I was pretty surprised by this spot. If you're in Park Slope, check this southwestern spot out. Totally has a modern diner vibe but cook some pretty solid food. A little pricier then most Tex-mex & southwestern style restaurants in LA, but hey we're in Brooklyn. Went with the 2 taco plate with a side of rice & beans. They also include some chips & guacamole. Went with a shrimp taco & the fried chicken (because it was the first thing that jumped out at me). Heard the fish taco is the star here but I'll have to try that another time. I am not sure how any one can rate this place less then 4 stars. Seriously, the staff is beyond incredible and the food is top notch. I spent a third of my life up and down the West coast and I nearly gave up on trying to find good Mexican food in New York, but then I came across Calexico. Not only did the fish burrito meet my expectations it far exceeded it. I cannot overstate how much I love fish burritos and I've had them all over the world from seaport town to seaport town and I cannot believe that Calexico blew them out of the water. The only thing that beats the food here is the service. No fake smiles smiles here. The waiters and waitresses are incredibly courteous, kind, but most importantly real. They will always give you the straight dope. Also, mad props to Candice and Micheal, no matter the mood I come in with, they leave me smiling. Recommendations: baja fish burrito, Thai brussel sprouts, and steak fajita plate. read more

Located on the busiest food block of all of Park Slope, Calexico is fantastic place positioned in between several others. Calexico has come a long away. From food trucks to establishing itself around the city with multiple locations. The one on 5th Avenue is no different. Great food, excellent drinks, and awesome service. They have all your Mexican and Mexican American favorites. I love those fish tacos, but honestly you can't go wrong. Just as long as you get that crack sauce. As the name indicates, you'll be addicted after your first hit. The margaritas are strong and be sure to take advantage of their two for one happy hour. As most place in Park Slope are, they are kid friendly. The staff is chill. If something is going on, let them know and they'll do their best to remedy the situation. If you're in the vicinity, you'll have lots of choices. If you're in the mood for Mexican though, you can't go wrong here. read more

This place is great! I will try to visit at least once a week. The food is always fresh and full of flavor. The price of food and drinks is fairly cheap, especially for a restaurant located in Park Slope. Happy hour is buy one get one free ( not all drinks are included). They give you this cool coin, which is your token for your second drink during happy hour. You can either buy one drink and use your coin for the other. Or, you can save your coin for your next visit there. The drinks are STRONG! My friend had the shrimp bowl. He seemed to enjoy it. I had a bean burrito. I spruced it up with a few added ingredients like peppers, onions and corn. It was amazing ! The portion sizes are good. It is defiantly worth the money. Calexico is a fun enough spot with decent food but an atmosphere that reminds me a little too much of a theme restaurant. The inside is bright, flashy, fun, with booths and a nice bar. Intimate is not really a word to describe this spot, but it's fun. Most likely you came here for the food, and that is pretty decent. I would say that Calexico offers above average Mexican flair with a few unique dishes. This evening, we had the Baja fish taco and the Gringo Quesdilla. Both were excellent, flowing with flavor and good tasting ingredients. We also has the chili cilantro fries, which were just french fries with chili powder and cilantro sprinkled on top. Kinda underwhelming, but the chipotle crack sauce does kinda make up for it. Finally the service. The staff is super friendly but not always attentive. After sitting, our waitress came right to us, but we needed a few minutes to decide just drinks. It took us a while to get her attention when we were ready to order and again later when we wanted the bill. The place wasn't really busy either, she just seemed to get lost. I don't think this was just her as there were never a lot of staff out on the floor. I wouldn't call the service bar, necessarily, just not super attentive. For my usual readers, I'll say as per my usual: if you are in the area and looking for good Mexican, you won't be disappointed with Calexico. But I'm not sure if it's worth the trip if you aren't already there. read more

Just ordered Calexico off of Uber eats and was very specific about my order. I got the chicken taco meal and Carne Asada Bowl with no rice and opt for lettuce.They got everything right and even sent me a small bottle of hot sauce!!! Food tastes amazing . Thank You!! read more

Downside here was that the queso wasn't amazing. I liked the chilis and spiciness in the queso, but I didn't like the cheese itself - I expect queso to be hot and dribbling, though this one was simply warm and a little too thick (with almost a "powdery" mouthfeel to it). HUGE upside was the chicken quesadilla. I wouldn't normally expect a quesadilla to taste or look like the one I got here, which reminded me almost of a thin-crusted calzone. The quesadilla was thick and tasted a little like a pizza, but the tortilla was perfectly, tightly wrapped around the inside and the outside of the tortilla was nicely seared so to be crispy. I was definitely craving a good, hearty brunch, and Calexico delivered. Hard. We arrived in that magical window between 11:30 and noon and got seated even before our full party was there. By the time we left around 1pm, there was a line waiting to get in. While it was tough to choose what to order, I was relieved to know everyone at the table was ordering something just as awesome sounding as what I ordered. Though my pork hash was definitely the best. The slow-cooked pork hash included potatoes and two eggs with salsa and tortillas. It was truly magic in my mouth. Also super awesome was the Baja Fish, which included a spicy slaw, mango salsa, and their "crack" sauce. It was huge and delicious. Ambiance was chill, and I appreciate how we weren't rushed out even though they were getting busy. My only regret was not getting a brunch cocktail, because their concoctions look great and include the classics and some unique combinations. I'd trust them with my drink! read more

