My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this cozy little gem on a cold Saturday afternoon. The owner did an excellent job with decor and styling the inside. Very very cute. The place was nearly packed full but we were able to find two seats at the bar. The employees were above and beyond friendly and despite being crazy busy service was great. I opted for the fruity pebble latte and my girlfriend had the maple/molasses latte. I actually preferred hers so we switched but both were excellent. I loved Canary Coffee Bar! To start off, this space is absolutely beautiful. It has high ceilings so people's voices don't travel as they're conversing; it'd be a perfect spot to study/work. I ordered a rose and cardamom latte, which was delicious. It tasted like a latte version of Arabic coffee (which I'm a huge fan of). I've been here before and the coffees were good, but I think the more important thing to note is how abrasive and rude the owner can be. After reading through reviews I see it wasn't just me and it happens often, which is unfortunate. I walked in mid day to order a pour-over flight, this is a $16 item on the menu... not some fancy drink with instructions. It's an item they advertise. I was taken back when the barista (the owner) questioned my item selection and made it clear he wasn't going to do it because he had busy morning. While I don't doubt he had a busy morning, there was hardly anyone in the shop at the time + no one in line. For a shop that prides themselves on their bean selection, refusing to do a pour over as an owner of a coffee shop... is certainly a choice. Do yourself a favor a visit another coffee shop around the corner where you won't inconvenience the owner. The pastries look amazing, the pie that I had was...good. The real highlight was the too-cool-for-school barista who barely acknowledged us and had a natural talent for being condescending and dismissive. Maybe we caught her on a bad morning but we likely won't be back to test that theory. The Yelp averages work in their favor and I do hope that continues. On my first visit there, I was able to get street parking around 4:00pm. There is a list of seasonal coffee drinks and I went with the lavender latte with oat milk. So delicious. This is such a confusing coffee shop and I've heard the same from a bunch of others. Nobody knows where to order exactly. No signage or anything around and I always have to hunt down the seasonal/specialty drink menu which is always dirty. The staff never say hello when you walk in or they straight up ignore your existence. Going early in the morning is also weird because they've kept the doors locked even though they're open and you have to get their attention to come in. It just feels like an episode of the twilight zone at this place. It's the closest location to me but I go out of my way to go to other coffee shops that have a better atmosphere and much much cheaper. read more

There are so many coffee places in Milwaukee, and each of them has their own allure. I have mostly tried to be non-committal when friends from out of town ask "which coffee shop is best?"; but after a few visits to Canary Coffee Bar, I'm no longer a non-combatant in the coffee wars! Above the first tier of coffee shops, you find a few boutique places that focus very specifically on the coffee, itself. They obsess over the entire process of being a bean from the trees of distant lands to the final cup on the table in front of you. They are intimately familiar with each variety they sell, and it would seem almost hokey, except if you taste through a flight of their coffees you walk away a true believer. If you consider yourself a coffee snob (or enthusiast), you will not find a more satisfying coffee experience than drinking a flight of Canary Coffee brews, especially if you let the owner talk you through what it is that you're actually tasting. Besides the uncompromising excellence of the product itself, the staff are friendly and know their business. The atmosphere is intimate but great for sitting down and getting some focused work done. It's also nice that metered parking seems always to have a few spots available really close. You'll pay for a cup of black coffee what you're used to paying for a pint of craft beer, but I don't think you'll regret that. If you're entertaining guests and you want to show off your city's coffee scene, this is the place to take them. read more

Went to canary around 8:15 on a Thursday and was behind 2-3 other customer and it took about 30 minutes to get a coffee. The barista was great and doing their best but she was the only one servicing the whole building including make long food, serving coffee, and ringing up customers. In the 30 minutes I was there about 8-10 walked out of the line and left. I was already committed to waiting or I would have walked out as well. The coffee was great but had no way of servicing customers in a timely manner with one person. Also there was a lady that was taking out the trash and when she was the line of people she laid the trash bag on the floor and sat at the bar and didn't move for 20-30 minutes. Looked like she worked there but also possibly struggling from something because she left the trash laying on the floor and was talking to herself and laughing randomly. Not a big issue but definitely not sanitary or profession. Coffee tasted great though! read more
