I've lived near this place for over a decade and FINALLY made it over there. Truly a chaotic experience, but that's part of the fun. Small, cramped dining room with classic diner vibes. Cameo Cafe is an icon in East Portland and SueGee is a legend. I grew up in Portland, but I don't come here often. However, every time I do, SueGee is there. She is greeting new arrivals and stopping by tables to visit and chat with patrons. The food here is good ol' breakfast offerings. My favorite thing is the buckwheat pancakes. I've had buckwheat pancakes at other dining establishments, but I've yet to find one that beats Cameo Cafe's. If you are feeling extra indulgent, you can add chocolate chips. :) Their strong bread and homemade raspberry jam is a delicious combo that is simple, yet just perfection. If you aren't feeling like a typical American fare, you can select from the Asian options. Korean pancake, Kimchi omelet, among other options. I don't know how else to describe the ambience other than eclectic. The chairs are a mismatch of less modern styles, but it somehow works and just perfectly Cameo Cafe. If I could give them a zero, I would... first of all, the restaurant, although cute in all its chintzy decor, is filthy. The table cloths under the glass table coverings are dirty with dried sauces and debris from past meals. They obviously are not washed often, and the restaurant's cluttered, making it hard to clean the floor or seats regularly. I usually have the biscuits & gravy, called the "Marsha special", but they changed the recipe, and now it's watered down, and the biscuits are old & hard. For it being a fairly small restaurant, the wait staff is always flustered and overwhelmed, which leaves them being extremely rude to customers. And don't plan on getting water or coffee refills, it's not gonna happen. To make matters worse, I didn't expect to have to check my change after paying, since they are a restaurant who deals with money transactions all day. But, when I got home, I found that the waitress shorted me $10. I still tipped well, even though we received bad service, so I feel completely ripped off. I was traveling with my boys and we stumbled upon this gem. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant! The food was amazing with large portions. The decor was welcoming, cheerful and adorable. The best part was the staff and the service. The staff were so attentive and welcoming. I felt like we were old friends. i've been wanting to try this place for a while and i finally had the chance to! it is next to a busy street, so parking was a bit hard to find but not the worst. the building is very small but the inside is adorable. i love the casual eclectic atmosphere. it was very homey and cozy. i noticed that the hot sauce they served was made by them(?) which is super awesome. i love how they fuse korean foods with american breakfast. i am very intrigued by their other fusion dishes i got the bindae tok which i ended up regretting because it was not filling at all. i finished my whole meal and still felt starved. i think it needs some more protein or something? but i really liked the crispy edges. although my meal fell flat, i still feel charmed by the restaurant and would be willing to give it another try. read more

Food brought hot and fresh to the table. We'd ordered several dishes to try, so there was hardly enough room for it on the small table we had, but we figured it out! Everything was delicious and unique. I'm not sure of what the names of the meals were, but we liked everything. For someone who needs low carb options, there were several items I could have. Was here January 15. This is the biggest pancake I've ever had in my life and it's not even the biggest size they gave. The apples that it came with were awesome. I also got sausage and fried eggs and also hash browns (forgot to take a picture). The hash browns could use more seasoning even after I added a nice amount of salt and pepper. Sue herself was there helping people feel welcomed, checking up on customers, and helping her staff all at the same time! Her staff also as well emulated that-- their warm genuineness really permeated the room. On top of that, there was live music that made it come together. Perfect for a family or morning brunch with your date to settle into the day. I ordered the NY steak with eggs and toast. Extremely generous with the portions and tasted great. Get the house toast! It's a must. Plus with the egg yolk with Sue Gee's spicy sauce is *chef's kiss*. Went here on father's day with my dad. We weren't sure where to check in but we were eventually seated after standing around for 10 minutes. We were set up with water but were promptly forgotten about. We waited for 25 minutes for someone to come take our orders after watching multiple other tables get seated and have their orders taken while we were waiting. My father got up and asked one of the waitresses to come take our order and was told to "hang on honey". After another minute of waiting, she came over with more water and told me to pour it myself. She went over to another table who had just been seated and took their order and then left the room. We left right after that, because we were extremely hungry and had been waiting for almost 45 minutes. I hope this is not a common occurrence, but I will not be back after the lack of attention to care for us as customers. read more

