    Chili Relleno plate

Stopped by Calle 21 for dinner after a nearby movie. The server greeted us warmly and we chose our own seat in the casual space. My sister and I both love chili rellenos so we asked if they could make a plate of them. They were happy to. When they came we were quite disappointed. We decided they were reheated from frozen. There were still areas inside where they were cold. They were also very uniform looking and greasy. The beans and rice were standard Mexican restaurant fare. I'll be skipping this place in the future.

The place is nice. They have a great outdoor area and it was nice to sit in the warm weather. The staff was so friendly and the food was really good.

Great spot for affordable Mexican food in NW Portland. In this economy, $30 for two filling dinners and a beer is pretty awesome. They have great combo deals with drinks and a cute patio. I got the taco plate with carnitas and asada and my boyfriend got the chicken burrito. Will be back! Super fast and friendly server too.

Service and food was great. The atmosphere is great, too (loved sitting outside on a warm day). The food is very reasonably priced. Highly recommend!

pozole verde de pollo - delicious and hearty

Delicious food, great service, pleasant atmosphere, reasonably priced! We ordered chicken tacos at $2.50 each on Taco Tuesday, 1 fish taco, pozole verde de pollo, and a quesadilla with chicken. For 3 people, the bill came to $34.95 with cash or $33.94 with credit card. We were visiting from out of state, so great there isn't a sales tax in OR!

Fish tacos, sides of rice & beans. Enchiladas on the far side. Best mango margarita I've had in ages!!

We always wanted to come here cause we pass it all the time and finally made an effort to come. Soooo glad we did!! I love Mexican food (so picky honestly) and very happy with the whole experience. We came for the burritos but ended up getting fish tacos & enchiladas. So delicious!!! Also got a mango margarita 12/10 and a pacifico on draft yum. The service was great and food came out so fast! The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating so we sat outside on this beautiful day. They play music and it's a nice vibe :) I highly recommend coming here (especially if you're picky w/ your Mexican food) We are coming back for burritos next (they also have breakfast!!) keep you updated!

I ordered the Taquitos De Potatoes with a side of rice. My spouse went with the fajitas, and my son went for the nachos. All three meals were good. Fresh ingredients, quick service, and the restaurant is in a great location. It's nice and clean with plenty seating. Prices were great as well. Definitely would recommend and return!

Stopped here for Happy Hour. Chips, salsa, guacamole and drinks are outstanding. Will definitely be coming back. Excited to have found this place.

Cute new mexican place. Good food. Great margs. $13 for two tacos and a marg? I'll be here all day! Wish the menu has more info but I asked the waiter and a) happy hour is only those two deals but it runs all day every day and b) all cocktails range from $8.50-$10.50 Will absolutely be back soon :)

The service was great. Food was served quickly and the patio area is great for the summer. I was surprised by their beer selection, as they serve Estrella which is a hard beer to find. Tacos were good although small, so I recommend getting some sides. Overall it was a pleasant experience.

Excellent authentic Mexican fare. The special - two tacos and a margarita - was the bomb! Great location in town.

Both the fish and the prawns were cooked in a red sauce that was delicious! I meant to ask for blue corn tortillas but was so excited to find shrimp & fish tacos that weren't deep-fried that I forgot to ask for them. The regular corn tortillas were excellent, though, so it was not a bad mistake to make. I also had jamaica to drink and let me tell you... it was not made from a mix! It was dark, thirst-quenching, and perfectly made. Most jamaica is super sweet - this was not! I love the flavor of real hibiscus and this did not disappoint. My friends had chile relleno bowls and birria tacos, all of which was excellent. Their watermelon margaritas were tasty and refreshing! Our orders were taken by a helpful person at the cash register and the food was served quickly by a friendly server. The inside and outside areas were clean and tidy, with plenty of seating available at the outside tables. The outdoor seating area is under cover making it a good choice for both summer & winter dining. Definitely going on my "have to go back and try something else" list!

Such a small detail that makes a big difference. The Citrus Salad was super fresh, crisp, and delicious, which balanced everything out perfectly. I also tried the NA classic margarita and it was so refreshing. I loved the subtle touch of orange juice. Overall, such a lovely spot with amazing food, great vibes, and thoughtful details. I will definitely be back!

For the amount of food and the overall experience, I thought it was a great way to experience the restaurant. Ángel took care of us and made the meal even more memorable by telling us the story and inspiration behind each dish as it came out. It made the tasting feel like much more than just trying a bunch of different dishes. I'm definitely a carnivore and usually feel like a meal needs some kind of meat, but surprisingly, my favorite dish was the mole with eggplant and rice. The mole was delicious, and I genuinely didn't miss having meat on the plate. I would happily order that dish again exactly as it was. The tomates en salsa arabe were another standout. I really enjoyed how fresh the dish tasted, especially with the seasonal tomatoes they were using. I also had the carnitas tacos, which had great flavor and texture. For dessert, we had what was essentially a fried concha, and I loved that it wasn't overly sweet. It had just the right amount of sweetness for me and was a great way to finish the meal. Overall, I highly recommend doing the full tasting menu at República. For around $40 per person, you get to experience the entire menu, and if you're lucky enough to have Ángel there to walk you through the stories and concepts behind the dishes, it makes the experience that much better.

Today my wife and I enjoyed scrumptious Tacotes, one chicken and one Bok Choy with house made salsa. Extra side of yummy and creamy black bean frijoles with sour cream, butter, tortillas. Instead of desert, the Mezcal, chile and lime was refreshing. Right now open for lunch Thursday through Sunday 10-3pm. No fixed menu, changes with what's fresh - the way chef Angel loves to cook respecting what is in season. Service and ambiance is friendly and knowledgeable about the food and its origin - another reason I love dining here so I learn about what I'm eating and how it was inspired. Yes, the food plated looks so good, I am inspired to dig in. There's a reason it was recognized early in its start by Eater, Portland Monthly and the Oregonian as one of the best restaurants in the city because foodies seek out and love to go where the food experience is special - especially the chef tasting menus in the past.