The staff (a guy) from the pick up area and the one who took my order was not very good. I only ordered for 2 tacos and I waited for 30 minutes in the same spot. I figured that they were busy but it turned out that the staff was not paying attention to his customers. I felt so impatient that I approached him again. It turned out that my order has been ready for a while and he didn't bother calling/informing me about it. I left the restaurant feeling so disappointed with their poor customer service. Loved their shrimp burrito ! I tried their strawberry margarita for the first time and I was impressed. I love how they mashed up fresh strawberries and added a strawberry to the tip of the cup. The fish tacos here are tasty, and they have a good ginger mule beverage here. I have to admit, I've never been here for dinner. I've been here for lunch on almost every day of the week. Lunch special: two tacos, rice and beans, chips and a takeout cup of guacamole. Not a bad deal for a sit down place - because really...who enjoys sitting in Chipotle for lunch? The ambiance during lunch time is nice. Something about it just isn't my favorite. I'm not exactly sure what it is. Never seem to be able to grow a relationship with the wait staff here. Doesn't feel like a local neighborhood place that is very welcoming. Restroom is very spacious (great for a stroller). Crayons are provided for young ones. After waiting several minutes to be seated when I arrived, I finally asked one of the waiters if my friend and I could be seated and he looked like he had no idea what to do. He did seat us and was our waiter and was great. However, when we needed water or our plates cleared, none of the other servers would give us the time of day except him. Came here on a Tuesday night (it was national taco day, so I really needed a taco). Decided to try this place. The decor of the restaurant is really cool. I was loving it right away. Restaurant was not crowded at all but there were some people there. I got a mango margarita and I have to say it was really good! We order of guacamole and chips. I have to say that the guac was disappointing. It was a bit too bland for me and there was too much lime juice. I got the fish and chicken taco. They were both pretty good although the chicken was a bit salty. I just need them to improve upon the guacamole, it left me a bit sad. read more

The long line out the door got my attention. Their food must be amazing!? We put down our names and went across the street for a drink. Ran back when we received a text from them, but somehow our table was canceled? Others were having the same problem, but the manager was professional and gave us the next table open. A group of 3 girlfriends and I came to Calexico for a Saturday night dinner and drinks and were not disappointed. We waited less than ten minutes for a table, which is not bad at all considering it was peak Saturday night dining and they don't take reservations. The guac was solid and all of their specialty drinks were "pretty" and tasted great, not to mention a pretty good deal on the margarita pitchers! On weekends, they have bogo happy hour after 10. Although you can't split with a friend, you do get a chip which you can't bring back at any time to redeem an unfinished drink deal. We ended up getting a couple of tacos each. I was impressed to find they were pretty decent size for the price, two filled each of us (try the Baja fish - it was great!) after eating a fair amount of chips and guac. I went today with my daughter to eat at Calexico's 5th avenue location for brunch. Interestingly it's more expensive and has a different menu than the red hook location. And imho a far inferior menu for what you get. My daughter got 2 vegetarian tacos that were $10 apparently, and I ordered the carne asada burrito. Calexico doesn't really do authentic Mexican so the carne is pretty ok and a safe bet. when our food finally arrived I was met with a burrito that was all rice, barely any pico or beans and a marginal amount of carne asada, even for calexicos small portions. So under enthused but hungry I dug in and boy I tell you! I've had more flavorful turkey wraps from a midtown deli! I doused it in hot sauce hoping something would taste like anything to no avail. 3/4 of the way into it and gave up even though I hit a scarce pocket of meat. The wait person asked me if everything was ok to which I replied "eh, no" to which I described the warm water I had earlier in the day that had more flavor. She was awesome though and she talked to the managers and took the burrito off the bill and told me they had new cooks. They also gave us some poker chips to redeem for drinks. They tried hard to make good, so they get points for that just not for the food. the customer service gets 5 stars the food gets the 1 star. read more

