Went there for a cake tasting a year ago and we were treated as if we were a bother. The wedding was canceled and we were going to re order the cake, but they would not answer the phone calls or emails for days. They didn't bother making the birthday cake that I ordered! They had 2 days to get it done. When I went to pick it up they didn't have it made because they had questions and weren't able to make one of the designs. Instead of calling me they just decided not to make all of it. I ordered a cake in advance and asked the very helpful young lady if I could pay in full before pick up on 9/9 at 10am she said it would be fine because I'm giving notice. I went to pay on Wednesday and it was busy as per the usual, so I came back on Friday morning to pay for an easy pick up Saturday. The young lady states that there was no deposit paid so it wouldn't be ready until after 3pm on Saturday as they make all cakes the day of which as a person who knows baking making a cake the day of is not feasible when it has a fruit filling and buttercream icing. It takes awhile for the cake to cook and cool, plus you have a multitude of cakes to make the same day it's not smart. Anyway I speak with the manager a thin young white male with an attitude stated the policy and I stated my frustration as when ordering you ask for a phone number and an email address for contact, no one made a courtesy call that I needed to pay either the deposit or the full price on Wednesday (which I did come but their process is so chaotic for ordering and just making cake payments is ridiculous). The manager was rude and smart mouthed by stating we are too busy for that like the people who come and pay for pastries and cakes aren't. Any other business has someone who makes courtesy calls to make sure the patron still wants to keep their order or remind them of the payment and even if they don't call an email or text is sent out. Their process is a headache and the management needs training on professionalism as I cancelled because of his attitude, a tasty cake made by u professional staff isn't the way to continue to make money. Another patron stated he was rude and they screwed her up for her cake order that day!!!! The owner needs to get the manager in order for real and adopt a better process for cake orders along with the system upon walk-in as tickets are not good enough. Someone needs to be at both registers one for cake orders/payments only and the other for pastries, the orders should be taken by a ordering specialist and that order should be given to the cashier when ready to pay it makes ordering much smoother with less congestion at the counter. More focus goes on the customers and less people standing around, also it will cut standing time as COVID is making its rounds. read more

I visited Calumet Bakery this morning in order to pick up some cannoli. Although I have, on occasion, had the opportunity to enjoy various pasties from Calumet Bakery, until today, I'd never set foot on the physical property. Here are my findings: 1. Calumet Bakery provides the perfect atmosphere for aging men to meet and kibitz about their days spent in the steel mill, the Ford plant, delivering parcels, or maybe even serving and protecting the streets of a local jurisdiction. 2. People watching. I patronized Calumet Bakery for under 10 minutes, total, and in the time I saw a myriad of odd looking characters, coming and going. I will defiantly return and dine in so I can do some legitimate people perusing. 3. The Price is right. You can ask for a little more when you put up the quality level Calumet Bakery does. 4. The "Up Sell." The physical appearance of the pasties in this place is, "next level." The employees are running, nonstop and don't have the time to walk through the menu. They probably would, but there is no need. I walked up and down the display cases, three or four times, like a prison guard inspecting cells, at roll call. Everything looks fantastic. There is room for some improvement here. In my opinion, it would be beneficial for Calumet Bakery to label the pastries so a "pastry ignorant" customer could place his/her order without having to ask the following questions: "What are these?" "What are those?" "How do you pronounce the name of that again?" "How much for one?" "What are these filled with?" "Will these make me look fat?" 5. The taste. It's as good as it gets. There is really not a lot of room for improvement here. Some of the best pasty around. So even though I went for Cannoli, I bought a fistful of Roshky. Nut Roshky and Raspberry Roshky. THE SCORE SHOULD BE ZERO BUT YELP WONT LET ME DO THAT. We had a wedding cake ordered from them over 1 1/2 years ago. Paid it off over a month early. Day of the wedding NO CAKE!!!!!! The venue tried to call them no answer. After the entire bridal party arrived and were informed of the issue several bridesmaids started calling. When they finally got a hold of someone they told us it wasn't paid off. We sent the clearing of the check and then they told us they would t guarantee us the cake. The bridesmaid insisted on talking to the manager. We were told he'd call back in an hour. In the meantime the venue got us a cake. Then they delivered the original cake NOT THE OWNER just a delivery guy so it's not his fault but this is very unacceptable. Then when the bridesmaid went in for the bride they only refunded $100 This is crappy service. There were around 150 people at this event and believe me they all know the craziness that we dealt with. It is a shame the business took