The banh mi bread was so fresh and perfectly toasted. Fillings were so delicious and flavorful. Also tried the surf and turf spring rolls which was a little different but still good. Loaded with shrimp but the meat was not like sliced steak but more of minced then cooked after being molded together. The owner was super friendly and sweet! Cali Banh Mi did a great job of renovating the former space occupied by Muscle Mill Grill on Garnet Ave. The updated light fixtures and new paint inside made a big difference to the ambiance as it felt cozier than before. If you aren't heading westbound on Balboa Ave, then a better option to arrive here would be to pull into the McDonald's driveway on Mission Bay Dr and then park in the corner adjacent to the outdoor patio of this suite. There were four reserved parking spaces for CBM in that area. The menu was surprisingly extensive with traditional Vietnamese, American deli style, and breakfast banh mi sandwiches available in addition to boba drinks, spring rolls, salads, energy and Cali bowls, fried rice, and desserts. I ordered the classic Shrimp and Pork Spring Rolls along with a savory BBQ Pork Vietnamese Banh Mi. Each item was a good value for the serving size. A standard peanut dipping sauce came with the spring rolls. The banh mi was on a legitimate French baguette and not some other type of bread. The outdoor patio doubled the on-site seating capacity and was a feature that the other CBM locations don't have. You may have to take a circuitous route if you are coming from a particular direction (e.g. north or west). Otherwise, it's great to have a Vietnamese sandwich shop in this neighborhood so you don't have to drive to their Convoy District or Point Loma locations. read more

My first time here and upon stepping in, liked the interior and the hanging egg chairs were a nice touch. They also have a nice outdoor dining area. Good selection on the menu that included bahn mi, bowls and other items. I guess I am not used to this type of pricing for bahn mi so was a little surprised by the cost ($9). But it's more of an upscale bahn mi with a california influence, hence the name I guess. I did really enjoy the chicken bahn mi, it had great flavor and it was bigger than I thought. Usually I go to the Convoy location but I was in the area so I ordered some food for pick up. They're really quick with their to-go orders which is really nice. I always order the surf and turf Bahn mi and spring rolls. I think compared to the other location, this one doesn't give as much meat. The Bahn mi didn't have a lot of meat and was mostly veg. The surf and turf spring rolls only had 3 tiny shrimp per roll as well. Though this is the case, the lemongrass rib eye has so much flavor and is a great protein option. This place was disappointing. It really fell short of expectations. I personally got the sautéed tofu banh mi and the tofu was bland and weirdly spongy, the pickled veggies didn't have a strong flavor at all, and the bread was super soft. The soft bread could be a plus for some but this bread just didn't feel fresh. When I get good banh mi, I want the pickles to be so strong that it stinks up my car and is on bread that has a crunch exterior that might cut up my mouth. My friend got a meat option and said it was nothing special, just fairly basic. I also didn't really appreciate the americanized banh mi option, I'm there for authentic flavor, not a store that's trying to fit in. I also had the Vietnamese coffee and it fell short as well. This is the worst banh mi sandwich I've ever had in my life, and I am Viet. The bread was undercooked and got soggy from the (what i think was) mayo. The chicken was grilled with no seasoning or flavor. The veggies were pickled but surprisingly with no flavor. (How does that even happen?). Love this super low key spot for dine in or takeout. Although we mostly do takeout we've sat on the back patio and inside once and found the restaurant to be nice, clean and very chill. Vegetarian options, love the tofu bowl with cilantro lime dressing. The service is always quick and friendly. Kids & husband love the steak bowls and bahn mi sandwiches. Fun that they also serve baguettes, a nice treat for the kids. The veggie spring rolls w/ peanut sauce are also delicious. I'd say any of their sauces are worth trying! Had this delivered to my work and I was pretty disappointed, coming from someone who grew up eating Banh Mi probably once a week. I ordered my usual banh mi dac biet (cured meat selection) which is typically filled with ham, pork, spread of liver pate, mayonnaise, pickled veggies, fresh veggies and herbs. The sandwich I got here had a small sliver of meat and a TON of picked carrots, all chopped up in tiny pieces. That was odd in my opinion because all the bits just fall out. I came with my mom and we had the surf in turf plate. She chose her base rice and mine were greens. The place served a big portion of food for the plate, we both didn't finish our plate but the quality of taste was full of flavor from the meat and the shrimp.
