The parking lot was packed, so I was hoping for a great meal. I was sadly disappointed. The meals came with a choice of creamy potato or chicken noodle soup. It was not very good. My husband and I both ordered the hot beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and fruit. The fruit was pretty good for this time of the year. The potatoes were luke warm at best. Everything was covered with a generic gravy. It wasn't beef gravy and I don't think it was turkey gravy. read more

Was not a fan of this place at all. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because the wait staff was nice and really tried to fix all of the kitchen issues. Food took forever (it wasn't busy), was cold, undercooked, and just all around gross. I hope it was just a bad night but we likely will not be back to give it another chance. It's hard to change such a bad taste in your mouth. Our waitress was very apologetic and even made comments of how surprised she was with how the food was coming out. The other thing I find very surprising is their beer selection... the best option we could choose from the selection was Heineken. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Heineken however you would think that they would have a German beer option or a craft beer to choose from. We were very disappointed. read more

Usually I'm impressed with this place but we've so far waited over 15 minutes and no waitress. I ended up going up front to the check out to get a glass of water. Everyone looked at me when I asked for water. This should of been a sign that they should go to our table and ask what we want. Our waitress was serving a large party that was finishing up on eating and the food was being boxed up. The waitress should of come over and said she would wait on us in a few minutes. At least acknowledge us that we were sitting in her section. Since our waitress didn't help us Tina became our waitress and was excellent. She jumped in when she saw us just sitting there even though she had her own tables on the other side of the room. I will remember her name the next time I come here. My friend and I both had the Chicken Stir fry that had a good taste but the cook got carried away with the salt. I had French onion soup and I asked the waitress to put cheese on it. Evidentially when they make the soup they don't do this. I have never seen when u go out to eat French onion soup without the mozarella cheese. Granite City in Mishawaka had the best French Onion Soup as far as I'm concerned. My friend had creamy chicken and rice soup it was horrible. He said he had one small piece of chicken Absolutely no taste and very thick like they put to much flour in it. I asked the waitress to take it away and bring my friend the French onion soup the way I had it prepared. Usually the food is very good and the service is the same but I was not impressed at all with this place. The management didn't seem to care about our concerns. I guess I'll have to look for another Restraunt to go to when I'm in the area again. Maybe I should of gone to Cracker Barrrel down the road from this place. If it wasn't for Tina in stead of the 3 stars I would of given 1 star. I knocked two stars off for the food, the wait and getting my own water. Although its name suggest some Irish heritage, Callahan's apparently is run by Greeks. And they are very patient. I arrived with a few dozen other hungover moped riders in the middle of a rally. Callahan's let us park on the sidewalks, mooch electricity for our phones and turn the restroom into a Turkish prison filled with beer farts and the stoops. Not me, of course. I was fresh, clean and only visited the restroom to wash my hands. The food was plentiful but not terribly savory, and the coffee was super acidic. It burned and turned my belly for hours. read more

I went for lunch and had a daily special, wet burrito. The waitress was friendly, prompt, and very attentive through my visit. The food was tasty, and there was plenty of it. The price was quite reasonable as well. It's not the ritz, but it's a great place to visit more frequently. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful. It was a bit past the noon rush hour so I don't know how it is at the busier times, but it was pleasant at the time I was there. read more

Food is good, but the service is terrible. I'm very allergic to onions, and always specify that none be on my food. On our first visit, my food arrived with onion on it, and I explained that the reason I had said no onion is due to the allergy, and I told the waitress I needed a new sandwich, because just removing the onion could still make me sick. She was gone about 30 seconds and brought it back, and assured me it was a new portion. Two bites later I was sick, and when my wife removed the bun, while I was in the bathroom, there was still a small piece of onion on it! Two years later (last summer) we went back in the middle of the afternoon. There were few customers, but it still took 15 minutes to get our drinks, and another 30 minutes to get our food. By then our drinks needed refilled, and the waitress said okay, but never came back with new drinks or to even check on us, until she brought the bill. I left a $1 tip, and she called me a cheapskate as we left. read more

I'm what you might call a regular at Callahan's.. I go every Thursday for the potato soup. 50 weeks out of 52 its great soup, but every once in while they don't get it quite right.. The rest of the menu is your traditional family restaurant fare from burgers and fries to meatloaf and pork chops.. the prices are great, service is almost always great, and always look forward to my Thursday lunches there. read more

Recommendation came from the lovely lady operating the toll booth - "local dive restaurant." Well, this is a delightful local diner with breakfast all day!! Service was prompt. The coffee was delicious (better than average diner coffee!), and the portions were enormous. I had two eggs, potatoes and bacon that came with a side of pancakes. Let me tell you, these pancakes were fluffy and amazing -- they had a taste of cinnamon in them that deserves 4 stars. My dining partner had the scramble, it came smothered in gravy and easily could have fed 4 people. My wife & I went for Thanksgiving lunch. We arrived at 1:20 with a 2:00 close. Obviously, this is a busy day. We were greeted & seated promptly. We reviewed the menu & much to our surprise they had a Turkey or ham dinner with all the trimmings for $10.99 -OR-FREE to Senior Citizen's 62 & over. We both ordered the free special & had an excellent meal. That was a game changer for us. We are now converts to Callahan's Restaurant. Well done. read more

