Having the best pho of my life while visiting my parents in Iowa was NOT on my 2024 bingo card. California Pho hit it out of the park today over lunch. Located in a shopping center off of west Kimberly, California Pho was top tier. We shared coconut shrimp, egg rolls and steamed dumplings for starters and various pho dishes, fried rice, Mongolian beef and of course a banh mi with grilled pork. 10/10 delicious and freshly prepared. My mom actually got the referral while in the nail salon (who I believe the family owns as well). Staff was very friendly and would 100% recommend this Vietnamese family owned restaurant. Ate here for the first time with my coworkers. I didn't think I would find a Vietnamese restaurant anywhere in this cornfield infested town lol. It took us 35mins just to get to this place from my hotel. Anyways, we ordered the egg rolls, summer rolls, combination pho (flavorful and a good amount of meats), Hué style beef noodle soup (wasn't that great and it was oily), Vietnamese crepes (delicious), Thai tea, Vietnamese coffee, stir fried shrimp lemongrass chili (wasn't that great), steamed dumplings (didn't look and tasted fresh), and seafood pho (pretty delicious and packed with seafood and quail eggs). Overall, if I'm desperately craving for some pho while I'm on this work trip, then I'll come back. The food back home in Hawaii is what I'm used to. There's something slightly different tasting in each of these dishes. The staff are fast and friendly. The restaurant is huge and have like 20+ tables. The parking lot is pretty large too. read more

We have been here at least 20 times at this point and have NEVER had a bad meal. They have one of those very extensive menus with over 100 items. I've been lucky enough to try at least 15 different dishes and they are all wonderful. The owner is always there- a very friendly guy. My kids loved the robot "waiter" who brought food to the table. Looks are deceiving- from the outside, it looks very simple. The inside isn't fancy or lush, but the menu is worth the trip. read more

My husband gazed adoringly at me as we finished our first ever meal at California Pho. No, he wasn't gazing adoringly because I'm a raving beauty. (I'm an old gray-haired woman, in fact!) It was because I had once again put my Yelp savant skills to good use and found California Pho at the tail end of a long road trip. The restaurant is probably less than a mile off I-80, for all you interstate drivers. We weren't very hungry so we split some avocado spring rolls and a "rice with stir-fried vegetables" entree. It was all so fresh and tasty. The veggies were nice and firm and not overcooked. The greeter/waiter was lots of fun, and we had several laughs chatting with him. Two little ladies from the K nail salon recommended this place to my husband and while while they were doing our services. reluctantly I decided to be a god sport and give it a try. I am soooooo happy that I did because yo, This pho and Bahn mi was the absolute best I have ever had. The crab Rangoons were good... very small but tasty. The sandwich wasn't dry it had this amazing butter garlic sauce, chili sauce , crisp veggies and the grilled pork was soooooooo juicy and flavorful. The bread wasn't too hard it was toasted perfectly. For my Pho, I got the small bowl which should've been labeled a large size lol. The broth was tasty by itself it didn't need anything! It wasn't super salty it had a great beefy flavor without it being greasy. All the veggies were fresh! And the Thai basil was vibrant and green. Unlike a lot of places where it's brown and wilted from being old. Sad to say, wasn't a fan of the Thai tea. It didn't have the warm spices flavor for me. It tasted sort of like an orange colored strawberry milk. It wasn't watered down by the ice thank goodness. But it was alil too sweet for my liking. The upside the tapioca balls weren't overwhelming. We were in the area from our of town, looking for some Thai food for lunch. The service was amazing, our server made sure to ask the right questions to make sure we were happy with what we were getting and made recommendations. The food was also very good, everyone was happy with their food, even though it was a little different than what we're used to (a side of broccoli with our pad thai, for example) but no harm- the broccoli was good and good for us!! This isn't the best pho I've ever had, but for Davenport, Iowa, I'd say it's pretty decent. The broth in their pho is pretty flavorful and not out of a package. It's a pretty large space with a lot of seating and a parking lot out in front. I have been to California Pho twice now, and do not plan on returning again. Not so much because of the food, but more so the service. The first time I tried it was a few years ago. I had the Bo Tai Chanh which was okay. The beef was plentiful but the flavor was just plain. Not bad, but nothing extraordinary. If it was my first experience with Rare Beef Salad, I would not order it again elsewhere. My aunt got the Special Pho. Even though the tendon was too hard to chew, the broth and the rest of it was good. I ate some of it and it was definitely top-tier pho. Eating the delicious pho made me want to return and give it another shot. Despite the male server rushing us, and not checking up on us after he dropped off the food. Also, this Yelp app had a 15% off coupon which they would NOT accept. They almost seemed insulted for me trying to use it. Fast forward to yesterday. Restrooms were very clean. Excellent service this time around. Waitress was kind, attentive, and filled up our glasses. Food came out quickly. And that is when things got rough. My mother ordered the Red Snapper. It came out beautifully, presentation-wise. But it tasted gamey. She had to drench it with nouc mam, sriracha, and more fish sauce. It would have tasted better with a sauce smothered on top instead of on the side. I do not eat seafood so I ordered the Spicy Lemongrass Chicken, and even recited the number to the waitress. She brought me out shrimp. I never send food back into the kitchen because I am always concerned what might happen to it. But I do NOT eat shrimp and I would never order it. No problem. The waitress took it back and oddly, after a few minutes brought back the chicken version. It was not the best chicken, but it was flavorful and satisfying. Even though it popped up again on the Yelp app, I decided not to even try to use the coupon this time. I was never given the chance to review my ticket before I paid. I was just given a total and was expected to pay. They gave me the itemized receipt after I was charged which I did not check it until I got home. I checked the receipt and saw that they still charged me for the shrimp which I would never have ordered instead of the chicken ($2 less). That whole situation made me question whether it was a honest mistake or if they intentionally up-charged me for the shrimp since it was expensive. If you want delicious pho, I still do recommend them but I would stick with that only. Plus, the Thai Tea with Boba was good. read more