Food is great, staff are nice. Logistics could have been better. My only issue with the venue is I have never seen a restuarant that had a packed waiting room/lobby with a 10-20 minute wait with half the tables empty. They are very inefficient. Expect to have a short wait despite half the restaurant being empty (besides the lobby). Additionally, when we were finally seated they did not allow us to extend the table when we had a 5 person party as extensions are only for 6-7 people, but did not allow the 5th person to sit at the end of the table. They eventually accomadated us with a proper table... the food is pretty good, staff are nice and once you are seated it's a decent experience. Tacos are a bit overpriced with 5-6 dollars for a single taco. read more

SHORT CHANGED I was very disappointed this week to find out that your Park Slope location short changes its customers. I paid in cash and when I didnt get the correct amount of change back was told this location only deals in quarters and they round up. This is not the case sine my change should have been $0.31 but i only received $0.25. I know it is only 6 cents difference but I also know the value of a dollar and work hard for my money and expect to get back the correct amount of change owed to me. Knowing now this is Calexico's policy I will not be returning ever again. There are too many other restaurants in the area to return to one who doesn't treat their customers right and are banking extra money that isn't theirs to begin with. read more

Mexican food is not one of the things that I crave. But I crave Calexico. Everything here is spot on--the drinks, the food, and the overall likeable atmosphere. Yes, this normally means you'll find young families with children, next to a table of a bunch of young, rowdy folks ready for a full night of drinking, but that's just a regular crowd at Calexico. Everything here is pretty tasty--burritos, Guacomole, etc. the quesadillas are my FAVORITE because I find that it's the perfect portion, and they're grill pressed down to make them easier to grab and eat (and even tastier!) So whether you're a rowdy crowd pregaming before a crazy night, or you're just trying to get some dinner--Calexico is most definitely the place for you. read more

The Cali Burrito is just gross. It's loaded with beans that taste incredibly bland, combined with fries inside for filler that add to the bland taste. There's meat there but you don't taste it because the bean paste overwhelms it. I've had bean burritos before that I liked but this made me not want to order a burrito ever again. Pretty good Mexican food here! The portions are tremendous and they have a wide selection of entrees and drinks. The waiter was super sweet when we walked in. The restaurant was empty and he allowed us to choose our seats. He was very bubbly and gave us plenty of time to decide what to order. Food portions are humongous. The burritos are really a fistful. I don't know if I could finish one of those. It was decently priced and you get a lot for what you pay for. My friend ordered the chipotle pork burrito I believe and it was like the size of two fists. My other friends ordered baja fish bowl and nachos. The nachos could definitely be an entree itself. Or it could be an appetizer for like 6 people. That plate was like a full bag of tortilla chips. In my opinion, they drizzled a little too much sour cream though, so while I wasn't the biggest fan, it was quickly devoured by others. The baja fish bowl is topping with mangoes and it is surely one of the more refreshing choices. The fish is fresh and tastes really well with their sauce. I ordered a carne asada bowl and it was pretty good. They drizzle avocado sauce over it that is slightly spicy, but gives a good kick to it. The hanger steak was a little dry, but when you mixed the bowl together, it made it much better. I had an enjoyable experience here and I would recommend you stop by. Incredibly yummy tacos all around! Only con is the drinks are small and a bit overpriced. Prepare to wait when you walk-up so plan ahead!

We were a fairly large group (10 people), which is always a challenge to seat without a reservation especially for a restaurant that has a first-come first-serve policy (no reservations). Our estimated wait time fluctuated between 30 and 60 minutes but luckily we were able to chill at the take-out corner by the entrance and even order a pitcher to drink. Our waiter was very accommodating and did his best to get us all together. They don't allow seats to be added to the large Hola booth in the back (seats 7-8 people), which was a bummer. Eventually they were able to move 4 tables together for us. Service was great and attentive throughout our dinner. Definitely try the nachos and fries! The sauce was addicting - it had a mixture of beans, cheese, guacamole, and who knows what! Portions are on the large side. Ambience and food was perfect for a group outing! Really really meh experience. Came here for the Happy Hour (4-7) Buy 1 get 1 free drafts, well drinks and house margaritas. Waitress practically ignored us. Maybe because it was the tail end of happy hour, idk, because it definitely wasn't cause the place was busy. We basically had to beg for a second drink. It was crazy! Bus boy comes around clearing away the dishes from the FIRST round and we have to ask HIM for another round! Wtf? Food was ok. Got the steak fajita -- smelled promising but was just a plate full of disappointment. The steak was BURNED so it was very bitter. Thought maybe it was just a one time accident but my boyfriend got the same order and his was burned as well. It comes with a teeny tiny side of guac/sour cream/salsa all in one little cup (not enough for the 4 tortillas) And a side of rice and beans -- pretty sure the bean came straight from the can. Each platter is $15. Also got the chip & salsa for $7. The green salsa just tasted like spicy lime juice ... Red one taste like chopped tomato. No kick to it. Chips were nice and crispy though!