What can I say other than...utterly fantastic. We were told that we have to come to the Cameo Cafe because it is a Portland landmark serving Korean American fusion. While I think the Korean American fusion part is a bit overstated (they have Korean food and they have American food, but not many "fused" ideas), my experience here was extraordinary, so much so we came two mornings in a row...even though we had other breakfast obligations. I tried the Hot Link Omelette with hash brown and the Bin-Dae-Dduk. The Hot Link Omelette was good, but I wish the hot links had a little more hot bite to them, but other than within the sausage was spicier, it was delicious. However, I ordered the Bin-Dae-Dduk both times. It was exquisite...and don't tell my mom, but it was better than hers when she makes it. It was perfectly crispy, thin, and flavored! The other wonderful part of the visits was the service. We were cared for wonderfully each time and that alone makes me want to get back there as soon as possible. read more

What a wonderful breakfast spot! Thisbe place looks like a time capsule from the 80s and I'm here for it. The coffee was hot and fresh. Our server kept it coming the entire meal. Not too strong but still solid. They have half and half on the table. The portion size is large! You could also easily split a meal. They have the standard breakfast food items as well as a few unique Korean additions. I had the kimchi omelette on both my visits. The house sauce on the table provides a great kick on the potatoes. We bought a bottle of it to take home. We also bought the seasoning salt. The jam is also homemade and quite good. It has a little spiced flavor that we couldn't get enough of. The price is fair for what you get but it isn't cheap. Highly recommended for sure! read more

I've driven by the Cameo countless times, but it's always been a bit too far from my home to have made the trip there at meal time. Fortunately my wife paid a visit with friends and decided that she needed to return with me in tow. The menu is mostly breakfast classics, with numerous Korean options adding interest. We tried the Bulgogi Salad, and the Bugogi beef with veggies. Each had the expected Bulgogi flavors, and thankfully came with hot sauce on the side, letting us decide how much heat to add to the mix. Service was amazingly attentive - with staff that appears to be dedicated to ice water and coffee refills, and we got to watch another person visiting all the tables with a basket of packaged jams and jellies, making sure everything was fully stocked. The decorations took me back to the 1980s - fancy wallpaper, plum colored accents, and delightful chandeliers with additional tchochkes gilding the lilly. I am so glad that we found this café. It is such a unique little spot. The service was quick and attentive, the food came out so quickly. They definitely have it down on the grill. The decor is random funky pieces obviously gather throughout the years and family photos and news paper clippings. There's a lot of character here. One of the workers was going around, greeting tables and thanking them for being there, wishing everyone a happy new year. Really makes you want to come back because you can tell there's a lot of love that has been put into this business. Not to mention that the food itself was great diner food, and I would love to come back and try some of the Korean specials. It isn't was it used to be. I was a regular here 10 years ago when it was always packed and the food tasted fresh. Now, the food is disgusting. The pancake was chewy, the eggs tasted like old grease, and the bacon was flavorless. We were going to get hash browns, but we were in view of the grill where they sat soggily in a lump. Everything surface was sticky and the decor was covered in grease and dust. It's in desperate need of a deep clean and a new chef. read more

I've seen a few TikTok's on this place so I decided to give it a try. The decor here reminds me Alice in Wonderland, it's kind of whimsical and weird. The server was great she was fast and friendly. I had a pancake which it was ok 7out of 10. I tried that homemade berry syrup there and I didn't care for it too much 2.5 out of 10. I also got the country fried steak meal and it was overloaded with gravy. The gravy was not very good in my opinion, it was made with water and didn't have a country gravy flavor. The chicken fried steak was weird, I can't really explain exactly what was wrong about it but it it was the flavor and then it didn't seem to have been battered like traditional chicken fried steak. I give the chicken fried steak 2 out of 10. The has browns were good though. The price here was the most expensive breakfast I have ever had. Great food. Was in Portland for a Timbers game and I looked up pancakes because my son wanted pancakes for breakfast. While Cameo didn't rate the highest I noticed the Korean food on the menu and it made me think of a breakfast spot in my town that has a similar menu (Brails in Eugene) and I generally don't love traditional American breakfast. Both of our meals were awesome, their pancake is massive (my son could only finish about 1/3 of it). I had the Bindaettok with a side of kimchi, I would 100% eat that again. The super nice lady that owns the place even came over and introduced her grandson to my son. It's busy and noisy but they turn out great food and their vibes are super rad. Fun spot to go for a meal. I would call this a "DIVEY DINER" with good food. Located on a triangle shaped piece of land surrounded by busy streets (it's a miracle cars don't drive through and into this place with all of the drunk drivers out there). Parking is in the street in the local neighborhood. Came for breakfast and struggled to decide what to order. Huge pancakes are real popular here but I make a good pancake myself. Decided on the eggs Benedict as this is something I don't make and is a dish I like to try to determine how good a restaurant is. A huge plate quickly arrived with tons of hash browns. Hallandaise sauce was on point, poached eggs done right, and I was happy with it. Enjoyed the hash browns more than I thought I would and ate EVERYTHING! Cameo used to be the place I took friends visiting from out of town. On my most recent visit, one of the owners placed a 'reserved' sign on our table while we were still eating and encouraged us to finish quickly. After we paid, we were asked to leave so the table could be turned over. The restaurant does not take reservations and it was not clear why our table was suddenly reserved and no one else's were. It left me feeling like an unwelcome guest rather than a valued customer, and I won't be returning. read more