the money but that's where any customer service ended. My sister made arrangements and paid $500 in full to have a cake made and delivered for my sisters 50th birthday. The cake was the centerpiece of the dessert table and something we all were very much looking forward to presenting to my sister not only because it was a monumental milestone but also as a gift to her. We were looking forward to taking pictures with the cake. My sister could have gone anywhere but chose to use this establishment. She was told that the bakery had to deliver the cake to the venue per their policy. We could not pick up the cake. The party's location and date and time were confirmed by phone several days before the event. We we're told the bakers would arrive between 5-6. The party started a 7. They never showed or answered the phone!!!! My sister was devastated!! Needless to say it didn't ruin the party but definitely put a damper on it. Awful!! Every birthday I always ordered a red velvet cake from calumet bakery. My husband this year had order one for my 30th birthday and it was a complete disappointment and expensive. Not only was the decor the cake not what we asked for (handdrawn not screen imaged), but it was poorly done. The cake itself had more frosting than cake by a large margin. On top of it when we called to try to nail down details for the cake both people we talk to you were very rude to my husband. I have been supporting this bakery first with the one in South Deering my whole life 49 years then in Lansing since I moved to Lansing in 2006. The service sucks now. Maybe because of covid but twice I have tried to give them business in 2021 and they are rude over priced and turn around time for a cake is ridiculous. In 2018 I bought a cake and cup cakes for 150 people and got exactly what I asked for after they were constantly telling me what they could not do for me and finally after talking to the baker he said of course I can do what your asking for. We hired Calumet Bakery to make our wedding cake with cupcakes a few weeks ago. The cake was beautiful and delicious, though the cake met with catastrophe when we tried to cut it. I caught the cake and everyone has a great laugh. We were willing to laugh it off and hold it as one of those crazy wedding memories we'd have for the rest of our lives; until we returned the cake stand. Calumet Bakery claimed that we did not return the top tier of the cake stand and refused to give us our deposit back. In the email from the bakery explaining the missing piece, the person stated that the cake would have been unstable without the top piece-perhaps we have solved the mystery why the cake fell!! We simply wanted our deposit back, not a refund for the ruined cake and they treated us as though we were trying to steal the top of their cake stand. I'm extremely frustrated with the customer service at Calumet Bakery and myself and my family will never return. read more

There are definitely some great things about this bakery, but I don't consider it a 4 star bakery by any means. It also loses a star for their ridiculously tiny parking lot. The good: FANTASTIC coffee cakes. Maybe the best I've ever had. Hit or miss: Donuts. Most are great, but occasionally the cake donuts aren't fried right and they've soaked up so much oil that they're sponge-like and wet. The "cheese taco" donut thing is also sometimes overdone, which is a shame, because it's SO GOOD when done right. The bad: Their cake frosting is awful. Like, *awful*. The worst grocery store bakery in our area (which I guess is Meijer) even has better cake/cupcake frosting. What's maddening is that they have a ton of torte-shaped cakes you can try by the slice. And they look so good! Red velvet, strawberry, black forest, you name it. But the frosting, even on the red velvet (which should have cream cheese frosting!) just tastes waxy, like a bad Little Debbie coating, because it's clearly entirely made with Crisco. Really disappointing. And considering how long they've been in business, I doubt they'll change any time soon. So yeah, long story short: phenomenal coffee cakes, usually very good donuts, and gross cake frosting. Maybe some of those cake slices have a whipped cream frosting, I'll have to ask... read more

I ordered a cake for my Niece's baby shower. I ordered a two tier cake with with a baby on top wearing a tutu and a crown. The cake was somewhat sloppy, the decorations weren't neat. I could see swirl marks. The baby was so small in proportion to the cake. The blanket was also small. To top it off the baby was frowning. I paid $215 for the cake. I discussed my concerns when I picked up the cake and no one seemed to understand my issues with the cake. To add insult to injury, I was told the cake wasn't moist. This was my first experience at the Bakery. My husband and I came in, and you have to take a ticket. We had 157!! As soon as you walk in, the scent of sweet bread hits your nose, and then you see all the pretty colors of the wonderful choices of unlimited sweets!!! Our helper was Caitlyn, hope I spelled her name right. She was exceptionally nice and patient. I'm sure she knew it was our first time. We got the lemon and blueberry danishes. My husband loved them, but I thought the lemon danish could have had a stronger lemon taste. We had the red velvet cake donut, the bow tie, the glaze donut, apple fritter, chocolate long john and a slice of red velvet. I LOVED the chocolate long john!! The icing was on point, and delicious!! The cake donuts were moist. The red velvet cake was a little