This restaurant was INCREDIBLE. The staff were all so nice, and the food was amazing. I tried the souvlaki chicken ($13), and it was spectacular. It came with 2 massive skewers of grilled chicken that was extremely well-flavored, french fries, a greek salad, rice, and pita bread with tzatziki. It came with 2 sayces, green and yellow, as well as a nice creamy salad dressing. I left really full with lots of leftovers. My family members also loved what they got. This rainy afternoon my mother and I were out shopping and decided to look for a place to eat close to White Oak. I did a quick YELP search and came across Canastas Chicken. I've been missing delicious Peruvian style chicken. My mom had never had it before. We got a whole chicken with two large sides for $16.50. We got green (cilantro) rice & fried plantains as our sides. We got it to go. After a long & rainy day we got home, put on our pj's and sincerely enjoyed one of the best chicken meals of our lives. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and juicy. Even the skin was delicious. The rice and plantains were a perfect balance. We made our own garden salad to go along with the meal. The staff were patient as we decided on our meal. They were so friendly. We will definitely return. Please stop by and eat this food! read more

Tried Canastas on a recommendation and was not disappointed at all. I had the 1/2 half chicken dark meat and it was Great! You can choose between dark or white meat and 1/2 or 1/4 chicken. Whole lotta other selections to choose from. They also serve the chicken with a sauce on the side that is on point with the chicken. The only thing I think they are lacking is some traditional drinks from down south but that is a personal preference. read more

I am a long time customer of Canastas Chicken since day one! Today was NOT a good experience and I'm hesitant to return based on the poor customer service experience today. I purchased a Family meal based on the signage the price was $23. Upon check out I realized the price was $26. When I inquired I was told "Oh yes. Our prices changed." I continued to inquire because I did not understand how I or any other customer for that matter would know about a change in pricing. Had I been educated by means of a sign or heads up prior to ordering the outcome may have been different. I inquired further. The food service attendee stated "The price is the price. There is nothing I can do about it. " While I understand that we are all feeling the price and pressure from inflation, it is POOR business to misrepresent your pricing and also very illegal as it would be classified as false advertising. I enjoy supporting local business/restaurants. However todays experience left much to be desired. read more

I was so excited to try this place, it is close to my house and I LOVE Peruvian chicken. So I was disappointed when I got my food here. Now to their defense it was maybe a hour and a half before closing when I went to pick something up. The chicken wasn't seasoned well, the fried rice was old and should have been thrown out. I also got green beans, they were the best part of the meal and they were 1 degree from being cold. I am all for the local and small businesses and I want to support but I'm probably never going to go here again. Maybe they are still getting the kinks out because I don't believe they have been opened long. I will take the drive to other places to get my Peruvian chicken fix. read more

This is truly a hole in the wall restaurant. The food is to die for, and they give you large portions. I had the 1/4 white meat chicken with a side of pinto beans and mixed veggies. I was stuffed, and it was the best rotisserie chicken I have EVER had, hands down! All the staff wear masks, and masks are required when ordering and if you're not at a table. This review is for the location in Short Pump. The first time I went I got a chicken burrito. It was really good and filling. The second time I took my 9 year old son. He ordered a chicken burrito with fries and I ordered a steak burrito with plantains. When I got home we found we both had steak burritos with fries. At any rate, their steak is sub par. I am not sure how it's prepared but it would be much better grilled. Chicken Fiesta grills their steaks so I was maybe expecting Canastas to be similar. Sadly it tasted pan fried and not very good. We were staying near the airport and after seeing the great reviews of Canastas we thought we'd give it a try. For appetizers we tried the stuffed potato and the anticucho de corazon- both very tasty. For the main course we went with the pork chops and the carne asada- again, both were great (although a little challenging to eat using only plastic cutlery). I've been in town for a business trip for 4 nights... I've been back here every night to explore the menu. I've lived and worked in Latin America for the last 30 years and this place rates as potentially one of the best Latin food joints I've eaten in... Anywhere. My only suggestion for this place is that they need to change the name. Chicken sells this place short. I'd recommend renaming it 'Perfectly Peruvian' - because they do it all well here. Their fish is fresh, awesome whether fried in the Jalea (chicharrones de pescado) or raw (ceviche). Carnes? You've got all of them perfectly cooked to medium rare. The chicken is good also, but pretty much the least-flavorful of the stuff I had. The plantains were awesome. Chicha morada made on site. The most surprising element of the menu... Those little sauces they serve with everything. One was a sort of mustard cilantro mayo the other a take on a chimichurri mayo. Some of the bites I took were just excuses to deliver those sauces to my mouth. Awesome place, fast and friendly service. Excellent value for money. read more

This is one of the best kept secret's in all of Richmond! Richmond is known for its various cuisine's but this restaurant needs to be recognized in a hurry! The staff is always friendly, and willing to assist. Their Peruvian chicken is by far the best I have ever tasted, and their lamb chops are to die for! I decided to finally try their chicken sandwich, which turned out to be very similar to a chicken cheesesteak hoagie, and being from South Jersey right outside of Philadelphia (and if you know me I never eat a cheesesteak while I am in Virginia) I must admit it was quite delectable! So if you are ever near the airport in Richmond on Laburnum Avenue, stop by Canastas chicken, it is well worth it! read more

Canastas chicken is my new favorite spot! I order the 1/4 white meat chicken with 2 sides (green rice and fried plantains) for 7.50 no drink. The chicken was so tasty and juicy even though it was white meat, the green rice was out of this world super delicious, and the fried plantains were fresh and yummy!
