A nice quality bakery. My family have been patrons forever. I have gotten birthday cakes, office doughnuts, cookies and even my wedding cake from Calumet and have very rarely been disappointed. Moist satisfying baked goods at a reasonable price. I have only had 2 items that i did not care for: kolacky and paczki. I have had them multiple times, and are they gross? No. But they aren't good either. The kolacky is pale and dry. And one of my biggest pet peeves as a Polish girl are bakeries that cut their paczki to fill them, it's lazy and no longer a paczki. Now it's some weird jelly sandwich. It's a bakery, I'm sure there's an extra pastry bag and tip floating around to do it the right way. None for me thanks. The service and cakes have went down. They have made mistakes on several orders. I sent in photos and spoke on the phone to the manager about the color. They did the opposite because they didn't want to make it too ivory so they made them white. to make it worse the manger Aimee has the nastiest attitude. She acted as if correcting their mistake is a favor. Then she started telling me I'm stretching it with a color. When I asked about the time it will take she told me they're not going to stop doing what they're doing to correct it. I never asked for that just a time and she was rude about that. When I told her she was being rude her response was basically all well. I don't know if they're overworking the staff or have new people but it's horrible. The cakes are delicious and fresh. The people are very professional, wait times are low. They add highly organized.

Let's start with the positives: the cake and tiered cupcakes was very attractive in appearance. The cake was also delivered on time to my parents 40th anniversary party. Thank you Calumet Bakery! Now the not so positives: went in for a cake tasting and met with a young lady who spoke at length about the design of the cake in conjunction with how much we wanted to spend. Our cake tasting was to last an hour. We spent 45 minutes on design. During this time we did not have any cake. We sampled cake in the last ten minutes, which made us hurry the tasting part. I will admit we were 10 minutes late to the tasting, so maybe this is what went wrong but I felt like we should have been tasting cake while discussing the cake. If we had done this simultaneously it would have put us more at ease. The assistants in the bakery really seem to like their work but they are often confused. Beware if you need to make multiple payments to really keep up with your receipts and original contract. It's as if they hired a lot of enthusiastic teenagers and young adults but really did not train them to do their job well. If you call in to make a payment in regards to your order they have an antiquated system of looking in a book by date. It is not computerized therefore when you call to make a payment plan to be on the phone for at least 15 minutes. I called in several times to make a payment and they told me I owed more than I did because the original young lady who processed our order indicated we made a $50 deposit when indeed we made an $100 deposit. The ugly: if it's not in writing it's not real. They told us that to rent the cake stand would be $75 dollars and upon return of the cake stand we would receive $70 back. This did not happen...apparently $60 was written on the receipt but $70 was agreed upon. The cake and 1 tier of cake and 100 cupcakes cost about $300. It was pretty to look at but it was not very tasty. To say I was disappointed is the understatement of the year. After the party my parents tried to be nice by taking the top tier home to share and told us how lovely the cake was. Later, my mom admitted to throwing it away and asking me why we just didn't get a cake from SAMs Club or Jewel. (Because according to her it would have been better) Honestly, I think they have great "front door service." I would definitely walk in and purchase a baked good...but as with the other yelpers here, something is definitely going awry in the cake department. It appears that finding a bakery that sells fruit tarts is rather difficult in NW Indiana. So, when I called Calumet Bakery to see if they sold the illusive fruit tart, (they don't) the person that answered the phone sounded so positive that I'd find an alternative I had to give it a shot. And, after experiencing their Cherry Pie (and sneaking a donut) I'm happy to report the employee was right. Now I've had my share of pies, but I can't remember one better. My mom went nuts with decorating the house for Christmas this year so I thought I'd stick with the winter theme so that's what I told the bakery over the phone and they ran with the idea. Just LOOK AT IT. I ordered white cake with a fresh strawberry filling and it was delicious! I went there on one of the busiest days ever. My cake was made correctly but several other customers were highly upset about their cakes. It took total about 40 minutes to get in and out for a pick up. This time I had them add the strawberry mouse instead of the traditional fruit filling and it was delicious. 1/2 sheet cake was $60 with minimal decorations. Store is always clean and they have SEVERAL other options from the counters suck as donuts, tres leches cake, turnovers etc. It's always a treat to visit them. If I could give a negative rating I would. TERRIBLE customer service. I placed a cake order 2 weeks in advance. I show up the day and time of scheduled pick up and wait for 2 hours and then they tell me that made a mistake and somehow forgot to make the cake. They refused to deliver it. I was desperately searching for a bakery on the Sout Side of Chicago for my baby's 1-Year Birthday Party. Since the party was taking place on a Sunday afternoon, it was important to find a place that was open on Sunday so I wouldn't have to pick up on Saturday and try to prevent damaging it in my fridge for a day and a half. Calumet Bakery's website was pretty boring (I always judge a company by their website) but I was desperate and based on the 4 Yelp reviews, figured I should at least visit the store. The Chicago location was closed for vacation the week I went, so I made the short drive to the Torrence Ave location. OMG!!! Can you say the display case in the bakery was to die for!!!! Calumet Bakery was quite a disappointment. I ordered a cake for a gender reveal and it ended up falling apart by the time I arrived to the party, which was only 20 minutes after I picked the cake up. I was showed the cake before I left and transported it safely. By the looks of the cake, it seems it was overfilled and the entire top cracked open and slid to the sides. I called the manager and he proceeded to blame me for it, accusing me of dropping it. Why?? Even stating that what I was saying was impossible; how unprofessional for a manager to accuse a customer.
