Incredibly yummy tacos all around! Only con is the drinks are small and a bit overpriced. Prepare to wait when you walk-up so plan ahead!

We were a fairly large group (10 people), which is always a challenge to seat without a reservation especially for a restaurant that has a first-come first-serve policy (no reservations). Our estimated wait time fluctuated between 30 and 60 minutes but luckily we were able to chill at the take-out corner by the entrance and even order a pitcher to drink. Our waiter was very accommodating and did his best to get us all together. They don't allow seats to be added to the large Hola booth in the back (seats 7-8 people), which was a bummer. Eventually they were able to move 4 tables together for us. Service was great and attentive throughout our dinner. Definitely try the nachos and fries! The sauce was addicting - it had a mixture of beans, cheese, guacamole, and who knows what! Portions are on the large side. Ambience and food was perfect for a group outing! Great spot to have a few food and drinks with your friends. I came here for brunch. The breakfast quesadilla was one of the best breakfast quesadillas I've ever had. The pieces of bacon in there was smoky and savory. It comes with a side of potatoes and crack sauce. The side of potatoes was not special. Carne fries were delicious and had a tex mex style and taste to it. The brisket hash with eggs was nice and hearty. I would avoid the mango house margarita, as mine was nothing special. One of my favorite go-to places in the area whether with kids and friends or just friends. Happy hour (before 7) margaritas--buy one get a chip to cash in for another any time. Margaritas are excellent. Food is great--staff is best around: efficient, super friendly (earnest, not fawning). Bartenders sometimes rotate onto the floor which is nice. Burrito bowls are perfect: the right amount of food, delicious; quesadillas + side of broccoli perfect for kids. The Cali Burrito is just gross. It's loaded with beans that taste incredibly bland, combined with fries inside for filler that add to the bland taste. There's meat there but you don't taste it because the bean paste overwhelms it. I've had bean burritos before that I liked but this made me not want to order a burrito ever again. If they make other food that is good why would they ever put this on the menu? read more

This place is perfect. Yeah, yeah, it's definitely more on the tex-mex side of things than true Mexican, but I don't care about that. I've had a great time and a delicious meal every time I've come here. The chips, salsa, and guacamole are all really good. Normally I don't go and order guacamole as an appetizer because it's more expensive, but this one is worth every penny. It's especially citrusy, with copious amounts of lime juice. The fajitas are a relatively new addition to the menu, within the last year, and they are like what Chili's wishes they could serve. And the rolled quesadilla bears special mention. I ordered in. The guy I spoke to was super nice, sweet and patient with my questions and favor. One of the most delicious Mexican places I've ever tried. I recommend coming here. I tried the Baja fish burrito bowl, carne asada burrito bowl, the elote and nachos. I love Baja fish anything and for my husband the carne asada. The nachos are one of a kind. The cheese is delicious and different compared to the nachos from other places. This is my new favorite Mexican spot. I don't know what's wrong with the people giving this 2 or 3 stars. It's one of our favorite restaurants in the area. Start with chips and salsa, and the jalapeño poppers (seriously you need to try these). Order just about anything else and you'll be happy. Some of my favorites are the Carne Asada Tacos, the cheese quesadilla with steak, and the breakfast burrito. I agree with the guy below about the staff. I came in with a horrible attitude one day and was short with the staff. They gave us a seat at the bar and gave my wife and I a free drink. As I drank my jalapeño margarita (yum), I realized A. I'm an asshole, and B. they actually care about their guests and the experience they have. It made me appreciate this place even more. I have been in Park Slope for 30 Years and frequented Calexico since it opened. I was just there for lunch sitting outside and there was a patron who was screaming at the top of his lungs in his storytelling to his lunch mates. He was screaming Motherfucking and Motherfucker so many times I cant count. I asked him to please lower his rant so that I could have my lunch in peace, and it became such a challenge that I requested my lunch be packed up to leave. What concerns me is that it was not my place to address this. It was management. They did nothing. Reprehensible. read more

So I wrote one of the first reviews when the 5th Ave Calexico opened. I raved about it. Well, things have changed. We've been ordering delivery on a weekly basis for several years. The food is still good (if inconsistent in terms of quality, quantity, and getting the order right). Calexico always been slow with delivery, but as it got ever worse, we learned to place the order an hour before we wanted to eat; even then, it often took longer than that to get our food. But now it's beyond the pale. Tonight we ordered at 6:30. The delivery est was 8. That was bad enough, but now it is after 8:45 and Calex says they have NO IDEA when our food will be delivered! Our burritos are apparently ready but just sitting there, getting cold and soggy. This is the third time it has taken more than two hours to get a small order delivered. Calex says it's because they're dependent on drivers from Grubhub, Seamless, etc., and the drivers just don't come. Calexico, there must be some way to fix this. I order directly through your site, but the order goes to a third-party delivery service. You used to have your own delivery people (bring Sal back!). Can you please, please go back to that model? Or at least have it as an option? So - we just cancelled our order. Our evening plans have been effed up - again - by your inability to perform perhaps the most critical part of the delivery process: actually getting the food to the customer. We love your food and want to keep supporting you, but this is not how you run a business or treat people, and we can't keep taking this gamble every week of not knowing when - or even if - we'll be eating. At least it will be less busy as you lose long-standing, patient, loyal customers. read more

Great music and nice atmosphere. Came here during a quiet afternoon. Didn't have the drinks but they sound great. I had the Tostada Salad with chicken and it's delicious. Highly recommend. Boyfriend got the fried chicken taco special and baja fish taco. Both were very yummy. read more