dry and the cream cheese icing was not cream cheesy, if that makes since. They had fresh bread that they slice for you. My husband will definitely be back for that. I will also be back for their yeast donuts for sure! My work friends had a baby shower for me in November and got the cake from here. It was extra cute and extra delicious. Ever since then I have been wanting to try more of their treats. You know just to be sure that the cake was not a fluke. So, one day after school I sped down Torrence and quickly picked out a few things. I got two different cake slices, butter cookies and a coffee cake. The cake slices were huge - enough for two people and tasted just as good as I remembered. The butter cookies were also excellent. The coffee cake was still great the next day for breakfast and probably enough for about 10 people! The inside of the store was immaculate and had a very cute seating area. This place is pure heaven...Everything you can desire in a bakery: excellent selection, great prices, friendly service, and delicious food! There are 3 locations, the one on Torrence being the newest and largest. And it is quite nice in there...Upon entering you see an absolutely huge case filled with cakes, cookies, cannolis, danishes, etc, etc, etc. Their cheesecake is the best I have had--even better than Eli's! The cannoli are top-notch as well. I went here a few weekends ago to meet with a wedding consultant about making my wedding cake. Such a pleasure! The woman we spoke with was awesome. She brought out several samples of cakes and fillings and icings based on what we said we would possibly want. The choices are endless! Any flavor you can possibly imagine they can do...They have tons of books with pictures of cakes for design ideas, a few of which were large binders of cakes they have done there. Definitely not amatuers, beautiful work....We mapped out size and styles based on number of guests, shapes of cakes, etc, and walked out very pleased with what we found out. We've decided to have them make our cake: chocolate with white chocolate mousse filling and buttercream icing. I can't wait! And I can't stress the great prices enough--a cheese danish was only 80 cents, and worth every penny and more! Oh, and try the cakes...They have one that is filled with strawberry and banana, whipped cream, two different flavors of cake, and covered in chocolate and chocolate-covered strawberries. Calumet Bakery did a wonderful job on my wedding cake. I went to the Lansing location with my now-husband, my sister, and my mom to do a cake tasting about 2 months before my wedding. Our consultant was very friendly and knowledgeable; she was the one who would actually do our cake. She brought us several samples, and they were all absolutely delicious - the chocolate with mocha filling was what we eventually decided upon, though everything else was wonderful too (especially the red velvet!). I brought in a picture to show what I generally wanted for my cake, and it turns out they had a picture in one of their catalogues of what I wanted (a 3-tiered, round cake with cherry blossom branches). Our consultant gave us various options based on how many guests we thought we would have. Once we were finished, all we had to do was pay a deposit on the way out and bring in a swatch of the color for the outside of the cake. The cake turned out so much more beautiful than I even imagined! It was delivered to my reception site before I even got there, so there was no stress in wondering where my cake was. It tasted amazing, and my guests really enjoyed it. I would highly recommend Calumet Bakery for any couple looking for a bakery to do their wedding cake. read more

I received the worst service I have ever received in my life from this place. I made an appointment for a wedding cake consult to take my mother in because we were planning her and my father's 50th wedding anniversary. I made the appointment several days before. On the day of our appointment they called me to verify the time and I confirmed our appointment. Our appointment was for 3pm and my mother and I showed up at 2:45, 15 minutes before the appointment. when we walked in I told the young lady at the counter that we had a wedding consult for 3pm. We saw the wedding consultant and she was currently with another client. At 3:05 she was still working with the same person who was there when we came in. I went back up to the counter and asked was she the only consultant and was told yes. At 3:10 she finally finished and the other clients left. The consultant then gets up cleans off the area and then goes to the counter and starts serving customers. I'm thinking to myself "are you serious"! I then went back to the counter and explained to the girl that I had an appointment for 3pm and have not received any services yet. By now it's 3:15 and I've been in the shop for 30 minutes. Now I spoke to two people when I came in let them know that I had a 3pm appointment, but when the consultant finally came to speak to me it was 3:20pm and she said no one told her I was there. My mother had to asked for an apology because one wasn't give. she then acted like she didn't want to service us. We were not showed any pictures of cake, nothing was explained to us. she just pulled out a sheet of paper and started drawing circles. I have been a wedding consultant for over 20 years and I have never had an experience like this when I've went with my customers for wedding cake consults. I'm advising everyone to run and run fast if they pass this business. read more