The Quad Cities is ramping up the quality and number of diverse and ethnic restaurants! Recently added to that growing list is California Pho in west Davenport. As a vegetarian, I was wary of Vietnamese cuisine since it oftentimes includes meat. A fellow veg friend told me to try out this place because of its vegetarian Pho, so my husband and I went here for lunch. We each had the veg Pho, which was served piping hot in a GINORMOUS bowl (seriously huge). Fresh veggies topped the soup, including broccoli that must have been quickly stir fried (?) and allowed to continue to cook in the broth. Genius. Who wants soggy broccoli?! We also ordered veg spring rolls (handmade) that came with a yummy peanut sauce. Bonus? Chopsticks and sauces already on the table! Oh- about that broth: light, delectable, simple. I've made veggie broth before, and it's a time-consuming process much like chicken or beef (but without the bones that tend to add lots of flavor). We're from Los Angeles where there are plenty of delicious Vietnamese restaurants to choose from. We were so pleased to find California Pho while visiting the Quad Cities area. Their Vietnamese food is equal (and maybe even better) than places we've had back home. This restaurant definitely earned the right to call itself "California Pho"! Our char grilled pork over Vermicelli (bun thit nuong) was very tasty and garnished perfectly with fresh herbs and veggies, and nuoc cham sauce. Our only concern was that the employees/servers weren't wearing masks. Since we can't wear masks while dinning out in times of Covid-19 it's probably a good idea if they do. This is my favorite restaurant in the QCA and my favorite Vietnamese restaurant period. As soon as you walk in, you get flooded with an aroma that's fragrant and fresh. I love how spaced out the tables are. It's like you're eating in community and on your own all at the same time. The man who runs it is really friendly, welcoming, and humble. It's amazing that they have such a large menu and everything is so fresh and distinct in flavor. Sometimes in restaurants I feel like I can order different things but they taste similar. At California Pho, each menu item is really unique, prepared with the ingredients, style and technique to make that particular dish shine (which is super fun if you like to try lots of different food and flavors). We don't eat pork or too much red meat, so that limits what we have ordered here but everything we've gotten so far has been great -- the chicken pho, appetizer egg crepe, sizzling shrimp (can't remember the exact name), vegetable curry,... Each one hits a different and delicious note. When we're in Davenport, this is my go to restaurant to go back to. The food and experience is consistently amazing. Californio Pho is slinging some seriously good product. This is definitely one of the better restaurants in the QC. Last weekend was my second visit and though I'm enamored with the pho, the delicious complexity of their chicken curry keeps me awake at night thinking about another return trip. Nothing better than a flavorful bowl of pho on a cold winter day . California Pho wrapped me in a large warm blanket and sent me on my way. They provide such generous portions. My friend upgraded to a large size because it was 1$ more and it was way more than enough. I love pairing my pho with egg rolls and these egg rolls did not disappoint. The menu stated 3.99$ for 2 pieces and I ended up getting 3 pieces each sliced in half which was also more than I expected to receive. Needless to say, come to California Pho hungry and ready to eat. Second time at California Pho on our way to and from Colorado. Superb food and service. We love finding great local places when traveling.

Pho was pretty good, as was our other food. Service was highly questionable. The server stopped by once for the order after we waited about ten minutes and all she said was "You ready?", Another time to deliver food, and once at the end of the meal, when we were done eating. Then they did the biggest pet peeve of mine, at the counter to pay the server stands there as she turns the screen around and you're supposed to add a tip with her just staring right at you. Umm, step up the service. Earn this tip. Might get takeout someday; definitely won't eat in again. read more
