Calle Mexico started off as a food truck (which still exists in the warmer seasons) but they've now opened up a restaurant. Their specialization is authentic Mexican food. As soon as I stepped in, I knew it was going to be authentic. I could smell the food being cooked from the kitchen. The worker (I assume owner?) communicated with a few customers in their own language, which is always a good sign. The restaurant is catered more towards take out, which explains the small size of it. There are a few small tables and seats lining the walls for eating there though. The menu offers different types of tacos, tortas, and 3 other main dishes: "the famous Calle Mexico" tostadas, enchiladas, and sopes. There's also a daily special soup and student combo special, soon to be available. For drinks, the classic Jarritos is offered, which I find is a necessity in all Mexican restaurants! It just pairs so perfectly with tacos. I ordered the Al Pastor (pork) tacos. The orders of tacos all come with 3, aside from the dorados (crispy tacos) which come with 4. The slow cooked pork was accompanied by diced pineapple, cilantro, and onions. Dried chillies were added to it to give it a bit of seasoning. The tacos were flavourful and tasted fresh. Salsa and guacamole bottles were on the side, which I ate with my tacos. The only thing I'd have to mention is that the pork was on the drier side. It didn't take away from my enjoyment of the tacos though. My friend ordered the Tinga (chicken) tacos. The shredded chicken breast was marinated in a chipotle sauce. It came with a variety of veggies: shredded lettuce, tomato pieces, and radish, then topped with sour cream. He really enjoyed his tacos and said that he'd come back. We also shared a Sope between us, which is a traditional Mexican dish. It's a thick tortilla topped with different fillings. At Calle, the toppings are tinga chicken (the same as from the tacos), feta cheese, slices of radishes, an avocado piece, and sour cream. The tortilla was handmade and still very warm when it came out to us. It was soft and had a slight crisp to it, which held up the toppings well. The sope was a nice mix of different textures that I got with each bite. This is a good place to stop by if you're in the mood for some traditional Mexican fare. The service is quick and friendly, and the food is freshly made to order. I'll be back to try out some other Mexican dishes for sure. read more

Calle Mexico has lots of promise, but isn't quite there yet. Let's start with the issues: *The Al Pastor (Roast Pork) taco was very dry. *I'm a cheapskate and I don't like ordering drinks. I asked to see if I could get tap water, rather than bottled water and the person serving me led me to the Aguas Frescas. Because I have a weakness for Aguas Frescas, I naturally ordered one. But I only needed tap water. *There isn't a single vegetarian option on the menu. By lacking a single vegetarian option, Calle Mexico loses out on my family's takeout business. And Let's end on a good note: *The Barbacoa (shredded beef) delivered on all accounts - it was moist and hit all five tastes - sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami. *You can just order one taco if you wish (well, certain varieties). *You can mix and match different fillings. *Salsas are homemade Some have complained about the prices, but when you adjust for the exchange rate, the prices are comparable to the best taquerias in California. Favourite Mexican food in Edmonton, hands down. Went for the first time two weeks ago, returned three days later, am already dreaming of the next visit. The staff remembered us on our second trip and were amazingly friendly both times. There were three of us each visit and we split everything, so I had the pleasure of tasting half the menu. Firstly, I am so excited that this little slice of taco heaven is within walking distance. I had been trying to get to the food truck, but when you work out of town, that is hard to do. I was happy to find out that they have an actual restaurant as well. Juan and Angelica are the smiling faces behind the great food. Juan is a red seal chef that has been featured a few times now on local television cooking segments. He loves what he does and it shows! At Calle, you will find authentic Mexican food. They have a set menu at the restaurant and at the food truck. There is a daily special and it doesn't really matter what it is, you should try it! They have a featured dessert as well, which I haven't had the room to try yet. Hot sauces are made in house. I am a big fan of the tomatillo version; just the right amount of mild heat. Everything that I have been able to try so far has been really, really good. They aren't licensed, but they have horchata which is almost as good. The restaurant is tiny, so don't expect to bring 20 of your friends in for a meal. Get Calle to come to you and cater! To quote a fellow Yelper that I might or might not be married to... SHUT. THE. FRONT. DOOR! This place is the real deal if you're looking for authentic Mexican food! By far, they are the best that I've had in Edmonton and surrounding area. If there is some place that is better, I have not found it in ten years. It is run by a family who came here from Acapulco, and if you've ever had the cuisine from their food truck, then you know what Calle Mexico is all about. We started off with a Mexican stew called Pozole, which just happened to be the special that day. The flavours were perfectly balanced in a broth that had never crossed my palate before, with thin avocados slices gracing the surface. Their tostadas were phenomenal, as were the barbacoa (beef) tacos. I love the touch of having their sauces tucked away in a tiny, little Coca-Cola cooler, located on the counter. Granted, the place is very small with maybe only a half dozen tables so the dining atmosphere might not be the most luxurious, but for me that's part of it's charm. It is decorated in the traditional Mexican colours and art pieces and takes me back to the small mom and pop shops that we visited in Bucerias, a small suburb of Puerto Vallarta. Someday I might be brave enough to try the Lengua (Google it) but rest assured, I sure cannot wait to step through the doors of Calle Mexico again. read more

