I've heard good things about California Fish Grill, so I decided to take my wife here for the first time. We went on a Saturday around 1:30 PM and it was a full house. They have self-ordering kiosks, which is fine in theory, but when you're a first timer and there are a lot of options, it slows everything down. The 4 groups ahead of us took forever. About 15 minutes into just waiting to order, I was honestly getting frustrated and almost walked out. But then things turned around. A cashier opened up a register, and I was able to order directly with a staff member. Shoutout to Jovanni who helped us out. Super helpful, gave good recommendations, and got our order done in under 2 minutes. Funny how the "old school" way was way faster than all those machines. Now the food... this is where they redeemed themselves. The garlic butter giant shrimp plate was flavorful and cooked well. Sides like the brussels sprouts, asparagus, and sweet potatoes were all on point. Everything came together nicely and definitely saved the experience. Only downside was the ahi tuna. It was supposed to be seared rare, but came out overcooked, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, rough start but strong finish. I just wanted to do an update review. Today my husband and the kids wanted to try something new. They have never been and it's been a while since my last visit. And I will say, they improved... even when they messed up big time, they corrected it. Let me explain. First, very clean, open, & lively. However, i don't like that there are no trash cans anywhere! I appreciate the fact they have "bus boys & girls" but they're not around enough... they're tables were dirty and have napkins, and I tried to clean it myself after we orders and the self order kiosk, but I had to wait 10 minutes after sitting down for someone to finally come by and ask if they can take the trash left by the previous costumers. Then, we got the food in decent time (20 minutes) for how busy it was, and it was good food, until... My daughter took a bite of her chicken and a thick, black, 2 inch curly hair came out... my daughter has blonde hair... and even with that, the hair literally have the fry mix baked onto it still when I showed the chef at the pass, so you can clearly tell it went in the fryer that way. But he made it right, he ordered us a brand new dish. With that though, our food was pretty good. We got the two fried fish flatter, two crispy fish taco platter, & lobster roll. The lobster roll is overpriced for how little lobster was in it (but in all fairness-who isn't cheap anymore when it comes to filling rolls with lobster), the fish itself was really crispy, but it lacked seasoning and lightness. And the best thing was the fish tacos because it at least came with the slaw, radishes, and sauce with tortillas. Been coming here for years and I have to say one of the better options for coastal/ sea food options. The salmon salad is the way to go with brussel sprouts. We love coming here! But just for to go.. the only reason for the 4 stars is for the service. We came in for a quick bite, and wanted to sit outside. I just wasn't sure if they'd call our name out or how it works. My family and I have been going to this location for several years. The last two or three visits, however, have been very disappointing. The servers in this location are generally not very friendly, they are impatient, and when you ask for something it feels like they're doing you a favor. We waited about 20 minutes i'm not such a busy day. I had to ask them to reheat half of our order because it was warm at best. The brussels sprouts were overcooked and burnt. If for being a higher in fast food fish restaurant, it is not clean at all. Most of the tables are dirty and you had to wait until one of the servers that was standing around doing nothing would come and eventually clean a table for guest. I hope that this fish grill can get it together again like it used to be , I'm not sure if this is owner operated or franchise but whoever is the top boss should come in and check things out. This is the place to go to if you are looking for good seafood at a fair price. Today i had their fish and chips/shrimp combo which is less than $14. It was very good. The service here is helpful and friendly. I've been here numerous times and have always had a positive experience. The only complaint I have is the parking situation . Tasty fish with good sides. I ordered the salmon and swai combo, not knowing what swai was and I was very surprised at how good it was. It was a buttery and light white fish that I liked even more than the salmon, and the salmon was great. I got the teriyaki sauce which was also very light, not the typical thick sauce. Sadly the CFG closer to us (Palm Desert) has permanently closed. After a long fishing trip (with no luck), I was craving fish. Thankfully this was on the way after leaving Big Bear. The Sea Bass ($15.99) was delicious, it was so flavorful even with our choice of sauce on the side. The plain fries (free side) were fine. I wish we tried the Volcano fries, they looked tastier. Extra sauce on the side means they fill up the little plastic container to the top, regular is about halfway. Definitely recommend extra on the sweet chili glaze. It reminds me of the Thai dipping sauce Mae Ploy. I tried the Wild Rockfish ($12.99), recommended by an employee. It was decent, it was a very mild (more bland) taste. If I were to order it again, I'd probably have it with the sweet chili glaze on it and not on the side. The Cajun sauce in the container had some separation and was very buttery tasting. We ordered a shrimp skewer ($3.99) on the side, which paired well with the Cajun sauce on it. The Fire Roasted Street Corn ($2.50 side upgrade) was worth it. The blend of green onions, cilantro and crumbled cheese was delicious with it. The white rice (free side) was a must since we usually have it with all our entrees. We also got a cup for a fountain drink ($3.50). I'd recommend to just buy mango juice from Costco. Their Mango Juice ($4.75, or $5.12 after tax) said out of stock in the self service kiosk.