My husband and I have not been to Callahan's for several years and were looking forward to lunch with friends . When we arrived at noon only 4 people where there which is strange since it was always packed. When we ordered our food we asked for soup and was told they didn't have any . My girl friend and I wanted beef stroganoff and waiter came back to tell us only one of us could order it because there wasn't anymore. So she ordered the ruben sandwich. My husband ordered the hamburger and cole slaw but they were out of cole slaw ! It took 30 plus minutes to receive our food and the stroganoff was greasy and ruben sandwich had no swiss cheese and the meat was tuff . Asked for catsup waiter never brought any for fries ! I do not know who is managing this restaurant but it's gone down hill. read more

They have a lot of good food. Restaurant is clean and staff friendly. They make their own soups which are delicious. The coffee has never been good here. I do not like their French fries or hash browns, both food that I am a big fan of so that is always disappointing. The bathrooms could be remodeled. I had lunch with a friend here, and thoroughly enjoyed the food. My guest had a Turkey Manhattan, and he was thoroughly impressed which is the reason for my high rating. The family atmosphere of the restaurant also added to the good first impression Callahan's left. I tried the BBQ Chicken Sandwich. I wouldn't describe it as anything amazing, but it did taste good. My friend and I also sampled the Banana Cream Pie; if I was only rating the Banana Creme Pie, Callahan's would get a 6 out of 5 stars! read more

I usually enjoy breakfast at Callahan's, but haven't been there in 2-3 years. Yesterday, (Sunday), we decided to go there for breakfast and got there around 10:00 am. The parking lot was full, but now we were there, so found the last parking spot and went in. We only had to wait for about 10 minutes for a table, as they were extremely busy, but only 2 of us. We both ordered the Farmer's Skillet, which took extra long to get, but hey, they were busy. I can't seem to find their menu online, but I would swear that were should have been more than potatoes, sausage, gravy, cheese and eggs in the skillet. I have to say that the potatoes were very dull, like they could have been old, (cooked and sitting around), and even though the menu called for sausage, the sausage in the skillet was sliced country fried steak, (and it was overcooked and dried out, like from last night or something). The pancakes were excellent, so ate what I could of that. But, iron stomach that I usually am, I began to feel nauseated and put half the skillet in a box and left most of the pancakes. Well, I swallowed some pepto bismol when I got home, and then had a couple of tums, until I started feeling better a few hours later. Today, (Monday), I just finished what I had in the box, and boy, is that a crumby breakfast. Very disappointing and though I'm okay, my stomach is a little bit unsettled. My wife, though no stomach problems, ate less than half of hers, and feels the same way about the quality of the meal. I will keep the tums handy today, just in case, but can they get by by calling country fried steak sausage? I know it's pork, but that doesn't make it sausage. Very disturbing. read more

We were staying in town for a Notre Dame game. This was a great diner, came in on a busy Saturday morning and service was quick and accurate, even with a couple of special requests. I had pancakes and scrambled eggs with fruit, husband had the corned beef omelet with toast and potatoes, another in our party had poached eggs, which she said were done to perfection. All generous helpings. I was skeptical when ordering the fruit, as when at a diner, you never really know what you might get. It was fresh and as good as I've had for off-season fruit (melon in November with pineapple and orange). Prices were very reasonable for quality and portions. Ruined our Father's Day. Went there for breakfast on Father's Day with a group of 3 adults and 2 kids under 10. We were told 25-30 minutes and we understood it was busy. After 45 minutes we were the next group to be sat and instead of sitting us they sat a party of 7 adults that had walked in 5 minutes prior and when we went to ask they didn't apologize and just said we don't know what happened. I live in the area, eat here often, like the food, love the waitresses and enjoy the ambiance. I run into a lot of my friends at this place ! Everything here is fine with me except the coffee. Callahan's must be hooked to City Water because the coffee, and that glass of iced water on the table, taste strange. I can imagine Callahan's using bottled water for coffee . . . . . . I think it's the ONLY way to a 5 star rating ! Still, I'd recommend this place on the service alone. read more

If you are in the area, and it is really late and you are hungry, this is the IT place to go, actually I think it is the ONLY place to go, as they are open 24hours a day and serve beer and wine late. This is your typical greek family restaurant and the food is not bad. Above average in my opinion, but did I mention it was open late? Yes everything else was closed, and yes everybody in there at 1 am was coming from a bar but breakfast or lunch or even dinner at that hour is a good thing and Callahans does the trick! read more

When I first got my driver's license 20 years ago, this was one of about two places that were open 24/7 in Elkhart. (The other was Perkins.) That alone meant we ended up there a lot. Callahan's is maybe a half-step below a Denny's or an IHOP in general decor, and their food ranks about the same. You don't come here at three in the morning because Zagat gave it a perfect 30 - you come here because you're half drunk or an insomniac and you want some bacon and eggs. Service is generally decent here. I don't know if they still do it, but they used to double parts of your order; if you ordered two eggs, you got four, etc. Decent breakfast fare abounds on the menu, and the sandwiches are okay. The dinner specialties are a little more dicey, so you might want to stick with pancakes for dinner. Like I said, this place isn't fine cuisine, but it's one of few places to hang out late at night in a city that rolls up the sidewalks at 9:00. If there was a Denny's across the street, this rating would probably slip a star and a half. But it's been around for forever, so there you go. read more

Love the food here. Everything in the menu is good and very reasonably priced. You get a lot of food for what you pay. It can be very busy at times tho so you have to watch what time you are going or service is rather slow. Every time I'm in Elkhart I look forward to visiting this place. read more
