good, the food is good, home cooking with the good, old-fashioned Greek diner touch, and since it's Jersey, you can get gravy on your fries without the raise of an eyebrow. read more

I waited on line, (they have 1 ladies bathroom) When the customer came out, she warned me there was urine all over by the toilet on the floor. The Caldwell Diner is one of the better diner's I've been to. As with most diners the menu is rather large and covers off on all the breakfast/lunch/dinner basics. It has ample room and if there is a wait it's usually no more than 10-15 minutes. The wait staff we've had have always been very kind and helpful. They go out of their way to accommodate our kids if we've needed crayons or something to occupy the kids time. I prefer their breakfast to any of the other meals but that's a personal preference versus a complaint about the food. read more

After getting there and being seated we remembered Their food sucks!!! Their service sucks!! It is incredulous to me the mediocre food n service people will accept for convenience. We ordered kids French toast a California wrap n a panini with fries. Ugh we left nauseous chicken was raw smelling no concept of what fresh mozzarella looks like or they thought we didn't know what that is. Sent back French toast (won't get into it) got pancakes my daughters panini was tasteless n had processed mozzarella I know what fresh mozzarella. the best thing was the fries. Service was terrible n food cannot even be categorized as mediocre. We will not be back. It is a shame that good food and service takes a back seat to convenience -4 star read more

This is one of my favorite diners in all of New Jersey! It is a classic New Jersey diner and you need to come here. My parents live very close to the Caldwell Diner and we are constantly coming to the Caldwell Diner for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My mom and I love to walk here on a warm spring/summer day/night. The Caldwell Diner is a place where you can feel at home. All the locals here know each other and they all know the employees here too. It is such a warm and cozy environment. The waiters and waitress are also super friendly and never rush you here. The service is also great and the food comes out very quickly, even when the place is packed, which can happen quit often. The food here is also amazing. I love love love the chocolate chip pancakes, french fries, omelets, french toast, veggie burger, and almost everything else on the menu. The food is so good and very New Jersey. The prices here are also great. You are getting really good for a really good price..something I personally love! They have pretty good food. I was impressed that their main dishes were surprisingly good. So, they're doing a pretty good job with breakfast and non-traditional diner fare. The service was just so-so. They seated us promptly and took our orders in a timely fashion. However, I had to track servers down far too often to get a refill on water or to get an extra utensil, etc. Sure, they have a salad bar, but it was nothing special whatsoever. It had just the very basic ingredients and dressing. The prices are fair. Bottom line, it's a decent enough NJ diner that's not doing anything truly special to distinguish itself from the crowd, though they're doing as good a job as any, and you could certainly do worse. FYI, there is plenty of parking, but the lot is WAY towards the rear of the restaurant. You may want to drop people off by the door and go find a spot. The burgers and fries here are the big draw for me. Seriously amazing french fries. I'm sure they're very unhealthy, but they're some of the best I've ever had. The burgers are huge and come on grilled, buttery buns. The only thing I wish is that the atmosphere for was more diner-like.
