The best Cuban sandwich I have ever tasted . Hands down not even close. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the drink situation. Once you order a drink it is very difficult to get another drink due to the line and set up. You may have to gamble and get 2 sodas at once even though you may not drink it there. CASH ONLY! My friends and I came here for dinner on a Sunday night and there was a line out the door. We waited probably half an hour before we got to the ordering counter. I ended up getting the los fish taco and fish taco tropical with a side of fried plantains. The both fish tacos were delicious, but I preferred the los fish taco. The fish taco tropical comes on a lettuce and it was really challenging to pick up and eat like a taco. I also got to try my friends' yuca fritas and those were delicious as well. They tasted like fries with more texture. The ambiance here is festive! They have lots of outdoor seating and play great music. The food is ten stars - oh so good! The reason for four is the long wait in line to order food. If the restaurant added an extra register for customers, the line would move a lot faster. Have a snack before you arrive and bring The NY Times Sunday crossword, because it might be 30 minutes or more before you reach the counter. We ordered tacos, a Cuban sandwich, queso, fries, and two other menu items I can't recall the names of but they were yummy. Their salsa is the best I've ever had, and the queso has a unique flavor to it which added to its deliciousness. The Cuban was different than your run of the mill sandwich with tons of meat and a wonderful bread. It reminded me of a Philly cheesesteak but with pork. Luckily half of it went home in a to-go box to enjoy for later. Masks were required while in line (and worn by staff), and I also appreciate the eco friendly products Cali N Tito's uses. My love for Cali N Tito's runs deep. When I was in college at UGA aka Georgia this place was a hidden gem. Way back in the day this place used to be called Caliente Cab and it had so much character and charm. It was located in a different location a little farther from the campus but worth the drive. When you pulled up to the rocky driveway and saw this remote setting of a little restaurant it allowed you to escape to a little island getaway before finals and a place to celebrate after finals. There was also a cool little trail and a running little river/creek that you can see while you ate outside. Man...I sure miss that spot. You forgot for a good dining minute while you were dining there that it was next to a gas station. Fast forward several years and they reopened off of Lumpkin which used to be a spot for another Athens eatery. The food is still very good and they transferred that fun flair to the current location and outdoor eating area. The atmosphere back then and now is still very fun and eclectic. You can't help but be in a good mood when you chill and eat outside. They have a small section inside for those that want to eat indoors but trust me when I say the action and spot to be at is the outside eating area filled with picnic tables, fun decorations, and music. Note- The largest amount of seating is outside. So back to the food. A couple of my favs... -Cuban sandwich (their version is definitely one of my favs). Their cubanos (all of the ones they offer on the menu) are good. My fav is probably the chicken cubano. A lot of my friends like the one with steak. -tostones and the sauce that comes with it. (That sauce is soooooo good! Save the sauce to eat with your other food. -fries are cooked to perfection. (Again, save that sauce I mentioned above to dip your fries in) -fish tacos- So good!! This restaurant did have a really cute outside area that would be good for big groups or family's. The food is pretty good but the prices are a little bit higher than I would expect. I think they recently raised them. It also took us almost 45 minutes to order and then another 25 minutes to get our food. Instead of getting a Peruvian seasoned piece of chicken with rice and stir fried vegetables, I got Chinese style fried rice with egg and tiny pieces of egg and chicken, served in a Chinese take out box and a spoon. No fork. I was in the mood for Latin food, not Chinese. If I wanted Chinese food, I would have gone to the Chinese restaurant up the street. After-all, they would have made this dish better. Some co-workers and I were visiting Athens for a conference and wanted to try something unique and local, so were intrigued when we saw this Cuban/Peruvian spot. This is a very casual place with a laid-back vibe and a hodgepodge of random and quirky decor. I wanted to try a new dish, so ordered the El Sandwich Criollo (traditional Peruvian pork sandwich), along with the classic chips and salsa. I ordered at the counter and the food was brought to my table within 10 minutes. Their salsa was great and both it and the chips tasted fresh. The pork was very flavorful and the bread/fried plantains added the perfect crunch to go along with it. It tasted pretty authentic and not like what you might find at a typical Tex-Mex restaurant. The only downside was that they had run out of drinking water for the day (so tap water was the only option) and it's cash only. My friends and I drove over an hour here just for dinner. And then we drove back very, very satisfied. I had some of the best!!! tacos I've ever had. I had a chicken and a chorizo taco. The chicken was well seasoned and the chorizo was phenomenal. Honestly wish I'd gotten another one. I really liked how they had cabbage on the tacos instead of the usual lettuce. It added a nice bite to the taco. I also had the Maduros! They were really, really good and I could tell they were very fresh. For how low the price is, you get really high quality food! Don't worry the bathrooms were a ok outside by the back. Parking may get hard when it gets packed here so get here before lunch hour and also this place is CASH ONLY so they prepared a handy ATM in the corner for those of you plastics lovers like me. So I got the fish tacos which I thought for 3.50$ were solid. Not greasy and crispy but had a refreshing relish on top of their fish. Very good. Veggie empanadas was a little too thick on the wrapper and too heavy on the bell pepper for me but may please someone else. Lots of oil in this so don't get it if you were trying for something healthy. My friends had the beef sandwiches and they definitely loved it. It's first on the main entree menu. Comes worth fries that were huge. Service was good and the cashier was nice. Crowd was chill and you can show up in your pajamas or gym clothes for a good bite to eat. Lemonade watered down and ice tea were available. Oh if it's your birthday the one on cedar shoals apparently gives you something fun so if you wanna turn up, go there. The line was literally out the door on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30/2PM. The line took exactly 30 minutes, but we were mildly entertained puppy watching and examining the unique piñata decor. I ordered a fish taco, a chorizo taco, and a side of sweet fried plantains. I chose to get water, which you can serve yourself via the yellow keg and pipe... Which was very off putting to me. The tacos were awesome! Wish there was a bit more fish but I downed those tacos without pause. I was starving and ready for some food. My favorite part of the meal had to be the sweet fried plantains. It came with a twist on thousand island sauce, but I felt the plantains sat well enough on their own. They were hot and sweet and slightly crisp on the thin fried outer layer. Definitely worth a try! Now that I'm working on my last kid getting through college, was here today checking out the campus and my son loves the steak cuban here. This is is a great spot near the Frat houses and a cash only spot suited for students. No booze but byob... Great tables outside to site on can get hot in the summer but good all around. The choices here are cuban, american latin twist with empanadas and sandwiches that are inexpensive but farm to table fresh meats and veggies. Great atmosphere, and a dive kind of college place that takes me back in time. My son loves the steak cubana- not a press/cuban- but a great overall sub type of beast. Plantains - fried are quite good and a good cold coke top it off. We come here often and enjoy the food before we hit our other favorite places in Athens when in town for a game or just over for the day. Highly recommend you check this place out. read more
