Overrated. Your average modern Italian restaurant. There's a lot of loyal local customers. I found it to be blah. The chicken Parm cutlet is a chicken breast cut in half bread it as if it was fried chicken, the breading was so hard the crust and thick it overpowered the thinly pounded out Chicken meat. I walked in an hour before closing and they said the kitchen was closed early tonight. No sign on the door or indication of an event, and there were still people drinking and having a good time in the bar, but I couldn't get dinner. I drove in the snow to get to it too. Ordered a shaved steak sandwich and a pizza to be delivered to my house. I'll start with the positive. The food was delivered at the time promised and the delivery person could not have been nicer. Unfortunately, that's where the positive part of this review ends. The pizza crust was undercooked and doughy. Sad because their pizzas are usually very good. The shaved steak sandwich was even worse. The ingredients were basically thrown on two pieces of stale Italian bread and sent out. I'll include a photo and let you judge for yourself. If I worked there, I would be embarrassed to serve this. Especially for $14.00 and a $2.00 delivery fee. Okay... let me state this a clearly as possible, I'm happy with zero complaints. We had a triple date night tonight that included my Wife and I along with my Son his Girlfriend and her Patents. Everyone was happy. Not one negative thing to say. The food quality, portions, service and ambiance were all on point. A very solid Family Italian restaurant. We all had separate dishes and we all had left overs. Perfect...dinner + lunch all in one plate. My only complaint is that I'm not a local...but the next time I am in town I'd definitely come back. I took my team to dinner here. The staff was super helpful and patient with all of us. They watched out for our drinks and got our food to us promptly, hot and tasty. Food was a bit better but I never went to an Italian Restarant that up charges for various sauces - Had gnocchi and there was $5.00 sauce up charges Had a side salad and another $2.5 romaine lettuce up charge - when I asked if the lettuce was bagged it was not for my benefit it was for the restaurants bc I always send that poisoned bleached lettuce back so when I was offered an alternative I didn't think I'd be charged. I would have happily declined the salad rather than end up paying 8.50 So walking on I'm ok with a $16.00 gnocchi but I'm in for $30.00. The waiter should have said there was an up charge... I only had enuff money plus my gas money to get home so I wasn't able to tip. Bill should have been at most $23.00 and a $4.00 tip. Both the customer as well as bartender ended up loosing out. Next time I'll carefully scan the menu for extra charges and make sure I'm not ordering something.im happy to be without. This is a review of the take out from Canales, I know take out isn't always as good as dining in, we sat down to eat within 5 minutes of getting it so it was fresh. Chicken parm - chicken was tough and soggy breading without much flavor, sauce was supposed to be meat sauce but seemed like more chunks of tomatoes. Chicken riggies - no spice options available but did come slightly spiced as expected and was good but nothing special. Still trying to figure out why we couldn't get regular spaghetti instead of spaghettini but anyways, overall an OK experience the food was not bad or gross but definitely not worth the higher prices. Visiting from Texas to salmon fish and our guide recommended this place. Such a great dinner after being on the river fishing we couldn't have asked for a better ending to our day. We had the pepperoni provolone and Hungarian peppers for appetizer and so will try to duplicate at home. My husband had the black and blue paste and said it's the best ever. I had the rigatoni and traditional sauce with meatballs. So good! I couldn't finish it was so much food. The pumpkin cheese cake... well it seemed to disappear while I went to the rest room! It is an incredibly bland mixture of clumps of tomato and chunks of onion, with no evidence of cream or cheese whatsoever. There's nothing here to meld or reduce. A go-to favorite that never disappoints. The minestrone soup is very good- I sometimes will stop for takeout just for the soup. The chicken Marcella is a personal favorite (but I really miss the twice baked potato). You really can't go wrong here- the pizza is great as well! Also the baked haddock- yum! Food is amazing here. I had the Morolo Combo which is A combination of chicken parmigiana, Italian sausage and a meatball with a side of rigatoni fixed Romano style; served with a salad. So delicious, meat sauce is to die for. Definitely will be back to try the other dishes. Only down side to this place is when you first come in it has a smell of dirty carpet. Stopped in this weekend during Oswego's parent weekend and was impressed with the tasty food and great service. The restaurant was well staffed for a busy Saturday afternoon and all interactions were professional and pleasant. My hungry college student was so excited for "real" food, and Canale's did not disappoint! The bruschetta was a great way to start our meal. Chicken parm was crispy and the meatballs were delicious. I have always loved this restaurant, but I ordered a side salad, a pasta and 2 slices of carrot cake for delivery and I have been waiting for 2 and a half hours. They are not picking up their phone to at least let me know that it is going to be longer, and no updates on the status of my delivery. This is by far the worst experience I have had with ordering takeout and customer service, unacceptable. Thank god it is just me starving and not kids or a whole family. I've been coming to Oswego to fish the Oswego River for browns and steelhead and Lake Ontario for browns and salmon for many years. And, every time I come we eat in Syracuse or Liverpool before driving north. Food selection in Oswego has always been a challenge. After all these years guide Andy Bliss of Chasin Tail Adventures finally told me to try Canale's. He said it was real Italian and good. He was right. Canale's isn't going to wow you, but it's a definite winner in this town. It's a 3.5. A notch better than average. And, more than affordable. There's a tremendous amount of value here, good service and that rare old-school Italian restaurant style feel. You won't be disappointed following a visit here. In fact, it will likely be your go-to destination in town, as it will be ours. Finally, something edible in town! I ordered the chicken parm with spaghetti. The sauce was awesome. Very tasty and sweet and the chicken was cooked perfectly, very thin and tender. I didn't need to use a fork. Well done! I enjoyed every bite. My cousin ordered the sausage sandwich and was impressed. Wonderful tasting sausage with great bread. The pizza was good, but not amazing. Average pizza. Canales is the restaurant to go to when your family comes into town to visit you at school or if you are going on a nice date. There are few "nice" restaurants in Oswego and this is one of them. There is plenty of room for large parties and the menu is big. I have had a variety of dishes here and they were all delicious. Even the house salad before the meal is good. The waitstaff is hit or miss, some of the female staff members are rude, but what are you going to do. Lunches here tend to be on the slower side and the place can really fill up for dinner.