I've been here a few times and really have nothing bad to say about the food, and in fact it's really good with great sauces. I usually order tacos however the other items have looked really good as well. HOWEVER, the prices here are insane. It's very very very pricey unfortunately. For perspective, chips and salsa that usually come free at most Mexican restaurants are $6 here. Again it's super unfortunate because I really like the food but there is no reasonable way to explain these prices. As far as take out, I have had problems with soggy food in the past but this is expected with Mexican food usually so no big deal. Overall the food is great and I recommend if you're okay with spending about $20 on a meal here, otherwise I'd recommend finding somewhere else that's more cost effective. read more

Decided to come here based on reviews since a friend and I were craving tacos. It was well worth trying. From the exceptionally good food, to the friendly staff, the whole experience was top notch. Great big flavour from a tiny hole in the wall. That pretty much sums it up. On our first visit, we tried the fish taco, the beef taco Barbacoa and the mixed grill taco whose name I cannot recall. All were very, very good. The cod was crispy, the beef tender but the star was the combination of sausage and pork. So I heartily recommend this tiny, family-run place. I really really like it here - used to only get take out, but since they've expanded, we often stay in. The service is always really friendly and the food fresh. The tostada and the alambre tacos (bacon in tacos for the win!!) are delicious, but we've probably eaten through their whole menu and liked everything. Even their hot sauce is tasty - spicy but with flavour; this isn't Frank's red hot, my friends. My favourite thing though, is the tres leches cake. It is so damn good. Always leave room for it. We ordered beef barbacao tacos, green enchiladas and the famous tostadas The speed was amazing- we ordered and had the food in front of us in less than ten minutes. Everything was awesome and fresh. The taste was authentic.They had two salsas available and both were fresh and authentic tasting. The tacos at $13 were a little expensive but the tostadas at $11 were generous. Great food! I love this Mexican Restaurant! It's family owned and you feel the vibe as soon as you walk in. The staff members are very kind and down to earth. We ordered a variety of things to share. The chips, salsa, and guacamole were a delicious start and very reasonably priced. All of the tacos were very good, but the veggie quesadillas with rice were my favourite! Decided to go to WEM, usually I get the standard dq chicken spicy wrap and New York fries (in the big food court) as I was walking towards both food shops and I came across CALLE MEXICO an authentic Mexican food shop I've never seen before. As a Mexican myself I had to try the place! This very nice cashier named IVAN helped my wife and I and made us feel very comfortable while ordering (best customer service of that entire food court in my opinion). We ordered 4 beef tacos and 1 horchata and to be honest with you it was amazing. Made me feel at home instantly. This is hands down the best and most authentic Mexican food I've had in years. There food has quality ingredients, awesome taste, generous size and so so good. One of the things I loved the most is that the food doesn't take an hour to make like most Spanish restaurants I've been to. I ordered two orders of pork tacos, tostadas and one of there tortas ( I believe there called) which only took about 7-8 minutes to make. They have the best tasting salsas to put on your food and the owners are so lovely and kind. They were sure to ask and make sure we were happy with the food. Of course we were. I am always on the hunt for AUTHENTIC mexican food, not this Tex Mex style hipster bait that places like Tres Carnales try to pass off as authentic. I speak a little Spanglish so I love when I walk into a place and hear people speaking Spanish. I'm by no means "fluent" but it makes me happy when I get to use my hard earned Spanglish, learned on the streets of Quintana Roo. Calle Mexico is a tiny little hole in the wall, there is not much room, but they make up for their small stature with BIG flavours. I'm a sucker for a good Torta El Pastor, and Calle Mexico's is the best I have had in Edmonton. I have had it a few times. They have a home made habanero salsa that has the perfect heat and flavor for those who like it hot. I also had the pleasure to try their Pozole which they make on Thursdays. It's not the Pozole that I am used to, but it's AMAZING. I had never had Pozole with chicken before, but it was just as good if not better than the pork version as you don't get that occasional fatty bit. Also don't forget to leave room for dessert, their desserts are fantastic as well. I have had the chocoflan and the tres leches cake, both of which were great. The only thing better than the food are the owners. I had the pleasure to meet them and they are great people. They came out and asked how we liked the food, and genuinely wanted to know our thoughts. The are warm people, quick with a smile, and you can tell they take pride in their business. This place is really really good! I had the LENGUA (beef tongue) tacos and they are SO moist! AND SO DELICIOUS. We also ordered another one that had beef, bacon, and some other bits.. I can't remember the name (Alambre?), but it was also bursting with flavour! I've been to Huma, Tres Carnales, El Cortez, and 3 Amigos, and I have to admit that in terms of taco taste, this place makes it the best. I don't know how can I describe my experience, the food is awesome, very tasty, is one of the most authentic and delicious Mexican restaurants, this is one of the best in all Canada, I tried before in Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and I never felt in Mexico. Why?, The owners are so nice The food is amazing, if you been before in Mexico, in a real Mexico, in the little towns, you understand me, the restaurant has this flavor, like you grand mom cooked for you, Homemade. The Best Mexican food in Edmonton! This is one of my favourite places to eat in the city, and by far THE BEST Mexican food I have had outside of Mexico (actually even better than some I had in Mexico). Everything is always so fresh! I have been there many times and never once have I been disappointed. My all time favourite are the Tostadas! However, I have loved everything I have tried so far. I really love the Pozole (and often get lots extra to take home). It is awesome to see new things added to the menu all the time, especially the very fresh and delicious Churros! Also, the staff here is amazing! You can tell they put everything they can into making this restaurant amazing! The owners are two of the nicest, and most authentic people I have had the pleasure of meeting. Their passion for this business truly shows! I could literally eat here every week, likely more often even, if I was closer. Seriously the BEST! read more