Well...it's been 12 years since I first visited Cameo Cafe. Hubby saw my review and suggested we check them out since it was near the airport. The one drawback is they do not have a private parking lot so street parking can be a challenge. We arrived around Monday morning around 11 and waited about 10-15 minutes. The outside dining area was not open. Our table ordered Pork Chop and Eggs, Korean Style breakfast, Senior Breakfast and Bulgogi Salad. Hubby said his Pork Chops were seasoned well and not overcooked for thin pork chops. The pork chops are served with 2 eggs, hash browns and toast. The Korean style breakfast is served with your choice of protein, bacon, ham or sausage, 2 eggs, rice and a side of kimchee. The slices of bacon were nice and thick, but I'm not sure that it really went well with the rice. I'm thinking a different protein might have been better. Over all it was okay. My friend ordered the senior breakfast thinking it would be a lighter portion. But...as you can see from the pancake it was anything but senior. The pancake covered the entire plate. Location near airport is a definite plus just be sure to allow some extra time in case you have to wait to be seated. read more

You know how you always want to try a restaurant but it's never the right time (other plans, ect.)? Well I have wanted to eat at Cameo Cafe for over 20 years. And either I should have done it 20 years ago, or just kept on thinking about it because today was not a good day there (unless it is always like that). Good-got quickly seated, water was super cold, nice combination of other diners, felt like we were all there to experience something great. Not so good-everything else. The menu is actually pretty good in terms of selections, but there are "specials" posted everywhere in the restaurant. Under the glass on the table, on a white board, on a paper on the wall, it made me feel like I might miss out on the best meal ever....i ordered breakfast (we went around noon) and it was $17 for eggs, meat, hash browns, and toast. I had wanted a pancake, but no substitute allowed and I didn't feel like paying $9 for the smallest order of pancakes (I really wanted diner hashbrowns as weel). When my order came it was with 4 huge pieces of bacon that were overcooked and super chewy, almost burnt. The eggs tasted good, but the hash browns had an odd taste to them, I don't know if it was the grill needed cleaned or the oil they use? I tried to salt and pepper and ketchup my through them, but alas, the weird taste won. I ate the eggs, a couple of the less cooked bacon ends, and maybe 1/4 of the hash browns. My dining companion ordered the bulgogi salad. Seemed like an interesting combo. But, the salad looked like it came out of the bag, the rice was gummy (too much water?), and the bulgogi was so overcooked and burnt that it was charred on the outside and cold on the inside. Even the little dressing on the side was not flavorful and she thought it was just some vinaigrette. The salad was also $17. While the cafe itself was cute and have a great vibe, and the staff were friendly, the food was a no go for us and I will not return. Now I'm nervous to try the one in Vancouver.... I almost forgot to mention that someone working behind the counter was talking to other staff members in an "Asian" accent. Ambiance is a cute cafe on the corner of a busy street. There is outdoor seating in the patio area. Inside is like a diner but someone dining room too. The inside has lots of pink which is cute too. . Imagine this place like IHOP but with a korean flare. . Kimchi cheese omlette bulgogi beef - this is what I ordered. The presentation wasn't as pretty. But it was so cheesy good and flavorful. The chunks of kimchi and beef bulgogi give this omlette a different view of point with a fusion twist. . Overall we had a great start of the morning with some Korean fusion breakfast. Loved the hot coffee to start the day. As well got to meet the owner which she was friendly, funny, and stylish.