We were really excited to try Calexico based on the recommendation of two different friends. However, we were really disappointed by the food and our experience. After we placed our order, we ended up waiting almost an hour for our food. We watched a large group of people arrive 40 minutes after we did and they got their order within 5 minutes. We had to check in 3 times before we got any real response. And, when we finally got our food, not only was there not an apology for the delay in our order, the server was extremely rude about it. We were hoping the food would make up for the total lack of customer service. But, it was beyond mediocre. If you are thinking of going here, I would suggest Fonda instead! read more

Tacos were decent for the price but definitely lacking a star for lacking the liquor menu!!! Baja fish vs Carne Asada Fish wins. Better sauces, better flavors, and better texture. Carne Asada was slightly chewy and flavor wasn't 100% IMO. I've def had better. They do serve with your choice of rice & beans or salad on the side when you order tacos...so not a bad deal. I came here for dinner with a friend. We shared chips and guac, and both ended up ordering baja fish burritos. With margaritas of course. Food was delicious. Margaritas were strong and tasty. They have happy hour (2 for 1 margaritas) on weekdays 4-7pm. Staff is friendly and attentive. I've also been to the Greenpoint location. This makes me so sad to write this as Calexico used to be my favorite local spot. After a few months on hiatus, I returned to find the menu totally changed - and substituted via yuppy infused trash. Their carne asada bowl used to be heaven - they changed it to include a disgusting vegan like sauce, radishes for "garnish", and tortilla strips to unnecessarily add more carbs. I've ordered the asada bowl close to 30 times across the greenpoint and park slope locations. After this last order - Never. Again. Do yourselves a favor and go a bit farther to Fonda in south slope - or literally anywhere else. Change is not always a good thing, Calexico. read more

This is a great cross between real Mexican food and Tex-Mex. They definitely aren't messing around. The ingredients are consistently fresh. The service is very friendly and efficient. Delivery time is always under 30mins for me. And if you want to eat in and are with a baby, they have stroller parking :) Food: They make one of the Best and unique tasting burritos I have ever had (and I've tried LOTS of burritos)!! And if you want to save on carbs, you can get a bowl instead of a wrap. So if you're in the mood for healthy Mexican food, definitely give this place a try and don't forget to try their own "crack sauce"! It's basically a chipotle sauce with a unique twist. It tastes soooo good with any meal! Anyway this is definitely one of my favorite Mexican places in the city.. The owners are 3 brothers who started out as a food cart in SoHo I believe, and quickly blossomed into a few brick & mortar locations -- with zero loss in quality. I visited Calexico around 2pm on a Saturday so they had their brunch menu available. My wife got the cheese grits and a fish taco and I got the fish burrito. The fish was flaky and flavorful and the cheese grits were soooo good. We also got a starter of guacamole. I had read from some other reviews that Calexico charges for extra chips but, luckily, we had more than enough for the two of us and the guacamole. As far as drinks, I got the "Tequila Mockingbird" which wasn't particularly flavorful (other than tequila). Oh, I should have told you that I love me a sweet, girly drink. This wasn't it. My wife got the King something...I can't remember the name, but it was sweeter and better. read more

Terrible service here. We stopped by and were seated by an employee, then a second employee came and said we can't sit there and we had to wait on the list. We agreed and got up from the table, then the woman who was going to put us on the list disappeared. A third employee came outside and started putting other parties on the list despite the fact that we were there first, and seated. came here for take out and had a long wait tim for two tacos. I ordered the fried chicken taco which had too much breading and was rather bland. Once i added hot sauce it was better but i cant judge it on that bc it did not come that way. I also ordered baja fish taco which was not flavorful enough it also needed hot sauce to make it work. The rice and beans are excellent and the tacos are amazing. The fried chicken taco is especially incredible. I wish I'd ordered 2. I don't regret getting the pork taco though. I don't think you can go wrong with their tacos. The only problem was the service. I think it was a host or manager who eventually took our orders, and I'm not sure why our server--who did eventually emerge--couldn't since it was the middle of the day on a week day and there were few people there. Ive been coming here for a very long time. Recently I've noticed they slowly started changing and not for the better. They raised their prices and in exchange the quality went down. Before they would give you free chips and salsa when you sat down but not anymore. When I asked the waiter he even stated "we never did that" which seriously made me doubt existence itself and after asking a few friends they all agreed with me that they did give it out before. Before you would get a very small side salad or a few chips along with some dishes but not anymore. The drinks aren't that good anymore and aren't worth the $13 price tag. They charge you $4 extra for things that should normally come with plates. The protein content is drastically lower than before which you will notice if you used to go there before. This was a pretty good Tex mex spot (this is NOT Mexican food!) and hopefully they will be good again. I'll end this with stating that one fucking taco is $4-6! read more

Had a decent dinner here the other night. Server was very friendly and attentive. Food and drinks arrived quickly. It's very loud and a little cramped, so be prepared to sit very close to other tables. Tacos are tasty and filling. Carne asada taco was very spicy. Baja fish bowl was excellent, but wish there was less spicy slaw. The spice builds and becomes overpowering. It's a generous portion size. Would not recommend the frozen strawberry margarita. It was a plain margarita with some thick strawberry sauce on the bottom of the glass. Couldn't taste the strawberry at all, only an overpowering tequila flavor. Additionally, the strawberry sauce gets clumpy and you end up with chunks in the drink. They put a ton of salt on the outside of the glass, not just the rim, so you end up covered in salt. read more

If you are looking for a great Mexican place, this the place. They offer great service and the food is very tasty. I love the nachos and the fish tacos! The crunchiness of the fish along with the softness of the taco leaves me yearning for it on taco Tuesday! The parking is pretty difficult as its only metered, and unless its Sunday you feed the meter. Cash and credit accepted. To-go is not as great as when you sit down as the freshness seems to take a hit, and the nachos are not as crunchy crunchy and fresh as things get soggy because they don't separate the ingredients. Full bar, no television. Definitely a place to go if you are in the area. read more
